[Q] Shipping with 2.3???? - EVO 4G General

I just took a look at Sprint's website and they now have EVO's shipping with 2.3, does this mean that we will be able to use the kernel that was used for those models to help out with developing roms with 2.3? Sorry if this was in the wrong place or if this information was known and not helpful.

provide a link & yes this is the wrong section.
http://shop.sprint.com/mysprint/sho...0138&flow=AAL&planSKUId=&ptn=&tabId=dt_phones
it does say...
"Operating system
Ships with Android 2.3"

So theres an official 2.3 version of android for the Evo,just not for those of us who have already purchased our Evo's? How does that work?

Agreed, I would love to know.....
This sounds odd. Maybe they updated the page too early? and this means GB Update soon?

Moved to General. I could have moved this to Q&A, but I think it is of enough interest to have it as a General topic.

I thought I was going nuts but right in their page it says ships with 2.3 smh... I hope it means something good for us

Says by the end of June...According to CNET > It's an old post from April, but it seems to be accurate after seeing the "Ships with 2.3" on the Device page...

That wouldn't make sense to have the update by the end of June if I can order a white one from Sprint.com today and have it to my house with 2.3 in two days...

Dang... you got hosed, I think I'd be taking that one back and making them give me an updated one. The gal I just talked to from Sprint had no clue that the page were all looking at had been updated so.... She did get in touch with tech support for me, but they werent aware of any ota either. She suggested contacting HTC.

i have been in contact with HTC about the Gingerbread update and a new version of Sense.... here is what i have gotten so far from the HTC rep......
here was his first reply "I understand that you need to know when the update to the EVO 4G will be available. At this time, a release date has not been announced yet for any of our updates to 2.3. We also don't have any information as to whether the EVO 4G will receive an updated version of Sense, either. For the latest news, please keep an eye on www.htc.com/us and www.twitter.com/htc."
then he sent this "I apologize, I realized that in my previous email my wording didn't confirm that the Evo will be receiving an update to Android 2.3. This follow up is just to confirm that it is a when, not an if; it has been confirmed that the device will be receiving an update."
then i pushed him a little harder for more info and he replied with this "Thank you for your response. As stated in my first email, we don't at this point in time have a release timeframe for Android 2.3 for the EVO (or any of our devices). We want to get the updates out as soon as possible, but will not do so until we have thoroughly tested them and they are approved as ready by both ourselves and Sprint. In regards to an update to the Sense UI, this is completely independent of the ROM version. There's been no word on if the EVO will receive an updated version of Sense or even if Sprint has shown an interest in having it put on the phone. Thus for the latest news, please keep an eye on www.htc.com/us and www.twitter.com/htc."
then he sent this (kind of randomly i dont know why, and ENDED the conversation) "Thank you again for your reply. I'm concerned that only the notification that you have a response is getting to you but not the message itself. In your last two emails you have inquired as to when the Evo will be updated to 2.3 and if it is going to receive an update to the Sense UI. However, I did supply the only available response to that inquiry (thus my concern that the messages are not making it to your inbox for whatever reason). We don't at this point in time have a release timeframe for Android 2.3 for the EVO (or any of our devices). We want to get the updates out as soon as possible, but will not do so until we have thoroughly tested them and they are approved as ready by both ourselves and Sprint. what do you guys think???

It would be refreshing to have a new version on Sense on our EVOs.

yes, it would. for being a flagship device, it is the only one still stuck on Sense 1.0
sense 2.? would be SUCH AN IMPROVEMENT AND MUCH NEEDED!!!!!!

Funny . . you visit the HTC site and look at tech specs for Evo and it says Android Gingerbread for OS. . .
EDIT: Sorry, looked at Sensation specs thinking it was Evo . .

