vpn connection (pptp) disconnects - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I want to use PPTP vpn connection to my work together with Remote Desktop (Teminal Service) application.
The PPTP vpn connection is established successfully.
From my work PC I can ping the pptp ip address of my PPC.
However if I switch to an application which would generate internet traffic (such as terminal services, internet explorer) my PPTP connection drops.
On my vpn server I get the logs and see the disconnect reason as "user requested)
What is the problem ?
Thanks...

hi,
I guess nobody has such experience with vpn connections.
where can I find information about this problem ?
thanks

Hi, I have the same problem more or less
see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291208

I have the same problem when trying to use Skype. My office also requires the use of a VPN (PPTP) when connecting via the wifi.
Skype connects, I can make calls, but the connection is dropped after 30s (the VPN is closed). Oddly enough, it I have the impression I prevent the VPN connection from dropping by using Pocket Internet Explorer at the same time (I have tried creating a website that automatically refreshes every 10s, but this didn't keep the VPN open). The Messaging client als shows odd VPN behaviour: it always closes the VPN, and opens it every time send/receive is selected.
I suspect not all programs keep the VPN open, even despite the fact that those programs are generating traffic over the connection.
Any hints or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Jorg

(sorry, I can't edit posts in Opera Mini)
MarsRover: I have changed the AlwaysOn registry setting in the registry (in the folder of my work vpn). Ii appears to have changed the Messaging behaviour (but I need further testing to be sure). Tomorrow I'll see if it changed the Skype connection.
Thanks for the suggestion, if it works it ought to be put in the FAQ.
Jorg

Hi,
MarsRover,
I couldn't understand the solution. Can you explain ?
My situation is :
I am using Wifi connection to access internet. This connection is selected as my internet connection.
My pptp vpn connection is set under my Work connection.
So when I use the pptp connection I connect to Work over Internet.
But then it gets dropped if I open internet explorer.
If I set "*/*" to my intranet addresses, I have to connect to everywhere over my VPN connection. This is not good because I don't want to use VPN connection for Web browsing etc.
There must be another way ? Don't you think so ?
Btw, if I set AlwaysOn to "1" in registry , and then check it back after a connection is made, I see it is "0" again.

Hi
You do not have to redirect all traffic through the VPN you can pick and choose under settings>connections>advanced>exceptions just add the urls you need. ie so instead of */* use the specfic range ie 10.0.0.*/* or whatever range your work uses. One more issue however if the wirless ip range overlaps the internal VPN work range you may still have isssues. ie if your wireless ip address range is 10.0.0.x and your vpn range is 10.0.0.x then even if you add 10.0.0.*/* in the exceptions it may still try the wireless link rather than the vpn link for your TS etc. If you get my drift. There is a discussion on this here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-217422.html
Stephen

Thank you Stephen.
In fact, I am aware of how the exception list works. I can add the IP addresses which I want to reach via work vpn.
However, I still wish that there was a way to use VPN connection manually without using an exception list.
Isn't this possible ?

there is also AnthaVPN from AnthaSoft but it's not very reliable.

Bluefire seems to work fine with IPSec, but I need PPTP (IPSec requires NAT-T in most cases with GPRS/3G).

GPRS and Static IP with VPN

HI guys,
Does anyone know how to get a static IP address when using the GPRS connection to the internet. The reason being is because our corporate firewall has to recognise the device through it's IP. Is there any other possible methods for recognising the user?
Also does a VPN work well over GPRS and is there any extra configuration involved on the VPN server
Cheers
Any answers would be great.
Unfortunately there is no simple answer to your question. AFAIK you cant get a fixed ip on gprs, but if your using the right firewall and the right vpn host you dont need to.
I use and supply windows sbs 2003 servers and vpn into them regularly. I have also used citrix to achieve similar results. Might be a bit difficult to persuade your firms it dept to set up something like that for 1 person though.
PM me if youd like any advice.

Hello Billy,
You ask a good question, but the answer isn't simple. Most carriers do have two types of APN (Access Point Name) provision for your SIM: "private" APN (which provides a non-routable IP assignment from behind a NAT, for basic browsing and e-mail functionality) and "public" APN (that provides a routable IP assignment, which is the Minimum Requirement for a more sophisticated connection type, such as VPN, etc). However, both of them are assigned by a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Server on a GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node) of your particular GPRS network operator. In either case, the end result will obviously be a DYNAMIC IP address on your GPRS terminal (be it a laptop PC, a PDA, or phone)
Some carriers do offer what is called a "dedicated APN" provision, which gives the subscriber their own IP range to choose from (almost like a small subnet), but it is only available to corporate giants like Pepsi (for example).
Now, to sum it up, you must have the proper APN provisioned on your Mobile SIM account (which the provider will normally call something like a "VPN data package" in billing terms). Then, you must obviously establish a GPRS session before you can connect your VPN client (but remember that most basic VPN clients work the best). It is pretty sad to say, but Microsoft Windows-embedded VPN client on Win2k/XP Pro so far has performed the best with no quirks whatsoever. It has to be via PPTP...L2TP has also worked for me..otherwise, the fancier (and more secure) the VPN tunneling protocol, the more its likely to fail. Normally all you need for a basic MS WIndows VPN client config is the Server name (or IP address), the user name, and the password.
Hope this helps,
Let me know how it goes,
Alex

