I know for many this sounds stupid and copletely unnecessary to do because android is so awesome ;P
but i was just wondering if its possible?

Well, there's something that lets you dual-boot WinMo and Android on a WM device, optimized for 6.5. Dunno about the other way around, though.
dear sweet lord above, why would you pollute this device with winmo?
your right it is stupid ! winmo sucks !
see those answers are exactly what i was trying to avoid

yea i have that on my old i900 but i dont think it works the other way around, cheers tho
This has been asked once or twice before and the conversations just do not end well. It might be possible but it would require quite a bit of low level work, the bootloader (or whatever it is called in embedded systems) being a significant hurdle in and of itself. If you want winmo you are far better off going with an HD2 or waiting till something else comes out.

i wouldnt mind dual booting in WinMo 6.5 or better yet to iPhone OS (to get all the good apps)
I'll probably through winmo7 on my nexus when it comes out.
wow, ANOTHER thread on this....
Wmware is releasing mvp soon. It runs on windows ce now but they are making it for android. Soon you will be able to run any os on your phone.

screw that!
i rather hackintosh the nexus! i love my iphone only reason i got the nexus is for my 3g in tmobile in the us. i still have the grandfathered 5.99tzones and i get 3g all day. got the nexus unlocked for 529 with tax it was 570 i think.
imagine an iphone running snapdragon, oled screen, 5meg camera 512ram SWEET!!!
HACKINTOSH BEFOR WINMOBILE!
wm
I would definitely try WM on my nexus one.
I think those people that are saying, that android is so great that you do not need anything else, are stupid at least.
For example - try getting cracked navigation software working on your Nexus One...With WM you can have iGO working very well or Navigon or Tom Tom. You might say that you can use built in maps - but in Europe people are changing countries after driving few hundred miles - so data roaming would cost more than buying new GPS device...
So while I understand that you love your android, but there are plenty of good stuff on the "dark-side"...
Isn't HD2 hardware wise very similar to Nexus One? Wouldn't it be possible to put HD2 boot loader on Nexus One?

Hi,
I know it might be an odd question but:
Is it possible to flash an HTC HD2 ROM on the nexus one there by changing the OS to Windows Mobile?
I'm asking this because I see that the HW of both phone are almost the same but the nexus one is cheaper.
I want to buy the nexus one but if i don't like the android OS I wanted to know if I can change it to Windows Mobile with the sense interface?
Regards,
Michael
coming from htc diamond to g1 to magic and to nexus one,
HEll u will love the android interface..
WM is crap.
So i think i answered yr questions
No,
Bye!
I don't think I've heard of anyone coming from Windows Mobile to Android and wanting to go back.
When I started using Android from Windows mobile it was like going from swimming in mud to swimming in Evian.
Try it, if you live in the UK you have 14 days to return anyway (I think).
Something like this sounds like it'd break the time space continuum or something. Wasn't the HD2 skin made to look like the Sense Android interface in the first place?

Actually, Windows Mobile is the ONLY mobile OS that can play pretty much any video file I can throw at it; DivX, Xvid, avi, wmv, etc. And they played flawlessly. That's one of the things I sorely miss during my move to Android
And before you say it takes a lot of power or whatever to do this, I did all this on my Samsung SCH-i730, about 4 years ago. http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/samsung-sch-i730-verizon/4505-6452_7-31313312.html
I see absolutely no excuse for Android or the iPhone for not having this.

It isn't a matter of power, it is a matter of someone making an app to support it. The big names on WM are starting to take a long hard look at Android and developing for it. As well, the SDK has gotten much better and increased overall support for this and that.
I would be willing to bet that by Summer we have coreplayer, or something similar. As well, IIRC the actual HTC version of this phone with SenseUI has support for all of those video formats, except for maybe wmv. And those features and what not will be ported over to the Nexus One when that day comes.
Might as well install the iPhone OS while your at it
CorePlayer will hopefully make its way to Android soon...

Just wait for a Sense Rom to hit the N1 then you can have the Sense interface and have android functionality.

