Why the heck can't we get it all in one device?! The Verizon SGS is by far the best looking of all versions of the SGS. The iPhonish chrome lining of the SGS is painted black on the Verizon SGS = a better look. The Verizon rear is also changed with an all black dotted design, rather than that awful blue dotted design. The Verizon also has a flash and even though there is no front facing camera, I'm totally good with that because I'm not hooked on Apple. I mean lets be real here; folks didn't give a dang about front facing cameras in the U.S. until Apple put one on the iPhone. FFC's have been around for years in Europe (HTC HD and many others) and we didn't miss them then.
Okay so what's wrong with the Verizon SGS? Well it only comes with 2GB of storage memory rather than 16GB like the ugly ATT SGS. Why oh why could they not give it to us all in one package.......
A classic saying says this:
Dont put all your eggs in one basket.
just add a 32gb SD card and you have your all in one device? galaxy is limited to 1.8gb of local apps storage anyway. Froyo will let you have it on SD I think.

I was hoping to rid myself of my iPod Classic (16GB Internal + 32GB Micro SD Card). Large music and audiobook collection......
The Galaxy S has way more internal memory enabling it to have 1.8GB for apps and stuff. The Fascinate has far less internal memory... 2GB total. All to make room for a flash. The Epic also suffers from the same fate. The Captivate and Vibrant will have the 16GB touted with the intl. version
I had not read that the Fascinate had an LED flash.
Sold. I have been on the fence about the HTC Incredible (I do like the Sense UI overlay) vs. the Galaxy S.
I am not concerned about the internal storage - I only have about 15gb of music, so a 32gb card provides me pretty substantial overhead. It irked me that there was no flash on the Galaxy S, though, as it seems like such an easy and useful feature to add.
I agree that front-facing cameras do not excite me. I don't take self-portraits and have zero interest in on-the-fly face-to-face phone chats.
Registered just to respond to this thread. Completely agree with OP. I'm currently with Verizon, their version of SGS looks better, but hate that it only has 2gb on board. You can never go wrong with having more memory. Fast 32gb cards are what an extra $100, plus with 16gb already on board, the Tmo version has potentially more total storage by adding a 32gb card to it. Even if I only have 18gb of music now, how can I know what I'll have in the future? Video podcasts? Movies? Recorded video and pictures? Having the ability to swap memory cards is an awesome feature, but the less I have to do it the better.
Considering jumping to Tmo and the uglier design for the added memory and HSDPA. Torn.

Here's the gallery of Verizon SGS images that had me sold as far as the looks go and you can see the flash in a few of the images: http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-verizon-fascinate/

I left T-Mobile after trying the HD2 for a couple of months and 3G wasn't available enough in some areas for me. Verizon seems to be the best network for me in my area and travels, so I'd like to go back to them (currently on Sprint with the Evo). The look of the Evo is very nice and so leaving it for an SGS version that just doesn't appeal to my eyes the way the Evo does, was on my list of cons. But Verizon's SGS can take care of that.
I may just have to end up holding onto the iPod to store all of my music and audiobooks. And then just sync playlists of my most wanted music/audiobooks to my smartphone. Guess I'm still dreaming of an all in one superphone (128GB storage, Canon quality camera, etc).........
The HD2 has terrible 3G reception

heygrl, I noticed your speed test results in your sig. Was that in the LA area? If so, what's your overall coverage/speed like in socal?
Hm, I had seen the blue back in some review photos, but my (Asian?) Galaxy S is all black, and IMO has better design and finish than the EVO.
I walked into Best Buy ready to buy the EVO, but when compared to my iPhone 3Gs, it seemed poorly made. On the other hand, after ordering the Galaxy S sight unseen from Ebay, I am reasonably happy with its built.
I was planning to dump AT&T and get T-Mobile, but data is a real issue on T-Mobile in LA.
On AT&T, I see "H" and just measured 1817kbps down, 1088 up.
If I insert my new T-Mobile SIM card, I see "E" and barely get 60-70 kbps down, and low 100s up.
What APN settings are people using for T-Mobile?
AT&T 3g and Tmobile 3G are on different frequencies. You have one compatible with AT&T. You'll only see edge speeds on TMobile with that phone.
Also... I don't understand the complaints about the look of the Captivate vs the original SGS. I prefer the Captivate. I think the SGS looks too much like an iPhone.

European Galaxy S doesn't have 1700 band. It doesn't work on Tmobile's 3g network. It will only work with AT&T's 3g network. You need to buy the Vibrant if you want to see Tmo's HDSPA speeds.
PC magazine did a review earlier this year of all carriers' data speeds, for LA, they gave Tmo the highest score (combined raw speed with reliability).
You'll have to get the Vibrant if you want T-Mobile 3G
Can I use the Verizon version in Europe or it is only for US??
that was one of the reasons i returned my HD2 - side by side with my MyTouch 3G, the HD2 kept jumping from 3G > EDGE and back to 3G, while the MT3G showed strong and steady 3G signal (not reading the bars, but going into that #*#*4636*#*# access and reading the signal strength
figured it had same issues as the nexus one, weak antenna or radio chip

I'm not in Los Angeles, but I hear favorable things.. still some 3G coverage holes to be dealt with this year

