Hello
I´m really tired of installing ROMs that simply doesn´t work because the ext3 requirement in the partition layout.
As a user of a Vodafone HTC Magic 32B, I don´t really need my apps to be installed in the SD card, and I need ROMs that only need Swap.
I think that this could be a good start to ROMs that only require that partition layout: Fat32 + Swap
This should be in the General forums.
Moved to general as not ROM Development.

Super-D doesn't require ext or Swap, although you can have them if you want.

Super-D is a very nice rom, but, for 1.6, i prefer the stability of AmonRa Rav 1.6.3.
Anyone knows any "sense" rom without a2sd??
Many thanks

Heya..
I copied all my apps to my sd card...but im wondering how I can install and run the apps from the sd so they arnt in phone memory?
Can't find any info on this >_< i mite just suck as searching though
Thanks in advance
/bump
anyone?
depends, if you have root, and if your on the T-mobile G1 or the Rogers HTC.
you should read up a bit more before posting, some of this stuff can be found very easily and you don't even specify which phone you have.
either case you still need to root your phone.
if your with rogers dream, than your stuck, it isn't possible yet
oh sorry.
i have a rogers htc dream rooted...so its nto possible? darn, any idea when it mite be available?
D
hmm...didn't know it wasn't possible on the Rogers. I figured he could just root, partition and install the latest Cyanogen ROM
if you can install cyanogen's rom, you can just partition your sdcard to ext3 and cyans rom will automatically set up apps to sd
make sure the fat partition comes first
fat32, ext3 partition
make sure the ext3 partition isnt greater than 1.5gb
use the search function for info on the above
i read you can't use cynaogens roms on rogers though..something about incompatability?
D
Howdy.
I'm kinda new to the whole scene, but I managed to root my tattoo and than flashed the modaca R3 with additions.
But somehow I'm not sure if app2sd is working at all. Do I have to prepare something like Idontknowwhat creating a folder named "APP" or so?
I hope someone can actually help me..
Greetings

You need an Ext2/3/4 Partition. This can be done in recovery but wipes your sd card, so back up first
Also, MoDaCo ROM only includes Apps2SD if you select it in the online kitchen. If you don't have access to this, my ROM (see signature) is also based on stock and has Apps2SD
Hope this helps
Okay. That problem seems solved.
But I still have one question left:
When are the apps saved to SD? Are only new ones affected or does this also work for updates?
Thanks

If you have the correct partition, all Apps are moved to the SD the first time you boot with Apps2SD enabled, then all new apps are installed there
I also have a few questions about partitioning to get apps2sdd. If you partition the sdd does the gold-card get wiped as well, or it just wipes the user data? And is Windows still able to mount the sdd when it's an ext2/3/4 partition? Finally is it safe to partition when using a custom ROM? (using HCDR 1.5 atm)

Yes, the goldcard will get wiped. Everything does, unfortunately.
Windows is still able to mount the Fat partition of the SD card when using an Ext partition.
And partitioning in recovery is independent of the ROM being used so it will be fine no matter which ROM you use (glad to know you're on mine though )
Hi guys,
I just swapped my HTC Desire with an HD2.
I'm looking for a fast and stable NAND Gingerbread Sense 2.0/2.1 rom, possibly with good performances even without OC (bugs and glitches are big showstoppers for me, of course).
Being the EU version, D2EXT or Apps2SD is required.
Currently, I'm stuck with Mikhei777's Android 2.2.1 Sense 2.0 NAND Firmware.
Could you please suggest me some other ROMS? The Android NAND Development section is quite messy.
Thanks in advance.
Help, please.
I hate bumping, but I also have a serious problem here: after installing 10 apps internal memory is (completely) gone on my HD2. The same thing never happened on my Desire thanks to Data2Ext.
I checked almost every thread in the first 5 pages of the NAND Development section, but I found nothing.

I completely agree about the speed, it's the latest rom I tried, but it can't see the 1GB ext partition on my sdcard (in fact, the free memory available on after the installation is about 80 mb only).
Do you have this problem?

there is a difference between free space and free memory available to the system, are you sure you are reading the correct one?

