I've searched numerous forums/posts/threads for help, and I now come tail between legs, waiving the white flag! I give up! I need help!
I've noticed my download speeds have slowed dramatically over the past few weeks. What once was (4g) 4-5 down & 1-1.5 up, is now 1-1.5 down & 1 up. Real world experience has drawn me to these figures, but I've also confirmed similar speeds with speedtest. (Yes, I know speedtest isn't 100% accurate) I've tested speeds over several days, using the same tower. Each time, I was approximately 200 yards away, outside with a direct view of the tower, with full signal strength. Testing was done between 1 & 3 am. I used speedtest and downloaded the same pdf from my email to compile my unofficial info. Out of curiosity, I did the same tests on 3g and found almost identical results (slightly slower up speeds).
In my pursuit to find an answer, I've tried many things. I updated my PRL (01120). I found a post that showed how to increase 4g signal strength (-110) and increase refresh rate. I've called Sprint and had them check the tower (nothing was wrong per the CS rep). I've rebooted. I've toggled airplane mode. I've odin'd older and newer modems. So far, nothing has worked.
In one of the posts I read, I found a list of Sprint/Samsung's "#" codes. These allow you to view/change various things in your phone. I dialed ##786# and found my baseband ending in EE03 (Correlates with current modem). My wimax was EC04. I then dialed *#1234# and it showed samsung's firmware. My PDA ended in EB13 and my phone s: was EE03.
My frustrations were only exacerbated when my buddy on T-mobile stood next to me and pulled constant 10+ speeds!
I've read numerous posts from people in other markets pulling speeds from 7-12... I'd settle for my 4-5 again! Side note: this is a valley wide (Las Vegas) problem for me... I chose to focus testing on 1 particular tower that had given me good speeds in the past.
So...
1: Am I effin crazy? Should I be happy to have crappy 4g because many have none?
2: Could it be a combination of rom/modem/kernel that is causing my issues?
3: Could the discrepancies between the build modes (or what appears to be) I got from the "#" codes be an issue?
4: Is sprint BS'n me? Could they actually have 4g issues and that be the cause?
5: Is there anything else I can do/try to improve my signal?
I know slow speeds aren't the end of the world, but I have a job that allows me to play on my phone quite a bit. I always use wifi at home, but would love to be able to use 4g @ work again.
Thanks in advance for any help! I know it was a long read! I just want my epic back... I can't fathom going back to my POS hero! Lol!

I have no 4g and get .05mbps to .25mbps on 3g. I just want a consistent .6mbps .

You are not alone in this. I do not have an explanation but there have been several threads here and over at android central of people on Sprint complaining of slow speeds and whatnot. Some people believe that a bunch of roaming agreements Sprint had with some other carriers have dropped off over the past few months and many people that once had great service are now getting crappy service. Since you specifically are complaining of 4G speeds this may not be the case for you, but you certainly are not alone when it comes to people all over the country recently complaining of slower speeds overall.
Mine just went back to normal levels late yesterday, otherwise I can also vouch for about 1.5 dl/ul speeds all weekend.
ee03
try installing a different modem from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123103 try ef02 first
My speed has been **** lately also. Even pandora has begun skipping. If this doesn't improve, I will not be renewing my contract when my phone upgrade is available.
ee03
I had problems on the ee03 modem at first when i went to ef02 then auto updated to ef10 my 3g speeds increased to a point in which I could play netflix consistently 4g improved,, also use ##3282# to change 4g connection times.
Did you think to try an official rom/modem instead of the leak you are currently running? Like EC05 for example?

I am in SoCal and used to get 7000-8000 bpbs upload speeds and lately they have been topping at 4000. The upload speeds are consistently in the 1400s. EC05 modem..can't explain it. Its like its being capped

Yeah... I was on EC05 when my problems started. I went on to the next one in hopes that things would improve.
This is driving me nuts! If there's something I could fix, then I'd love to figure it out. If its sprint that is sucking right now, then I'd at least have an answer.
I'm gonna odin in different modems later today and see if any perform better than another. Fingers crossed!

