A Few Questions... - Nexus One General

1) How do I put a shortcut on my Homescreen which links to the combined mail box? I can only see how I link to one mailbox (Also, can I have gmail in the combined mail box?)
2) Is there no vibration mode? I hold down power on my Hero I could flick it into vibration only. The N1 just has silent?
3) Has anyone ported over the 'people widget' from SenseUI? I used to love having them on my homescreen. Maybe there's a suitable replacement on the market?
4) Does no-one else use comma when texting?!?! Why do I have to go to additional characters to use a comma. I must use 2 or 3 each text!
5) In the news widget, how do the custom topics work? I would love US sports news (I'm in the UK) or more specifically NFL news. How can I set that up?
6) Does the N1 have no support for Groups in Contacts? If I create a contact I can't seem to assign it to a group? Also, I can't view or text people in a group Again, maybe there's an 'app for that' on the market?

With the phone unlocked lower the volume to the mininum and voila, vibration mode
If you press the volume down again in vibration mode, you silence the phone.

Try to install Smart Keyboard, the comma is a stand-alone key in that keyboard.

If you don't use the voice input stuff, disable it, and you will see the comma where the mic icon was on the default keyboard view/layout.

Technically, you can organize your contacts into groups and this is done via your gmail account. The phone however displays them only alphabetically, though you can choose which groups to include. They are searchable though.

2) Once in silent mode, hit volume up once. There's also a couple i click wigets on the market to turn on vibrate mode.
4) press and hold the . key, it'll bring upa popup with common symbols.

If you don't use voice input (i don't) then disabled it in the keyboard settings. You'll get a comma instead of the microphone

You can long-press the period and other punctuation will popup, including the comma.

Tap on the news widget to bring up the news "app". Then tap on menu, settings, news settings, select news topics, custom topic and enter your own search string. While you are there, uncheck any news topics you don't need or want.

Ahh, cool. I didn't know that was an actual search term, I thought it was just a title. I've added NFL and also Android and it works awesome, thanks.

Good idea on Android as a search term. I also added "Nexus One" and that has been helpful, though often it is "old news" compared to what I read on this forum by the time I get around to browsing it on my phone...

what about editing the lock screen so that when you slide the bar on the right, instead of going into silent, it goes into vibrate?

A better skin/program for phone and contacts?

My problem with my MDA Vario is mainly searching contacts. It's very fiddly normally and a copplete nightmare when driving. I really dont want to have to take the pen out just to make a call.
What are my options? Any better software/skinds around? Or is there an option i am missing that could make it easier?
Thanks
PS, i dont want to use vioce dialing because its completely crap on this model with its poor audio capabilities.
I'm pretty happy with voice dialing. I agree it is unsafe to find contacts while driving, but I find that if I enunciate distinctly both when recording and when finding, I get pretty close to 100% success with voice dialing.
i am also interested in an input method or a contact skin to make contacts easily browsable while driving ---
this would be one of the main reasons for keeping also a nokia 6630 besides the wizard.
The main fact is that they are to small to press with a finger, any way of making them larger?

Probably already mentionedbut I found this by accident.
If you press the 'Contacts' button, the contacts are listed alphabetically.
Assuming you want someone beginning with 'P', instead of trying to press the tiny 'p' button, simply scroll down by holding the down button, but keep it pushed like fast scrolling.
Keep it pressed and after a few seconds, a large pop up appears with the Letters in it, A,B,C etc.
Hold it until 'P' appears, let go, and you are at 'P'
Seect your contact and dial.
Sorry if this is old news.
voice dialling is the best answer cause i am driving about 10.000 km /month because of my business, holding down the down arrow is also hard to select a single contact, instead u can use smartskey to use the volume controller button act like page down.. 8)

auto contact recognition in dialer

One thing I miss from my windows phone was the ability to open the dialer and start typing a contacts name using the dialer keypad and having it auto sort for the contact. are there any apps that add this feature?
I want to just hit the phone button then start typing the contact on the keypad and have it bring them up rather than going to contacts, then searching then choosing the contact, then choosing to call them,..
When you open contacts, you can hold the menu key down for a couple seconds, which brings up the keyboard. Then you can start typing a contacts name, and it starts narrowing down the list.
That's a start thanks. I am only two day into android and have many tricks to learn. Would still love to see it work in the dialer as well though.

What you're hoping for only works in SenseUI. Being new to Android, you just need to remember that different OS' do things differently. You'll get used to it soon, and it'll become second nature for you.
That was a bummer for me too, so I've opened a thread yesterday on this ... the best solution I found was using aContacts from marketplace.. it's very good and configurable.
It wont work keeping the menu pressed for showing the keyboard and looking for a contact in the Dialer screen. @uansari1, have you tried that? or are you speaking just by "knowledge" ?

