Well I would hate to jump on this prematurely but I've noticed today my 3G has been strong and seems to be working the way it should be. Wish I had another 3G phone to match it up to but I don't. Anyone else here notice better 3G, think maybe google quietly rolled out and OTA?
And Where is here? Mine has always been fine in Vegas!
phoenix, az
I doubt a device is gonna update itself without notifying
good point, but i haven't had solid 3G to speak of until today, had it all day.

its just 2.1 but day 2 and still strong 3g, either way im happy!
i noticed after the weekend of data outages, my 3G has been really solid since. both yesterday and today i listened to slacker throughout the entire work day without any hiccups...

Had my N1 since the 6th and never had 3G problems here in Phoenix; however, since Cyanogen added the "H" icon, I'd notice it would flash between 3G and H at random, and it 'does' seem to hold "H" longer now... interesting...
Well my polar clock is not FC'ing on any settings anymore, which is a bit odd...
I would assume though that you would get a notification if they did an update.
My polar clock isn't FC-ing either anymore. I seem to remember someone saying that it was date-dependent (the bug that caused the FC), so maybe it's just since Feb 1st.
My Polar Clock doesn't FC anymore either! And I tried it only yesterday, or two days ago and it was totally FC'ing. Wow. Something happened...
Possibly another time bug similar to the Droid Camera bug??
[Edit]: Actually, it may be related to the month sphere... Maybe it doesn't work at the end of the month
Are you guys talking about the FC's that we were getting by using one of the dynamic Polar Clocks?

Ah ye, I remember now. It was a programming bug that caused it to FC the whole of january.
An FOTA update is being out pushed imminently, but correct, it will always warn you prior to installing..

well let me start off by saying that I have read all of the threads from day one about the fluctuation issues but have never yet experienced it myself, until today.
I have never had the issue before but today when I woke up I turned on my phone after its charge, i have never turned it off during a charge before, and I am experiencing this problem now.
My question is, is it time to root and flash a new radio to the N1? I have put off rooting because I havent had a reason to yet.
Thanks in advance for the input.
Ps. i am not new to rooting so I aint scureedddd.
oopsieee wrong section, can a mod please move this to either General or Q&A!

thanks for moving mindfrost, i had a brainfart lol.
anyone with input? i'd much appreciate it. The fluctuation is still going on but its not such a big deal because I am usually on wifi. Should I just wait for a new OTA from google?

I don't see how these things could in any way be related...Who is your carrier? You may want to contact them and see if they are having issues with a local tower or have a tower out so are now experiencing a weaker 3G signal and thus bouncing.
I am on T-Mobile, trust me I was just as confused. I know that turning off a device while charging "shouldn't" have anything to do with fluctuating signal thats the only thing I did.

have you tried another radio (software) version? what version are you using now?
i am on ere27
my radio is 4.03.00.21_2
he's on stock too...I only have this problem when holding the phone. Herd its normal.
I just started experiencing the 3g problem too. Didn't have this problem before. Completely stock (unrooted) with the OTA update. I thought it could just be the weather or some temporary maintenance but I've been experiencing it for about 3 days now.
Southern California area.
This better get fixed, I bought this phone the day it came out.
This is totally wierd, I have had no problems whatsoever signal wise with my nexus. Actually I have had a significant increase in quality and signal coming from a Mytouch3G. I have none of the problems at all that are described with signal, screen or anything. Got lucky I guess.
@pongalong - thats about the same time I have been experiencing the problem. Its def not the weather here because it has been beautiful the past week, highs in the 70's but in Feb we had a colossal snow storm which knocked power out and I had great signal then, its so odd.
@sinister - I didnt have any problems whatsoever until about two days ago.
Matter the towers are being worked on... one day my signal was horrid only the next day to find out the upgraded the towers where I live....
Tmobiles great here in portland oregon..
Went about 45 miles out of my area and the problem seemed to disappear (although it seemed to be around when I was indoors - probably just due to interference). Hopefully they're just doing some work in my area like mentioned above.
Any improvement or updates from the OP?
Hopefully T-Mo is almost ready for 21Mb/s.
It seems to have somewhat went away..it still fluctuates but only where I am below 2 bars of 3g. I'm getting used to just switching to 2g only in low 3g areas. Then I get full edge usually. Kinda weird but ill just wait for an update I guess.
Anyone who tried one of the leaked Froyo's notice an improved data signal? I am getting 3G now in my office and home (most of the time), where before on my eclair builds I never would.
I don't recall reading about a change in the radio? Anyone else noticing this? It's not placebo...
Also, love the easter eggs in froyo.. lots of cool new features besides the obvious JIT compiler and Flash.
The first day I had my Froyo running, I had no data in my house whatsoever. However since then I now have connection but I would say it is the same that I had before I flashed to Froyo.
i noticed that it doesn't switch back and forth between edge and 3g at my work.