This seems to be on the right track to me. Do you know anyone else who has an Epic (or any other 4g phone for that matter) preferably running stock? See if they come up with similar speeds at the same place at the same time.
Barring that, I would try to put your phone back to bone stock Froyo and see what you get. Not sure how fluent you are with this, but just boot into CWM and backup. Then use Odin to get to stock Froyo. Don't install any apps, or do anything else to it. Test it out on 4G for a while in the same time and place. If that does not work, try some of the 4G fixes listed in these forums.
If you get decent 4G speeds with this configuration, you know it is something specific to your phone (and more specifically to your software) and you can restore the backup and try replacing just the modem or other tweaks. If you cant get decent speeds running stock, then just restore your backup and curse Sprint and wait

Personally I have had such fluctuation that I think Sprint is holding out. I'm sure that they have the capability of limiting data connectivity and speeds and I have heard rumors of them doing this in the past. I wouldnt put anything past Sprint at this point. Maybe give them a call and ask then why you are paying a "premium data" charges with the data speeds are no better than with the Hero. I had some better expierences with my old Moment before I changed to the Epic.

I dont think "official" is the answer. I just got my dad a brand new Epic and it's completely stock and it's slower than mine and I'm on EF02/EF10 GB. I may do a side by side video of the two phones and see just how much of a difference there is.

None of my family/friends have 4g on sprint... kids are rocking some POS sammy sliders I got for free, and the woman has a BB Curve. Maybe I'll stop into the local store and see if I can mess with the demo phones.
I thought about going back to bone stock, but I'm gonna go the easy route for now and run through a few modems. If that fails, then back we go!

After you update your modem go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925898 and update your 4g and 3g connection times. Worked for me.
So here's an update...
First... thanks for all the help/suggestions!
I had already increased my signal strength and refresh rates to no avail. I tried several different modems out and all had the same results. Averaging about 1.5 up and 1 down. Given these findings, I figured it prob wasn't me or my phone. I called CS again, and this time the rep confirmed that the tower in my area was the problem. I asked if it could be a city wide issue and she couldn't confirm this. Being a paramedic, I know most of our zip codes, and they all have issues!
So... final conclusion is: 4g in Vegas sucks right now! Boo!

cell phone slots... Good Luck to u guys in the west.
I dont know if it was my area <gotta account for variable change, movie 21 voice> but every since i switched to ACS ICS, Legendary Rom, and currently the Thunderhawk Rom E122 version, my 3g speeds has been ultra slow in my area. I like all 3 roms but cant deal with the modem, which i believe controls 3g speeds. I guess what im asking is..can i keep an ice cream rom or an e122 based rom but change my modem? If i do..does it has to be one like eh17 or can can it be ec05? What do i risk if anything? Would i lose features such as overscroll glow? Thanks in advance guys!!!!

you can change to any modem you want really. I was running EG22 modem on EC05.
Check out this thread to get whichever modem you want and flash it via odin. There are some videos in the thread if you are unfamiliar with the process

I have the same 3g speed problem and noticed my 4g is about half of what it used to be. Can't believe more people haven't mentioned it. I'm not sure what to do. wipe and reinstall. or an easier solution to this ultraslow speed especially in 3g.
UPDATE: Assumed all night that the recent drop in speedtest results of 150kb/s 3g or 3M/s 4g were due to a change in the kernel or ACS ICS V5 rom. I used to get 1M+/s on 3g. Although I am not 100% sure. I believe that it's not the phone at all. The recent speed drops just coincides with reports of other sprint customers getting poor 3g speeds. Many threads from iphone users who are stuck without 4g can be found online. Their reported 3g speeds are about the same as what I have been getting for the past few days.
I wonder if it's the increased # of iphone and other users overall on the same towers causing this? any ideas? should I be frustrated at he rom or at sprint for successfully signign up more more 3g hogging iphones to my community? Anaheim, CA btw.

I've been seeing some pretty crappy speeds myself lately. Maybe it's due tot he GB rollout? I'm sure that bogs down the network quite a bit when they do an OTA. I have noticed speeds gradually getting better over the past week.
I have tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346680
Don't really notice a difference but it's worth a shot.

I also tried that data speed increase zip file. At least for now, it didn't seem to help or hurt the speeds. Extremely sluggish 3g speeds today as well. 15kb/sec.. it's worse than 1X.
My 3g speeds are pretty crappy here in SLC too, really really bad, max I have got was 200 on 3g... 3g supercharger usually gets me up over 600 max over a Mb, but even with that turned on it is dismal at best. Tried this fix too, and it didn't do much better. I am pretty sure that it is Sprint...

Actually, it is not just me, I had my buddy test his 3g on his EVO 3D, and his was just as craptacular as mine, if not more so, and my 4g speed is also about half of where it should be, I get 1.5 MB when I used to get between 3 and 5...
3g speeds for me have always been horrible.. most times i can't even load a web page.. got the ACS ICS v5 and it was a step up from EC05, and uses a ton less battery, but still miserably slow compared to other carriers.
Usually the 3g supercharger helps, but not today. It might be location.

