How to connect to internet through Proxy using IE or Opera ? - HD2 General

Hello to all any people able to answer to the following question:
On my HD2, I tried since a long long time (too long !!!) to connect to internet through the proxy of my company and I never succeed.
I was able to connect with my HTC Touch P3450, but with the same parameters on my HD2, I never have the popup requesting me my name and password for passing through the proxy, and so I always have the famous message : DNS not found !!!
Just another information: I'm able to surf on all pages of the INTRANET of my company, but unhopefully, not on INTERNET
I will be very happy if someone get a solution

Did you try to configure the DNS manually? The primary DNS is the default gateway of the router.
tell me if it helped.

If your company has Wifi..why do you need to connect internet through proxy?

Because almost all corporate and academic LAN requires you to use proxy server for security reasons.

oh..I see..so can I use this way to connect internet through proxy at my home..I'm using Lan server not wifi? Is it possible?

You are not getting it properly, The corporates have in house LAN (Local Area Network) which connects any number of computer systems they have. Individual computers don't have internet connection but are connected to internet through proxy server.
What you have at home is not same you have a computer connected to modem using a LAN cable which is not same. your computer is directly connected to internet.
However you can still use public proxies to maintain your anonymity online. use proxy dot org or other similar site.
and lets just keep this thread free of information other than HD2 !!!
Cheers!!

how to syncronize outlook via VPN & unstabile wifi conne

Hello,
i have a qtec 9100 and for e-mails I use our company e-mail (microsoft exchange server over VPN).
I have the VPN conection already created but how can i turn it on when I need to syncronize e-mails or how should i configure my outlook so it would syncronize via "My Work Station" not via "Internet"?
Also I have a problem with wifi connection.
It is as unstabile as possible. Even when I sit next to wifi router it sometimes disconnects me and will not connect again.
Is there any possibility for me to upgrade the driver or what else could I do?
Marko
i dont have a problem with wifi and use it daily.
it can have performance issues if you wind back the setting to preserve battery, but I dont find it much of a problem at all.
in relation to VPN, a bug in this device that wasnt there before is a need to go into network settings and connect the vpn manually first, before it will work.
in relation to activesync, if your work is using 2003, there shouldnt be a need to use vpn, you should be able to use activesync via gprs/3g/wifi without a vpn, though I found that a bit unstable.
an alternative for email is to use "webmail" which is also possible on your device, but over gprs might be a bit slow.
not sure if you have encountered yet the need for the exceptions to be used for the IP addresses at work that you are using within the VPN settings

that one (excuse my english - third language only) i didn't understan, can you please explain it, thanks

firstly, is your exchange server at work 2003? you dont need to carry your laptop to access exchange server 2003 activesync with your PDA, you can do it direct to your PDA over the internet, if your server is so configured to allow external access to activesync.
exchange 2000 and 2003 also have the ability to publish all of your email, contacts, diaries over the internet via what is called WebMail, similar in nature to a hotmail account or Gmail account. This is done using Pocket Internet and allows access to everything, but your servers need to be configured to access the webmail. It will normally be a secured site, and is accessed in internet using an address similar to https://myservername.com.au/exchange. Then just put username and password.
To get to VPN, Start > Settings > Connections. Go to Connections, locate the area where you have placed your VPN connection, probably my isp, find the VPN tab, press and hold it, press connect. Yes, if you want talk about to many clicks, this is a very long way. You used to be able to do it via the antenna picture on the menu bar, but its gone now and I dont know how to get it back. Have you setup your VPN connection?
A bug in the device is that depending on the circumstances, you try to connect your VPN, it drops off when you try to use it, such as run terminal server or activesync over the vpn connection, it will simply disconnect. this is due to a stupied MS setup whereby it disconnects the moment you try to run any address that has a "." in the address over a "My Work" style connection.
Is your firewall stopping you from accessing the? What is the router configuration? Are you using WEP encryption? Broadcasting your SSID? or are you accessing the settings on your router and allowing a connection based upon named devices such as MAC addresses? Is it established as an access point with security or an adhoc connection?
Further questions, we may have t work on a PM basis if you dont know what these statements mean, and address them one by one, or pay an IT technician that is MCSE qualified to get this working in about 30 minutes.

