htc dream keyboard with HTC magic? - G1 General

Hmm.
I've opened my HTC Dream, but I haven't been able to get my hands on a Magic..
The ram on the Magic is 192M, yes? And 128M on the Dream? This is a *huge* difference, as it takes what... 70M or so, just to load the OS, the home screen, an applet or two, and of course the 20M for the graphics chip...
So, that's a big upgrade.
Thing is, I've heard many a time, that the Magic is basically just a Dream. If so, wouldn't HTC have provided for hooking up a hardware keyboard?
Has anyone looked at the hardware inside, to see if it is possible to take the Magic circuit board, and slap it into a Dream?
I'd *happily* buy a Magic, swap the hardware, and use the old Dream board + Magic case for a backup phone...
So, anyone looked?

ALL 32B devices, whether dream or magic, have 192 RAM.
Oh, and you are forgetting all the RAM that goes to the RADIO.

Are you serious???
Is there a list somewhere, of 32B Dreams?
I'm with Rogers, and I must have a 32A, since I only show 97M free via, 'free'.
Hmm.. I wonder. When I opened this unit, the whole antenna assembly was on a separate sub-board... and I think it had a chip. I wonder if I could take that off, and affix it to a 32B dream...

32A has 288 MB ram.
And yes, your device, though 'free' shows only 97 MB actually has 192 MB. 'free' doesn't show the full memory, it only shows the memory that is available to the operating system. You lose a bunch to the GPU, the RADIO, the CAMERA, etc. Pretty nasty that you lose 50% of your memory to this stuff, eh?
Anyways, ALL DREAM are 32B. Some MAGIC are 32B, some are 32A. All HERO are 32A.
Edit: And no, switching boards around won't affect the RAM. The RAM is all on the mainboard.

Er.
Ok, you could have mentioned the 32A = 288M before.
Yes, the ram loss does suck. I haven't seriously looked at kernel size these days, I guess I'm still tainted from the small space that 2.0.x kernels took. So, while I realise the kernel takes space, I had hoped it was much less than that.
So, hmm. I guess the 32A must show about 96M more after boot then. That still must be quite a lot, because free does show available memory space for the home screen, widgets and so on.
Have you used a 32A before? I suspect it must seem much faster, considering it needs to swap out apps much less frequency, and can keep common stuff in ram...
That all being said, then, are there any 32A Dreams out there?
Hmm, I've just checked, and apparently my phone is a 32A (Rogers) Dream, but it only has 192M? At least, that's what it shows here, and what I'm seeing elsewhere...
Honestly, since there is nothing out there that has a keyboard, and is better than a 288M Dream... I'd like to move to that, instead of my 192M dream...
So, anyone.. ideas?

It can actually be SLOWER in some cases.
The reason for this is that with fewer applications in memory, there are fewer applications eating up CPU time.

There is NO SUCH THING.
All DREAM are 32B.
All 32B are 192MB.
I promise

Ok, so I see many posts are wrong, due to EB0/1 versus 32A/B confusion?
As for more RAM helping.. come on. Of course it will help. I could easily run some CPU intensive apps right now, too. By the logic you've stated, I should reduce the RAM on my phone from 192M to 128M! Then things would really fly! ;P Hell, by that same logic, I guess Apple is right.
We should remove multitasking from our phones!
While I appreciate your input, and your help.. as I enjoy aquiring knowledge, you've steered clear of every point but the one I'm interested in.
That being said.. back to the beginning.
I want to put a Dream keyboard on a 288M Magic. Has anyone looked, to see if HTC left space for the keyboard to connect, on the circuit board? After all, they may have at one time, been planning to use the same motherboard in a Dream V2.

all g1/dreams are 192MB
some dreams are ebi1 which means they are compatible with ROMS made for 32a MAGIC/MT3G phones
32B 2xx ram is for the 32b magic phones

Man alive!
I'll start a new thread, since this one keeps being hijacked...