Yeah, if you read through(not sure if you did or not) it is pretty clear the delay isn't because they can't make it, it is because they are waiting for and SDK/NDK that supports everything they need, since they want it to be a universal app.
From the sounds of it, Google is working on allowing them to include their libs natively in the near future, and when they do that they should be where they need to be.
WM6.5
Yes there should be a suitable rom, for Nexeus One.
And why not its a lot of fun having dual boot or may be tripple boot using Ubnuntu.
Ashrafali.
HTC HD2
Waking up old threads isn't good for health, they eat your brain.
And if for 10 months nobody cared enough to make such ROM - there's your answer. Because it's worthless waste of developer power. Want one? You can always try to do it yourself. I'm glad the developers work on other things, that are the future, and not the past.

At least here in the US the HD2 is really cheap, while the nexus is holding its price really well. In my local craigslist a hd2 costs around $170-250, while a nexus is $300-450. You may want to check ebay and just buy a hd2 for cheap and ship it to your country. However, i doubt you will be disappointed with android so nexus would be a better bet.
OK
Help me learn how to make one I will be glad just show me the way, few links and I will pick up, trust me I like to do this .............

I came from Windows mobile to Android recently and too gush at the interface.
The only reason I'd go back to Windows mobile is for activesync functionality, mainly with outlook. (I have tried all the tricks btw)
Would the Sense ROM be a dual boot like the 4g phone has? Will it sync nicely with outlook?

What type of sick individual would do such a thing?!
JK buddy I had the Hd2 at one point but I'd much rather have Android any day of the week
I think it is dumb that people are attacking the author of this topic just because he enjoys using windows mobile. Personally I used to have a mogul and it was a great phone to me. I don't think all you android fan boys need to be all aggressive like that. I personally like android more just because of its rapid updating and ui. But that doesn't mean that other people wouldn't like windows mobile better. But on the other hand I might switch to windows mobile 7 it looks really nice and i'm sure they will get it together with some developers.
The hardware is promising, is there any opportunity any cooked rom like X2 Rom can work for X10?
I don't really see why you would like WinMo on that phone.
Android is a nice platform as well as Windows Mobile. and it got a better market place.
It is probably possible, but then people needs to get they're hands on drivers and so on first.
I hope it meant to be a joke... Windows Mobile is a piece of ****, I am more than ready to forget it for the rest of my life. Ahh and Windows Mobile 7 seems to be even worse, thanks to the removal of multitasking, the sole reason I used WinMo for years.
well when i first saw this phone i was like I GOTTA HAVE THAT PHONE... then i saw it ran android Q.Q and my dream phone got flushed in the toilet before even getting it!!! so its a very legit question if anyone have any interest in porting winmo to it!!! i love winmo and i have so many programs for it... but ill probably buy it anyway even if it got the little green leprechaun in it... or should i wait for a SE wp7s... haha jk thatll be like 2 years from now if im lucky.....
Why not just go with the HD2?
Windows mobile is terrible and outdated, android owns it in every way, why would you take it over WM? Also if you want WM that badly with awesome hardware just get the HD2, thats like people asking for the supersonic to have WM LOL, sure the Supersonic is better a bit hardware wise, but not by a crazy margin imo.

Sigh... WinMo is still the most productive, customizable and functional OS out there. Also, the best busineess solution.
Andorid is still in diapers. Maybe one day it will be able to do as much as WinMo, but for now, it can't.
I agree that there is no sense in porting a different OS to a phone not made for it, except if it's dual-boot, which is cool.

Its already been ported to the HD2. I'm not sure why people want WP7 it sucks compared to 6.5.X. WP7 is so locked down with no multitasking, copy n paste, and restricted install on apps. Granted something like side loaded apps will be taken care of with cooked roms but no multitasking or copy n paste is big problem for me.
I'm sorry but all I want to say is SRSLY? I hope you didn't really just find out about this, this has been all over tech blogs, here and tmonews for months, even before the HD2 was released, just give it time and it will be ported.

If you can't stand WinMo6.5, you should consider returning it. Their won't be fully-functional ports of either WinPhone 7 or Android until at least the end of the year, maybe longer(probably). This is a WinMo6.5 phone... why did you get it in the first place if you can stand WinMo? If you want an Android phone, get an Android phone. If you want WinPhone 7, wait for a WinPhone 7 phone.