vpn connection (pptp) disconnects

I want to use PPTP vpn connection to my work together with Remote Desktop (Teminal Service) application.
The PPTP vpn connection is established successfully.
From my work PC I can ping the pptp ip address of my PPC.
However if I switch to an application which would generate internet traffic (such as terminal services, internet explorer) my PPTP connection drops.
On my vpn server I get the logs and see the disconnect reason as "user requested)
What is the problem ?
Thanks...
hi,
I guess nobody has such experience with vpn connections.
where can I find information about this problem ?
thanks
Hi, I have the same problem more or less
see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291208
I have the same problem when trying to use Skype. My office also requires the use of a VPN (PPTP) when connecting via the wifi.
Skype connects, I can make calls, but the connection is dropped after 30s (the VPN is closed). Oddly enough, it I have the impression I prevent the VPN connection from dropping by using Pocket Internet Explorer at the same time (I have tried creating a website that automatically refreshes every 10s, but this didn't keep the VPN open). The Messaging client als shows odd VPN behaviour: it always closes the VPN, and opens it every time send/receive is selected.
I suspect not all programs keep the VPN open, even despite the fact that those programs are generating traffic over the connection.
Any hints or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Jorg
(sorry, I can't edit posts in Opera Mini)
MarsRover: I have changed the AlwaysOn registry setting in the registry (in the folder of my work vpn). Ii appears to have changed the Messaging behaviour (but I need further testing to be sure). Tomorrow I'll see if it changed the Skype connection.
Thanks for the suggestion, if it works it ought to be put in the FAQ.
Jorg
Hi,
MarsRover,
I couldn't understand the solution. Can you explain ?
My situation is :
I am using Wifi connection to access internet. This connection is selected as my internet connection.
My pptp vpn connection is set under my Work connection.
So when I use the pptp connection I connect to Work over Internet.
But then it gets dropped if I open internet explorer.
If I set "*/*" to my intranet addresses, I have to connect to everywhere over my VPN connection. This is not good because I don't want to use VPN connection for Web browsing etc.
There must be another way ? Don't you think so ?
Btw, if I set AlwaysOn to "1" in registry , and then check it back after a connection is made, I see it is "0" again.
Hi
You do not have to redirect all traffic through the VPN you can pick and choose under settings>connections>advanced>exceptions just add the urls you need. ie so instead of */* use the specfic range ie 10.0.0.*/* or whatever range your work uses. One more issue however if the wirless ip range overlaps the internal VPN work range you may still have isssues. ie if your wireless ip address range is 10.0.0.x and your vpn range is 10.0.0.x then even if you add 10.0.0.*/* in the exceptions it may still try the wireless link rather than the vpn link for your TS etc. If you get my drift. There is a discussion on this here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-217422.html
Stephen
Thank you Stephen.
In fact, I am aware of how the exception list works. I can add the IP addresses which I want to reach via work vpn.
However, I still wish that there was a way to use VPN connection manually without using an exception list.
Isn't this possible ?

Messenger using port 80?

Is there such a thing?
Im using unlimited internet plan for port 80 which means i can surf over the net for html pages with no additional charge.
Now my question is if theres a messenger that uses that port so i dont must wifi or data plan to use it?
Thanks.
eran.
im not sure but you could try ebuddy, or any other html based messenger
if you have access to a vpn, ssh-server or a proxy server you can tunnel your connection through them which is supported by almost every mobile messenger client.
hi,
use open vpn, a good solution to create and use a tunnel via your pc connection, than your pc will be the server that you can connect on with your 3g+ connection.
i tried that today with success, and used msn messenger and push mail, all with my wap Sfr connection, that use the port 80.
use google for research, and send a message if you need help....i'll try even if my english is not perfect....but think i can help.

