Anyone notice that when you touch a capacitive button that the actual light turns off behind that single one? I'm running CM7 B25 Nightly- haven't tested it from stock. I just thought that this was awesome and also hard to notice. Or, eve, maybe my phone is junk and broken.

Does not happen on Stock, Bionix(curent ROM), CM7alpha2, or Modaco r3 as far as I remember. I can restore backups of each of those ROMs to confirm. Lights stay solid as can be.
However, if you like the "feature," I wouldn't consider the phone defective.
EDIT: I am wrong. They do, but it's exceptionally subtle and I had to jab the phone next to my eye to see it. Very cool, in retrospect.
they all do that... Nice touch to the phone I think. Little barely noticable things like that are neat....
I'm running the same build and mine do this as well; I think they probably did on stock firmware too. Kind of cool, but mostly goes unnoticed for obvious reasons.
If they can be controlled independently, than I think we have a prospect of notification LED's. These would work great.

I've run stock since the day I bought it, and on my phone the capacitative buttons have always responded to a press by shutting off the light behind the button activated.

OH SHI--it's very subtle. I just grabbed my phone and stuck it next to my eyeball to see the lights. You're right, they do go off for the splittest of second and you'd really have to be looking in order to see it.
Sorry @OP for misinforming.
Yes, they do this. This is also why they go black for upwards 10 seconds at a time on their own with the common phantom home/back button issue many are experiencing.
Mine are doing that. I'm stock.

Wow cool, just noticed it. Stock and root online.
Capacity buttons turning off per press is cool.
I also think one of the coolest things about the Nex S (and of Gingerbread) is the two finger slide show you can perform in the Gallery albums. Just place two fingers on any album and slide them apart. Neat effect.

That's a feature of stock Android 2.2 Gallery app. That was there on the Nexus One.
This is a cool feature. Like wesbalmer says, it could lead to replacing the NOLED app for notifications! If I hold any of these buttons the light also stays off until I let go.
Not many people will notice this feature coz when you press a capacitive button your finger covers it

Human 2.0; now with transparent fingers!
This feature was already available on sgs froyo 2.2... Just noticed it now though!
yup, i can confirm that
but usually our fingers are way to big and wide to really notice the special effects
i had to use my tippy tip of my finger to be able to appreciate the effect, else i'd have missed it as every single hour i spend with the phone

now, lets wait for the BLN..
maybe home for missed call, back for email, etc etc flashing.
this will be way more cooler than the track ball (if only if it has colors as well).
then we might be able to even do like knight rider style.

Well im assuming hes talking about this recent update ERE36B. Cause im not sure if OP has rooted. hmmm
I am more concern about the touch screen problem. Not the Multitouch one, but the one about the touch screen goes crazzzy (seriously a phone that is operate completely by touch screen and the touch screen is not reliable??? what the heck is Google/HTC thinking?). That is the main thing that is keeping me from this phone.

I'd be curious to see the actual number of people suffering from this problem since so few people are complaining about it. Mine doesn't have this issue.
My screen goes crazy.
Every day or so ill turn the phone on where the top half of the screen wil be fine, but the bottom half will be out of calibration by about an inch. I'll feel the vibrate from the Buttons at the bottom when im clearly about an inch about them. Reboot fixes

i must be one of the few people who are lucky as well. I don't have the screen calibration error. Every blue moon the wrong spot will light up but i just have to press it again, no need to exit out of app or reset. I've only had my n1 for a 1 1/2 months, i was not one of the early adopters, if that means anything.
Also, no screen calibration issues. Hope the new OTA opens up the rest of the N1 Ram!

Get your palms off the side of the screen and it'll work fine.

The only screen issue I have is when I am using the phone via BlueTooth and need to Mute the phone.. when I hit the Mute button, it presses the 0 button instead. I just have to hit power to turn off the screen for a few seconds and turn it on and it works as expected again.

Look like my comment fired up a storm. According to Google help forum, there are about 2000 posts, some are just back and fore, but even then it still come to a sizable #, most of them done like 4 -5 exchanges and still have the problem. I have 1 more month until I pull a trigger on this phone, hoping to see improvement.

I have issues with touchscreen stuff all the time. When I type fast I'll get all kinds of errors... I also have the issue when sometimes no matter where I click on the screen it only hits the home button... I really hope this gets cleared up.
Well I must have very bad luck because this is my second N1 with the problem.Return the first one 00 because the screen craziness and receive a new one 01 (different badge) and also has the problem. But I'm keeping this one, anyway is rooted already and notices is better way better, but the problem still here, but just ,put it to sleep and wake-up and fix it.I don't know the cause of this if software or hardware but definitely not everybody has it.I downloaded a drawing app from the market and I can see that when the problem I touch someplace near the middle of the screen and it recognized the touch as a straight line all the way to the bottom.

And I always make sure I'm not making contact with the screen with the palm or anything else.
Has anyone else experienced their cursor randomly moving around while trying to type or pages scrolling while they're trying to read? My G2 has been doing this fairly frequently and I can send it back but I'm somewhat afraid to since mine does not have the hinge issue and (so far) has pretty damn good battery life. I don't want to just swap one problem for two more
It happened to me once, but I have yet to see it happen again. Strange though.