Yeah that was the first place I checked after seeing it shipping with 2.3 on Sprint's website. You'd think they would communicate, at least a little

wow this is weird. Sprint has updated info to soon b4, but to have both sprint and htc update info to soon is to much of a coincidence. So i'm thinking the ota should be hitting in the next couple of days
EDIT: ok looked all over the HTC site and see nothing saying android 2.3/gingerbread. So where are u guys seeing 2.3 on htc.com?
I did however see that at htc.com it says the EVO has OS 2.1 and at shopamerica.htc.com it says 2.2

Yeah... I saw that. Little skeptical though because once you trace the source back to handhelditems they say someone got that info from a webchat with Sprint. We all know to think twice about those! lol It does seem to line up with that April 9th update that's been floating around though. Who knows...
Hopefully this is true and not another april fools prank. It was about a week-week and a half ago they rumored it would release in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed.................
With all the sprint leaks we have been getting I think it might be getting close.
But who knows
I already have it thanks damage

don't worry, Sprint will just repackage one of the XDA roms as their own and use it as the official update
ive said it once ill say it again the april 9th update is a maintenance release to fix mms issues not 2.1
sprint hasnt told us anything beyond that
any new news on an "official" release date? im hearing either the 9th or 26th of this month? i don't get why sprint is soo tight lipped about this?
also when is the nexus & evo launching on sprint?

with alot of tweaking to do after the initial install, yes your right.
i hope when the final comes out and we get custom roms, we won't have to apply any fixes. this is one reason im back to 1.5 for now. i have faith in the devs here, they do great work!
Why do we keep creating threads on this issue. It is a waste of space. It will come when Sprint is ready to release it. They have never given an exact date. People get so pissed because they haven't sent an update. Well guess what. When you bought your phone it had 1.5. They are not required to update it to 2.1. Either use a custom ROM or shut up and wait until it comes out. Then when it comes on don't get on here complaining about how crappy the release is.
I have Fresh 2.0d and it is working very well.
----------------------------
Shut up and wait
Running: Fresh2.0d
Developing:WarpedMetal (T minus 2 weeks)
Just got out of a sprint chat. this is what they're saying
honestly no thread can "waste space" as well we have plenty of it. I wasn't complaining nor *****ing about it. I am more happy with the legend based roms then the leaked Sprint roms but when the official Rom hits it will help with more development to fix issues and get faster roms out there. honestly if you don't like these threads the easy thing to do is stay out of them. no one is forcing anyone to read the forum or a certain posts. forums are for talking that is there main and only reason for existing.
damn I hate trolls.

Does Sprint use any automated responses on the chat support? I know there's quite a few companies that do, the program just selects a basic response to generic questions about that subject, and it seems like the responses that are given by these reports are way too "computery" to be coming from a human. So I'm guessing that the system Sprint's chat support uses has a list of responses pop up based on key words in the client's question.
Probably way off base, but it'd almost make sense based on how similar the responses are in all these chat transcripts.

As ususal, Engadget gets it wrong. They can't even read a press release, and never bothered to pick up the phone and call Samsung. This announcement was datelined from London and about the UK, which is clear from its context.
See also this thread in Vibrant forum.
p.s. As recently as a few minutes ago, Samsung's Galaxy S support site for the U.S. on Twitter was saying there is not ETA for Froyo on this side of the pond at all.
Deployment for the Epic is even more complicated than the rollout for the GSM-based variants in the U.S. If the Epic gets Froyo in November, I will be most pleasantly surprised.
one way or another it seems like typical samsung taking forever to release an update
I just got word from my sprint connect to not expect froyo until mid-late december... he said it may be well into january before sprint pushes it out. let's hope he's wrong!

Typical sprint. Its like a perfect storm of two companies that look at support only as an expense, not as retaining future customers.

I'm inclined to believe this since Rogers in Canada is saying their version of the Captivate will get Froyo in 2011. If Froyo was ready in 2010, everywhere else in the world, why would Rogers tell their customers to expect it in 2011?

What? You want to wait until 2012 to get a new OS update?
What does 2.2 offer that you can't have on 2.1? I just don't see what the big deal is anyways. Is everyone that unsatisfied with their phone that they are getting bent out of shape about 2.2? This is Sprint and Samsung we are talking about right? I fully expect it to be here in January or February. In the mean time, I will enjoy my Epic with 2.1 Which is still better than the Evo on 2.2, imho.

I heard flash sucked with 2.2 but that's just me. Granted it's nice to have and it's something the I-suck doesn't have so that's always a plus.
Phone is plenty fast for me but I don't do anything extensive on it. Even when it drops I'll probably still wait a while to see if it's even worth it. Reading the Evo forums, it sounded like it was more trouble than it was worth and broke more things than fixed.

