I've seen plenty of posts about cracking the screen from dropping but nothing like this...so far..?
The other day I had my phone in the side pocket of my car door. When I opened it somehow the phone slipped out and fell hardly 30cm on to the ground...landing on its screen. I couldn't believe it when everything was fine other than the glass covering the camera lens had shattered...
I'm guessing this is an insurance claim unless it can be seen as a defect
Has anyone else managed to do this or was it just very very unlucky...maybe the glass can just be removed completely?

I took my Xperia to Malaysia for vacation and when I returned, front camera glass coating is somehow broken. If you look close, its like covered with web of microscopic cracks. Something very similar happened to my glasses once, some problem with antireflex coating. Anyone got similar situation?

I have the exact same problem. I don't know the situation surrounding how it came to be or under what circumstances it can be re-produced. I just noticed one day that all pictures taken came out fuzzy and the images seem like they've gone through the "posterize" filter in photoshop. The phone is awesome, but there are just so many issues with the hardware. I definitely feel I over-paid for what I got. If everything worked the way it should, then it would certainly be worth the premium, but this simply was not the case.
i read this problem a while back and quickly slapped a cut up screen guard on the camera. It helps a lot,the coating is still good

Same here - took a microfiber cloth (same used for glasses), sprayed some camera lens fluid and rubbed for a good 2-3 minutes.
And did it help? Or is my phone ready for RMA?
Okay, so here's my story. I am on my third D.Inc at the moment. I just got it in the mail yesterday. The first one I had I put a screen cover on it right away. This phone fell a bunch of times, nothing crazy but just normal use stuff. Then one day it fell literally from a foot above the ground and the volume buttons stopped working after that (I use the vzw silicone case on all 3 dinc's btw).
I brought it to vzw and a new one was sent in the mail to me. My second dinc, i decided to not put a screen protector on because the screen just felt soo smooth. Plus, before i sent in my old one I checked how "scratch-proof" the screens really were and to my surprise I couldn't do any damage to the screen. I know dirt and sand will do worse than a steak knife, but it was nearing winter and i didn't think i'd be at the beach for a while so that was not a worry for me.
I had the second dinc for almost 3 months and the screen still looked great. One day, i was getting out of my car and i forgot my phone was on my lap and it slid out and hit the ground face down. When i picked it up, the screen had a huge spiderweb looking crack. I've dropped this phone much harder and in worst situations so I was quite surprised to see it cracked.
Now my question is, will a screen protector help protect the screen from cracking (I'm not talking about scratches, i mean the glass actually breaking). I'm not sure if I should order a screen cover or just leave my screen naked.
Any ideas?
edit:
With the dinc that was cracked, do you think it was because it was so cold out and possibly fell on a rock on the pavement? or does anyone think that a screen protector could have saved it?
Gorrila glass is pretty good. I did the lap drop thing too and if not for my case(edges wer above screen).the phone slid for a while screen side down but was fine .that said dropped on carpeted floor and speakers broke.warranty. warranty warranty

yeah i feel like it had to have landed on a small rock or something because i've seen phones drop a lot worse.
do u use a screen cover?
Yea. Gotta ten pack cheap. Just piece of mind prolly. Case is what saved me really. Kept screen above most of the ground while slidn.
sent from dinc
I dropped my phone on a sharp corner of a marble statue about 20 seconds after putting a screen protector on and no cracked glass. Just a small "dent" in the protector. Oh well, I got 3 for $3 on Amazon.
It can have a lot to do with how the phone landed. I believe landing flat on the face would be a worst case scenario. Landing on a corner or edge would be less likely to cause a problem.
My camera stopped working (auto-focus is jacked up) after a 3 foot drop onto pavement which landed right on it's back. oh well... live and learn
I now use the HTC silicon case and I feel it's protected better. I've used a screen protector since day 1. I've had other touch screens look like crap after a few weeks of no protector.
i haven't used a screen protector since i got the phone back in may or June of 10. dropped it a bunch of times and no damage to the screen just a couple tiny dents in the front bezel. at least once the phone dropped on a hard floor from ear height so about 5.5 feet. been lucky i guess.
yeah i know of a lot of people with dincs that don't use screen protectors and have dropped their phones many times and haven't had any problems..
i guess some people are lucky and some are not
I finally decided to do away with my screen protector after it started peeling. I'm going naked now and living on the edge.
I think this definitely helps your screen not to crack. I had a protector from Clariview that made it so you couldn't see the screen from the sides, so it was pretty thick. My phone got knocked out of my hand without a case and flew about 10 feet before eating it on the ground. The outer part of the screen wasn't cracked, but the actual display was underneath. I have no doubt the screen protector saved the outer part.
i use the otter case and my dinc has survived a flight of stairs and my driveway

I doubt it would help, I think the angle has a lot to do with it webbing like someone mentioned earlier. Mine shattered with a screen protector... I still have a screen protector after I fixed it but no case
I have had my Inc since launch and I have dropped from about 3-4 feet about 4 times over that time... no screen protector or case and no cracks just some 1 mark along the outside. Maybe I've just been lucky.