VPN and TS Its like pulling teeth
hi all this has got to be the most anoying problem ever. i can connect to O2 vpn access point and hence i can connect to my work vpn server. however as soon as i try to open a TS connection to my desktop (through the vpn) the VPN connection is dropped and i never connect. Can anybody tell me why? if i have a vpn connection to my work server why does TS try to make another connection and bomb out the original. Is there a fix or another way of doing this i.e. does a external IP have to be nat'd to my desktop IP on port 3389? all help greatly appreciated. Ian

how to syncronize outlook via VPN & unstabile wifi conne

Hello,
i have a qtec 9100 and for e-mails I use our company e-mail (microsoft exchange server over VPN).
I have the VPN conection already created but how can i turn it on when I need to syncronize e-mails or how should i configure my outlook so it would syncronize via "My Work Station" not via "Internet"?
Also I have a problem with wifi connection.
It is as unstabile as possible. Even when I sit next to wifi router it sometimes disconnects me and will not connect again.
Is there any possibility for me to upgrade the driver or what else could I do?
Marko
i dont have a problem with wifi and use it daily.
it can have performance issues if you wind back the setting to preserve battery, but I dont find it much of a problem at all.
in relation to VPN, a bug in this device that wasnt there before is a need to go into network settings and connect the vpn manually first, before it will work.
in relation to activesync, if your work is using 2003, there shouldnt be a need to use vpn, you should be able to use activesync via gprs/3g/wifi without a vpn, though I found that a bit unstable.
an alternative for email is to use "webmail" which is also possible on your device, but over gprs might be a bit slow.
not sure if you have encountered yet the need for the exceptions to be used for the IP addresses at work that you are using within the VPN settings

that one (excuse my english - third language only) i didn't understan, can you please explain it, thanks

firstly, is your exchange server at work 2003? you dont need to carry your laptop to access exchange server 2003 activesync with your PDA, you can do it direct to your PDA over the internet, if your server is so configured to allow external access to activesync.
exchange 2000 and 2003 also have the ability to publish all of your email, contacts, diaries over the internet via what is called WebMail, similar in nature to a hotmail account or Gmail account. This is done using Pocket Internet and allows access to everything, but your servers need to be configured to access the webmail. It will normally be a secured site, and is accessed in internet using an address similar to https://myservername.com.au/exchange. Then just put username and password.
To get to VPN, Start > Settings > Connections. Go to Connections, locate the area where you have placed your VPN connection, probably my isp, find the VPN tab, press and hold it, press connect. Yes, if you want talk about to many clicks, this is a very long way. You used to be able to do it via the antenna picture on the menu bar, but its gone now and I dont know how to get it back. Have you setup your VPN connection?
A bug in the device is that depending on the circumstances, you try to connect your VPN, it drops off when you try to use it, such as run terminal server or activesync over the vpn connection, it will simply disconnect. this is due to a stupied MS setup whereby it disconnects the moment you try to run any address that has a "." in the address over a "My Work" style connection.
Is your firewall stopping you from accessing the? What is the router configuration? Are you using WEP encryption? Broadcasting your SSID? or are you accessing the settings on your router and allowing a connection based upon named devices such as MAC addresses? Is it established as an access point with security or an adhoc connection?
Further questions, we may have t work on a PM basis if you dont know what these statements mean, and address them one by one, or pay an IT technician that is MCSE qualified to get this working in about 30 minutes.

vpn client?

hey guys,
am trying to connect to my office's VPN with my vario II. the default software provided does not seem sufficient. for one, i have one of those security key ring things which means my password changes every time i want to connect.
my pc uses cisco's vpn client...
any ideas? right now i'm just synching my exchange server with my pda using activesync, but wouldnt' midn having it on the go! there's no "external" access as such for the exchange server - it does have a web front end but its highly customized and isn't as easy as just configuring it as an external data source on my pda...
This one works perfect for me..