Naturally I'm referring to free space, of course.
Sorry for the misleading term, in Italian space and memory are synonyms.

Sure! I can't understand why. Tomorrow I'll read some logs, maybe the reason is specified there.

Nothing, I tried every single option :/ It's never seen by GBLeo, while RafDroid (for example) correctly uses the ext3 partition.
This is my current setup:
MAGLDR 1.13
CWR 3.0.2.x on NAND
System partition: 220MB
Ext3 partition on sd card (2nd partition, label sd-ext): 1024MB
i bought a new memory card for my phone..... and im just wonderin if do i have to format in FAT 32 or just leave it and erase the files of a new memory card??
Thank you

If it's new, there's no real need to format. It is already formatted in FAT 32.
You could however partition the memory card within CWM Recovery to setup SWAP and ext4.
Hope that helps =)
Agree it should already be formatted for windows - I would just add:
You can apply the 4EXT extension easily enough in recovery - my personal favorite 4EXT touchcovery...
I would not use a swap file on this device - useful for my old MT3G but I wouldn't do it for this phone IMHO
I use SDFormatter (it's free) for formatting all my MicroSD cards. I had problems getting a 32 GB MicroSD card to be recognized on my MyTouch 4G and after formatting it with that program, no problems anymore

Alright, I've been around for awhile and still haven't really looked into this, but what exactly is swap and ext4? Like what are the benefits?
And also, I'm trying to find the differences between the 4ext touchcovery and clockworkrecovery other than themes and touch. What would you recommend and why?

Swap is a portion of your card (or hard drive for desktop) that the system will use almost like RAM - for frequently accessed files/information. This was very useful for the older phones that had little RAM but not really needed for newer phones. That swap will get 'thrashed' quite a bit too, and with a limited amount of read/writes per SD card I would not recommend it except on older phones.
ext4 is a file system and ext3 was better than ext2 etc... ext4 in a nutshell is faster, and more stable - lots of googling available on that one if you are interested in the fine details.
4ext recovery - has a couple of really nice features like md5 checksum check and a few others and the new touchcovery is so slick - no buttons needed at all, great UI and all the features of the original - I practically feel guilty using it! Try it - if you don't like it you can always go back ...
Hope that helps...

Yea, so swap is in other words Virtual Memory? When i had an iphone 3g, I used a VM mod and a couple others to speed it up cause it has very little RAM.
And I'm using 4ext touchcovery and I love the wipe all but sdcard function.
What are the benefits of partitioning your sdcard?

Yeah touchcovery is sweet and you are correct about swap being virtual memory.
For partitioning your card with 4EXT, I am no expert but I think stock Android expects FAT, and if you run windows you would not see 4EXT easily etc... but I use a 4EXT partition of 500 MB for Android, since it is faster, more stable etc... and android has no problems reading it since it is a *NIX derived OS and the more recent ROMs should take advantage of that partition format.
You can partition pretty easy in 4EXT touchcovery BTW ... not sure how it handles existing data so I would back up if you go that route...
Hi Guys,
A friend of mine has handed me a HD2 to install android on. I did it on a US version a couple of years ago. For the EU/International version if he wants a basic ICS or Jellybean rom whats the average system partition and cache size to use? I know it varies from rom to rom, but if I was to go for the NexusHD2 roms what would you recommend.
He also has a 8GB SD Card, so roughly what size should I partition that to? He would definitely rather a NAND rather than SD version. Then I guess once up and running it's just a case of using something like Apps2SD to get the apps on the SD card?
Thanks for the help
if it's eu, it's very hard, if not impossible, to install and run ics/jb roms on nand only. why not just go with dataonext? better than app2sd scripts, you could have 400mb system partition and 1-2gb or 512mb ext4 partition for data. that would be IMO very easy and beter solution than nand only on eu.

you can install a stock ICS or JB rom with non extra apps inside. The problem with EU and Nand install is the install of your apps. this apps is only in system/apps and with this install your phone is very slow and have reboots. for the EU HD2 is better the nativeSD or DataOnEXT install. for this install methods you must have a fast SD Card with two Partitions. the first is the FAT32/cluster default/primary and the second is the EXT4/cluster default/primary