You have the Desire Z?
Mine does the same thing with the cursor. Makes it very difficult to type a lot of the time. The only thing I can think of is maybe it's a lighting condition... maybe light reflects on the trackpad a certain way that makes it think your finger has moved over it.
I hope there's a way to fix it!
Im curious, are you folks charging when youre having these issues? i had the problem temporarily when i first got the phone so i unplugged the usb cable and havent had it since.
no mystery here guys. it's changing light conditions that are affecting the optical pad. it's the same notion as an optical mouse, if the light doesn't reflect back right it can go all over the place. try finding someplace with a strong overhead light and angling the g2 back and forth and you'll see it activate the pad. that's how it works, light not touch.
Had the same problem, only when charging tho.

I think you are correct...the desk at work has spot where light can come through...when I have my phone laying flat the screen starts to go crazy!!, I was like wtf. It ONLY does it in this spot,no where else...I guess that explains everything

Yes, I'm definitely having this issue. I started a thread a while ago about it. I took a video of it happening, too.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=799435
I have track lighting in my apartment, and that's what I think is triggering it. Mine's not as bad as the rest of yours seem to be. It very rarely "goes all over the place" for me. It just highlights random buttons once in a while. I can see how if it activates during typing that it would be a huge pain in the ass.
Stupid optical trackpad... was was wrong with a track ball? I never had a problem with my G1's trackball. Doesn't HTC test these things?
Yup, that explains it. That was my suspicion. Especially since when using Swype (where my hand covers light going to the trackpad) it never does it. It's never been while charging, though - not specifically, at least.
Try holding it towards a light and wave it around. You'll see the cursor jump around. Makes sense. Kind of annoying, but at least it's not a defect.

I actually had to stop using swype because it would happen EVERY time I tried to write in portrait mode
Strange, but it could just be the difference of how we hold our hands or something to that effect. I think the lighting thing does explain it, though.

That was my thought as well, T-Mobile should include a "how to hold" guide in the box
This happens to me whenever I try to use the phone when I'm sitting on the couch with my back to the window. Only place it happens.
Called T-Mobile a few days ago about this and the hinge issue and they immediately issued me a replacement. Probably won't be any better but worth a try right? And if it keeps giving me problems then I'll keep exchanging it until the Nexus Two comes out lol
Not sure If anyones ever seen it done or if its even possible, but I was driving my payloader at work and had an odd thought. I think it'd be cool to have a lockscreen that you had to pinch two icons on edges of the screen to the middle or even the opposite could work, a button in the middle you split apart to unlock. Even a sense like mod where you put a finger on each side of the clock and pull down. Sure its unnecessary and not practical, seeing as one slider and a power button keep my phone off just fine. Still, te way I imagine it in my head it could be done in a cool way. Just a random thought, not sure if anyones ever tried it, or if its already out, but does anyone else think this would be neat? I would work on it!

Don't see why not. The epic can detect up to 5 different points of contact. Hell you could make it unlock like the Xoom commercial where the dude has his 5 fingers moving a circular gear.

i'm on streakdroid 1.9.0 and i love it, but would love to have the three touch capacative buttons to be always lit up while the screen is awake. can anyone help?
several people have asked this question, myself included, and the answer seems to be...nothing. I was told that it was that way to conserve battery, and "you'll get used to it"...and in some small way I've learned to tolerate it this long, but I still don't like it. I'm planning on flashing to a different rom because I believe that's the only solution.
Someone did suggest an app called AdjBrightness or something like that, but it did not work for me, or the fellow it was suggested to.

I disagree - I never notice that they're turned off anymore. And I think the screen is prettier without the lighted buttons drawing attention to themselves.

It was annoying for me at first as well, but after using the device for a while I'm used to it. I hit the appropriate button on the first try nearly every time. Since there are only three buttons you can generously put a lot of your thumb/finger onto one of three large areas.

I returned my previous nexus 7 with many problems there were touch issues, freezes, and udid not matching issues and I had to literally reset my tablet 10 times...even on the stock ROM there were issues..but this time I decided not to root it after getting an exchanged device ...everything seems to be good except the power button is lopsided....like one side sticks out while the other is almost level with the tablet and I also noted that the front facing camera isn't center...but with both problems the camera and button still works...do you guys think that the power button may stop working eventually? Everything else is fine with the device so I'm hesitant to exchange it again

I don't agree.
The buttons on all of my N7s have been different, the current one I have is solid and clicky and definitely not lopsided. If it's not aligned properly inside the case there's definitely a chance the ribbon cable will be sitting and bent in a position it wasn't meant to be in, causing it to fail prematurely. That's not OCD, that's simply poor manufacturing.
To the OP, I don't recommend exchanging it if everything else about your unit is good considering getting a good one right now is a crapshoot. I haven't looked closely at how accessible the buttons are when the back cover is removed, but one option would be to open it and see if you can fit the alignment or see if the buttons themselves are physically warped.
Regardless of what you do, I would suggest RMAing it at some point before your warranty is up.

If my button was weird I'd return it also. But I figured that would be a "no brainer".
I didn't mean to start a fight haha thanks for the input guys....the button does work fine but I just hope the other side doesn't get flushed to the point where I can't press it either lol that's what I was mainly worried about
I've tried a few units where the buttons were perfect, just sticking out and with the solid click. It feels very nice, but it totally isn't worth trying to playing return roulette for the buttons given the even worse things that could be wrong with the replacement. They are remarkably rare. Most of the ones I've seen have the mushy buttons, often with one side more flush than the other (they aren't supposed to be flush)
You'll eventually get a case with a magnetic on/off and won't even notice the power button anymore.