We use AnthaVPN at my university and it's supposed to work quite well with Cisco concentrator gateways, but be warned, if you have the latest 3.3 aku, you might run into problems like I did regarding loosing 3g internet connectivity on your hermes. However it could have just been a fluke as I didn't bother trying a fresh install of antha after a hard reset or anything since 3g is just as fast as my universities wireless internet anyways
Hope this helps
You can also try Bluefire. They have a 30 day fully functional trial version.

I have installed this but can't see any way of configuring the VPN connection. How did you configure it?
You have to use the PC client in order to create a configuration file and then transfer the file to your device
duh!
thanks!
bluefire is amazing. i bought it.
I came close to getting bluefire to work on our Cisco network... But once connected it would not transfer data.
I read on a seperate post here that alledgely the medianet unlimited plan uses the wap.cingular access point. That point is NAT based and some vpn clients do not like that... So they refuse the connection based on changing ip addresses.
I am not a networking expert so I do not know if this is in fact the case.
I do know I tried every freakin setting for bluefile and could not get a vpn tunnel from my phone to our Cisco vpn... So I gave up!
NCP
Could I get more specific infos about bluefire? They wanted a 5 page survey before they would send me a (business) trial.
Well, NCP Secure Entry VPN Client works perfect for me with Lancom and other standard firewalls. And yes, configuration is made with a Win XP Desktop Application. Nice about this: They got a Desktop VPN client as well which will be configured exactly the same way. So if you got a working setting for your Laptop you can manually copy the settings and they will work on the PPC as well - thats what I did.

WM6 Pro includes both a PPTP & a L2TP/IPSec VPN client. This will work with most VPN routers & firewalls, however they may not be configured to support it. If you can connect using Windows 2000/XP's built-in PPTP or L2TP/IPSec VPN Client then you can almost certainly connect with WM6's.
A lot if VPN Routers & Firewalls are supplied with a 'free' Windows client that has the documentation geared around it. However most (if not all?) of these products will work with the native VPN client in Windows 2000+ (and WM5/6). I would try and stick with the L2TP/IPSec client but this requires some additional steps over setting up PPTP - on both the client & server (router). It is worth the extra steps in my opinion though.

I have the same problem ... I am not able to connect using the default VPN client ...
Hi,
There's a great review of vpn clients by Menneisyys in the Wiki. It's entitled:
'Access Your Desktop PC From Your Pocket PC!'
I'm sure you'll find it very useful because it would point you in the right direction as regards VPN tunnelling to your Uni's server.

HI!
Thank you for your reply, but this articles are about "Remote desktop" - like solutions for WM - based devises. Not for connecting to VPN.
Did anybody have had any success so far?
Any working 3-rd party VPN clients / Solutions?
Thank you in advance.

Hi,
You might find Manneisyys' review very long but if you take your time to read it, you'll see that he talks about the various VPN clients and how they compare. VNC, VNC+, etc are all mentioned there.
Just take your time to read it.

Nice article, is the VPN working?
Do you have the WM6 VPN client working? Specifically the ActiveSync -> VPN -> MS Exchange functionality that was there under WM5?

But. Once again: the article talks about REMOTE CONTROL with the use of things like: RAdmin, MS RDP, etc.
This sofware - are remote desktops, so called VNC, not VPN clients in a classic way.
There is a little mess we get at the moment. (I've defenetelly got)
Let me describe in detail:
People need VPN here for many reasons, for me it is:
- to connect to some VPN through WIFI with our WM5 \ 6 device.
In my case- this is a public WIFI internet provider, which has a wifi coverage in the city.
Wifi is open PPTP. I need to type in a login \ pass on the web page I get, to start using the internet in current wifi session.
The ALTERNATIVE way to conect to internet - is to establish a VPN connection over the wifi.
I can successfully do in on the laptop.
With my UNI, WM5, AKU 3.5 - I can connect to VPN with the built-in VPN Client, but the first request to internet (via browser or Messaging send-receive) - drops my VPN connection, as it described here in the forum.
So: we need some software that can work.
I tried so far:
1. BlueFire VPN - just can't connect.
2. Antha VPN - just doesn't work.
I have heard thah on some other ROMs there is no problem with the built-in VPN client for PPTP, will try with some other WM6 ROMs later.
Any solution so far?
Thank you, kiwi992
Thanks to everybody!

