There is a minimum spec hardware requirement for WM7. HD2 meets the spec but sadly Topaz is well below.
Of course, it will be interesting to see what our chefs can do with it

But maybe
I say TP, TP2, D, D2 is PLANED...
WM7 is not just one distrib... like W7 is have two level or more (maybe Pro and Stnd.) I think Stnd is for the old devs....
Maybe this will not be the end, but NOW is plane.
WM7 will have radical new kernel with driver implementation...
one hundred words is one to the end, I hope will be true

WP7...
Windows Phone 7... official release for TD2... dream on! In all the history of Windows Mobile devices (now Windows Phone devices), I have never seen or heard of a manufacturer / network provider offering official upgrade for a particular device twice.
TD2 has had official upgrade from 6.1 to 6.5... if you think you'll get official WP7 for this device you're living in dream land
However, that doesn't mean we won't get it for our devices. If only there was a web site somewhere with clever chefs who might be able to cook this for us... mmmm

sadly it DOES
I' sorry to bust your bubble guys but WiMo will no longer support resistive touchscreens (such as the one our TD2s have) and will thus not be able to run on the TD2 at all.
I'm pretty sure there is nothing even our chefs can do about that.

also, drivers will be a problem, since there'll be no WP7 device with Topaz hardware specifications. i'm sure some daring guys will try to port, but it will never work like a stock rom is suppose to. hope i'm wrong.

looks like im going to use the android port when shadowline finishes it then

Windows Phone 7 (user interface "METRO") preview...
Anybody know what is the mobile type in this video?

I have to say it looks incredible. It's an exceptionally clean and integrated UI, I like how they're playing nice with Gmail, Facebook etc and I'm hoping there's twitter and flickr support and the like.
I remember seeing some crummy looking Windows Mobile 7 "leaked" screenshots a few months ago... they must have been deliberately planting these to throw people off the scent becuase they are nothing like this new UI. They did a hell of a job keeping it under wraps! From dondragonka's video you can see it already looks pretty polished and fast. Impressive!
But I wonder about some of the key things I rely on with my Topaz, like spbWallet and iGo.. the app support would want to be just as slick as the UI.

Android + Existing Phones = ??

Yeah, Google has just announced that Android is a platform there is no real GPhone. ok. I'm sure a lot of us are more than interested in getting this platform on our existing phone.
My question to those who understand the internals of our existing HTC phones. Is there hope for us to scrap WinMo and put Android instead. Their website makes it sound like it can be done.
What do you think?
I don't know the answer to that, but it sure seems like it, e specially since Sprint and other carriers are also joining hte Open handset alliance, they may provide support for linking Android with their services and configuration. I can't wait.
Wasn't there a pooled $$ reward that someone set up for the first person who could get Win XP running on the new Intel macs (prior to bootcamp). I suggest a similar motivational scheme (if necessary) to compensate whoever can accomplish a similar feat: getting Android to run on existing HTC hardware.
Anyone interested?
That would be super cool. I mean, I really can't wait...
What if we start a fund-raiser managed by the admins to request donations from members towards the reward? I'm sure that would be even more motivating.
Pool
I would love to start a pool too! The only problem is there are too many devices to support. With getting XP to run on an Intel mac, they all run the same hardware. My Athena is a lot different then somebodies universal or wizard. I'm guessing it will be just like the efforts to port linux over to our handsets. I'm hoping for my device to be able to run it but it would be a huge effort to be able to support all the devices.

It may not be that hard (theoretically) because they (OHA) did all the ground work of getting linux to run on our devices. The work (I think) is in dealing with the customizations for each device. The min requirements they stated seem well below what most of our devices are capable of, so that shouldn't be a problem either. Maybe we'll just have to wait until a device from HTC with that ROM comes out.
WARNING!! I absolutely am talking out of no knowlege.

HTC and Google are working together to release a new phone that will run on the Android platform. The phone will reportedly have a 3- by 5-inch swivel screen like the SideKick that will automatically rotate from portrait to landscape. It will have a full QWERTY keyboard as well, but the coolest part about the phone is the "time-sensitive" touch menus that will expand depending on how long the users touch the screen.
According to Engadget Mobile, this should show up sometime in the second half of 2008.

The tears are coming into my eyes. It was already possible
to use Blueangel as a linux phone two years ago without any help from HTC

It is possible, but as far as I know it, it didn't work quite well... Maybe we shall have better support when Android comes out.