Hello everyone. I've been using my S4 for quite some time now, almost a year. I always kept in its protective case and had a screen protector from day one. Never dropped it. Virtually no scratches on the screen protector. A few days ago I noticed something that looked a bit like cracks. I'm attaching some images, here's how I can describe them:
they're underneath the glass
there are no markings, scratches or anything on the surface of the glass or the screen protector in that area
the sensitivity of the digitizer has not been affected, nor has the display itself
they are advancing very slowly, the first day I noticed them the smaller ones were barely visible
they almost look like air pockets in the glue that keeps the display and digitizer together (?), cracks are not that wide i think
never buying a Samsung phone again
Is this a common/known issue ? I've seen and used tons of smart gadgets, but this is the first time I've encountered such issue.
Thank you
this is really interesting

yeah thats the adhesive between screen and the glass peeling off..
Not sure what to do here. I could try to _gently_ apply some heat (via a hair dryer), but I think I rather send it to an authorized service. It's still under warranty and it's not my fault so they should fix it for free. It's not that much of an issue now, but it will kill it's resell value later. One thing to learn out of all this : Samsung - never again. Sony and LG look so much better now.
Voting for a 1.april fools joke. Seems like you've just scratched the top layer film. The clue is where
the scratch ends that has accumulated plastic (white dot)
Sorry to O.P if I'm wrong!
Once I'll get home, I'll try to snap a picture with the screen protector raised. I don't want to remove it because it was a pain installing it. It is underneath the protective glass, I didn't even give it a thought that today was April 1st.

Ok, that's the best I could, it's not really confortable holding the camera while I lift the screen protector while I try to keep it in focus. These screen protectors tend to build a lot of moisture underneath them, never expected that. Anyway, you can probably see, the problem is not a scratch on the screen protector.
My bad, proof enough! I feel sorry for you, never seen that one before.
If you now you haven't done anything wrong the blame is on Samsung. Maybe you should go with your initial thought about sending it in under warranty.
Itcould be they have seen cases like this and know about the problem. Fixing yourself seems risky. There are guides
changing the touchscreenglass on youtube.
Good luck, wathewer you choose to do! Please report back to this thread if its get fixed or not.
So yesterday at the start of the day, the sensor looked acceptable (it had scratches you had to want to see.) However now it's really bad. It looks like some kind of coating or something chipped off of it and has scratches all over over it like as if a knife got to it.
How did this happen? Well I work at Disneyland and I wear a different set of clothes depending on where I work. So i wore a pair of pants never before worn and it scratched it up while working. Pretty cheap ass crap on OnePlus's part.
My question is how can i repair this and does anyone else have this problem?
P.S. There is also dirt under the flash lens now too. Anyway to remove that?
So I was a idiot and pushed my luck by not putting a case on this thing cause videos had shown me it was very duriable..well watching a video with friends about how duriable it is, i had dropped it from literally 1 and a half feet, landed on its left corner and cracked from the volume button to the S in samsung, it doesnt look that deep or to even be a crack, at first i thought it was a scratch but it seems to.be a light scratch, so I was curious if it was still waterproof, like using in the shower or rain, or if it fell in the sink or if it fell in the bath tub. $200 to repair the screen is ridiculous.
bump? seriously wondering about this
It probably depends primarily on whether it went all the way through. If it didn't I'd think you're still waterproof. If it did, it still might be if it's holding tight enough, but obviously that's now a pathway in. Really hard to judge that without seeing the crack/scratch in person...and even then it's pretty tough to tell.
Guys
I kicked a ball at my Window the other day, Its now marked, do you think it will still be weather proof?
This thing that may be a scratch or crack, do you think it will still keep the cold out.
Just wondering what you thoughts are on my cracked screen.
(use your imagination if you want to see it)
I also have a hole in my Umbrella, You think it will leak?
it is late to reply, but I can suggest.
in Samsung phones, front and back glass are stuck to the phone by strong glue all over. now if your display is intact but has damaged glass, the display and glass are glued all together. even if your glass is broken badly, water can touch the OLED screen but can't cause any damage to display. still, the phone is water resistant. still, water can't penetrate inside the phone.
