Ok, so I am from California and currently living in the UK... So I have one of the T8585 models... now I know that I am going to lose my 3G connection when I go home so now I am thinking of buying one of the Telstra T9193's to work on home networks (AT&T).... but looking a bit further at the specs of the 9193 the bands for 3G are listed as 850/2100... so does this mean that if I travel back to europe with an american sim in the phone I would still be able to have 3G connectivity? If I wait for the T mobile version which I assume will be 850/1900, if I return to Europe I would have the same problem as going back home with the T8585... Seems ridiculous actually, you should be able to get a phone like this that can maintain connectivity regardless of where you travel. I remember this problem when I first moved over to the UK and had to get a Razor, just for the quad band so I could use it on both sides of the pond... Oh well, would really appreciate it if you guys had any thoughts on these assumptions and maybe shed some light

Hi !
Though the question is quite old, the answer is still interesting for anybody planning to travel or intending to buy an overseas model.
I personnaly had to resign on finding an US T-Mobile HD2 because of the 3G bands problems : our local operator decided to use 2100 MHz to cover the capital, but 900 Mhz for the rest of the island, so I was forced to stick to the European model, in order to be connected where I would need it the most, i.e. in the bush.
I could find an interesting website listing a lot of models, and able to compare them, so just have a look by yourself to this one :
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer&id1=1783&id2=2062&id3=2059&id4=2192&del_id=2062
As you can see, the only differences (apart from the US T-Mobile 1024 MB ROM I'd dream to have and the 2 mm longer bottom border for the different antenna housing, given that the 576 MB RAM are actually present on all models - it's just a question of flashing the appropriate radio ROM) are the UMTS/HSDPA bands frequencies.
European HD2 (T8585) : 2100 and 900 MHz
Australian (Telstra) HD2 (T9193) : 2100 and 850 MHz
US (T-Mobile) HD2 (T9393) : 2100 and 1700 MHz
The 2100 MHz is common to all of them... Too bad a lot of operators choosed to use the other band.
P.S. : There's even another model, the AT&T HD2, featuring 1900 and 850 MHz UMTS bands, the same size as the European model (but featuring the green and red buttons), but having the 1024 MB ROM...
You're the only person to ever mention a 4th model, got a link?
In a former thread I posted the following list of HD2 I found the last two years:
1. T-Mobile US PB81120 (more memory for T-Mobile requirements and for USA specialized radio chipset)
2. European HD2 PB81100 or T8585 (specialized radio chipset for Europe)
3. Asia/Pacific (Telstra) HD2 PB81110 or T9193 (specialized radio chipset for Asia/Pacific)
4. Chinese HD2 T9188 aka Tianxi (with specialized radio chipset for China and design adjustments)
5. Dopod HD2 T8588 (identical to T8585 apart from dopod logo)
Ah I was ignoring the dopod, it was the line "there's even an at&t model" I was querying.
As for the 9188,, does that even count as a hd2? Different codename, different case, slower processor, doesn't mention hd2 anywhere in its details,,,,
Here for the US AT&T 1900/850 MHz HD2 (don't know the series number) :
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=2062&c=htc_hd2_us_htc_leo
Here for the DoPod T8588 2100/900 MHz HD2 (actually identical to the European model) :
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=2386&view=1&c=dopod_hd2_t8588_htc_leo_100

You have a cooked rom installed so you will be presented with the bands from the stock rom that the rom was based on, not what the hardware is set to.

That had crossed my mind but thought it would pull band data direct from hardware.
Bit of glitch, can this band data be corrected ! is it registry based by any hopeful chance ?
could be, and im no longer on winmo and cant remember anything specific.
Id maybe fire up 'cereg editor', load up my registry and do some searches, see if anything turns up.
It doesnt really matter, the correct settings will be used, it wont affect the function of the radio.

Would like it to show correct bands just to refresh my memory of actual hardware bands when choosing options as travel a lot, although never had a connection issue abroad yet !
Will do a search on XDA & my registry & see what comes up.
---------- Post added at 04:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:31 PM ----------
Found them in Registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\BandType
Any one got the default TMOUS key value data from this path for reference ... ??
The choice between the bands may be set in the registry (band 1 / band 2 / auto), but not the frequencies, of course.
They are hardware only. Hence the different models.
So anyone got the standard TMOUS ROM & show me what options are for Bands.
I want my menu to show correct data for each option related to my TMOUS hardware not the data for the 6.5.x custom ROM donor devices hardware.
I more than realize band frequencies are not adjustable via reg keys.
Simple enough for anyone on standard TMOUS rom to look .
Thanks,

not quite sure how to search this so i guess ill ask (or reask) the question.
1. am i able to reflash my Leo to work with USA ATT 3g bands if a rom ever comes out in the future?
2. can someone confirm to me if step #49 of this tips and tricks thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638) and that piece of 3G activation software works and can allow my Leo to work with ATT 3g? (i dont think it does)
thanks!
1. Nope. It's all hardware.
2. See above. Nope.
It's all edge, my friend!