Why not just ship it with stock Android (and more than 3 screens) and then allow us to customize our devices as we see fit?

Yeah I went to the Sprint store when I went and bought my case for my Epic and messed around with an Evo..be it a display, and they had a screen protector on it, the screened looked REALLY grainy, and it was very very slow. I'm guessing it hadn't been restarted in awhile and had every app open on it running in the background. I checked it and sure enough it was running on 2.2.

Sammy says Froyo for Vibrant in November, right?

Will it happen?
Really........i don't care much anymore I'm already running 2.2 actually I wish it was already out so I could stop hearing about it but then it will just become about 2.3

apparently we're getting the real deal today, nov 30th, and if not, tomarrow via kies. T-Mobile: Samsung Galaxy S getting FroYo
Froyo has already been around for the Vibrant, what is needed is the 2.2 kernel source so the devs can optimize that and work out the small bugs like the 3.5mm jack for phone calls in Froyo...

DUDE use the ****ing search or google or something and wise your ass up, these threads are getting stupid as hell opening every single day. IF you want froyo then FLASH IT, why do you think the stock one will be that good? it will have lag from the RFS system, no root, chances are the ones that are out now are just as good as sammys or better, and will only improve when the real one comes out.
t-Mobile UK already delayed the Release of Froyo to it's customers. No reason given, but It was supposed to be released via Kies yesterday and no one go it. So a few sources are saying it is/will be delayed yet again.
Samsung told me the other day on Twitter that, "it's coming soon" that same BS, and they actually told me they were "abandoning" the Galaxy S phones (after I said they were...). Then I asked about if we would actually really see it before the end of December and they assured me we would.
I call BS on anything they say anymore about updates, we won't see 2.2 (OFFICIALLY) from T-Mobile or Samsung by the end of this year.

Confirmation **Fascinate Update Around the 10th, OTA**

Just spoke to Samsung Rep and was told we will get an update next week around the 10th and IT WILL BE FROYO. It will also be Over the Air (OTA) not Samsung Kies.
Here is the exact transcript:
Visitor: I heard there will be one on the 10th
Visitor: Is that true?
Sylvester: Yes, there will be an update, but we can not speculate the exact estimated time of arrival as this would to inaccurate information and confusion.
Sylvester: However you will get a notification on to your device as it is an over the air update.
Visitor: What will the update bring?
Sylvester: It will come with more features for the phone.
Visitor: Such as? FroYo?
Sylvester: Yes, it will be Froyo.
Visitor: Will I get the update this week or next week?
Sylvester: It should be available in the next week.
sweet, if true. Been waiting to root for this to come first.
Well. That's a relief. But only those on DI01 on the stock ROM are getting it...
Plus you will probably lose root.
In other words, if you like being unrooted, wait for a dev to repackage it.

thats just a regurgitation of the android central article that says an update is coming and its listed as mr2...which has been first dj05 then dl09 now something comparable
I've seen so many of these threads across the message boards. So many confirmed dates have come and gone.
Move along.. nothing to see here
Ill believe it when i see it because on andriod central they had a screenshot of the VZW and it said 1/10/11 Samsung Fascinate MR2 meaning maintenance release 2 aka DL09 or DJ05
who cares anyway we have both of those MR already and birdman and Jt are compiling GB

Can someone tell me why a MR has to be DJ05/DL09 and can't be Froyo? VZW has released MR updates for windows mobile devices to take them from WM6.1 to WM6.5 or similar jumps in the WM world, and they were classified as a maintenance release. Why can't Froyo be a MR update as well? Do I think the update will be Froyo, no, but I don't see why a MR can't be Froyo.

i think that everything we've seen has said mr2 was dj05...then it was dl09....it would stand to reason that something similar was still coming out

John: Yes, it is the Froyo update and it will fix all the issues.
John: This should become available in the next few days.

I'm not confident in verizon's ability to keep a froyo leak from slipping out so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Better question is whether it changes anything for the DEVs. Does it make it easier to develop Froyo/Gingerbread?