you can use a simple ssh server for tunneling, too. that's more simple than the configuration of a whole vpn.
First you have to have con trol over such a server (I use a vserver of mine), than have the server listen on not only the ssh port but also a http one(if you have a webserver too running in the ssh server host, you maybe can't useport 80, but luckily my provider has also port 8080 open, because it is often used for http proxies).
now download pocketputty from the internet.
in the session tab enter yout servers ip and choose ssh, but change the port to 8080.
now go to the tunnel tab (as there are many tabs, maybe you cant see it at first, but it's there).
now you enter a free port on your mobile in the source field (I use 50 for example), the destination is the ip of your ssh server, and check dynamic. now click add.
then change back to the session tab, give you settings a name in the field stored sessions and klick save.
now the settings are stored and you can start the connection by double klicken on the name of your session that is now listed unter (Default Settings) in the sessions list.
The ssh connection will open and you will to have to log you into the ssh server, with a user (the name is not important, and it needn't to be the super user ;-) ), that has a shell.
when you're logged in open your mobile icq client. now go to the proxy settings of it and choose socks as proxy server type, the proxy address is localhost and the port the one you chose in the source field in the ppcoektputty tunnel tab. (so putty is your local socks proxy server).
now you should be able to connect thorugh the ssh tunnel to icq.
if you use your mobile sionmetimes as modem for a laptop, the trick works very similiar with the normal putty and a non mobile windows ;-)

I really got lost...
I couldnt find application for ssh server which i understand how to work with..
i wouldnt mind some help...
first you need a server in the internet for that, because you need an endpoint for the ssh connection.
as i said i have a linux server under my control. if you don't have an internet server or access to one with a ssh account, which I doubt reading your post, this solution isn't maybe the best for you, because have such a server costs about 8-10 euro or dollars a month, and as I need it for other things to, this costs are ok for me.
an alternative maybe would be an vpn account by a vpn provider which costs less, but then the way to get it to work is a bit differnet.
I just thought I could set up such a server on my own computer...if possible.
I did understand i can do that, but i didnt understand how
Nevermind, I will try other solutions..
thanks
hmm, this would be possible, but your computer would have to be reachable under a fest address from the internet (which oculd be done using dyndns). Are you using windows or linux in your machine?
Usually my computer is online all the time, so it wouldnt be a problem
And using a dynamic hostname with dyndns is what I thought about at first place.
my pc is running windows

instead of XX.xx.xx.xx you must fill your internet IP thaht you can see here http://www.ip-adress.com/, and may be you have to change port to 443 instead of 80 in config files....that works with me,dont forget port forwarding in your router if you have one, mens you have to redirect incoming connection on port 80, and 443 to the pc that have openvpn.
but first of all you have to make your server work on the pc, some times you have to kill openvpn activites making CTRL+ALT+Del, to make open vpn GUi work and the vpn connect....see for next episode.
Ok,
im kind of stuck again....
I configured the vpn program and did everything by the guide,
Now i need to add a vpn connection to my regular 3g settings?
I did that, with my IP address, and it asks for user and password
i assumed its tcp-client like in the config file,
and password one of the keys in key.txt file..
but it doesnt work.
or i didnt do it right.

PS: the client config must be in the config folder of your ppc with the key....personnally i made a copy of the key in the base folder of the device cause sometimes the key is not detected in the config folder.
and important to set your connection on "my work network" not wap in the avanced connections configuration.....but tell you make a seccessful vpn connection first and for the ppc its will be a joke...

Remote desktop works on 3G and HSDPA too, but it won't connect on its own.
You have to activate the "Data Connection" (for example via CommManager) before starting the Remote Destop app.
Actually Remote Desktop will only work on 3G and HSDPA if the 3389 port is not filtered by your carrier.
In my case...only the http (80) ,smtp (25), imap (143) and pop3 (110) ports are not filtered...
You will probably need to set your router up to forward the port to your vista pc.
I have RDP setup and can connect by connecting to my routers external ip (or you can set up a dyndns account and go to the domain name like I did)
You just specify the vista pc ip (if it has a static ip) in your router config and direct all incoming RDP requests to the specified ip.
I tried and forwarded 3389 from my router to my pc to which I tried to connect. It worked indeed. Slow as hell (too slow to work with), but proof of concept.

Same here. Not slow or anything. Ok for viewing documents or performance graphs.
For first-time users I recommend, in order to get the best experience:
In "Options" set it to "High color (16bit)", "Full screen" and "Fit remote desktop to screen".
PS! I'm not sure how much more bandwith is used when setting it to use "High color", so if you don't have unlimited data plan or are not using wifi - watch your data counters.
Somehow it doesn't work for me. I'm connected over wifi, I set address, name, login .. it blinks .. and nothing happens. No error. Any idea ?
You have to open the rdp-port in the computers firewall too. And vista has be to setup for accepting rdp-connections.
i am no power user.. so i use logmein.. its easy !

