Constructive Criticisms of the Nexus One? - Nexus One General

Let's get a list of good constructive criticisms of our phone.
Here's mine / the obvious:
Data connection sometimes swaps between 3G/EDGE by simply putting your hand on the lower end of the phone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2g5J4qPp54
Soft buttons are often difficult to trigger. It seems the activation point is actually above the white icons, rather than exactly centered on them.
Having to press the power button at the top to wake up from sleep. (Post#3)
What else is there?
Remember, be constructive

Serious question... what's the point of this thread?

3. Having to press the power button at the top to wake up from sleep.

A) Information for people who are thinking of purchasing this phone so they know exactly what they're getting into.
B) Potentially solve issues other people are having with workarounds they may not be aware of.
C) Maybe Google sees this thread and fixes some stuff? Is that too wishful thinking?

Display: subpixels are arranged in a sort of Bayer pattern, making it difficult to read smaller fonts comparing to traditional RGB-layout WVGA displays.

Paul22000 you should add all the criticisms into the first post for easy reading.

lol no i'm serious, click the first link, it provides a good explanation.
The point is that all displays consist of R-G-B pixels (three sub-pixels), and in Nexus there are only two subpixels. R-G, then B-G, then again R-G, etc..

I posted it on my UX blog. http://allancaeg.blogspot.com/2010/02/ux-of-android-os-buttons.html
It's about the flaws of the four buttons: back, menu, home, and search.

You should add that when you press and hold the menu button it will open the software keyboard.

Well im assuming hes talking about this recent update ERE36B. Cause im not sure if OP has rooted. hmmm
I am more concern about the touch screen problem. Not the Multitouch one, but the one about the touch screen goes crazzzy (seriously a phone that is operate completely by touch screen and the touch screen is not reliable??? what the heck is Google/HTC thinking?). That is the main thing that is keeping me from this phone.

I'd be curious to see the actual number of people suffering from this problem since so few people are complaining about it. Mine doesn't have this issue.
My screen goes crazy.
Every day or so ill turn the phone on where the top half of the screen wil be fine, but the bottom half will be out of calibration by about an inch. I'll feel the vibrate from the Buttons at the bottom when im clearly about an inch about them. Reboot fixes

i must be one of the few people who are lucky as well. I don't have the screen calibration error. Every blue moon the wrong spot will light up but i just have to press it again, no need to exit out of app or reset. I've only had my n1 for a 1 1/2 months, i was not one of the early adopters, if that means anything.
Also, no screen calibration issues. Hope the new OTA opens up the rest of the N1 Ram!

The only screen issue I have is when I am using the phone via BlueTooth and need to Mute the phone.. when I hit the Mute button, it presses the 0 button instead. I just have to hit power to turn off the screen for a few seconds and turn it on and it works as expected again.

Look like my comment fired up a storm. According to Google help forum, there are about 2000 posts, some are just back and fore, but even then it still come to a sizable #, most of them done like 4 -5 exchanges and still have the problem. I have 1 more month until I pull a trigger on this phone, hoping to see improvement.

I have issues with touchscreen stuff all the time. When I type fast I'll get all kinds of errors... I also have the issue when sometimes no matter where I click on the screen it only hits the home button... I really hope this gets cleared up.
Well I must have very bad luck because this is my second N1 with the problem.Return the first one 00 because the screen craziness and receive a new one 01 (different badge) and also has the problem. But I'm keeping this one, anyway is rooted already and notices is better way better, but the problem still here, but just ,put it to sleep and wake-up and fix it.I don't know the cause of this if software or hardware but definitely not everybody has it.I downloaded a drawing app from the market and I can see that when the problem I touch someplace near the middle of the screen and it recognized the touch as a straight line all the way to the bottom.

Woah! Capacitive Buttons!

Anyone notice that when you touch a capacitive button that the actual light turns off behind that single one? I'm running CM7 B25 Nightly- haven't tested it from stock. I just thought that this was awesome and also hard to notice. Or, eve, maybe my phone is junk and broken.