lol.. of course you can't do this... the phones and the mainboards are a completely different shape. and why would a htc engineer add a keyboard header and all the supporting circuitry when laying out a mainboard for a phone that isnt going to have a keyboard? that's just a waste of space.
functionally and specification wise, a dream and a magic are basically the same. design wise, they are entirely different. like the difference between an original playstation and a psone.. its the same stuff, but in a totally different package.
See for yourself, here are the service manuals:
http://mikechannon.net/PDF Manuals/HTC Dream SM (A04).pdf
http://phandroid.com/htc-magic-manual.pdf

Wow.. no one seems to be able to read.
I've started a NEW THREAD.. ok? Ignore this one.
(thanks for the manuals, but they won't show if there any traces / pads waiting for the keyboard header to be soldered on. As for HTC doing this? They've already done it before, with other designs. The whole industry does this.... )

You're missing my point.. Even if the magic board has a header for the keyboard (or somewhere to solder one), its no use to you cos the magic board is the wrong shape to fit in the dream housing. unless you plan to have the keyboard hanging out of the magic on a ribbon connector, you can't do anything.

Dont put words in my mouth. That is NOT what I said.
I said that MORE PROGRAMS will use more CPU than LESS programs.
Given that MORE programs includes the SAME programs as "LESS" programs + some additional ones, you have MORE CPU being eaten. This has NOTHING to do with you running CPU intense programs. This has to do with CPU intense programs that you WERE running, but ARE NOT ANY LONGER, which are STILL tying up the CPU.

No. There was never such a plan.
The plan was that the ONLY reason why dream had a keyboard to begin with is that the VIRTUAL KEYBOARD was nowhere near ready at the time of launch.

It's clock speed out of the box is 528mhz for one. I'm sure it can be pushed further even.
Well i am not too worried about the processor since both are clocked at 528 but what worries me is the rom and ram which the HERO has 512MB/288MB ROM/RAM while the G1 has 256MB/192MB ROM/RAM. This might mean that the hero we have now might be just as slow as this new version. I hope not but the ram really worries me.

288 MB are enough for Rosie and the phone to work fast enough ;-)
The finished Hero looks pretty cool, as does the Sense UI interface. Can't wait for the inevitable port of the Hero's ROM to the G1
I would have to say that this is the first non physical keyboard I would consider buying. T-Mo US should have waited for Hero. Damn I would easily drop $500 for this unlocked. But I guess I will have to wait for the newest Hero port to the g1

It says the battery has a capacity for 7 hours of heavy usage, the dream only has 5,83 hours!
Looks nice!

Samsung i7500 / Galaxy

Anyone tempted? I'm thinking of getting one. From what I've read, better screen, better memory, better camera, standard headphone plug etc.
I am...just because of the amoled screen.
Better do some more reading on it. It comes with 128MB RAM (less than half of the Hero or Magic) and the same size screen (3.2" 320X480) as the Magic or Dream, just has AM-OLED.

comparing the rogers magic to the mytouch is lame.. anyone using the mytouch is gonna be on tmo & since the rogers wont get tmo's 3g its not in the same comparison..
edit: of course since the op didn't mention a mytouch it may be of comparison to them.. Also however there sig says htc magic which I believe means its the same as the rogers..
Sure tmobile could offer beefier fones, but they don't, but the fact that amoled is not being offered else where, I would get it just for that...

Nothing to do with installed/installing apps, it's the amount of memory the phone has to run apps and the OS (forget Sense or anything like it). Infact the Galaxy is supposed to have 7.5 GB of ROM according to the specs, tons of room to install. Just limited on how many you can run.

I'm getting one anyway, people that use it say it's fast and has no lag, plus the other benefits like the screen, earphone jack, flash, does it for me. Considered the Hero but seems to be too many complaints for my liking, gap at end of screen, bad reception etc.

Wrong, Rogers Magic comes with 288mb of RAM and 512 of ROM (Same specs as the Hero minus the Camera). Quite a bit of difference between it and the 32b boards your refering to, and absolutely kills the Galaxy's RAM. Here are the specs if you care to be informed.

32A or 32B - is it worth a difference of 100€/140$ ???