Heh, I always noticed you had edge in all your screenies. Which 2.2 you running?
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.
^ Onyx from TW. It's sad.. I live in one of the top 50 largest cities in the US... I would expect a better 3G signal. BUT, having it now helps... just did not expect the boost that froyo gave.
I definitely have better 3G data now.
I can finally drive all the way from home to work and be on the Skype on 3G and not a single hiccup ;-)
Well I live in Manhattan and get great coverage, except inside certain buildings than it's rediculous.

Skype works on Vibrant now?
I get 3g in my house all over now where it used to switch back and forth between 2g/3g... I don' think it's really more signal though. I think the threshholds of when it changes now might be a little different or something.
When I was running the macnut roms that had the data issues, I would set it to use 3g only, and it was able to get signal all over my house too, just didn't show any bars.
Anyone getting text messages from the future while on roaming? Is there a solution to fix this little probelm? I'd rather not have to use a 3rd party messaging app. I like the stock one. I'm running SRF 1.1.0.

It means that when he gets a text, it says its from a time later in the day. If he gets a text at 2p.m. the phone says he got it at 6 or 7 p.m.Usually only happens while roaming, and its a Samsung mms.apk problem, if you flash the aosp messaging, it doesn't have that problem.

Even while roaming, I only got a slew of "future" txts when I was out of my hometown...although it was the same time zone :-/
OTOH, I remember when it was New Year's Eve/Day with my old Touch Pro a few years back, and I got txts from 1/1/2013. I rejoiced in telling everyone that the Mayans were wrong and we wouldn't all die in the end times. :-D
respond back to that text from the future and ask the person for the result of the Game 2 Mavs vs Heat game. I would like to make me a few bets if ya know what I mean. ;P
I used to get these on my iphone lol but they would be from YEARS in the future and would be empty. ****ed with me for a bit. Ive never heard of anyone having this issue or even heard of the issue itself before. I just figured the iphone was a piece of **** later on lol

I have this problem quite often because I'm roaming at work. It happened on my old Hero as well. There are some apps in the market that have seemed to work, though they seemed hacky last I tried, and resigned to just live with it. Just now a search on the market revealed http://market.android.com/details?id=com.mattprecious.smsfix , which looks pretty good. Haven't tried it.

I was about to post about this before I read the entire thread. I had this same problem from day one with my Epic at work because the signal at my cube for either side isn't that great and I flip between Sprint & roaming on Verizon constantly without using Roam Control to force it to stay on Verizon (which is what I typically do since Verizon's signal strength is a little better comparatively where I sit).
Anyway, I discovered the SMS Time Fix app months ago and have been using it ever since...and it works *almost* flawlessly. I still get the occasional text that somehow slips past the app's resident process, but about 98% of the time it works perfectly and adjusts the timestamp on incoming texts. So I definitely suggest grabbing that and using it for anyone with this problem.

does anyone get SMS errors (like 107, 97, or any others)? Or "Radio interface resource shortage" errors?
I've been getting these for a week now since I got a refurbished phone. Called Sprint a half hour ago, and they reset something on their end that was supposed to help, but I just got an SMS error again, so apparently it didn't fix it. It's certainly not due to a lack of service, as I have full service. Profile and PRL are all updated. I haven't updated the android version yet due to the reports of bugs, and it not being rootable.
Any ideas? I can call and complain to Sprint again, and since this is my third Shift, I can get any other device, but I'd really rather not...I like the Shift lol
I only get SMS errors if I am texting too fast. But they still all go through.

mine seems that it drops data when a text is going, and then takes a very long time to reestablish the data connection, if it does at all

When I had stock 2.2 I was getting the same issues... I think its a sense thing... I am on nightly #124 now and I have absolutely no issues save for navigation. Then again ever since I went with AOSP over sense I've had no issues. If you want to stick with sense. Maybe try the RUU 2.2 or try the rooted GB update... unsure though

It's not sense, I know that for certain. The first two devices didn't have any service problems other than the occasional error popping up when I literally had no service while roaming
Maybe its just the one u have. Maybe like a bug or error. Try using the RUU. Maybe give it a fresh system. I've used the RUU and it doesn't have any issues. I'm just stabbing in the dark here.

tried that, twice. I rooted this one twice, put custom ROM's on, RUU'd a couple times, didn't fix it. I think if anything there's a problem with the antennas or the software controlling the interaction of the antennas. I'm getting another one on Tuesday, so hopefully that'll work better
Just shot in the dark maybe try flashing the old radio.