Think of this though, we're struggling at the moment dealing with stability and functionality issues with WinMo on our devices made for that platform. How much more with a totally alien OS coded by a single individual. In as much as I think it was a great achievement, I do not think it was a workable substitute for WinMo. This however presents a huge posibility ..... my .02.

Is this Windows mobile 7?

i was reading a tech blog and found this:

Link to the article
might be intrersting for the xda community
EDIT: 2nd link fixed
looks more like its showing off future smartphone and ppc phone technology. cant really tell
why couldn't it be wm7?
If they want to have an operating system that can compete with apple's then this looks promising to me.

Thanks for the link. Interesting read so far. I'm not done with the Blog.
I'm just wondering though. It says that the camera will be used to calcullate certain activities (which may include gestures such as shake, twist, etc.) instead of using gyroscopes and accelerometers.
While it is too early to tell, it seems that this approach (already attempted with current devices in field) would have a negative impact on battery drain since the camera would have to be "always on" in order to comprehend your movements.
Secondly, what if someone came up with a camera hack? Could you imagine having your camera phone hacked and just being on all the time, displaying your personal life to some freak? I don't know if that is possible or not, but, it would be kinda scarry for me.
The article contradicts itself in a few areas; such as saying scroll bars will be done away with, then later stating that the scroll bars can be dynamically resized. LOL.
Still, it's fun for me to read about forthcoming technology - vaporware or not.

In theory, yes. It will most likely not need different hardware than it needs today.
From the looks of it, WM7 will be a lot more powerful that WM6 and require a lot more processing power. I'm sure there are a few HTC devices which will be able to run it, but I don't think I waoul want to run it on my Touch since it can barely handle WM6.
I don't think there's been any official announcement about the date of release, but end of 2008 or beginning of 2009 sound like the right time frame for Microsoft to roll this out. http://htcsource.com

Ohh, If I had a dime for every time I have read this on this site! "No way we can port WM5 to other devices, the hardware just isn't there!", "there is no way WM5 will ever run as fast as 2003 because of hardware limitations" (then page pool was discovered)
"WM6??!? forget it!" (and here we are with WM6.1). Or one of my favorites: "we cannot have the cube simply because the software/hardware won't support biotouch"... *sights*
The only thing that we cannot imitate (so far) is the accelerometer, other than that, the UIs that I have seen over the past 5 months (Freestyl, PointUI, UltimateLaunch, SPB Mobile Shell 2, rlToday, the cube(s), etc) are similar to (or some even better than) Manilla. With this I am not saying that Manilla isn't cool (it actually is amazing), but I am saying that it can and probably will be done by someone somewhere down the line.
So, think poistive!!!

The One Negative
that I see is that the screen could be larger. Maybe a full 3in
Now everyone will be on HTC jock again and flock to buy this phone, quickly forgetting the 3D issues. HOW SAD
true
but this is also why xda developers exist LOL
I think that once it does hit and it has been sufficiently "modified *cough*hack*cough*
I can see the 3d drivers working and being applied to raphael as well. Slick as hell of a phone
hmm, this will be ripped and ported to most devices im sure, and before that im sure ppl here will make lookalikes

need I remind you I like those lookalikes LOL
anyway
you're right...so hopefully we may see this on a titan...*thinks* yeah right we can't even get touchflo to work properly LOL
I don't see why TouchFLO 3D shouldn't run on other HTC Touch devices.
The diamond has 528 MHz but 640x480 pixel.
Older devices often 400 MHz but only 320x240 pixel.
The processing power shouldn't be the limiting factor. Only memory could become an issue.

