Sorry mate - you can't. It's designed that way on purpose. All you can do is copy the files from the device to the storage card, delete and re-create the shortcut (so it points at the app on the storage card, not the device), and then hope that there's no hard-coded folders in the application or stored in the registry somewhere, otherwise the app simply won't work.

device to card

I don't know of any "how to" on here, but it's easy enough to do.
Open File Explorer and find the folder of the installed application. It's VERY likely to be in \Program Files and will most likely be under \company name\application name, or just \application name. Click and hold on the folder in question till you get the menu and select Cut.
Then, browse to the storage card and, if there's not already one there, create a folder called "Program Files" (Menu, New Folder). Go into that folder and go "Menu, Edit, Paste". That copies the folder from the device memory onto the storage card, and also removes it from the device memory.
Then, go into the application folder and find the application itself (you should recognise it from its name & icon). Click and hold on that and select Copy (not cut). Then, browse to the folder \Windows\Start Menu\Programs and go "Menu, Edit, Paste Shortcut".
Okay. You've now got the original shortcut and a new one. The original one is useless because it points to the where the application was installed, so you need to find and delete that one. Then, the new one is called "Shortcut to....". Simply rename it to something more sensible (the name of the app ) and you're done.
It seems a lot when you type it out like this, but once you've done it a couple of times it's a doddle.
Let us know if you get stuck mate.

Someone answered a similar question for me and mentioned an app called SKTools that moves apps from phone to sd card for you. Any use? I think it is paid software though

Pocket Mechanic does the same..
Like SK Tools but I think it's worth the effort, as there are other tools that clean

To be honest mate, if you're just after apps and don't want them installed on the device (which is fair enough), just don't use MarketPlace. This thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=528
...is jam packed full of stuff, and it's normal installers, so you can generally install it on the storage card. Also, the obvious google will turn up most apps you can think of. I used MarketPlace and found a few things I liked, but hardly anything that wasn't available elsewhere, and usually freeware!
This forum is split into forums by device, and each of them has a general forum, an accessories forum, a ROM dev forum, and a themes and apps forum. In both the general and the themes and apps forums you'll find things that people have developed themselves. The problem with this is that you'll have someone with a Raphael, for example, that posts an app in the Raphael themes and apps forum, but it should actually be in the windows apps forum as it's not Raphael specific - it will actually work on any WM6+ device (this obviously isn't always the case - it's just an example). This means it can be a lengthy process finding things on here, but it's worth getting good at searching, as your initial searches will probably return thousands of threads with hardly anything relevant looking in the results.
Just use this forum. It's a great place.

JUST .cab FILES FOR THE HTC TMO WING. ALL IN ONE PLACE.

Decided to just post .cab files for the T-mobile Wing so they'll all be in one place instead of running all over the net. Feel free to add some if you like.
Some are not clear what they do from the file name:

Attached Files
btasp.cab (23.1 KB, 0 views) <- Use to improve sound quality on Bluetooth Stereo headsets
RC Mod v.2.1 ENG.CAB (307.9 KB, 0 views) <- Allow to change colors of menu bars, etc
Save someone a search maybe.
More
Can only post so many at one time.
Thanks!
Here are some more:
These need to unzip or install .exe files to where you want to open them
Okay not .cabs but useful files to Wing users.

Skin cabs just install like other cabs. Just copy and paste thru Activesync to your Storage Card. Then run them from your phone. Soft restart and go.
Enjoy !!!!
Found some more:
Okay I took off the Directory Assistance .cab. Too many people having problems with it. Getting PMs with complaints, so I just took it off.
Two more:
If I find more I will post them.
these are all great... but is it possible to get a few descriptions??
thanks for your effort in uploading all of this cabs and zips
One note:
HTC Equalizer. After .cab install does not show up anywhere. Place this shortcut in Windows/Startmenu/Programs folder and it will.

I'll link to this in my thread.

Hi, would be happy to explain any of the cabs, do you have a question? My goal with this thread was to keep it short & sweet. Just .cabs so Wing owners would have a place to go get them. Most people are not into alot of reading.
Thanks!
What does the my faves message center cab do? Also, the directory assistance one.
Thank you.

some people don't use my favorite messages and want it off their phone -- this cab will do that -- removes my faves.
what I like about directory assistance cab is you can do a reverse lookup. If someone calls you and you have their phone number on your caller ID, plug in the number on reverse lookup and it shows you who it is.
Thanks for the quick response. I have the myfaves plan, but don't use the plugins and all the other myfaves stuff on my phone. Will this remove all the myfaves junk? And if it does, I still won't be charged for calls to and from those people, right? Hope these questions make sense.
This is a great thread, by the way. Thanks for all your work.