The HTC HD2 will not use 3g in the US. But since the phone is so fast, browsing the internet using edge is faster then with 3G on a sony X1a (my last phone).
do you already have an HD2? Regardless of anything you've read thus far, 3G is hardware dependent. No USA 3G internal radio? No USA 3G.
If you don't already have one, just wait until next month because the HD2 is supposedly coming to Telstra (who operates on 850mhz 3G, just like AT&T). HTC have said that the HD2 is coming in Q1 2010 but it's more than likely going toward T-Mo (based on leaked pics) or other carriers other than AT&T.
ah well i was under the impression that the hardware was both same for euro and us releases and just the software controlling it was different...(and how come they didnt name it the T8582 vs the T8585 as with the HD1 standard for the 2 different radios?....how they gonna distinguish the different hardware HD2s?)
come next year i may just sell mine for the new one (testra one you said). i dont suppose that tmo one will work with att 3g as its on a worldwide 3g band huh.
truly is a nice phone no doubt still
T-Mo US operates on 1700mhz AND 2100mhz for 3G (someone correct me if im wrong...one for uplink and the other for downlink). ATT can operate on 850mhz OR 1900mhz. The European version only has 900mhz and 2100mhz. As you can see, if you use the HD2 in the US (t-mo or ATT) right now, you're restricted to only EDGE unless they both possess their respective 3G bands.
this is what someone on htcforums.com said to me...confirm? deny? reject? love? i guess im just receiving conflicting info as to why this guy would believe this then?
"What you are asking about is a software differentiation. According to PDADB.net, the HD2 US version is scheduled for March 2010. http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=2 ... us_htc_leo
The GSM version currently available is capable of T-Mobile US 3G frequencies; as T-Mo is the only US company to use WorldWide frequencies {2100MHz}. The version that is scheduled for March will be for AT&T frequencies. Since the hardware on these two versions are identical, you could flash a WorldWide version with a US version radio, & use a WW version with AT&T."
Your link doesnt work. I don't want to beat on a dead horse, but countless of T-Mo USA users have the HD2 and they could only have access to EDGE. Like I said, for T-Mo USA, their 3G has a split frequency (one for upload the other for download) that's why you need both 1700mhz and 2100mhz.
thats the link

this on HTC's site
Europe: Network Bands
* HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz
* GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz <------
Asia Pacific:
* HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz
* GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz <------
which means it can work here no? since USA att 3G is 850 or 1900?
* HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz <--3G
* GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz <-- EDGE
Your problem is that you're looking at the voice/2G/EDGE bands. The HD2 is a quadband phone, so you can pretty much use it anywhere in the world. Your original question was regarding 3G, which the HD2 does not support here in the USA (yet).
3G would be this line HSPA/WCDMA. See how it's only support 900/2100mhz?

GSM is voice and EDGE (data)
For ATT the key is 850mhz 3G as that what ATT has been adding, I don't believe they are doing any new 1900 towers. You can bing it there are lot's of articles about the iPhone congestion and changing/adding 850 towers. If we are lucky Telstra an, Australian carrier, will pick up the phone soon because they use the same 850 just like ATT. This is how people got the 3G on the HD(1) to work on ATT in the united states. HTCPedia posted a Telstra HD2 rom on Dec 9th, so hopefully they are close to releasing.
i am stay in england. i want to buy the new hd2.
thx

I agree with the lack of 3G being an issue, but I've gotta have a great big LOL at the size comment. LOL mate - funny.
I've been meaning to ask this question. So how much difference is the size? I heard it was not very noticable. I saw a link that was posted to a blog somewhere. I'm not sure how credible that source is. Is it taller or wider? By how much?
i just know the euro version is 448MB RAM + 512MB ROM but, t-mobile us is 576MB RAM + 1GB ROM.

It's 1.5mm taller - that's all (EU HD2 is 120.5mm and the HD2b is 122mm tall).

