Droid Eris Getting 2.1 NOW??? - Hero CDMA General

http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/17/some-droid-eris-owners-getting-android-2-1-update/

Hmm, if that is true, it would make things A LOT easier for the devs. We just need to see if anyone has a device that got updated.

A few did, and it's obviously horribly broken and totally not ready.
This should also say something to the people who are *****ing that Sprint is basically sitting on 2.1 and taking their sweet time getting Sprint NFL and Sprint Nav ready....

The article states that it doesn't have the new version Sense UI, so it's horribly incomplete.

Im more concerned about the .29 Kernel

There is the .29 kernel on there, but as said above, it is horribly buggy and broken.

But the devs would atleast have the .29 kernel... All they would have to do is add the new Sense which we already have, and then fix up the kernel. Surely fixing bugs in the kernel is easier than porting things?

The Eris kernel is slightly different than the Hero's, it probably won't work 100%.

Oh. I thought the only difference was the menu, home, back, etc. buttons.

Yea I heard they are identical except for the buttons.. and camera..

The Eris also has a Proximity Sensor.

Another 2.1 leak...

Not sure if this will advance anyones progress but just thought I'd share the info. http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/motorola-droid/1143-official-droid-2-1-update-leaked.html
Link on the post is broken
Its probably the same one the devs already have.
Looks like it is for the droid, not the eris, the droid.
True, I didnt read the whole link so I thought the "droid" part was for ""ANdroid"".
Hopefully, well get a Sprint leak soon, lol.
According to the site, what was leaked is not anything to use, but something for devs to cook something up. They also said that its probably not enough to even get started with. We'll see.

No the leak to the droid 2.1 the op is talking about in the first post
Droid ROMs are of no use to us...
Well, there was an OpenGL driver from WinMo that worked for our Heros... nothing really surprises me anymore.

We need to get Cyanogenmod on our hero.

We need to get Cyanogen a CDMA hero and see if he can cook us up the cyanogenmod. The g1 and mytouch are rocking it.

yeah hes ruled the roost of whatever phone hes using
wonder why hes never considered the hero

I would argue that Damage is our Cyanogen. I mean, his rom even uses a built in updater like Cyanogen. Plus it rocks.
DamageControl = Our Cyanogen. Duh.
We have toast and flipz and darch and treve.. All four are great. Damage is also good when he has the time

The hero has fully working 3D gallery with working auto rotate and multitouch. I'm using the same Gallery3D in ZenHero and it should work for every Sprint 2.1 rom.
Cyanogen actually releases his source code.
So that's at least one important difference.
We most likely won't get cyanogen around these parts because he stated before he doesn't like sense ui, so let's appreciate what we have,i think our devs are great anyways!
you guys do know my darchdroid rom is built from cyanogenmod sources, right?

You're really gonna mention these three without mentioning Darch?! That guy effing rocks. He started with a near cyanogenmod rom port, then ported AOSP 2.1, and an crazy good Legend rom. Im not gonna bash any of our devs, but Darch is definitely top notch. I know prolly just forgot to mention him and that you agree completely with me, I am just giving the guy the proper credit he deserves

i couldn't agree with you more darchstar is a amazing dev no need to upgrade to a nexus-one i know i have Darchdroid it owns all the right tweaks and mods and it keeps getting better try it and see
Darchdroid is a clean fast vanilla aosp 2.1 rom with no bloat what so ever if your a fan of cyanogen Darchdroid is the closest thing to a cyanogenmod rom your gonna get on your hero
and i'am pretty sure owners of other phone models wish they could have a great dev like darchstar cooking roms for them were lucky to have him xda-devs own
The previous 2 posters speak the truth about Darch, he is one of the few that thinks outside the box, I have been running his Darchdroid 2.1 OC+JIT for over a week without a single problem!

Thats exactly like using a gsm hero's source code for our development. I don't really think so. but i could check it out and port some heroc stuff to see if it'll work
We've ported Eris dumps and Legend dumps (their source is also out). I understand it won't go straight out of the box, but since the Eris is almost identical to the Hero we have, I would think modifying it for us wouldn't be an issue. Wasn't the only difference hardware-wise was the light sensor on the Hero versus the proximity sensor on the Eris?
My luck...it'll be that camera again.

do a string search for heroC in make menuconfig for both droid eris source and hero cdma source and tell me if you see the board configs for our phone in both of them. Its not as easy as porting roms from the same architecture as ours. If you noticed, in all the ports we replaced the kernel in the boot.img with our own leaked .29 kernel
This can only mean one thing. The update is near.
That's cool. Just an idea since it could be a while until we see our source code release. Wasn't trying to ruffle any feathers here.