It hasn't been released, and it's debated whether it's real or not. And it was never stated that everything was working, plus without good video drivers, it won't be very useful.
From what I have heard and seen...6.5 > 7
Besides...7 will not be out till probably Q4 and thats not to say that TmoUs will have a Winmo 7 device at launch.
TmoUS now gives full handset discounts after 1 year, and I myself have 4 lines on my account...2 of which are still available for a full upgrade after I upgraded my line to get the HD2...so I dont think there is much to worry about here.
Besides...I have no doubt is the abilities of the XDA cooks
I say keep it! the Hd2 has a bright future with the ppl of Xda on top of it.
Stick it out man.. its gonna have wp7 and android later on for sure.. i have no doubt.
Mod it dude.. you can get it just how you want almost. theres is many roms and mods and theres no limit.
I say keep your phone because it's a great machine and 6.5 can be good. As far as android and WP7S go it could be a long wait. Android is in progress but there is a lot of work to do.
On the Windows Phone 7 Series side I wish people would stop promising that XDA will port it over for this phone. We don't know. There is a video of some reliable people claiming they have it partly working but until we have something we can install it is all rumor.

It was widely known that the HD2 wouldn't get a WP7 update weeks before it ever came to t-mobile (why do you think they're selling it so cheaply?)
That being said, there's a good chance that an unofficial WP7 and/or Android port will come to the HD2 in the future. The biggest question is how long it will take for this to finally happen...and if by the time it does, you would have moved onto a new device or not.
Supposedly WP7 has already been ported to the HD2, but there isn't any solid confirmation that its real. On the other hand, there isn't any solid confirmation that its fake either.
If you don't like Windows Mobile, then I would return the device to t-mobile, rather than going through the mind f*ck of waiting for a port to come. I don't know why anyone bought the HD2 without being absolutely sure they could stand Windows Mobile. I don't know why anyone would buy a device on the *chance* that it would be upgradable to a new OS.
WP7 will not be perfect
I agree with many ppl here that WP7 will be less functional than 6.5 mainly because of its interface.. I know that having tiles for every single app and scrolling vertically in order to find the app at the bottom would not be nice...
However, putting all the negatives of WP7 aside, the only reason I would want it running on my HD2 is mainly for the apps... lets face it, Microsoft is going to go crazy on new applications and all the developers are gonna support WP7 once it comes out... so all I want is application support as HD2 has all the hardware required to run the apps for WP7...
Love the HD2 and WM6.5, just want more and better looking apps... there are many good ones out but I would love it if I had the option to pick between similar apps...
I'm a software developer and let me tell you, working on applications for the .net 3.5 CF is horrible. For me, WP7's support for both silverlight and XNA is probably the biggest draw for me. Plus the XBOX Live integration will be killer. I saw a demo of the same application running on the phone and on the xbox and the dev said that 90% of the code stayed thed same. That is a HUGE win.
I think that the quality, look and feel, availability, and discoverability of apps is the the main reason for WP7.
WM 6.5 is a computer, and I use it like a computer. I had an iPhone before my HD2 and even though it was limited, slower, smaller, locked, etc the fact that I could search for an app and find exactly what I was looking for in seconds ON THE PHONE and have it work and consistantly look good is what I miss most. That is what WP7 is bringing to the table, and if numbers are any indication, that's what people want. Just look at market share trends.
Dream setup: Dual boot WPClassic and WP7.

They are a slightly different shape, and the TMOUS HD2 has a 1 gig internal ROM, where as the International T8585 only has 512 Mbs. It also has 576Mbs of RAM without having to HSPL and flash a new ROM to enable it.
There is also an Aussie HD2, I can't remember the number of it without Googling, that's got a different frequency range for their 3G & HSDPA, but retains the same International T8585 shape. (*edit* It's a Telstra HD2 T9193)
And yes, they all run Android.
So which one do you suggest? They both operate the same way, meaning adding android?