The EU version also has 576MB RAM. It's just the ROM that's different.
It is 1.5mm taller. I'm not sure that it will not work on 3G in UK: from the specs it seems that it DOES support 2100MHz UMTS (band I) so it should work in Europe. Notice that the G1 had the same specs and many users reported success when used in Europe.
In that case the European ones should have worked in the US (still talking of 3G of course), but we know they don't...

No why should they? It is very simple to understand how 3G works in different place and with different phones:
T-mobile 3G network operates on UMTS band IV (i.e. 1700 MHz upload and 2100 Mhz download).
ATT operates on UMTS bands II and V (1900 MHz and 850 MHz).
Most European networks are UMTS band I (2100 MHz) and sometimes band VIII (900 MHz).
Now, the specs of TOMUS version of HD2 says that it works BOTH on band I and band IV. That is why it can work both on US T-mobile network and in Europe. It cannot work on the ATT 3G network though.
The EU version of HD2 works on bands I and VIII so it cannot work on either of US 3G networks.

OK, hadn't seen that.
Here is the relevant part from the TMOUS HD2 specs:
Band (frequency): 850 MHz;900 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz;UMTS: Band I (2100);UMTS: Band IV (AWS);UMTS: Band IV (1700/2100).
I'm living in US now but I'll move to Switzerland within a few months. I have ordered this phone for myself since I want to use in Europe.
Btw kilrah, maybe when I arrive in Zurich (that's where I'm going to live) I'll come and visit you
Unlocked TMOUS For Sale
I have one unlocked that I might sell if TMobile decides to charge me a restocking fee to return it. Given the demand I was thinking of selling it for $550usd.
I'm just a little bit confused. read up on a bunch of posts here that talks about the different models there are right now..
from what i've gathered
US t mobile = pretty much T8185 but with 1gh rom
EU = T8185
AU = t9193 with 850 band frequency coverage
so which version do retailers in asia carry?
thanks all.
cheers.
ok..I want to correct you...in europe the HTC HD2 is T8585
t8585 model
thanks for the help!
Determine Model of Phone?
I just received my HD2 from an internet retailer, and 3g doesn't work with T-mobile US.
In band selection it has 900 and 2100 as UMTS options and no mention of 1700.
How do I determine exactly which model I have in my possession? I'd like to have all the facts before I ***** these guys out and demand a new and correct phone.
I tried to check the radio and rom versions, but I couldn't see way to tell the versions apart.
ROM 2.10.531.1 (82076) WWE
Radio 2.08.50.08_2
Ram size 576mb
If you want a phone that is compatible with TMobile in the US, you need to buy it from... drumroll... TMobile in the US. No one else is compatible on their 3G net.
The TMoUS will have TMobile right across the top of the screen.
The 9193 will have NextG and "T" on the lower third of the back case.
The 8585 will be completely unbranded, as far as I know?
I'm living in Singapore, bought mine from starhub,
The model is T8585 and supports all frequencies [HSPA/WCDMA/GSM/GPRS/EDGE (900/2100/850/900/1800/1900 MHz)] , so it'll work everywhere

Thanks for the info mazzarin,
Somehow 3g started working.... maybe I just needed to leave the house. 3g was showing in the status bar before, but failing to connect. My phone says T-mobile across the top, and the UPC on the box seems to be a US phone; however, under settings-->wireless control-->phone-->Band it still lists UMTS (2100+900 as an option), which doesn't make sense.
Any idea what this means?

The Telstra 850+2100 phones say the same thing. Just ignore it. The bands are determined by the hardware amplifier circuits on the phone anyway. You have the TMOUS HD2, so you are fine. (Other than their tiny network )
The network may be tiny, but 2mb/s down and 1 up is pretty good. Coming from AT&T service, I'm impressed with the speed. Now I can't just leave any major city

I'm very surprised to hear that your 9193 locks onto an H or 3G icon with Vodafone. EDGE, sure, but that's 2.5G data, not 3G.
The 9193 supports 3G/HSDPA on 850 and 1900MHz
The 8585 supports 3G/HSDPA on 900 and 2100MHz
Everything I've read about Vodafone points to them using 900 & 2100MHz bands for 3G/HSDPA.
band
i am using 900 2100
i used a cab to add more bands
BAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! ROFLMAO
You're an idiot, stop posting misinformation.
If you use Telstra then you need the t9193 model but if you use any other provider you will need the t8585 model to be able to access the full 3G service, I could be wrong but that's what caught me out.
I am on Vodafone and I have the T8585 with H E 3G & G bands via 900/2100.
gamecore is correct T9193 for Telstra, and T8585 for others eg Vodafone etc...
ok i am new to this but can someone tell me what's the different between
the
T8585 and the T9193 (i know that the T8585 is the one with the 512 rom) so is the T9193 the telstra verson of the HD2?
i am going to america next month and just to make things clear
(i am on optus)
if i want to buy a HD2 with the 1GB ROM it won't work in Aus ?
so should i buy the normal verson of the phone (T8585)?
if i just want to use the phone for call, text, mms (no internet browsing) can i get the 1GB one ? or would i still get the T8585?
so if i want the phone to be able to use the internet(not wifi) "on the go" and check e-mail i will need to get the T8585 right ? ( the one with less rom?)