Well, as always, thanks for everyones response. Misery loves company..or at least conformation lol. Matter of fact..my speeds did slow down when GB started rolling out. Thats why i had to account for coincidence when i switched roms cause i figured other factors could have been involved. Im in a small city in Tx of 110,000 so its nice to see that other ppl countrywide are having the same problem. I was thinking goin ee03 for the first time but since i switched back to eco5 <thunderhawk rom semi official> unless im being positive..it seems faster 3g wise...hmmm
my 3g w/ ei22 has been really wild. i'll sometimes only get about 200kb...then sometimes over 1000bk...then back to 400kb. very inconsistent.
I myself noticed that my upload speed using the Airave has increased drastically.
Download is a noticeably slower (25% or so). WiFi is my go-to when at home now.
My buddy on Verizon LTE was pulling down a supposed consistent 37mbps a couple of months ago, only to be at a very inconsistent 20ish at the same exact spot and time of night.
My d/l and u/l speeds with EI22 are pretty much the same as with EC05 - nothing to write home about but acceptable (and 4G compensates - when I can connect to it). Am happier with GB because overall the phone performance has been snappier, which I attribute to better under-hood resource management of GB. FWIW, when I tested VZW network speeds at home with wifey's Droid 2 Global, they were slightly faster but very comparable to Sprint's. Staying with Sprint for a while longer.
Okay, here's my problem. I've got my Samsung Epic up and running (finally), but for two annoying bugs: or it might be one bug with two parts.
One, the signal strength "wobbles" a lot, going from no bars (but still holding service) to almost full bars. I assumed at first that this is just a quirk of the preferred tower configuration around my home.
Part two is more annoying. Sometimes it will, apparently somewhat randomly, lose all signal, which prompts the phone to reboot. Actually it's not a TRUE reboot, it's just the half-reboot that happens when the Android shell crashes: return to boot animation, then reload everything. Often, it'll do this several times in a row. It was doing it horribly when I was running the AOSP version 4 ROM, so I flashed back to a semi-stock configuration (stock ROM plus ClockworkMod). But it's still doing it. Modem version is EC05, and I'm running on a Verizon MVNO. Can anyone offer suggestions?
Try updating your modem to the EI22 released modem and get on an EI22 ROM.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yeah, EI22 fixes most of the signal dropouts for me. Just update your modem.
On EH17 my bars would randomly go to 0 and data would drop out even though I'm parked on a repeater here at work, getting -76db signal (that's really, really good).
i just got a new (or probably refurb) phone from best buy after my original broke. (thank you black tie) and this new stock phone does this same stuff you are describing. this phone sucks! reboots, lock ups, bluetooth doesnt work, keyboard skips.. .what a joke.
so should i call sprint and try to get something other than an epic or go to best buy and have them order me another one? any suggestions?
Well, following the advice upthread I've gone ahead and installed the stock EI22 update for the Epic. We'll see how it turns out.

Black Tie is supposed to give you new phones. Keyboard skips are Samsung's error. Flash a custom ROM with the fixes implemented by the DEVs here.
Followup: after flashing the Sprint stock EI22 ROM, I'm still getting wacky signal strength fluctuations, but it's stopped resetting, which makes me happy. I'd be happier if I could get it to stick with the strong signal, but I'll live.
Try using an app like Network Info or Tasker to see if your phone is hopping towers while the signal is fluctuating. Maybe a PRL update will help.

im sure you are right, but doesn't anyone think it should just work from the store? i know its a novel idea but i think top notch phones should work right out of the box.

Yes it should. Unfortunately the keyboard skips have yet to be addressed by Samsung. There is a maintenance update being worked on. Some people are still getting reboots with the new OTA for Gingerbread but not many. So maybe that will be addressed as well as the keyboard skips.

I'll try those--I was trying to use CellID Info for that purpose, but it hasn't reflected any changes at all between high signal and low signal. So far Network Info II isn't either, but we'll see. I did try a PRL update the other night, to no avail.

That's possible. God knows I'm out in the middle of nowhere, so quality of service probably isn't a high priority. I haven't seen it reflected in other Verizon devices I've looked at the last couple days, but then I haven't exactly been looking at them that closely.
My signal does seem a lot more consistent today--right now I'm stuck at 2-3 out of 6 bars, but it's holding that constantly with very little variation, less even than I would think was normal. Maybe it was a network problem after all and not just my device. That would be nice.
Edit: Looks like I spoke a little too soon, as I just had one complete signal dropout. But it's still better than it was.
That could be when they just swapped out amplifiers at the tower that was giving you trouble. Also it seems Sprint service is subject to a lot of dead zones. I got a big dead spot in my house.