Well if you live in Australia get the Telstra one, if you live in North America get the T-Mobile one and if you live anywhere else in the world get an International T858. They are all essentially the same phone, they will all run Android exactly the same as one another.

Being English I wouldn't have a clue. You can pick up new backcovers for ~$30 though I believe.
If you are buying the HD2 solely to run Andoid I would look at getting a HTC phone designed to run that OS. As far as I am aware Android on the HD2 still, eats battery life like it's going out of fashion. I don't run Android on my phone, I think it's a gimmick, so I don't keep much of an eye on the progression of it, it may well be better now. But I still doubt you could make a full day on one charge.
What do you suggest then? I love android.. I've used windows mobile and i didnt like it very much...
So the battery sucks with android on it?
I need a phone with the same specs..

Your decision comes down to where you live...
In the US you can pickup the EVO on sprint or Incredible/DroidX on verizon (only phones w/ specs @ or near HD2's)
If you still want an HD2 you can run Android so-so at this point. I live in the US and have the Telstra T9193 from AUS, because it works here on at&t 3G, TMOUS not really an option for me. I am running Froyo (2.2) at the moment off and on between WinMo. Android on HD2 is a work in progress, everyday it gets better, but no 100% guarantee that it will ever be perfect, because HTC built the HD2 to run WinMo, not Android.
thats correct that they built it to run windows mobile...

Most people here will say yes, but it's a dead OS. There are no new apps coming out for it as Windows 7 is being shipped in the coming months. So you can't expect the iPhone/Android app market for WM it's very limited.
If I was you I'd not get the HD2, I'd go for an EVO or a Nexus One or something of the sort, as it's clearly what you are after.
I'm getting pretty much the same battery life with Android (Matt 1. 5 w/latest zimage & kernel, full RAM etc.) as I do with WinMo. It's pretty much fully functional now, and it keeps getting better.
That said, I still love WinMo. It's a very different experience with Android. Some things work better, some things less so, and ultimately I prefer having the choice to being stuck with one or the other. It'd be untrue if I said I'd bought my HD2 without hoping that an Android port would be on the horizon, and the same for WP7. It's a real testament to the skill and dedication of the many devs involved that its gotten this far.
I don't know if I'd recommend the HD2 to people who just want to run Android. The Desire HD is on the way, and it's basically the Desire with the HD2's screen. The HD2 is more of a best of both worlds device, but if you've never used WinMo extensively.. I recommend it, yet I don't know if it's necessarily the same audience Android has.
Still, I'd not settle for anything less at this stage - it can only keep getting better, and if you (like me) enjoy modding each and every aspect of your smartphone, there is nothing better out there right now (Maybe the N900, HD2 has better hardware though).
As for the model, doesn't matter - just check up on the 3G bands and buy the cheapest and most useful one for you.
Posted from my HD2 via XDA app.

EVO and HD2 have similar specs, but unfortunately there's a lot more different than similar, or we would have had android running better and faster than we do now.
Personally I love WinMo 6.5.x, you can do so much w/ it with the great Chefs around here. The reason I am playing w/ android so much is because when my HD2 dies or I just decided to move on I may make the jump to android, because as much as I love WinMo (6.5.x) the new WindowPhone7 that's coming to replace the WinMo OS blows in my opinion.
M$ had decided to turn the WinMo into a locked, neutered, iphone copy-cat to cash in on peoples desire to not have to think and still use a "smartphone". I like the idea of standardizing hardware requirement so all manufactures produce quality phones so every manufacturer spits out the same good experience, but the OS is lacking.......... I wish M$ had decided to continue to develop WinMo 6.5.x parallel to WP7 (business/tech-savvy & then media-player driven WP7 for the others)
/rant over
The call is yours, but FYI WinMo 6.5 support and app development is pretty much over since everyone (app/product designers) focusing on WP7. Like I said earlier android, to me, seems to be the future of smartphones, could be wrong, but I am not impressed with the new WP7 that's coming out.
Personally I would research WP7 to see if you like it, hate it or can live with it, because that's M$ new direction. Android has so many options it's not even funny. Motorola is a big time player in the android OS market now along w/ HTC. If I had the choice I would get an EVO from sprint, but sprint is only so-so (data) coverage around where I live.
Also since you are TMO you can still find a Nexus One, I know its a slightly smaller screen, but bad ass phone and similar specs. A lot HD2 builds are based on the NO.
Sorry I can't just tell you what phone to get, since it is such a personal choice, I only hope I was able to get you some info to think on as you make your decision. Good luck.
Wow everyone here is very helpful! I wish there was a "Thank You" button
If i do sell my Cliq in less than 2 weeks, I will get the HD2 to experiment with it.
I rooted my Cliq to add Android 2.1, as you can see, I love changing roms to experience different tastes...
It seems like the HD2 has a lot of roms, I think it would be perfect for me.
I can't buy a Nexus One because I don't have $500 to buy a phone like that