WM 6.5.3 and Native VPN......

Hi I recently signed up for a StrongVPN 3 Country deal to give me a stable VPN connection in China. I have set up all ok om my home PC and it works fine allowing access to sites otherwise blocked here.
Then i set up a VPN connection on my HTC Touch Diamond2 I can get the VPN to connect using either IPSec/L2TP or PPTP methods, however neither Tunnel seems to allow Internet access to either MS Explorer or Opera Mobile 10 or any other internet program.
In fact when i have established the VPN connection and then start my internet explorer or any other program which needs to access the internet then the VPN connection is dropped.
If I connect the VPN tunnel on the TD2 i can site there watching it for ages so it does not seem to be dropped after any specific time frame, only when I start an internet access program. for instance if i open my Hotmail account then the VPN connection stays until the point when i tap send and receive then it drops immediately and the hotmail account then synchronise mail via the standard wifi connection.
I also set-up my home PC to allow incoming connection and then set up another VPN connection on my TD2 to allow it to connect to my home PC. but whilst i can connect to my home PC i can not surf the internet using the VPN tunnel......I had thought that i might be able to start the StrongVPN connection on my homePC and then access it via the VPN connection from my TD2 to my HomePC but it does not seem to work that way.
My objective is to use my mobile phone to be able to surf social networking sites that are otherwise blocked by censorship.
Sorry for the long post but please could anyone with advise or experience at setting these two functions up on WM 6.5.3 please advise.
Well I think I may have found out the reason for the VPN connection to drop out....I needed to change my setting in CONNECTIONS and where before i selected my GPRS or EDGE service provider i now need to change that to "My Work Network" as this is where i set up the StrongVPN connection. now i have done this change to the settings the VPN connection does not drop out when any Internet program is started.
But I still can not access the blocked websites using StrongVPN on my WM device so I do not really know if it is using the VPN connection or not.....
im also in china and got one vpn for the same reasons as u and having exactly the same problem as u..

StrongVPN Help desk advised me to input their DNS server settings in to the VPN account settings. I will try this when i get back to China in September. the DNS settings are found by edit the VPN account then next, next and select "Advanced" then scroll to "Servers" there you can select manaual server address and use the one that you VPN service provider recommend.
Let me know how you get on.
I have a similar problem here. I have setup the VPN in network connections but am still unable to surf blocked sites. The VPN worked fine on my PC. I have also changed the DNS setting for the VPN but no luck. But since there was no popup windows telling me whether it is connected or disconnected, how do I know the status of the VPN connection? Thanks!
to see if you are connected just tap on the top info bar then u should see your wifi connect and also your VPN connection. if you enable sound notification for connections in sounds then you will also get an audible connect and dissconnect to let u know. remember to set all your connection settings to "work connections" as i fount if not then when u open opera or other program that needs internet connection it will disconnect the VPN connection.
Thanks. I have tried that and the VPN was online. But opera was just couldn't open any page. Eighter the factbook tab in TouchFlo3D couldn't login. Any idea?
Have the same problem connecting to my home network - Remote Desktop works fine, until I open a browser on my HD2 - changing settings mentioned above didn't help...
Ok - it seems like I've managed to discontinue the connection drops to VPN.
Added wildcards to exceptions http://*.* and https://*.*
This way everything that tries to connect to internet connects via VPN. To stop that - in Work network setting select the same connection you use to connect to internet (Connections > Advanced > Select network)

I'm not sure what you mean by "added wild cards to exceptions"....what exceptions and where on your PDA did you add them?
As far as I was aware you are only able to set up a VPN connection in the "My Work Network" connections area. then to stop your VPN connection from being dropped by any application that access the Internet, you simply change your options to BOTH use "My Work Network" then the VPN connection is used for all applications.
However that said, I still cant access blocked sites using my VPN connection with StrongVPN in China. even after setting my Server DNS to that of StrongVPN it still does not work.
Anyone got any ideas why or how to access blocked content in China on their PDA??????

Great. Let me know if you get any updates. I'm still stumped on this one. What ROM are you using in your Diamond?