I'm not on Sprint, it's flashed to a Verizon MVNO, so I'm on VZW towers.
Strangely, I've seen my AT&T Android phone lose signal too a couple times today--which is bizarre, because it almost never does that. AT&T around here is only 2G, and slow 2G at that, but the signal is very reliable. Just enough to make me wonder if something weird is going on locally.
In case anyone's still interested in this: it's still doing it, so it's pretty clearly the phone. However when I took it into a building where there's normally poor signal, it stopped doing it and held the stronger signal. Is it possible that because this is a Sprint radio, it's trying to default to 1900 MHz, instead of the stronger 850 signal?
Hi all,
I am fairly new to modding and would like to ask a quick question that may be simple for some of you.
I have a MT4G "Glacier" and I did some steps found on this forum to root and install a custom firmware on my phone. For the past two weeks, I must have installed about 28 ROMS. Yeah, I know... I have too much free time.
Here is the issue. I have not found a single rom that can do it all. With some roms, my 4G speed don't work. With others, my screen flickers too. The last one I installed, doesn't have sense. No matter what I do, I can't get a rom where my 4G speed works, which I can't live without since I use my phone as hotspot all the time.
The rom that I like the most was [ROM] [ICS] Glacier_One_V_1.3 (9/24/2012) because it has BEATS audio, is based on ICS and it has sense 4.0 which looks and works great. I would love to find one that has all the bells and whistles like this one, but where I can still use my 4G speeds and my screen is not flashing all the time.
I understand that the RADIO is what controls the WIFI, cell signal, etc. Can I update the radio, for one that currently works under Gingerbread into this rom without messing anything up?
If so, how will I go about it and what things do I need to get? Please keep in mind that I already flashed back to stock and I am very comfortable with flashing now, but I don't know much about what goes inside the ROM itself.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Manny
Let me jump in before Jack shreds you for ignorance. The radio IS NOT part of your ROM and has nothing to do with your wifi, gps, the space station or anything other than cell reception (as much as software can). Changing it can be beneficial, but is also dangerous. A failed install means a permanently broken phone. Explain what you mean about not getting 4G.

Appreciate you saving my skin there. Sorry for my ignorance.
What I meam by no 4g speed is, my signal bar on the top right of the phone, almost always reads 4g and get fast browsing speeds on my phone. I can tether my internet to my laptop and it runs great on my stock Ginger.
The moment I go to custom ROM, I can only get 3g and is not just display issues, because the speed is slow based on speedtest.net.
Makes sense now?

Hmm, well, I'm not aware of speed issues on ICS, at least not anymore. However, if you're having issues with it you might try a Gingerbread ROM like Android Revolution HD or Insert Coin.
If you plan on sticking with ICS, you might try the "3G Hacks" in Pimp my ROM. 3G and 4G run off the exact same radio, but a value or two in the ROM may, I repeat MAY, affect the speed. What kind of speed differences are you seeing? Are you comparing these at a similar time of day?
Also, holy crap. You said CFW. I haven't seen that term since my old PSP hacking days. Good times.

I am comparing at relatively the same timed, days and locations. Office versus home, etc.
I will flash againg ICS and test your recommendations. Thanks for your help.
Compare 10 runs back-to-back, same time, same day, same place. That would be a good basis to discuss something.
For all the rest: no ICS ROM will work properly for you. If you want stability - drop to Gingerbread.
About the radio - estallings15 already answered you. You're looking in the wrong places.
"4G" mark on the signal bar means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on this phone. 4G means something where "4G" stands for "LTE", which is a different set of bands and different transceivers. This phone doesn't have LTE, nor does T-Mobile AFAIK. So it's just an icon. But - make sure you have "H" showing instead on custom ROMs (HSDPA mode). It should show up when the phone starts actively using data.
This makes perfect sense. I really appreciate your prompt response and suggestions.
Back to flashing.

I've read up on this and understand it is supposed to be normal, but man does it make my phone so much worse. Every single time a page loads it has to switch from 3G to H. My reception seems like it sucks so bad because of this. Sometimes it doesn't switch. I get good bars everywhere I go, but it feels like I have terrible reception.
I've never understood radios and such. I'm rooted with the stock rom. Would this be better if I tried cyanogenmod with a different radio? There has to be a fix for this issue.
If you solve this for me, I'll kiss you through the internet.
I don't think kissing anyone over the internet would make them want to help you any more
Its how the phone works, its supposed to switch to 3G to H. H comes on when data is more active.
What radio are you using?

the bars are for your gsm radio, telephone calls. they dont give you an idea on data speeds. do a speed test to see how good of a data connection you have.