Aye it's worth a go, if worse comes to worse and you don't like it, you can always sell it on again.
I love WM 6.5.x, I love the programs and the UI. I hope you'll get on with it and dual booting with Android as well.
TMOUS vs International HD2
http://pocketnow.com/thought/t-mobile-hd2-vs-htc-hd2-comparison
This is the difference between the TMOUS HD2 and the international one
I live in egypt and i went for the TMOUS, as it's better and alot cheaper
the only issues are : being branded and the boot up animation for T mobile
i got it worth $ 450 brand new and unlocked with code
i love this phone really, but really wish to try out android, but i don't like fooling around with the original software, i prefer the stock rom, in my opinion the best stability

Would WM7 be ported to HD2?

I think it's safe to say no.
If you want to run android full-time, I'd get a native android phone. If your using t-mobile, I would go with the samsung galaxy s... (i think it's called something else at t-mobile)... It has as fast of processor as HD2, but it also has a dedicated gpu, so it will be much quicker with apps and games... and it run android natively. It will probably cost about the same as getting the HD2 from t-mobile... probably 150-200 with contract... maybe cheaper.
I was just curious if anyone has any thoughts on Gingerbread on a Samsung Focus? I read that the Nexus S with the recent Gingerbread installed is the identical phone. I am very happy with Phone 7 and have no intentions of switching but the possibility could give us all much more value with the Focus. The thought of Gingerbread on this phone may also add to the longevity and a market value if someone wanted to sell it before their contract is up. I love phone 7 and hope they start some regular updates to make the phone even better.
Yep.. it's called the captivate LOL and probably not because it's a 3 button phone, kinda why HD2's and other window mobile phones are not upgradable

on a side note.... the HD2 is upgradable... they've successfully put windows 7 on it. The only catch so far is it doesn't have the correct licencing so it isn't able to have working live tiles or the marketplace. But none the less.... its on there working.
I dont think anyones been working on Android on our phones yet. First thing's first is to get WP7 cracked open totally then they can do their magic. That's still a ways off though.
If you want android on a phone, how about you buy an android phone and not clutter wp7 areas.

last time I check the gps, camera, and... something else didn't work but to add live tiles not working on top of that... what's the sense?

well work in progress...considering they said WM7 wouldn't be able to run at all on any other devices Id say its a pretty huge step. Probably the only WM phone that can do it and do it well. Android still doesn't work fully on my touch pro 2 but I kept that phone just for that reason that one day it WILL be able to run it.
the HD2 can run android (almost full), WM 6.1/6.5, WM7 and I think they were saying they're starting to work on getting webos on it too so, pretty stellar phone I would say!
Still, like I said, I think android running on our phones is still a long ways a way. They only just recently cracked one of the HTC WP7's to be able to run other roms. Big step for sure but still a far cry from running an entirely different OS

Yeah well considering I use the GPS, and camera a lot, and live tiles now that I have it. I wouldn't consider that close lol That 4.3 screen is just awesome for TomTom. I'd rather use my HD2 as an android device before a windows phone 7. Web OS might be interesting though... aah so little time some many possibilites. Another problem is the Focus is only a 3 button phone, I duno if you can rework Android to work on 3 instead of 4.

Thanks for the useless comment. This is a legitimate question. Not all of us want to spend the money on every different devices. I'd like to be able to run android for testing on the Focus if it was possible. Nothing wrong with that question.