Hello!
A.t.m. I'm planing to replace my beloved "herald" with a "magic", as it's - in my opinion - the perfect device to suit my mobile-needs!
Unfortunately i'm living in germany and therefore the only "easy-way"-available devices are the "32b"-ones, which (with some patience) are available with an castrated 192 RAM for about 220€/315$ and an (again in my opinion) annoying vodafone-branding (anyhow i could live with that).
After hours of research in international markets, i found some 32A-offers, but as a conclusion it seems as - besides a long waiting-time because of the shipping - i have to anticipate with an amount of approximately 320€/460$.
Now i really would like to know your opinions, if the 288MB RAM is worth the 100€ ? Especially regarding comfortability, usabilty and especially future "XDA-Developers"-"Custom"-ROMs-Developement?
Thanks a lot in advance for any thought and any advice that might help me out of my misery!
Regards
Makula
P.S. The "Hero" is no option, as i hate the "bend" ;-)
I bought a brand new HTC magic 32A for 235€(960PLN) here in Poland and payed 13$ for unlocking it. So, find a way how to buy a phone in Poland and it will be much cheaper.
Nice idea! any advice where to look?
Thanks in advance!
Yes if you want to put different Hero type Roms, I am disliking that I dont have the extra 100 of ram, too many issues with trying to put Hero Roms on my phone,
It isn't needed anymore since we have compcache & swap.
Also Hero ROMs are terribly fast now on 32B too.
And 32B is so much cheaper..
I wouldn't buy 32A because there are too many bugs with screen blurring for example..
32B is perfect!

What? I've never had a blurry screen, the 32B has that issue but I don't think the 32A has. These

If I had the extra $$ I would buy the 32A, you simply can't add RAM. You'll hate it if your always wondering if it would have run smoother, faster and better with it though. JMO.

It isn't buggy. It also doesn't trash your sdcard. It kills some blocks after a long time, so you'll see a difference in the card size after a long time, i promise, long time.
And "these" phones are MyTouch3Gs, and they're a bit different from the other 32Bs.
And really, you don't need 288 MB RAM for a phone. 192 MB are enough, I promise that.
The dream has only 192 MB RAM too, and if the ROM wasn't made in 5 minutes, it runs really fast.

Yes, if you really want to run Hero as everyday-system, you can buy a 32A.
But personally I find the Hero UI is unefficient, slow (even on the HTC Hero) and doesn't look nice.
I think the hype arround the Hero is what it is - Hype - not more.
All the "oh-so-nice" features of the Hero can be installed from the market.

Facebook - Bloo (I think that's the name)
Flickr - Just use the browser
Additionally I don't like the Hero Browser.

HTC Peep (btw the slowest Twitter client I ever saw, updating tweets takes 1:30 mins) - Twidroid (very fast)
Facebook - Bloo (I think that's the name)
Flickr - Just use the browser
Additionally I don't like the Hero Browser.
Flash? This version shows you annoying ads, not more. Oh I forgot - it shows YOUTUBE, woow.
Full Screen Browsing? I want to see my status bar
Optical Bookmarks? Slow and only 2 bookmarks are fitting on the screen. I have to scroll much.

Sounds like you have hero issues. I can't help you with the opinion on the apps you mentio, I don't use them. I do like the bookmarkes widget , I can see 4 at a time. I also really like other parts of the Rom, but that's not what this thread is about.
I would still buy the 32a. It's not am upgrade after if you don't like the 32b your stuck selling or living with it. I'd rather have the extra and not ever use it than need/want it and not have it. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this.

Yeah, in the Bookmarks Widget you get 4.
BTW the Widget can be replaced by a live folder you can find on the market..
This is what this thread should be about ;-)
The 32B is so much cheaper ;-)

Look here: http://allegro.pl/item730320841_htc_magic_nowy_prosto_od_orange.html(use google-translate). 950zl=231euro. It won't be easy thought since hardly anybody uses ebay and paypal in Poland(allegro.pl was launched before ebay.pl).

And really, you don't need 288 MB RAM for a phone. 192 MB are enough, I promise that.

I have 32A and have zero problems. Matter of fact, it's alot easier to root and get ROMS on IMO. I also have the hero ROM and it was abit slow at first but after I overclocked with the overclock widget on the app store it was night and day. I love the phone now. I think I have had maybe 1 crash in over 2 months with the hero ROM I have installed. And to me, the flash web browser is the best I've seen. You get more of a desktop feel when surfing the web. Plus if you don't like it, I beleive you can turn off the flash.