Does not happen on Stock, Bionix(curent ROM), CM7alpha2, or Modaco r3 as far as I remember. I can restore backups of each of those ROMs to confirm. Lights stay solid as can be.
However, if you like the "feature," I wouldn't consider the phone defective.
EDIT: I am wrong. They do, but it's exceptionally subtle and I had to jab the phone next to my eye to see it. Very cool, in retrospect.
they all do that... Nice touch to the phone I think. Little barely noticable things like that are neat....
I'm running the same build and mine do this as well; I think they probably did on stock firmware too. Kind of cool, but mostly goes unnoticed for obvious reasons.
If they can be controlled independently, than I think we have a prospect of notification LED's. These would work great.

OH SHI--it's very subtle. I just grabbed my phone and stuck it next to my eyeball to see the lights. You're right, they do go off for the splittest of second and you'd really have to be looking in order to see it.
Sorry @OP for misinforming.
Yes, they do this. This is also why they go black for upwards 10 seconds at a time on their own with the common phantom home/back button issue many are experiencing.
Mine are doing that. I'm stock.

Wow cool, just noticed it. Stock and root online.
Capacity buttons turning off per press is cool.
I also think one of the coolest things about the Nex S (and of Gingerbread) is the two finger slide show you can perform in the Gallery albums. Just place two fingers on any album and slide them apart. Neat effect.

That's a feature of stock Android 2.2 Gallery app. That was there on the Nexus One.
This is a cool feature. Like wesbalmer says, it could lead to replacing the NOLED app for notifications! If I hold any of these buttons the light also stays off until I let go.
Not many people will notice this feature coz when you press a capacitive button your finger covers it

This feature was already available on sgs froyo 2.2... Just noticed it now though!
yup, i can confirm that
but usually our fingers are way to big and wide to really notice the special effects
i had to use my tippy tip of my finger to be able to appreciate the effect, else i'd have missed it as every single hour i spend with the phone

No seriously, HTC One, fantastic device, everything is amazing, but again that power button on the top. Why? :crying: :crying: :crying:

Most of the custom Roms here allow for the volume buttons to wake up the phone. It's saving my finger stretching so much.

Holy crap, seriously? So a simple button remap should work? Anyone any idea how the button map files should be modified to make this work.. (Long time out of the low level customization business )
I like the button placement on the top left. Last year on the One X is was on the right side... That was a bit hard to reach.
They included the IR Blaster in the Power Button. That could be a reason why its on the top.

It could be, but you'd have a landscape remote. Power button placement should take precedence over a gimmicky feature most people won't use. I don't speak for everyone, but even as a geeky person, I'd rather reach for the remote than pull my phone out of my pocket, unlock it, and launch a remote control app to do the same thing.

Seriously? I've been wishing they'd do this for years. It's a universal (programmable) remote too so I can do my TV, Stereo (which I actually use a lot) and Roku box. It's a great feature.
Plus, if I'm sitting down, especially on a couch, I usually have already pulled my phone out of my pocket.

I wonder if the issue is really just hypothetical, as in the people who object don't have their One yet. I guess I'm lucky cause I had a Nokia and an iPhone before this so I've had the button on the top for several years. I'm concerned too about how tall the phone is but I have a case already and it isn't a problem to shift the phone slightly to get my finger up there (I have small hands).
That, the battery and the MicroSD card are non issues for me, but then I might be in the minority too. I've never been more excited to own or impressed with the design of a phone. In fact it's a little embarrassing how hard it is to wait two weeks.

It was still on the top in the one x, just the right side of the top compared to the left now. (it's always been top right iirc for htc and iphones) minus maybe small exception. I think right top is better for right handers... But as htc knows... Most people are left handed... /sarcasm this must be why they chose the left side now.

Actually, top left is better for right-handers because it allows you to fully stretch your finger, rather than cramping it in an awkward position if it's on the top right. But personally, if there was no IR Blaster, I would prefer it on the right side of the phone because it's so much easier and more natural to hit it with your thumb, with the way you hold a phone.

Yeah, that depends I guess on individual. Having owned htc phones and an ipod, and being right handed I prefer it be on the right side... So probably more about hand size. I've tried to hit the top left of my current phone as if it was the htc one to see the comfort... Doesn't work for me

Really? Okay great... Pretty long time ago that I have played with HTC devices. But anyway, this is the problem. I have root, can modify files in the system directory. But all those changes are undone when rebooting the devices, i.e. the changes are not permanent. Because the keymap files are loaded when booting the device there's really no way to change anything.
Anyone? Non permanent write access ?

