Hello all,
I've started this thread to serve as a repository for information on the HTC HD2 model variant "T9193", the 850Mhz 3G-equipped version sold by Telstra in Australia. On a general level, most discussions applying to the regular HD2 are still relevant, however the T9193 has its own set of questions, hopefully answews to which can be tracked in here.
If there are any more sections of information people find useful it may be added at a later time. So let's get started-
What is it?
Model: HTC T9193
Available on the Telstra network in Australia
http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/phones/phone_details.cfm?phone=HD2
Why should I buy this model?
If you are on a network that uses 850MHz frequency for its 3G bands (AT&T, Rogers, Telstra, etc), the HD2 T8585 will not give you full 3G reception, as this phone operates on 900MHz.
Where can I buy it?
There are a few e-tailers currently shipping the T9193. Here are the ones we have so far; if you've found it in-stock elsewhere let me know so I can add it to the list.
Australian sellers:
Telstra http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/phones/phone_details.cfm?phone=HD2 (some members report they will only ship overseas if you call them directly)
Personal Digital http://personaldigital.com.au/p380/...NEXTG-850Mhz-AT&T-Roger-&-Telecom-NZ/buy.html (ships overseas, 1-3 day shipping available)
Mobicity http://www.mobicity.com.au/htc-hd2-next-g.html Member 'agoattamer' purchased his unit from this site, so for specific questions on their service you might contact him
North American sellers:
Negri Electronics http://www.negrielectronics.com/touch-t9193-smartphone-unlocked-p-3108.html
What's in the box?
Box contents for Telstra-branded phones are:
HD2 T9193
Leather slip case
USB cable (approx. 3')
Australian wall charger
16GB microSD card
Stereo headphones
Is the phone SIM locked?
Most users (myself included) have reported that the phone does NOT need to be SIM unlocked - any GSM SIM should work in the device.
Is the phone physically branded?
There are two very small logos on the back lower half of the phone, on the soft-touch material. The color is gray, and isn't too noticeable
Can I flash a different ROM?
Yes, however HardSPL must be applied first.
Read this thread (very carefully!).
Official ROMs from HTC are available here; click the 'shared folder' link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=577717
Can I download the original Telstra ROM?
The original stock ROM from Telstra (with all Telstra bloatware/customizations) is available here:
http://htcpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1474
Can I flash a different Radio version?
Other users have reported flashing to other radio versions without losing 850MHz reception. Note that depending on the ROM/Radio you may lose the option for manually selecting 850MHz from the dropdown list under Phone settings.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611787
Can I customize the three Quicklinks on the Home screen without flashing a new ROM?
Yes, see this thread for a cab file that unlocks customization for the quicklinks:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5452464&postcount=1
Are there any hardware issues related to this model variant?
Pink Hue
With the T8585 there have been widespread reports of a pink hue in the center of camera images. They attempted to remediate this through a software patch, however the issue persisted if a few tweaks were applied to the camera settings, indicating this could be a hardware fault.
There have been no reports of pink hue from T9193 users yet.
White Paint on Hardware Buttons inconsistently applied, results in uneven lighting
A few users have reported having this issue

How do I remove that stubborn battery cover?
Pocketnow.com has posted a video explaining an easier method for removing the very tight battery cover (that's a good thing though!) without breaking a fingernail:

{reserved}
Hey I have the t9193 and the camera appears to be just fine. The chassis build on this model is real tight. We won't be removing this battery cover as easily as the HD, but you also gain better fit metal cover which doesn't squeek like the plastic ones did on HD.
Actually, here's a good way to easily remove the battery - works very well for me!

I have just received my T9193. My camera dosent have the pink tint either. Only problem i have is data connection occasionaly stops working and i need to reset. Hopefully we can find a solution soon. When 3g is working the data connection is pretty quick.

I'm actually having the very same issue. There's an open thread about this but no solution from anyone... what ROM and radio are you running? Are you still on the stock Telstra ROM? I flashed to 1.66 WWE.

I have the 9193 and get this on a variety of ROMs. I am usually able to fix the data connection by terminating the data connection on the quick menu, which is quicker than a reset."

+1 on your comment. I don't notice it. It actually sucks when you use this for Biz and don't notice that you have no emails.
I wish there was a fix for this. I just disable the Sense from tonight and want to see if I notice any changes in anything.