Is the 32B basically a G1 ?

Meaning Theoretically things /roms applying for 32B should also work on the G1 ?

Exactly the same, except for the lack of physical keyboard on the G2.
Thanks!
This helps me because ive already read much 'bout saphire hacking but my brother is now going to get a G1
the mytouch also has more ROM so you can store more apps, so the need for apps2sd is irrelevant.

unless you like to put a ton of apps on your phone like me, I prefer apps2sd. I didn't use it at first and maxed out the stock ROM the first day I got the phone. and yea most of the g1 roms for the dream should work fine on the MT3G. the devs usually specify 32b compatible somewhere in the first post.

Can't have it all I guess? (Not really a rant thread)

Hello xda-ers!
I have been stalking around, tasting everybody's cooking for a couple of weeks now, and i have got to get something off my chest.
I did search, I do realize that what I am looking for can not be made and that its no one's fault (I might be giving htc a meaningful look right now).
I like a whole lot of roms and chefs here, I really do, but the rom I'm after seems to not exist - one of two options:
1. A hero rom with all the eyecandy, that's donut based for compatibility with newer apps like goggles and the like.
2. An Eclair rom that has video and youtube working.
And so I would like to ask of you wizzies, is there light at the end of the tunnel? Are things comming around? How do you see it?
Correct me if I'm wrong, hardware-ish the mytouch is 36 MB of ram shorter then a hero and a has a lesser camera, but its not like the hero is running its os on its last bits of ram or anything so basically what the hero can do the mytouch can do, no? Is it safe to assume that when the hero\magic gets an update (and I do hope that it does) someone could pull over some driver support for eclair or something?
Thank you all so much for all your hard work, you guys are the reason I love smartphones so much, I'm dirt poor but i promise I'll buy you guys a round of beer once I get out of college
Its a matter of time bro. Be batient. A month ago, none of the eclair roms had camera. Now they all do. A month before that none of the eclair roms had N1 voice keyboard. Now they all do. God knows what some of these amazing roms will have and do a month from now. [/good deed for the year]
Love the FAQ sig lol

1. The devs aren't the ones making the actual hero, they just make hero work with our phones. They can't just say "I want you to be donut", and it be donut. Htc decided to skip donut, and the devs can't do much about that. They can however give you 2.0 hero which is scattered about the forum.
2. Drivers, drivers, drivers. You know, the thing that appears in almost every first post for this problem

As I've said, I realize that.
My point is that apperently you can't cook rosie\sense\whatever onto a 1.6 rom without htc (Ref: "I might be giving HTC a meaningful look") and at the same time you can cook it onto a 2.0 rom - which means broken video drivers.
I'm sure there's a good reason for it, and this is not a rant, just needed to let steam out I guess.

LOL +2000
"if" you had searched you could have found answers to both of your questions... and maybe posted in the correct section.
maybe that "I might be giving HTC a meaningful look" should be turned into "i actually searched and posted in the Q&A section or the I didn't read before posting..."
No offence but seriously if you would have searched you would have found those 2 answers in almost every thread that had to do with hero or eclair...

I think someone leaked an HTC branded Eclair ROM with the "rosie/sense/whatever," and that's why you see it cooked into a 2.0 ROM.

It went off topic at the same rate the iPad went from wanted to ridiculed. What's so bad about that?
Well back on topic/kinda...
Do we know for sure that htc will release the necessary drivers for video playback/camera? It sounds like some people are positive we'll get them eventually...I switched back to donut because I like being able to watch youtube, but its amazing how far along eclair roms have come, and mad props to NCommander for reverse engineering the camera drivers. Without him we'd still have no camera at this point. But I was just wondering if its confirmed or not that we will indeed get those drivers from htc one day.
Well, T-Mobile is teasing us with an Eclair update for our phones. We shall see.
What I would REALLY like is a ROM that is smooth and as responsive and the one on the iPhone. Doesn't need fancy apps, just the basic things like Messaging, Phone, Browser, camera/camcorder, apps of course. Anyone else think the same? It's what I have been looking for , for a long time

There's actually one like that, it's called iPhone OS. I suggest you buy an iPhone and try it