STHD,
A brief lesson in mobile phone protocols, and which model supports what:
T8585 & T9193
Worldwide
GSM, 850/900/1800/2100MHz
GPRS, 850/900/1800/2100MHz
EDGE, 850/900/1800/2100MHz
T8585
Australia (Voda, Optus), Europe, Asia
3G/UMTS, 900/2100MHz
HSDPA, 900/2100MHz
T9193
Telstra AU, USA (most), Japan (I think)
3G/UMTS, 850/1900MHz
HSDPA, 850/1900MHz
So,
Both the T8585 & T9193 can use the following services worldwide, on any carrier that uses the GSM (NOT CDMA!) mobile network:
* Calls
* SMS
* MMS, assuming you have some sort of data plan supporting GPRS or better.
* Mobile web & email, but only at GPRS (data rates of 56-114 kbit/s) or EDGE speeds (up to 236.8 kbit/s).
The T9193 supports 3G/HSDPA on 850 and 1900MHz - Telstra & most US carriers use these frequencies for 3G data.
The 8585 supports 3G/HSDPA on 900 and 2100MHz - Most European, Asian and all other Australian providers use these frequencies for 3G data.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Mobile_telecommunications_standards for a heirachical view of the technologies.
Three key points here:
1) You can't (AFAIK) buy the T8585 model from a network provider in the USA. They will all be T9193 models.
2) If you're *visiting* the USA, and indend to to use the phone on Optus when you return, buy the T8585 model from somewhere in Asia or Europe (http://Handtec.co.uk is my personal recommendation). You can still use the phone when you go to the USA for calls, sms, and gprs & edge data, and get full 3G/HSDPA speeds when you come home to Optus.
3) Ignore the 1GB Flash ROM on T9193 model. The T8585 comes with an 8GB SD card - just install all your apps on the card. This has the additional benefit that you don't need to re-install every time you flash another ROM.
Make sense?
Phrak
So basically you need the T8585 for Optus.
If you get the T9193 for optus network you can do everything that the T8585 does but you wont be able to use 3G it will only be 2G or slower for web and emails on your phone.
ok thanks Phark that really help me out working out the issues
just to point something out from Phark post
T8585 Should be T9193/T-mobile verson
Telstra AU, USA (most), Japan (I think)
3G/UMTS, 850/1900MHz
HSDPA, 850/1900MHz
not picking on you (Phark) but just want to make sure everyone gets it or else it will be confusing (am i right?lol)
but another thing is that on the htc website it says that the aus verson (T9193) of hd2 uses "Australia: 850/2100 MHz" i donno if the info is wrong or what...
Also T-mobile and [HD2 US(from PDAdb)comming soon] have 576Mib of Ram which is 100 something more then T8585
So i guess i will get the T8585(Will get that in HK)
Haha and i really like how Phark quote *visiting* USA...but i am really going there Haha
Thanks again Phark and also thanks gamecore

Unsure about that one, sorry. Everything I've read (up 'till now!) suggests that the T9193 was 850/1900 - *Do* take HTC's word over mine though, you can always claim false advertising against them ;-)

The T8585 *does* have 576MB of RAM, enabled via most ROM Chefs. I'm unsure of the technical changes to enable this, but I've just (double) checked my T8585 HD2 from HK, and it says: "RAM: 576MB; Flash Size: 512MB"

