I've recently got my g1 replaced with a htc hero and i love it in almost every way except for the dialer which i HATE!
Now maybe i'm being an idiot but i can't seem to stop my call button bringing up the dialer, I'd like to see my contacts, or groups or generally anything but that hideous dialer. I almost never call numbers not in my contacts. Can this be changed, or can i use something like acontacts - i don't really like it but it's a step in the right direction however installing it previously call asked me what i wanted to use and i can't work out what settings need cleared to let me change this. Many thanks
That pad is not only for dialing numbers, it works as a T9 contacts search by any part of name, surname, company, inicial, etc. - try it. I think that this very dialer is the best thing of the HTC Sense and the best thing that could have happened to Android.
Also try selecting a result with the trackball and then scrolling sideways, notice the numbers changing (if a contact has more than one).
If you are aware of this functionality and still want to change it, maybe somebody else will help.
I was not aware, but really i think it looks hideous. I'd rather not have it personally. It may look ok themed but... can you recommend a decent theme i can steal one from?
If you don't like the dialer just go into contacts instead and choose who you want to phone from there
peterc no offence intended but why would you even bother replying if you have nothing useful to say? I'm perfectly capable of using other applications or opening contacts directly my question related directly to the 'call' button.
I suggest you read your OP again. You asked (and I quote) "I'd like to see my contacts, or groups or generally anything but that hideous dialer. I almost never call numbers not in my contacts. Can this be changed"
And my answer is yes it can - don't use the dialer, access your contacts directly, and you can then call them directly from that app. I did not know from your question whether you were an experienced user or a first timer that had just got the phone did I? Many new users do not know many of the basic features of the phone, such as using the contacts app, and are looking for help.
But hey don't worry .... now I know that you are so knowledgable that you obviously don't need my help, I will not bother trying to help you in the future

Have you seen this part though?

Yes I did see that. And, referring specifically to the last part, if he (or she) goes into "People", he will see his contacts, and he can then list them in Groups, and he can phone any of those people without going into the "hideous" dialer. So I reckon my suggestion was valid for that bit too.
But at the end of the day if somebody has any better suggestions, which at the moment nobody appears to have, then I am happy for the OP to try those instead of my useless one.
peter i'm really not trying to pick a fight but what are you arguing about. My question was, as pauliusba understood related to having my 'call' button launch another application. Your suggestion was entirely unrelated to the call button.

Hi everybody,
I just moved from an iphone 3g (which i had jailbroken) to an incredible thanks to at&t contract finally finishing. Hv rooted the inc on my mac using the unrevoked method. Everything works fine (still have stock eclair 2.1 and sense running). Hv installed a bunch of apps from the market but hv not sideloaded anything yet or uninstalled anything (htc sense etc etc) yet. I would really appreciate some guidance from the community on the following since i am very new to the platform as a whole.
1. I dont want to lose the ability to update to the official froyo release (whenever it happens) so will I have to unroot (if thats even possible) to get the froyo update? If yes, whats the correct way so that I can bookmark that.
2. I want to be able to use the tethering without paying 20$ extra per month to VZ (in fact would probably use USB tethering to my macbook more often than wifi tethering/hotspot, but obviously I would like both! ). How should i do that? Obviously the stock app will just alert verizon, right? Is there another app that will work now that i hv rooted? Any special instructions to follow?
3. Would like to optimize the capability of the device by removing crapware and useless stuff which comes with the phone. Hv not yet even figured out what each app does yet. I will use my inc primarily for entertainment - games, social networking, browsing, streaming music, videos, google voice, true VoIP (not official VZ skype), GPS navigation, tethering (when no wifi) but will be OTA syncing my office exchange email account, contacts, calendar as well to make this a backup phone to my official bberry. Any suggestions on which apps to remove? Also how should I remove them without bricking the phone. Is there a cleaner method?
4. I actually like Sense even though it seems it uses up some memory - any way i can remove the useless parts of Sense (since I wont be using USB sync and I am sure some other stuff in sense is just bloatware) without losing the other features that look great - to be honest the phone looks too plain without sense (nexus 1 looked really naked). I would like to retain the look and feel of the sense ui.
5. How do I get swype on this? I played with it when i was shopping for android phones on the captivate (which unfortunately was on at&t) and I am amazed at how great that was! I badly badly badly badly need that!!
6. Any standard add-ons, apps which you would recommend for my intended usage?
7. Now that I am rooted which post-root apps should i install to make the inc more useful? Any obvious ones which you would recommend?
8. The people sense widget is just too much, anything a bit saner which is like a launchpad but without the screen wastage?
9. In jailbroken iphones, you could install lockinfo which was a spectacular agglomeration of all things (missed calls, voice mails waiting, email msg list, twitter feed, facebook feed, weather, calendar, tasks, sms msgs) in 1 simple scrollable screen. Anything similar in Sense/HTC widgets/App store? Just one glance would tell me everything.
Sorry, since I am new I decided to ask all questions in 1 shot. Obviously dont expect to have all questions answered by 1 person but if the devs/users can point me in the right direction, with links and some comments, I will greatly appreciate it.
Thanks and hoping to be a contributor to the android community sometime soon as I was in the iphone community until i just could not take at&t anymore.