Hi! The L2TP/IPSec is a special story.
It is widely discussed here at forum: xda-developers > General discussion > Networking >
Search for *VPN* string on this forum.
This is the: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302520&page=2&highlight=*VPN* one of the success stories.
You need to obtain the certificate from the system administrators of your network. You may also have some "magic" URL in your campus network, where you can download the required certificate. This URL should point to the inranet web page of the web interface of the VPN server.
If your goal is to securely connect to some specific computer on the network, you should use one of the VNC programs: the VNC server part on the computer, and the VNC client on your device.
In any case - first check your certificate \ settings on, say, Windows XP laptop, connected through WIFI, first, then continue with the device.
Good luck!
Dmitry
VPN problems
I don't know if this issue is specific to my device (pharos gps 600 gps phone), or to windows mobile 6 which I'm running.
I can't connect to my vpn through wifi, the reason being is that I cannot associate any connections through the wifi card with the vpn info.
Wifi card doesn't show as a selectable modem in the modem tab next to the vpn tab in the vpn config. Only modems are cellular line modems, bluetooth, and one "hayes compatible com1" which is my usb I would guess.
Does anybody know how I might get around this?

WM 6.5.3 and Native VPN......

Hi I recently signed up for a StrongVPN 3 Country deal to give me a stable VPN connection in China. I have set up all ok om my home PC and it works fine allowing access to sites otherwise blocked here.
Then i set up a VPN connection on my HTC Touch Diamond2 I can get the VPN to connect using either IPSec/L2TP or PPTP methods, however neither Tunnel seems to allow Internet access to either MS Explorer or Opera Mobile 10 or any other internet program.
In fact when i have established the VPN connection and then start my internet explorer or any other program which needs to access the internet then the VPN connection is dropped.
If I connect the VPN tunnel on the TD2 i can site there watching it for ages so it does not seem to be dropped after any specific time frame, only when I start an internet access program. for instance if i open my Hotmail account then the VPN connection stays until the point when i tap send and receive then it drops immediately and the hotmail account then synchronise mail via the standard wifi connection.
I also set-up my home PC to allow incoming connection and then set up another VPN connection on my TD2 to allow it to connect to my home PC. but whilst i can connect to my home PC i can not surf the internet using the VPN tunnel......I had thought that i might be able to start the StrongVPN connection on my homePC and then access it via the VPN connection from my TD2 to my HomePC but it does not seem to work that way.
My objective is to use my mobile phone to be able to surf social networking sites that are otherwise blocked by censorship.
Sorry for the long post but please could anyone with advise or experience at setting these two functions up on WM 6.5.3 please advise.
Well I think I may have found out the reason for the VPN connection to drop out....I needed to change my setting in CONNECTIONS and where before i selected my GPRS or EDGE service provider i now need to change that to "My Work Network" as this is where i set up the StrongVPN connection. now i have done this change to the settings the VPN connection does not drop out when any Internet program is started.
But I still can not access the blocked websites using StrongVPN on my WM device so I do not really know if it is using the VPN connection or not.....

StrongVPN Help desk advised me to input their DNS server settings in to the VPN account settings. I will try this when i get back to China in September. the DNS settings are found by edit the VPN account then next, next and select "Advanced" then scroll to "Servers" there you can select manaual server address and use the one that you VPN service provider recommend.
Let me know how you get on.
I have a similar problem here. I have setup the VPN in network connections but am still unable to surf blocked sites. The VPN worked fine on my PC. I have also changed the DNS setting for the VPN but no luck. But since there was no popup windows telling me whether it is connected or disconnected, how do I know the status of the VPN connection? Thanks!
to see if you are connected just tap on the top info bar then u should see your wifi connect and also your VPN connection. if you enable sound notification for connections in sounds then you will also get an audible connect and dissconnect to let u know. remember to set all your connection settings to "work connections" as i fount if not then when u open opera or other program that needs internet connection it will disconnect the VPN connection.
Thanks. I have tried that and the VPN was online. But opera was just couldn't open any page. Eighter the factbook tab in TouchFlo3D couldn't login. Any idea?
Have the same problem connecting to my home network - Remote Desktop works fine, until I open a browser on my HD2 - changing settings mentioned above didn't help...
Ok - it seems like I've managed to discontinue the connection drops to VPN.
Added wildcards to exceptions http://*.* and https://*.*
This way everything that tries to connect to internet connects via VPN. To stop that - in Work network setting select the same connection you use to connect to internet (Connections > Advanced > Select network)

I'm not sure what you mean by "added wild cards to exceptions"....what exceptions and where on your PDA did you add them?
As far as I was aware you are only able to set up a VPN connection in the "My Work Network" connections area. then to stop your VPN connection from being dropped by any application that access the Internet, you simply change your options to BOTH use "My Work Network" then the VPN connection is used for all applications.
However that said, I still cant access blocked sites using my VPN connection with StrongVPN in China. even after setting my Server DNS to that of StrongVPN it still does not work.
Anyone got any ideas why or how to access blocked content in China on their PDA??????