I have this issue, but you don't have to reset [the phone], just go to the Comm Manager and toggle "Phone" off and then back on.
Since this is the 'official' reference thread:
I have NOT had this issue. I saw it once and I'm pretty sure it was a network problem in that area - I switched to EDGE and all was well.
I typically run the latest radios/6.5.x roms, currently R2.08.50.05 w/ Artemis 3.7. I do a mtty format between flashes just to be sure I'm starting from a clean slate.
I have an exchange account that has push email enabled around the clock and I've never noticed any delivery delays.
Just a thought: iPhone users are known for being vocal complainers against the ATT network. Could there be some truth to their allegations, and you guys are just seeing it as well?
Hey looking to pick one of these up to use in new york on att. Had iphones since they came out. Will be my first wm phone. Hoping they release wm7 for the hd2 real soon . Can yoi guys tell me where you purchased yours from. Trying to gauge whag other people are paying because the 8585 are going for around 600 on ebay now
well I got mine today and have not found any issues yet camera seems fine actually very impressed data speed seems very fast.. no loss of connection but then I've only started using it
I am using the asia wwe 1.66 rom with stock telstra radio. The telstra rom had so much bloatware i couldnt stand it.
My data connection stopped working last night while i was sleeping. I woke up and received the connection error again, i was connected to my home wifi !! Toogling the airplane mode on and off does fix this, but its very annoying.
Secondly, I was an iphone user before the hd2. AT&T in western NY is pretty good, i rarely drop calls. Around my area I constantly have the big "H". MMS and SMS work well. Only problem is when the data connection quits for no reason.
Has anyone had better luck with the 2.2 rom for tmobile us?

See the links in the first post of this thread.
The lowest price ive seen is from Personal Digital in Australia; I paid 780 USD shipped to the US. There are some on ebay too (the T9193 specifically - just make sure you're looking at the right one!), but they are in the 900 range.
PersonalDigital is the way to go. You won't find it cheaper since everyone else is making a killer overhead on it! I saw one place in the US selling it for $1k+
After flashing a new rom I have tried to run the hotfix that fixes the sd card issue, but it tells me the hotfix is not compatible with my phone. Im guessing maybe because the hardware changes from T9193 to T8585 in the hardware info when flashing ROMS. I downloaded the U.S. hotfix because I am in the U.S.but may I need to download AU version since my T9193 obviously came from Australia?
Which ROM did you flash?
I think all of the patches ONLY apply to ROMs less than version 1.66. Starting at 1.66 the hotfixes were rolled into the ROM update.
HD2 Telstra T9193 experience (Argentina)
Hi , i'd like to report my experience with my recently received HD2 T9193 from Telstra (Australia). I am from Buenos Aires, Argentina (same 3G american bands as AT&T, UMTS 850/1900)
I guarantee that flashing custom ROMs AND various Radios available in XDA work perfectly . Even those ROMs which, being cooked with original HD2 packages, display '1900/2100' UMTS bands, in Comm Manager, when you lock to 'only WCDMA', it uses actual hardware UMTS bands, hard-coded on chip.
Also, i don't suffer from any noticeable issue up to know, either aesthetically on the phone, or on hardware (like the so mentioned 'pink' in camera, data connection crashes, etc).
Phone just feels flawless, identical to original HD2, but with american 3G UMTS bands....
And BTW 3G speeds are incredibly good, but probably what surprised me the most, are the blazingly fast EDGE speeds! by far the speedest edge phone i put my hands on... really makes a difference...

I was also thinking that but being that my sd card has displayed the same number of capacity since day one means that It hasnt been applied. So im looking for an answer that could help me get this solved because its quite annoying. I have read and heard that it mostly applies to 8gb and 16gb and Im using the 16gb from Telstra

I would like to hear if any T9193 users have tried the Tmo US roms? Does anyone know if those ROMs include a radio, and how that radio works with the T9193?
Related
I've searched through the forums but can't find anyone asking this and I'm curious. After trying out a lot of different cooked ROM's using USPL and tweaking/testing/sampling what's around I'm getting very confident about tweaking my HD thanks now to this 5-star community and site!
I'm still unclear about what advantages/dangers are there to upgrading your radio version? I totally respect the usual dangers of bricking your device during a rom/software upgrade and all the usual banter surrounding tweaking a device, but wondering specifically why someone would want to upgrade their radio? Is it dependent on your carrier and country of region/usage? What should you be aware of or should you only ever upgrade radio version under very specific situations?
I'm running radio 1.13.25.24 in Australia using Telstra on unlocked HD.
Thanks!