I knew the bars are for phone calls, but I'm in the city of Chicago and have a hard time believing my data is as bad as it seems. I'll have plenty of times where it shows 3G connection and doesn't switch to H, therefore no data comes through. I've had plenty of times where I didn't believe I wasn't getting data, so I reset my phone and sure enough - data!
I do believe something could be wrong with my specific phone. I might need to try a full reset or flash cyanogenmod. I just didn't want to do that. Especially without checking with you genius's beforehand!

How can I check radio version?
I'm running 4.2.2. Baseband version M9615A-CEFWMAZM-2.0.1700.48 Kernel version 3.4.0-perf-g7ce11cd [email protected] #1
Build number JDQ39
Sorry for the delayed response. It is making me wait 5 minutes between posts, even though I'm not a new user and this is MY post. I haven't posted much, but I'm not new Maybe the mods will see this and lift my restriction

The radio is .48.. Baseband is Radio. You can go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087227 and try out other radio to see if you get better reception.
If you're in a TMO 4G LTE area you can try activating LTE to see if you'd like it any more.

I can do that, but I'll first have to figure out how to do it. For some reason my drivers say they don't work and it won't let me flash clockwork mod. I was going to make another post about it after I figured this out. Do you think radio could be the issue?
Also, I am on Tmobile, but I thought LTE didn't really work since it was ATT band 4 or something and only very specific areas had it?

Well, I just found out my APN was the one used when you are on LTE. I changed it to the non LTE version and will test over the next few days. If that was my problem, I'm going to be upset at the Tmobile lady who put in that info.
Please do let us know if it's any better after using the epc APN.
If you flash to the .33 radio, the LTE will turn on and it's very good at holding a data connection. It's just when it's not available and my phone connects to hspa+. I have similar problems as you. My signal indicator works great and its blue but no internet. I'm wondering if i'll need to keep switching apns. I hope not.

Hmm. Some good points. I'll let you know in a few days. If it works better, then I might just leave it. It is interesting that you are in Chicago and LTE works. Makes me want to try it. I'll see how this goes first.

Well, I did my commute this morning and there really was no change. It could be a combination of poor data reception areas and slow switching. I'd like to try to flash a new radio, but I don't know how. I can start a new thread about this, but I'll at least mention my problem here. I installed the Nexus 4 Toolkit and went through all the steps to make sure the drivers were installed correctly and such. I did this a long time ago when I rooted the phone. But something is wrong and it doesn't let me flash clockworkmod. It tells me to go through the steps again, which I have tried.
Is there a way to flash a new radio without clockwordmod?

I've been tempted to try messing with lte on my nex 4 as well...live in chicagoland...just worried about how good the coverage is and how well the phone would perform outside lte coverage since I drive all over the tri state area and need my phone to be stable for work.

Lte is amazing in Chicago but not as strong in Chicagoland. However, hspa+ is garbage in Chicago but better in Chicago land.
As for cwm, I prefer twrp. You can just download goo manager from the app store and it will install twrp for you. As far as I know you need to use a custom Rom that supports the older radios or else your calling might mess up. I use aokp.

Well, I tried to use goo manager to install aokp. It seemed like it would work, but nothing happened when I flashed it. It reset and seemed like it was installing something, then I rebooted with no change. Strange.

Just wanted to let you know... I flashed Cyanogenmod and the 33 radio. Everything is so much better. Connection is quicker when switching, but also the 4G is fast! I should have done this a while ago. Been testing for 2 days. I'm in the city, so not sure about the burbs.

I actually tried that a few weeks ago, before I knew what I was doing. I wasn't able to flash it because I didn't have a custom recovery. I'm glad I went to CyanogenMod though. It seems to be faster and there are little things that make it better than stock.

Yeah I was running paranoid android for awhile, currently running stock for the 4.3 update, contemplating cm 10.2 when that gets solid or PA again once they get everything sorted out from the 4.3 hijinks.

Yeah CM has a lot of nice additions, Paranoid is pretty slick...been a fan of that one on multiple devices. It's built around swapping ui dpi...so you can set your phone to act like a phablet or tablet per app...ie...make gmail look like it does on your tablet on your phone. Let's you drop out the soft keys and replace them with a pop up slide wheel/etc and has a lot of the AOSP and CM features like the quick notification toggles etc.
