When I plug my usb cable in the phone beeps as if its charging but no usb icons come up.
usb debugging on is and its set to usb mass storage.
ive tried turning off the settings and then turning them on with it unplugged
any help would be great
Do you have the drivers installed?
Are you plugging your phone in through a USB hub or is it directly plugged in?
Do you have the usb icon in the notification bar at the top of your screen? If so just drag the bar down and click on it. It will ask you if you want to mount the sd card.

What ROM are you running?
I have the same issue. It seems these phones are EXTREMELY picky about what USB cables that you use. I don't have the stock one anymore (damn cat), I have a few LG's and two from a Droid 1. All of them I have to 'wiggle' a little bit to get my computer to see the phone. Please remember not to push or force the cord, otherwise you will snap the charge port.
- Also, yes I get the USB icon
- Yes it is charging
- Yes I have the right drivers installed
Also sometimes I get "this device can preform faster", it just seems to me that the opening for the cable is a odd size and the other non OEM cables do not fit so well.
I've had this issue with my wife's vibrant. I hook up to the PC and went I pull down the status bar and there's nothing about usb on it. It just charges. Help plz. I'm a noob in parrell

anyone find a solution? my phone will charge when plugged in but only randomly says its debugging (yes i have it checked). Also, when i unplug my phone itll still say its charging for like the next hour
What rom are you on, sounds like recognition issues. MIUI or cm7 may not recognize your pc, ie charging issues, different drivers.
Also it could be your cable, if you have another give it a shot, also if you haven't tried a different usb port, try that.

@fatchuckyd: not sure what your problem is, but try this out in your setting.
Go to Setting/Application/Development, then check on the first 2 boxes: USB debugging, and USB debugging notify.
Hope this help.
@WhiteBoyAwesome: use the original USB cable that comes with your phone.
Hey guys, so I noticed this the other day and I was just wondering if anyone has noticed the same problem with their USB cord that charges the nexus 7. It's still charging my nexus 7 perfectly fine and it functions normally, its just loose.
I don't have that problem with my USB cable. But when I plug in the cable, the plug seems to be at a bit of an angle. It's as though the micro USB port was put in the N7 a little bit twisted or something.

ive noticed that too, that could be the result of the longer side being put in on the top side instead of the bottom? I dunno, all i know is that ive never had this happen before on any other usb cable
When I plug my phone into my car for android auto I have to go to USB options and change it from charging to MTP every time. I've gone into developer options and tried changing the default USB action but it never sticks. Does anyone have any ideas?
I noticed that too. I think we are stuck with this behavior.
It's a pain. I just want to plug in and go
Hi, I've been reading but not posting for awhile.. I'm having a issue with my 6P, its not connecting to any computer anymore Mac or PC. It doesn't show up at all, nothing in the status bar to select from, I can see the charging icon show up but no way for me to access the phone to back it up, even in download mode or recovery the phone won't show up on any computer for me to back it up..
Swapped cables to connect to the computer? Changed USB ports? Removed drivers and rebooted?
Most definitely sounds like driver issue. If it was the cable, then I think it would not even charge.
Download the driver right here
Follow install instructions right here.
If you still have issues right click on the device in device manager, then uninstall the driver. Then follow the install instructions again.

Not necessarily true. Some cables only support charging. If you cut it (not that you would) it would only have the smaller red and black cables inside. You need the cable with red, black, green & blue or yellow. I forget. Think yellow. If OP is using a 3rd party cable that may be the case. Also, damaged cable may be the issue. Actually happened to me. My normal longer cable that came with the 6P got a little snipped on the outside and now it only works for charging. When I plug it in it says there was an error installing the driver, which are already correctly installed. I need to use that little mini cable now.
Probably is a driver issue, though.
Hmmm I can't see it being driver issue on both Mac and PC, on the Mac all I need is the app, I know it works because I tried it with a different phone, no driver involved with the mac.. Its not the cable because it charges and I've tried different cables before posting..

Hey thanks man!! I was not aware of that. I knew about USB Type C cables not meeting certain charging standards but was not aware some of the cables might be missing the data transfer wire inside the cable. I guess it is also possible the data wire could be the only 1 to break or fray, but chances of only that wire breaking are probably pretty slim.
It is kind of surprising that Nexus drivers are not automatically recognized and downloaded by now. Especially in Windows computers. Weird we still have to keep manually downloading and installing it when most other devices have their driver automatically installed when plugging it in.

I'm not using a 3rd party cable, I've been thru that, cable quality is not issue, I've used the cable that came with phone and new one a friend got with her phone two weeks ago. Like I said Mac does not need drivers just the app and thats it not only that if another works on my computer what does drivers have to do with it?