I may be wrong and we get it within a week or two after release (hopefully, I am wrong). I'm going by the last time source code was release, which was four months later.

This leads to the question of why it was released with the 2.1 update...is this a new HTC or does Verizon have a hand in this?
Either way, this is nothing but good news for us and future Android phones.
Hopefully, it's HTC learning from the delay lessons of 1.5. If not, I guarantee that Sprint won't go to bat for us getting the source code...that may eat into their potential revenue for the Evo.

sprints never going to go to bat unless it affects their bottom line if it doesnt get relaesesd we will have to do the same thing we did when getting the source for 1.5 and start an email and call campaigne hopefully that wont come to that though as I think the 1.5 delay was becuase of the way that the kernel was hacked together to get CDMA support and with android now nativly supporting CDMA it hopefully wont be an issue.
Ahh really? Our soucre code for the. 29 kernel is the last thing we need. An overclocked kernel with working camera! oh well, I hope we can get it shortly after the 2.1 update goes live

so is that pretty much it for ROMS?

Before I rooted I would read all these posts about how great the roms would be after Sprint released 2.1. So finally I rooted this weekend, and as I look through all the ROMs they all have major issues, and a lot of the major players have moved on to the EVO. So is that it. As soon as 2.1 comes to us we are left with a bunch of roms that don't work any better, or worse, then stock? That is unless I'm willing to cut out all of HTC and Google software.
Please give me advice as to what I do with this rooted phone now.

Not all of the phones have major issues if u read a lot of the roms they tell if they have any. Also there r stock roms that can be overclocked. We've had three or four devs leave to the evo. That not the end of the world plus they left with final full working roms. If ur not happy with something then for it itself or realize nothing is perfect and that these devs spend a lot of there free time cooking there roms and get real tired of hearing people complain about something that us free. Be a little grateful. Read, search, to a little homework and then ask the questions u have inside ur head before u post a dumb question
Look around, no one here is going to hold your hand.

I would chalk up the majority of the "user problems" to user error such as not wiping between flashes or bad 3rd party software with memory leaks or preventing the phone from sleeping...
Sadly a good number of devs went on to the Evo, even worse is some left in the mid of new releases without fixing some bugs.
Even though a couple of the dev's have moved on, there are still some great ones working on the hero. There are at least 6 or 7 fully functioning roms built on 2.1 right now and there's even some movement on 2.2.

Lol, I have been a member here for more then a year, but I don't post because I know what you get here when you post, I had 2 people call my question dumb or call me ungrateful..
Anyways, I was not being mean to the devs. I think their feelings are still intact (those who have not left)
As for reading and searching the forums, which the "positive" posters repeat like a mantra.... well I have been reading, I've been reading like crazy, and All I see are problems with the Roms because no one ever posts positive feedback.
However, I gather from those more productive posts here that the ROMs are very good quality. So from here ill try them out myself, and refrain from posting again for the next year.
Thank you and sorry to all those with tender feelings who where offended by the simplest of posts.
Just an FYI for everyone Fresh just put out a 2.5.2 BETA to donors.
I assume he will leave this one in 100% working order before he dumps the hero for good.

I haven't run a damaged ROM in weeks - I went from him to Darch which I feel is the end all.

Aloysius 2.1 is rock solid, fast, chocked full of goodies, and did I say, STABLE. Blows any stock Sprint ROM out of the water. DarchDroid 2.7 is good and fast if you like AOSP. And I liked RegawMOD a lot too (use Honeybun OC kernel for extra speed). Plenty of others out there as well. I really liked the Blue ROM but my Hero won't load it. Just try them and quit worrying about it. Use apps2sd and then nandroid and you can go back and forth without losing your apps.

Defy got CM7 Port

If the Defy can do it, why can't we? It has a locked bootloader too. I bet I sound pretty stupid because there is something I'm missing, but oh well...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
A quick glance says that they're using update.zip files to clobber /system, so they're not touching the bootloader. So this should be doable, although I believe that our CWM could use some more work.