Athena 2, Thoth, thoth 100 - When will it be available

Good day,
I am a current X7501 user on ATT in the USA and wonder if anyone has an update a to when the next Athena will become available in the US that will work on the ATT’s wireless network?
Of course asking HTC got me the usual "We will be glad to assist you with this question.... unfortunately we cannot comment on yet to be released products"
Anyone have anything they would care to share?
Also curious if MS Voice command will work with WM 6.5?
Thanks in advance for your response(s).
Claude H.
I have read on the internet that HTC have scrapped plans to make the Toth (at least as we know it as a 5 inch device). The HTC Leo is supposedly its successor and a 4.3 inch clamshell device. I hope I am wrong but that is my understanding.
I heard the same thing
So sad! I've been saving my pennies for its supposed release this year... we'll see :\
I <3 my athena!
I mentioned this before based on my observations...because of poor sales of the X7510...HTC might be reluctant to add a successor to the Athena line. You can't blame the public, HTC's designers are stupid to think that a few additions to the X7510 will make it a hit. Not to mention their stupid idea of taking off the hardware buttons and joystick design.
The HTC Leo...according to others will probably have a slider keyboard. To be honest, I prefer a clamshell type. Nonetheless the specs are marvelous. Let us hope the device actually will be mass produced then released to the public, and not just be left on the drawing board.
I still am hoping that HTC will release a proper successor to the HTC Universal with a powerful processor in clamshell design.
Thanks for the info.
I am looking forward to a large screen WM HTC phone to replace my x7501. Leo or Thoth seem to fit the bill at the moment. I did not see any other large screen WM phones about, so HTC it is.
Anyone have a clue as to when either might hit the sales channel and/or if ATT will pick up the Leo as an offeing or not.
I did not find any info on ETA for either phone on the net.
Thanks people for your input n this.
BTW: Did you all hear about WM 6.5 including "TellMe" voice command software. Too cool.
Thanks,
Claude H.
Claude H.
Anyone have any more news or infor on the Thoth or Leo?
The HTC Leo doesn't appear to be a clamshell, and I doubt a keyboard, but September may reveal more info and whether there will be a Thoth.
I suspect that the Thoth if it does come out (and I hope it will), will be the same specification as the Leo, but of course the larger screen, but the larger battery is the greatest benefit.

Do you have any news?
I am waiting for the Thoth... I hope they will release it and I hope it will have normale audio in addition to stereo speakerphones... I have an Athena 7500 and when my bluetooth ends its battery I am always lost... the size of the Thoth will make it a killer app!!
It would be a smart move for HTC to reconsider development of the Thoth 100. They seem to have been ahead of their time in maxed-out, big-screened mobile os gadgets game, I.e. now we have the iPad, the maxed out iphone, the dell mini 5, the maxed out android, the samsung mondi, the maxed out winmo classic, all pretty much filling in the nitch that the Athena, the maxed-out winmo professional pioneered.
Now would definitely be a great time for them to remind us of this fact with the Thoth 100, marketted as the original mega-convergent device that's also, as was always, still a kindle killer.
C'mon htc!
Yeah, I am really dissappointed that we didn't see something at CES. Maybe the Euro mobile phone world congress? It is less than 2 weeks off...

I just put battery in side and connect to Internet.
Device is great, solid construction (I also have HTC Legend), it is fast, but without multitouch
Can you, please, confirm the presence of AWS (WDCMA-IV) 1700MHz band support?
BTW Android v1.5 was Cupcake, your X10 is running Donut.
PS: I don't give a flying f*ck about multitouch, it's a classic gimmick with no use for me - I prefer to be able use my phone with one hand instead of having to perform some two-handed gymnastics nonsensical gymnastics, only to gain nothing but lose safety when, say, I'm riding a train or driving a car or walking with my daughter holding her hand.
Tnx for correcting me, so where can I check AWS?
Well, I am playing with X10 for few hours, and I think that the main problem is 1.6 Android, in comparation with Legend (which I have) it is slightly slower. This can be seen in putting widgets.
What you see is the "Donut lag" - it is a common problem among Donut-based devices.
After someone releases a 2.x port it should be gone.
Well, we will sit and wait and I will continue to use my HTC Legend, hope to see upgrade rom from SE on 2.1
I know they will, it's only the question of when...
Retail version review from Stuff Mag:
anyway, they say that SE UI is pretty laggy...
Congratulations on your new device beetleman! Glad to see you went with an excellent choice. Hope you can include some more pictures soon.. Have you tried changing the background at all?
Thanks but I won this device and also HTC Legend, last week (what can I say, best week in my life- HTC Legend was in press conference, and SE Xperia x10 on SE event- I am ICT yournalist and editor in chief of Croatian e-zine about smartphones).
So I am very lucky, but as I said, it is good device, with big potential, so in comparation with Legend, Legend has smoother UI (HTC Sense) and implementation of services, but all thanks to 2.1 Eclair, so we wait update on X10.
Today I got him, so I will play with him a while, so we will se how it goes..
my main concern is TFT screen, because AMOLED screens are much better.