[Request] iPhone X line at the bottom of the screen overlay

Hey there, I am not very knowledgeable on making overlays. I haven't seen this request quite yet nor have I found anything like it. Is it possible to make an overlay that will produce a line like the one at the bottom of the iPhone X screen?
What line? Can you post a picture of what you're referring to? Thanks.

But.. why? If you want it solely for cosmetic purposes you have weird desires but I hope someone can help you. If you want it to use gestures for home, recents and stuff there are already apps for that.

Because if its only for pure cosmetics that would hinder usability of the phone/ would decrease screen space and create a new opportunity for screen burn in. Other than that if it is a request for all the functionality it has on iphone X; I have nothing to add. The initial post wasn't clear about it as only statement was to acquire the line.
Edit: spelling

Not necessarily. People with big screens may find fixed search bar at the bottom useful. It has a purpose other that just being a cosmetic thing.

Again that search bar has a purpose other than just being cosmetic and if you are into that kind of stuff you can achieve its convenience by taking the risk of screen burn-in. Same goes for op's request but as I said earlier risking burn in for just cosmetics is weird to me. Still, I don't judge and hope he/she can find something related to the request.

You are right. And I know there are a lot of people thinking same as you. My point was just about that line being more of a hindrance when it is just for looks and can get pretty boring and risky in time. But if it had the same function as iphone X even I may have installed it. Again I hope this question finds an answer.

Power button too high

I came from a Pixel 3xl. This is my first Samsung device. Is anyone else taking inadvertent screen shots all the time? I am do to where the power button is located vs the vol down button.
You have many alternatives dude
You can enable screenshot gesture
You can use application one hand operation+ by Samsung and assign taking a screen shoot with certain gesture
Also you can assign screen off with certain gesture to avoid using the power button

The button is indeed too high and if you try to press it while the phone is on a desk there's a high chance you will press the volume up button and screenshot your lock screen, annoying issue that shouldn't exist in the next models.

Would you buy a product and silently accept its inconvenience , not buy it because of its silly problems, or just share the complaint hoping it serves a purpose?
Without the third option there won't be an improvement, this kind of drama about minor inconveniences is useful to raise awareness and hope for changes or solutions(like remapping screenshots), there's a ton of hella stupid threads here but this is not one of them.

Without the third option there won't be an improvement, this kind of drama about minor inconveniences is useful to raise awareness and hope for changes or solutions(like remapping screenshots), there's a ton of hella stupid threads here but this is not one of them.

I literally have no issue at all, with where the power button is. Maybe because I have big hands. But if I did have a problem with it, chances are I wouldn't have bought it myself. But even if I did have an issue with it and bought it, it's pointless to complain about it because it's a problem that can't be fixed. True, Samsung might listen in consideration for the next model, but then again maybe not, because not everybody using this phone has lil baby hands either. So in essence, complaining about the power button placement, ESPECIALLY since you knew where the buttons were before you bought it is just whining, nothing more. It's not a "problem" people didn't know about before buying it like the VOIP bugs that were fixed in the recent update.

The bigger your hands are the harder it is for you to avoid the volume buttons when taking a pressure point to press the power button, it's not about having baby hands.

No dude... Just... No. Like I said I have big hands and literally have no problems with ANY of the phone buttons. I've never accidentally taken a screenshot pressing the power button. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. Especially since in my opinion this power button placement "problem" isn't even a problem, and it's one that won't ever be resolved (for this model).
The guy wasn't even complaining, he was asking if anyone else was having the problem of taking accidental screen shots. And it's not something your going to think of until you buy the phone and then it starts happening. Your input about the thread being "dumb" got even "dumber" once you replied.

The name of the thread is literally "Power button too high"....but he wasn't complaining, really...
Anyway, I won't hijack the thread anymore with my complaint, about everyone else's power button complaints. You guys can have this one and I'll gladly bow out since really there is nothing to offer to it anyway.