LOL, I meant "visiting" in the sense that you weren't moving there permanently ;-)
Glad I could help. Have a safe trip, and good luck buying your phone in HK!
Phrak
Oh so you brought your phone from HK too? is that through the internet?
Or Do you have a shop that you recommend?(cos i know they sell phones everywhere) i live near mongkok and they have a whole street which sell phones
Thanks anyway
hd2 telstra t9193 - Vodafone Australia
Hey Phrak,
This is the cab i used for geting the extra bands
http://htcpedia.com/forum/showpost.php?p=57342&postcount=6
is this the correct band for Vodafone Australia?
UMTS(900+2100)+GSM(900+1800)
If not what should it say???
Is there a hardware difference that the t9193 will not have the correct data connection? Or is it just software?
Interesting CAB - I've just found the same software built into the latest ENERGY ROM I've flashed to my Leo.
More research is needed methinks. I'm more than prepared to be proven wrong on the T9193 supported bands.
Good day guys. I need your help. I want to replace my motherboard because processor wont work properly(freezes, green screens etc.). So i want to know, is there any difference between international ver. of hd2 motherboard and T-mobile version, and could I buy T-mobile motherboard and replace it in my international hd2. If it is possible, so i want to buy this motherboard
cgi.ebay.com/HTC-HD2-Unlocked-100-Working-motherboard-only-/230603065490?pt=Cell_Phones&hash=item35b1038892
(and if you will find some analog, please let me know)
Thank you for helping.
I believe the T-Mobile motherboard/main board is slightly larger in size to the international HD2 do to the more rom space and things on the T-Mobile version. So you can probably interchange a international main board with a T-Mobile HD2n but I don't know about a T-Mobile main board in a international HD2 as the actual outer casing is smaller than the T-Mobile.
Thank you for fast answer T-Macgnolia. I was thinking about it(i mean different sizes etc) but may be it's still possible, i mean ... its probably my last chance, so if you are don't know, for sure there is someone else, who tried this and know that it works, or know for certain that it's impossible. But anyway i need to replace it, doesn't matter t-mobile or international ver. of mainboard. I just couldn't find international ver. yet. So guys if you have any links of selling this motherboard, please let me know(doesnt matter where, may be in europe too).
I've got the same problem and I've done some research on it, but I'm still not really sure whether or not the international motherboard can be replaced by the T-Mobile one.
Here's what I found out:
(quotes from another web-site)
"Memory:
T-Mobile HD2: 576MB RAM, 1GB ROM
HTC HD2: 448MB RAM, 512MB ROM
The T-Mobile HD2 has a 128MB RAM advantage over the HTC HD2 if we are talking about the stock specs. Latest developments demonstrated that the International HD2 has the same amount of physical RAM, but the additional 128MB has been hidden and thus unavailable, but unlocked via applying custom ROMs.
As far as ROM is concerned, the T-Mobile HD2 has twice as much storage memory than the international HD2, mainly because of the customizations the operator version has (not to mention the Entertainment package including Barnes & Noble eReader, Blockbuster on Demand - Blockbuster’s first-ever video download application on a smartphone, MobiTV, Gogo Inflight Internet Services - six month trial for inflight wifi services on over 2,500 daily U.S. flights and Slacker Radio)."
"Bands:
T-Mobile HD2: WCDMA/HSPA: 1700 MHz (AWS) / 2100 MHz, GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz.
HTC HD2: Europe: HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz, GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz. Asia Pacific: HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz, GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz.
Main difference here is the one and only vital one: the T-Mobile HD2 supports the 1700 MHz band not supported by the International HD2. Additionally, we've posted about how to get AT&T 3G speeds with imported Telstra HD2 from Australia, which supports UMTS 850Mhz."
But still there's one thing that makes me still hope the international version can run with the T-Mobile MB: regardless the fact that the T-Mobile version is 1.5mm taller they both weight 157 grams and plus to that, I think it would be smart move to manufacture the other phone parts in such a way that they would fit both versions.
I hope I'm gonna get some answers from a couple of GSM services I've contacted lately and get back to you with the answers. Brace yourself! =]

T-Mobile is strange about sizes and custom phone cases. My previous phone was a TP2, and the T-Mobile version had a completely different case and front, for no reason that I could see except looks.
So, I got some answers. All of them conclude the fact that it's impossible to use a T-Mobile MB on an international version!
Reasons why:
- the T-Mobile motherboard is longer, so you'll have to rethink how to attach the motherboard to the housing;
- on the international version the flex cables and all the other cables are soldered to the motherboard, while on the T-Mobile version they're connected through various connectors.
Bad news, bad news...well all you can do now is hope to find a used and working motherboard, buy a phone with a broken screen or something else (those cost as much as a used MB) or sell the phone for parts...
Good luck! I'm gonna need it too ;]
Hey spnk! Thank you so much for help and your great research!
I had a thoughts like that, but still got a hope ^_^. However now the story has ended.
I've bought a new one from taobao, costs much cheaper than on ebay(ofcourse it's chinese assembled, but it says "made in taiwan" , so i dont know anything about "makers", but it's well built).
I left old, "broken" one for parts. Who knows, may be it will be usefull.
I hope that you've solved problem with your's.
Best wishes.