Has to be, because it was pathetic to see this phone drop 3G constantly. Sure, the 3G signal *was* weak but the only phone to drop out (when held of course) was the HD2.
hello everyone, this is my first post and i really like what i see. im looking into this tap thing and will like it to make call too. now i see read a few way, any of this way will work on the sprint version? and any pros and con will be apreciated too.
The CDMA versions of the GT (Sprint/Verizon) are going to be extremely more difficult to hack to make legitimate phone calls than the GSM versions (Tmobile/ATT). This is because with GSM, you can flash the EMEA FW (and other tricks) to get the phone capability and then simply pop in a SIM that has an active phone account.
With CDMA, there is no SIM. All account information is linked by the device's hardware IMEI ID and is controlled by the provider.
Also, CDMA is not as widely used abroad (if at all) as GSM.
That's my understanding of the situation. If I am wrong, someone please correct me so I'll stop spreading lies.
thanks for the response, and will be possible to use the other method (voip) one ?
I currently use voip on my GT with my Ring Central account. I am testing various sip clients right now so I can't tell you which I prefer yet.
I can make very clear calls using wifi as well as 3g so far.
Any of the the options your looking into free?
Would love to hear the outcome of your testing ;-)
The clients are free but my voip service (Ring Central) has a monthly charge. I know there are free voip providers out there but I haven't tried any nor do I know their details
I'm on Sprint but the best bet right now is the T-Mobile Samsung Tab for its larger 16GB internal flash, black back instead of white, better chance of getting voice to work partly due to being SIM based and better priced plans ($40 for 5GB data >5GB is throttled so no overrages or $59 non-contract Even More Plus with 500 talk minutes, unlimited web and unlimited text that a T-Mobile employee claims to work with non-contract $600 Tab provisioned for Android device). It appears to support HSDPA so hopefully speeds are better than standard 3G on Sprint and Verizon.
Speed might be better on TMO but the Sprint GT I have has the same 16gb sdcard and 2gb internal memory.
I think you miss the point.
As far as I am aware, the TMo Tab has 16gb of internal memory whereas the Sprint has only 2gb *before* you take any cards in the MicroSD slot into consideration.
Regards,
Dave
Yeah, I noticed the AT&T model will have 2gb+16gb internal plus external microsd. I have to admit, im a little pissed with the cdma version

For some people that doesn't matter. It still gives you a 16 gb sd card which I'm fine with. Apps don't take up much space on the internal 2gb anyway so no big deal. I have a sprint Epic and loads of apps including full copilot and aura gps apps and I'm just fine.
Plus in my case i have a Mac and it's hit or miss having the USB storage mode work on the Epic so I like being able to use a micro sd card reader with all that storage to move stuff back and forth. Can't do that with the Tmo version if it's not mounting properly.
No need to rush out and pay full price now. I'll wait till next year when they flood craigslist in the 400 price range after folks get tired. Got my Epic for $350 on CL brand new in box, clean esn no contract. No rush for me.
It's true I am not really "missing" anything with the lower internal memory of the Sprint version since we can use the external microsd, it's just the fact that other carriers have it and Sprint doesnt. It would be nice to have, but not a deal breaker I guess.
I'm currently using a 3g simcard i had for my g1 and it does seem to work on the mytouch, but should i be using (or do they even recommend using a 4gsimcard) for the device to improve data speed?
I've been using the same sim card for probably close to 6 years since when I had the dumbest of the dumbphones. It shouldn't be necessary to switch them out, but go to T-mobile and see if you can get a new one anyways. It can't hurt.
There is a "New generation" sim card. They will switch it for you for free. I suggest you do it. Cant hurt. I also know the contact area on the newer ones look different. (by contact i mean the physical sim card, not your phone book contacts lol)
Thanks (both of ya) Ya i'm thinking the new generation simcard is what i heard awhile back and wanted to make sure if it was correct or not to use fo rthis phone, thanks again for the quick reply's (great feedback on this forum)
I have never had speed issues with my old SIM card, but I have a Sensation coming in the mail and I will activate the new SIM card that comes with it and put it in my MT4G to see if there is an increase in my speeds.

I actually did an experiment with this. On the T-Mobile forums, right after the MT4G came out there was some debate over 3G SIM vs 4G SIM. My SIM was 6 to 8 years old, from before there was 3G. It worked fine in my MT4G, but as an experiment I did some signal and speed tests in multiple locations, then switched to the SIM that came with my MT4G and repeated the tests. I found no measurable difference. As far as I know, the SIM registers you to the network, but otherwise has nothing to do with what the radio in your device picks up.
The only the difference i notice with the new sim that came my 4g was that the lock screen no longer says 'get more' which was bothering me anyway. I believe the new sim can hold more text messages for phones that don't store texts on phone memory.

Hello, I have bought a Atrix and I want to know if Atrix is the same as Atrix 4G. Also I want to question about internal storage, in official web say it's 16Gb, but can I use 16gb for install software? what's the factory capacity for software?
I don't find that information in any web...
your web must be a different version than mine because I can find it just fine.

Atrix and Atrix 4G depends where you bought it. You will have around 10-11GB of useable space on internal storage.

Atrix and Atrix 4G are the same thing. But the Atrix 4G doesn't have "real" 4G speed because it's not LTE.
The storage is 16GB, and i think you can use 10GB for apps/storage.
Thanks to all.

If you want more storage I picked up a 16gig class 6 micro SD at Costco for $20 last week.

16GB is divided into 2GB for Apps, 4GB for Webtop and 10GB for storage.