I haven't had my new phone in low signal areas yet, so I'm not sure. I know my Mom's shift gets the errors quite frequently when she's at home, where signal is very weak. But I rarely got them even there. I might be out there sometime in the next few days, so I'll have to check it out.
Okay, here's my problem. I've got my Samsung Epic up and running (finally), but for two annoying bugs: or it might be one bug with two parts.
One, the signal strength "wobbles" a lot, going from no bars (but still holding service) to almost full bars. I assumed at first that this is just a quirk of the preferred tower configuration around my home.
Part two is more annoying. Sometimes it will, apparently somewhat randomly, lose all signal, which prompts the phone to reboot. Actually it's not a TRUE reboot, it's just the half-reboot that happens when the Android shell crashes: return to boot animation, then reload everything. Often, it'll do this several times in a row. It was doing it horribly when I was running the AOSP version 4 ROM, so I flashed back to a semi-stock configuration (stock ROM plus ClockworkMod). But it's still doing it. Modem version is EC05, and I'm running on a Verizon MVNO. Can anyone offer suggestions?
Try updating your modem to the EI22 released modem and get on an EI22 ROM.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yeah, EI22 fixes most of the signal dropouts for me. Just update your modem.
On EH17 my bars would randomly go to 0 and data would drop out even though I'm parked on a repeater here at work, getting -76db signal (that's really, really good).
i just got a new (or probably refurb) phone from best buy after my original broke. (thank you black tie) and this new stock phone does this same stuff you are describing. this phone sucks! reboots, lock ups, bluetooth doesnt work, keyboard skips.. .what a joke.
so should i call sprint and try to get something other than an epic or go to best buy and have them order me another one? any suggestions?
Well, following the advice upthread I've gone ahead and installed the stock EI22 update for the Epic. We'll see how it turns out.

Black Tie is supposed to give you new phones. Keyboard skips are Samsung's error. Flash a custom ROM with the fixes implemented by the DEVs here.
Followup: after flashing the Sprint stock EI22 ROM, I'm still getting wacky signal strength fluctuations, but it's stopped resetting, which makes me happy. I'd be happier if I could get it to stick with the strong signal, but I'll live.
Try using an app like Network Info or Tasker to see if your phone is hopping towers while the signal is fluctuating. Maybe a PRL update will help.

Yes it should. Unfortunately the keyboard skips have yet to be addressed by Samsung. There is a maintenance update being worked on. Some people are still getting reboots with the new OTA for Gingerbread but not many. So maybe that will be addressed as well as the keyboard skips.

I'll try those--I was trying to use CellID Info for that purpose, but it hasn't reflected any changes at all between high signal and low signal. So far Network Info II isn't either, but we'll see. I did try a PRL update the other night, to no avail.

That's possible. God knows I'm out in the middle of nowhere, so quality of service probably isn't a high priority. I haven't seen it reflected in other Verizon devices I've looked at the last couple days, but then I haven't exactly been looking at them that closely.
My signal does seem a lot more consistent today--right now I'm stuck at 2-3 out of 6 bars, but it's holding that constantly with very little variation, less even than I would think was normal. Maybe it was a network problem after all and not just my device. That would be nice.
Edit: Looks like I spoke a little too soon, as I just had one complete signal dropout. But it's still better than it was.
That could be when they just swapped out amplifiers at the tower that was giving you trouble. Also it seems Sprint service is subject to a lot of dead zones. I got a big dead spot in my house.

I'm not on Sprint, it's flashed to a Verizon MVNO, so I'm on VZW towers.
Strangely, I've seen my AT&T Android phone lose signal too a couple times today--which is bizarre, because it almost never does that. AT&T around here is only 2G, and slow 2G at that, but the signal is very reliable. Just enough to make me wonder if something weird is going on locally.
In case anyone's still interested in this: it's still doing it, so it's pretty clearly the phone. However when I took it into a building where there's normally poor signal, it stopped doing it and held the stronger signal. Is it possible that because this is a Sprint radio, it's trying to default to 1900 MHz, instead of the stronger 850 signal?