No, if you are running the stock rom ou will recieve OTAs. The OTA doesn't magically detect "this phone is rooted."

doesnt somethong change the ctacerts and otacerts?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
No. it's also not suggested and is reported to have negative side effects.
One important thing, Install Rom Manager from the market.
With this app you can do a backup of the Rom (stock sense and rooted) you're running now and install others to try, if you don't like them just restore the one you had before and done, you can as many back up as you want.
Also check in the theme section and you'll find lots of themes to make your phone look and work beautiful, this also allows you to get to recovery without having to turnoff your phone and install anything you want from the sd card.
Also, if you don't like some of the crap ware that Sense has, there's a post for removing the apps you don't want on Sense and it tell you which ones are safe to remove.

Thanks! Just realized one more thing. I cant seem to be able to use skype over wifi only. Is this verizon's way of using up my minutes one way or another?
Hello. I'm actually quite surprised that I am unable to find more information about this. I hope someone can help shed light on this subject.
The short of it is that switching from an HTC Magic w. CM6.1 to a Nexus one with a bacon cooking, money printing CM7, I've lost the ability to select the email account colors.
I copied over the email.apk file from my magic and I've regained the ability to modify the email account colors but I'm still wanting to know where this information is stored in the system. The stock app auto selected colors - so it must be storing that information somewhere.
For whatever it's worth, I'm including the email.apk file form my Magic. I cannot recall the ROM, it was advertised as being very fast and light. I quite liked it. For whatever it's worth it's an CM6.1RC0 port by freeyo (Cronos?).
Also, but very slightly off topic, I'm looking to find where the email account settings are stored. I've got a few email addresses and it quickly becomes tiresome to re-input them whenever I try a different ROM. I suspect that the email account settings and the colors will be stored in roughly the same spot.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I don't know whether I'm more shocked to not have found any information about this quirk, or whether the lack of attention this has seen. Have I posted this in the wrong location? Is this a non-issue now [if so, please let me know why].
Thanks honz - I'm going to give this a go...
I had the same issue moving to a CM7 ROM... I tried using my old email.apk, but it didn't work for me...
Will try yours and fingers crossed!
EDIT: Worked... Thank you!!!
I finally upgraded from a RC of CM7 to 7.0.3 and was hoping of seeing this there. I've went out and continued looking for where this email.apk I had (posted above) came from. _Still_ no information. There is clearly modifications inside the .apk and there is an added "account_setup_color.xml" under /Email.apk/res/layout. I wonder how much hacking is required to transplant that over to the 'current'??!? email.apk as included with CM7.0.3.
Again, this is somewhat of a bump to hear if anyone knows about this anymore.
I rooted my glacier and installed hboot 085, so im not a noob, but my wife told me today that she lost all her texts non her unrooted stock glacier 2.2.1.
Nothing was recently installed, no out of memory, no crash or hang, just checked in the a.m. and a list of maybe 10-20 main contacts with a few hundred texts were down to just one recipient (me).
I researched hi and low for some thread to recover sms like on a pc (recovery software that scans the hard drive and gives you a list of what it can recover), and found nothing.
Any ideas? She had a few hundred, not a big number like 700-1000, but probably around 3-5 hundred.
Ideas? (not backed up with any sms backup, not rooted)
Thanks
if u go under settings in the native sms app, theres an option that says "delete old message".. maybe it was left checked.... thats the only possible reason i could think of
Rubbery. I assume that there's no "undelete" program or apk that can scan the flash on-board memory and find/ressurect lost or deleted files? Poor wife. She cooking up some nice italian food, I can smell the aromas now, need to help the poor girl out...

There was a thread in general about this same issue, just thought I'd reference that
thanks. it's correct - there's no check on any autodelete. im on the phone with the numbnuts autoattendant at t-mobile... "you'd like to move a number to t-mobile"? no. "you said yes, is that correct?"... lord, take me away now....
Hello there, I'd like some help please!
I have a Desire HD that I rooted with Visionary and Titanium Backup using an online guie, in order to get rid of annoying pre-loaded apps like Stocks and News & Weather.
I want to go back to basics, and set the phone up again with updated user details (email, etc), as if I'd just taken it out of the box, so it automatically syncs everything with my new accounts, emails, calendars, etc.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to update with the OFFICIAL HTC/Android 2.3, and keep the phone UNrooted from now on, so that I can update when prompted. How would I go about this? I know there are guides on the internet, but I'm fairly new to all this, and unfamiliar with terms like 'flash' and 'radio s-off'. Granted, I did root the phone myself, but that was using a step-by-step idiot's guide, and I'd like to reverse it in the same way.
Secondly, I'd like it of those annoying apps I deleted before didn't come back. Is there a way of doing this?
Thanks in advance for your help.
install a WWE RUU from here and you should be good to go, please do bear in min though that current firmwares are not rootable so you will not be able to go back once you have performed an OTA.