Hmm not sure how T-Mobile charges for my Faves. I don't have it on my plan so I wanted off my phone. Not sure answer to your question. sorry. If you have the plan I would suggest Not removing it from your phone. If you wanted to experiment you could remove them and see what happens but you may have to do a hard reset to get them back.
Thanks
Suggestion for .cab files
This is probably obvious but I'll suggest it anyway.
Once you have all the .cab files you want. Make a folder (named Cab Files) and put the folder on your micro SD Card. Except the disable delete cab.cab. Just put this one on your Storage Card and Run It First.
Then run all the .cab files from your Storage Card/Cab Files folder.
They will stay there and if you ever have to do a Hard Reset if will be really easy and quick to restore your phone the way you want it.
If you have a 4gb or 6gb micro SD card it will hardly take up any space at all.

App to move My Documents

I have searched and search to find a simple app that will move the My Documents folder to the SD and still allow it to sync with Active Sync. I have tried almost every config program out there and NONE have this function. Why is it soo hard to do? why is there not just a cab that changes all the stuff for you and moves it to the SD Card?
Please let me know if there is an app but I have searched everywhere for one with no luck. I keep a bunch of stuff in the My doc folder and it is killing me on the storage space.
Thanks,
SoBBie

Did you try these yet?
Schaps Adv Config 2.1
Memmaid (kinda big)
Chris
Well I actually have MemMaid installed right now... I do not see a way to move the My Documents to the SD and still have it sync with ActiveSync. I have moved many things over with it. I have not tried to use Schaps Adv Config 2.1 but Will give it a try as soon as I can.
Thanks for your help. Not sure if it is working yet but will let you know as soon as I try.

Password recovery?

Not sure if this is the right place, but I saw "Hacking" and thought "This must be it."
Anyway, I just fixed a Herald (TMobile Wing) with a broken LCD - now that I can see it again, it's saying that there's a password on it. The owner (my wife's friend) doesn't remember it, and has pictures on the phone of her kid that she would REALLY like to avoid losing if possible.
Is there any way to recover the password on these things? Obviously, a hard reset is not going to be good, since that'll destroy everything. I just need to find a way to get her back in so she can get her pics and address book off of the phone.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...if this is the wrong forum, please let me know and I'll move my post.
Thanks!

As far as I can remember, a password won't lock down active sync connections so you could use active sync, copy all the files across and then hard reset.
Or possibly, set up a little application that copies all the files from My Documents to a storage card where they can be read by something else.

Unfortunately, ActiveSync is warning me "Your device is currently locked. To connect to or synchronize with this PC, please unlock your device."
I cant get into the phone at all....I think all I might be able to do is make an 'emergency call'.....
Thanks for the reply, though...I appreciate it!

No - I have one I can use, though - it's just never been IN the phone before....
My idea is to use a program to copy all the files from the My Documents folder accross to a storage card. This should be possible because the program that watches for the storage card to be inserted can start a process that can then copy the files. I have seen a program that does the copying somewhere but I can't remember where...

what are these startups?

Hey all.
New owner of the X1 and so far loving the phone.
I've currently got the following on startup on my X1 and I was wondering if someone could be kind enough to explain what it loads and if it's ok to delete:
AutoShortcut
PanelDefault
Panelmanager
poutlook
cheers
I would hazard a guess that poutlook is Pocket Outlook, and PanelDefault / Panelmanager run the Panels interface for Xperia phones.
I don't mean to be nasty or rude, but if you didn't know what Panelmanager is then that suggests that you should perhaps spend some time learning more about your device before you start deleting stuff.
For now I suggest you leave things be and just enjoy playing with it.

You could create a backup of your settings and try it out for yourself, if you do not want to heed other people's warnings.
1) Panel Manager would not load (so no panel when u restart the phone).
For the other files you have the description here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=410139&page=16
Also you should (have) post(ed) in a section that's designed just for you guys...

Thanks for the bad attitude reply. If you don't have anything nice to say, ignore post.
I believe I posted in the right section, if i didn't I apologies but let the admins worry about that.
Hey, come on...play fair. There's no bad attitude here, stormlv is trying to be helpful, as am I.
Another option you have is to RENAME the files with a different extension so they are no longer recognised and the OS won't know what to do with them so they won't run.
That way you can discover what the behaviour of the device is, and if it doesn't please you then you just rename them back again.
if you are not using outlook then you could try deleting that and for panel manager i am not sure because sometime before i have had panel manager crash but the panel interface still works so maybe it restarts its self when you press the panel button - as Mr Anderson said renaming the files would be a good way to test which ones you do and dont want
one should avoid deleting anything beyond the Windows folder unless you know what you are doing.
any files to delete would be stored in ur device documents folder, like pics, vids, and other stuff that i call demo files