Sense 2.0 on Evo 4G

Hey everyone, I was a little bored and I got curious as to when the new Sense UI would wind up coming over to the EVO. So, I did the best thing I knew how to do, I googled it.
And I found this, A guy named ONIXBLACK over on android central sent HTC (and Sprint, but he's waiting to hear back from them still) an email asking them about this question.
Here's the link if you choose to follow that thread for updates: http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc...-rep-has-say-about-sense-2-0-gingerbread.html
This is what they told him:
"Dear (MY NAME),
Good question, (MY NAME). I would be more than happy to provide you with as much insight as I can.
All I can really say for sure is that the Evo is going to get an update of some sort to, at the very least, address a few issues with the last update (streaming media, battery life, and a few other problems that have arisen). I have a feeling that this may end up taking a while, since we're thoroughly investigating the battery drain issue, and we want to make sure that it's 100% resolved, prior to releasing another update for the phone. You can, however, follow us on facebook and twitter. Once that Evo update is ready, we'll definately make an annoucement through both of these websites, as well as HTC.com.
Will this update contain the the latest Sense UI update? It's tough to say, a lot of carriers prefer not to share a full list of enhancements with our technical support reps, as they prefer to go for the surprize approach. I would imagine that with the Evo being Sprint's first 4G phone that in order to remain competative with Verizon's Thunderbolt and AT&T's Inspire, I can only really _guess_ that the Evo will eventually see the latest Sense UI (not only that, but speaking from personal experience, the Evo is the phone that we recieve the most request for the latest Sense UI). Bottom line, though; this is something left up to Sprint. We've forwarded many suggestions and many requests for this enhancement, so Sprint knows that interest for this exists.
Can't make any promises, but from what I've seen, I remain optimistic.
Thank you for taking the time to contact us, (MY NAME).
We are always happy to be of assistance. Keep in mind that we are here to answer any questions or concerns between 6am to 1am EST, 7 days a week for your convenience.

HTC
EDIT: I also asked about Gingerbread but she dodged my question
So far I have yet to get a response from Sprint"
I'd like to think that's pretty promising to me, but one can only hope.
Sweet. I really hope that the EVO gets the new sense 2.0 update. makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside when you read that email/question
As far as I can tell, he just received that email and posted it today too. So heres to hoping!

I'm going to call BS on that "reply."
Look at all of the typos.
I'd also like to sincerely believe HTC wouldn't hire a rep that would send a reply with the word "surprize" in it.
FAKE.

Here's even more evidence to show this is fake:
The lamer "onixblack" on the other forum posted this
As my title clearly states
I just received this from a HTC rep. Who dealt with some of my inquires in the past. This is NOT an official word from HTC

Reading the context of the supposed "email," they wanted it to sound as OFFICIAL as possible. Almost as if HTC really replied, but did a whole bunch of drugs and forgot how to compose good, professional sounding sentences.
What a joke. Try harder next time onixblack.
HTC at least hires people that can spell 5th grade level words properly.
Or you could flash a rom based off of Sense 2.0 and have instant satisfaction.

I am only aware of 1 EVO ROM that has sense 2.5
it is still in beta... Myn is working his Warm Z Rom.
it should be released in a week or 2.
which are you talking about???

The newest version of Sense is 2.0 not 2.5.

there are many, many roms with sense 2.0. none of them were ever very popular though.
IF this is real it's bad news... It confirms the next update will just be maintanance and not gingerbread...
Sent from my EVO using XDA App
Yeah, I'm calling total bs on this one too. Mainly because I just don't see an HTC rep "speculating" on rumors. Hell, they might even get fired for it.
Yeah... I didn't have to read the whole thing to realize it was fake.
I was in a Sprint store. asked one of the techs if the Evo was getting GB, he said "what is that". lol
Me personally I would rather have Sense 2.0 then Gingerbread. I have tried cm7 and really don't see all the hype. Gingerbread is just a skinned froyo to me. I must be missing something. I will wait for Ice cream.
I know there are some enhancements done but nothing I would cry over. Bring on Sense 2.0

well since there are probably speed optimizations in GB, and sense 2.0 on top, it would be > stock old froyo sense in a couple different ways