We Update Radios for Better reception.. signal and etc improve of the Conection and things like this.
So for me.. you know that the Touch HD have a few second delay when someone calling you...
WHen i flash my RADIO with thelatest one 1.17 and also install a RILHONE 1.14 the phone start to respond without any delay.. also the improvment of signal was cool in some place that befor i have 1 bar signal now i have 3 or more.. the Wi Fi is a bit faster and etc
Also the GPS can improve depends...
So the Radio only by himself can`t do the same for everyone also depends from the ROM you useing and from the Mobile Operator
Like you can see im from Bulgaria and for me the Radio 1.17 with 1.14 Rilphone is the best combination but for you can be diferent....
Anyway the NEW Radio is made to Improve, if we don`t have what to improve there we will not need form a new Radio and HTC will not make a new Radios this that they make new Radios mean that.. still have what to be improved.
This is not only with the RADIOS always when have some UPDATE no matter for your Desktop PC or your Phone or whatever the Update = Improve, of course not all the time the NEW = BETTER and bugs FREE but this is the idea
I've been wondering bout this very same question as well; have been flashing and modding for a while now (aprox 4-5 monthes) and this was goning to be my next port of call. I'm from Oz also but am on the optus network, did you buy the legit next G network telstra HD (T 8285), or just the standard T 8282 ....??
Well I decided to give it a go and upgraded last night to the latest 1.17.25.09 so will post back here with results. It certainly is a very easy and quick process once you understand the USPL process and have already stuffed around with custom ROMs.

I bought a standard unlocked stock T8282 from some Aussie online store (which means it would have come straight from Hong Kong), paid little extra for extended warranty (recommended). Dunno what you mean by 'legit' lol...I'm strongly against the big telcos and the scams they pull making people pay more for a device that has limited functionality and usually locked down and defecated with their corporate logos and ****e. When you want a device, you buy the device. A telco is a service provider of a network service, not a hardware supplier or software house or device tweaker. If you cant afford the device, put it on a credit card and pay a bank off instead of a telco and just get a pre-paid account. In AUS the telcos try and charge unaware peeps $70 and more just to unkock a phone they have locked themselves. Those 'plans' end up costing people over $2000 after 2 years...stoopid. End rant...
I am almost certain I am the very first in the entire country to have the Telstra Version of the hd2 with incredibly fast 3g on AT&T 3G HSDPA and this thing is like a rocket ship. Will post photos shortly and received at 8:30 a.m. C.S.T. Thanks, Kevin

No, I have a good friend in Australia who I met on eBay when I also purchased the Touch HD T8285 who was nice enough to pick this up for me last week and even before they went on sale. JB HIFI had them a limited amount on sale at their stores and Serkan my friend literally got me the last one available in the entire country this past Friday. Would have had yesterday but custom's held it for 24 hrs.
Are you using the Telstra ROM or did you hardspl and put another ROM on? Also, if you are using the Telstra ROM, what does it come with and does it limit you on at&t? In other words, does it have the youtube app and does it work properly and does the MMS for at&t work along with IE & Opera browers? Wondering if there is a proxy issue or not with Telstra ROM. Congrats on the HD2 on at&t. I will have mine on Friday!
I'm a Canadian -- Telus customer -- and I'll be tacking up this honour on the Canadian side on Saturday when I return from vacation with my freshly-purchased Telstra HTC HD2 in-hand.

I had some sort of issue using the Telstra ROM for data on Vodafone AU (I have a pre-paid SIM with them while I'm down here).
Once I HSPL'd and flashed a custom ROM (highly recommended!) it was fine.
Interesting: The box the phone came in says "T9193" but the device identifies to ActiveSync as "T8585".
Mine will be here friday morning FEDX....
friday night will be flashing a new rom.
cant wait.

I am quite busy today yet will promise to answer all questions and post many photos this evening. fyi, the reason active sync says t8585 is because it will only say t9193 if you have the telstra rom on there otherwise once hspled and flash a new rom it changes. Odd. 2. mine is already hspled with the best rom for this device in my humble opinion dutty's. his roms are always the fastest, close to the htc stock rom's without alot of unnecessary apps, and most consistent out there. kevin

Can't wait your photos and impressions. Can you tell me about this:
1-How is the speed in 3G, can you measure it?
2-ROM version (original from Telstra and witch is the one you flashed)
3-What you can't do that you should do
4-SMS delay
5-Did your phone detect the AT&T network in the moment you turn it on with the AT&T sim?
6-Anything else that you consider important
Also, where I can find the best tutorial to flash an HD2, something made for "Dummies"
Thanks

Photos forthcoming and apologies again to all for no update last night:
1. SMS AND MMS works just fine but you must have the telstra radio 2.61 installed or it does not work at all. No lag whatsoever.
2. Telstra ROM appeared from only having it on my device for like 30 minutes to have all the features that the uk version had which I also owned from day one till this past weekend.
3. Telstra ROM like with the touch hd t8285 is completely unusable in that you can't do anything with it like say internet for everything is configured for that network and the internet settings cannot be changed or hacked. Yes, it detected my at&t sim immediately and the big H showed up on the phone.

Well the T-Mobile version has weird UMTS bands, so unless you're on T-Mobile it'll be useless to you.
Currently using TP2/Tilt 2 and just got an itch to try an on-screen keyboard with a larger screen so I bought a Telstra branded HD2 T9193. Been on the TP2 board for a while.
Anticipating its arrival I will begin perusing the threads here to find the most efficient ways to make it work as desired on the ATT network here in So. Fla. I have already subscribed to a few threads but if anyone has specific suggestions feel welcome to post them or PM me.
Ultimately, I'll run the Android 2.2 side by side on the WinMo.
David
as far as roms, radios, tweaks, apps, reg edits etc etc, anything that applies to regular hd2 applies to telstra, with the exception of HSPL. You can't use hspl2, only hspl1 (probably requires finding an old telstra rom and flashing from sd card) or hspl3.
So, don't worry about the tmous talk about the wrong radio killing your phone, it doesn't apply to you.

LOL. Good to know. I have faith in myself but I am just as able to screw something up as anyone else!
I´ll really love to have one of those (i have T-Mobile´s version), my provider runs his 3G network on the 850, so T-Mo is no good for that, and if i buy one from Telstra the price goes up to 200% of what i have paid for mine ($460-ish US dollars), good luck with your phone.
SLDS.
OK I have done some searching around on this topic and I'm finding a lot of mixed information. I'm currently on the Rogers network here in Canada and I managed to get my hands on an HD2 for next to nothing. So I jumped on the chance to have a "boot whatever the heck you want phone". However, while initially researching the phone I only quickly looked over the supported frequencies for the phone to ensure that I could use in on Rogers. Of course it will work as a phone just fine, however, it will not support 3g....apparently.
Started searching about for a way to change the phones frequency and some are saying it is possible to flash another radio for say the European version and some are saying that's not possible. I'm inclined to think it is not possible and that it is a hardware limitation. I figure that this is the best place to look for some real answers. Anyone have some insight into this matter? Oh and if it is a hardware issue and it can be changed....I'm not afraid to take the whole phone apart to try it. Ive done my share of tear downs on other phones....just for the heck of it.
Thanks in advance
only the telstra model will give you 3g on rogers.
hardware, and not changeable
yes you can change the radio (if youhave a tmous ((t mobile us)) then you need to be REAL careful which radio you flash) but changing radio has no effect on the bands.
this forum is for the regular hd2, the tmous (if that's what you have) can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=631
If you have the T-Mobile US version then you can use it on Wind Mobile here in Canada. This is what I'm doing and everything works great, including the 3g. I've loaded Android on it and I absolutely love my HD2!
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I actually bought a Telstra (Montreal Fido user) because we don't have Wind here... Telstra works great. Got it off ebay from a nice aussie fellow. I wanted the Tmous one for the extra ROM space, but hey... As long as Android runs on it, I'm more than happy!
Welcome to the HD2 community.
In a nutshell, would a Tmobile US HD2 work in the UK under the virgin network?
I've been looking at the frequency that virgin's running at and the supported list for the T9193, and I just want to confirm that it should work before I buy it.
Oh, and does the US version come with the AUO Display by any chance?
It will of course need to be unlocked/sim free and to get the hsdpa/3G connection will need to support that.
As you have done some of the homework I expect by now you'll know

I won't need to because most of the ones I've found on sale are already unlocked, so this would work?
I've always wanted to know,,, since the tmous network uses aws, meaning it uses both it's available utms bands, 1700 and 2100, one for up, one for down, and everyone else uses one band for both, 2100 in this case, is the tmous radio hardware capable of using one band for both?
(Also, wasn't clear from your post, but you know the t9193 is the telstra model, not tmous, right?)

Actually, I didn't, I just assumed T9193 was the US version.
Hehe, lucky you didn't impulse buy then eh?
There would be no benefit in bringing a t9193 to the UK, since it is identical to the regular hd2( commonly called the t8585, but see below) with the exception of the 850/2100 bands instead of 900/2100, and a tiny amount of case branding.
The tmous appears to carry the same t8585 designation as the regular hd2, although it never seems to be referenced as such anywhere, and Googling t8585 always brings up the regular, never the tmous.

Yes, very lucky
As for why I want it, there's a lower chance of having wake up lag, and it has 1gb rom, that's all. So if possible I'd like to have this.
Again, not sure from your post which one you mean by "why I want it", though I shall assume you mean the tmous because the t9193 does NOT have 1gb rom.(as for less chance of wake-up lag,,,, hmmm, I'd take that little nugget of info with a large pinch of salt. I've been here daily for 18 months and seen absolutely NO evidence pointing to that being true, ((and indeed you are the first person I've seen saying it)))
your research now would be aimed at finding out for sure if a phone designed for aws can be used on non aws networks. I suspect it will but I for one certainly wouldn't buy until I knew for definite.

Sorry for nt being clear, but I meant the tmous, and I just think there's a better chance of it not having wake up lag, and also having an AUO display.
I got the Tmous version & have used it in UK on Vadaphone & T-Mobile, had 3G connection but didn't give it the best of tests as was only in town for a day.
I expect it will be fine as worked perfect on european networks using 2 bands (1up, 1down).
Wil be in UK next month so will test it fully.

Ty a lot, that's all I needed, virgin is a virtual network using Tmobile, so if it works on that, then it should work fine
no problem, Tmous is the beast & the later built models have revised motherboard & new screen supplier so quality/reliability is better.
Tmob bashed HTC over high unit returns & was the only thing that pushed HTC to do a sneaky revision model.
I run mine on Energy ROM & it is superb, works great in all countries & scenarios I have encountered so far.
1200Mah battery is only real big issue as on 3g HSPDA ect it uses a lot of power compared to GSM Edge.

Sounds great, I'd been thinking of jumping on the dual core bandwagon, but the cost has been holding me back, and this piece of news makes me feel better.

Yeah you are right T-Mobile had a huge percentage of HD2 returns and exchanges. Heck even I myself had a replacement HD2 sent to me as my first one had gotten where it would take me up to ten resets to getcit to boot past the orange Windows screen. But most of the returns in my opinion were because people were use to iPhones and Android devices not Windows Mobile. And as we all know Windows Mobile is not for everybody, especially te stock Win Mo ROMs. I myself hated my HD2 the first month I had it as it was my first smartphone cause it would freeze up, close applications on it's own, turn off on it's own (sometimes), get stuck on boot up everytime I had to turn it off then back own, and took forever to load a web page. But when I flash the official update almost all of that cleared up except the damn sticking at bootup. Not long after I flashed the update (my very first flash ) I found XDA and my HD2 became a prized possession. I have not ever so much as seen are touched a EU HD2 and I know they are probably justcas good as a TMOUS HD2, after all Cottula's HD2 is a EU lol. But just to give you some more personal feed back. My TMOUS is great. It still agrevates me sometimes but that is only because I live in an area with crappy signal. Can not give you feed back on your question about it working where you live but I can tell you that you won't regret buying a TMOUS HD2, unless you flash the wrong radio to it lol.

Yeah that is what I am talking about. You can not flash a radio with a 51 in it to a TMOUS. Also you can not flash a radio with these numbers in it 2.04.50.xx or 2.05.50.xx, these where the radios used in the test TMOUS HD2 devices (HTC Pro Three) and they will kill a TMOUS just like a radio with a 51 in it. You have been warned lol.

Good to know. Makes sense that it would work, else roaming wouldn't, but nice to have it confirmed.

Don't sweat it man, as long as you make sure the ROM you are flashing does not have one of those radios you are cool. The custom Win Mo ROMs mostly do not have radio included in them but just to be safe I would only flash a custom ROM from the HD2 T-Mobile Windows 6.5 development forum or a custom ROM that spacificaily says it is compatible with the TMOUS. All Android and WP7 ROMs do not have radios included so they are alll cool to flash. The only real ROMs you really have to watch are the official ROMs as they have radios included. If you flash a official stock ROM only use the one you get from the T-Mobile wibsite and you are gravy.

Don't worry plenty of info on radios for TmoUS.
I'm currently testing radios for my device & usage. 2.12.50.02_2 is a well liked radio for most people. 2.15.50.14 was slated by a few intelligent HD2 users, haven't tested it myself yet.
This device is superb, just read the forums & post if you have concerns on flashing ect.