You can actually use a similar trick, in any app, including right on the home screen. Just press the search key, and start typing the contacts name. No need to open Contacts first.

I have only tried using the keyboard in the Contacts screen, not the Dialer screen. I have my most frequently called contacts set as favorites, and calling non-favorites from time to time isn't a big deal for me.

Ok... all I said was holding menu will work in CONTACTS. I don't use the dialer screen unless I'm calling a number that's not in my Contacts.

You can try aContacts (free) from the market. It has this T9 dialpad that search the contacts and you can set it up to open this T9 when open the app. You can also customize the T9 a lot, check the settings in aContacts.

+1 This is a great feature, I can dial from any home screen (essentially)
Alternatively.
Long click on the search even on the home screen and it starts voice recognition.
Just say your contacts name or something like "Directions to Castle Street"
God this phone never ceases to amaze..
ok a couple things. I tried out acontacts, cool idea but it doesn't work with exchange contacts so it it doesn't do anything for me, hopefully later it will handle all phone contacts.
holding menu to bring up the keypad in contacts works well but its annoying that it doesn't clear the text input after you select the person because the next time you go into contacts you then have to bring up the keyboard and delete the text you typed in.

CLIQ gets added button functionality 01/28 through OTA

http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/MOTOR...available-STILL-1-5-though/td-p/304863/page/2
There was an OTA update to the CLIQ today, which was taken down after 15 minutes. Reports say this added functionality to their home button as such:
There is also a new option to double-click home button to launch, contact, voice search, etc... it's under Application Settings
Click to collapse
As for the double tap on the home screen, you can now set that as a shortcut. So if you press the home key twice, it will open up a certain function of the phone. Like take you to your contacts or open something else. By default it opens up google voice search.

No you can't customize the Double Tap. It is located under Settings - Application Settings and gives you the choices of Voice Search, Messaging, Dialer, Map, Contact and Camera

Is there any chance that something like this can be either a) ported over, or if it's not possible, b) developed for the Nexus One? (Basically if it is possible to add button functionality using the standard SDK tools?)
And even better, edited/hacked so as to allow home button double-tap to launch ANY app? (And even add double tap functionality for the other buttons?)
I don't see this working too well with capacitive buttons, tbh.
double tap on track ball
I wish there is a way to have double tab on he track ball to launch the dialer or to my favorite contacts. It would make it easy for making phone calls.

That too!
The reason I ask if this is even possible to develop using the standard SDK tools is because I've been searching and searching and searching and searching over the past year with my G1 for some app on the Market that adds or alters button functionality. To date, there is not a *SINGLE* app that does this for *ANY* Android phone.
Until yesterday's update of course. Finally!!!
Is this something that ONLY Motorola (and other carriers) can do?
Personally, I would love to see a mod in spare parts or something that would make it so that all of the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the screen on the Nexus would require a double-tap to be activated. This would help us avoid brushing up against them accidentally when not meaning to. Granted, it would take a little bit of getting used to double-tapping them to make them work, but I'm sure some people would appreciate and use such a mod. I'm talking about a purely optional mod that you would not have to have turned on (but could via Spare Parts) and would be off to keep the button behavior stock by default.

i guess the longevity of the trackball is low, at least it is on my blackberry. if you are onto this, mate, then, maybe, it could be either dblpress or longpress - to chose from?

Hah, different strokes for different folks. I wouldn't use that, but that's exactly why it should be customizable.
Can any Android developers comment on this?

Hell yeah! Now I wonder what it would take to get a back button long press?
I emailed the developer to see if a Back button long press was possible. His answer:
It is not possible to override function of back button.

[Q] CM7 keyboard enable smileys

Hello,
Is there a way to enable smileys on the default CM7 keyboard (instead of the enter key). For example in the Gtalk app there is a smiley option, but I would like to have it by default everywhere (facebook, messages etc.) - any way to do this?
Cheers...
Wasn't it always like that? Have you enabled another keyboard? I had searched high and low for a keyboard which removed the smiley key and brought back the Enter Key for the Messaging App, and only about 2-3 weeks back I found it.
Well, since I've flashed CM7 I haven't installed any other keyboard. I also haven't fiddled with any keyboard settings. So I'm quite puzzled that I have the smiley button only in Gtalk and messages (sorry I was wrong in my first post, there IS a smiley button in messages). However, I would like to have it also in Gmail and pretty much any other app - for example Facebook or its alternative Friendcaster.
Any idea how to enable it?
Not without any 3rd party app (Also, I have no idea which 3rd party keyboard does this). The default Gingerbread keyboard is context sensitive, i.e. - for a fixed set of apps, it will show the smiley key, and, for another fixed set of apps, it will show the enter key.
Editing should be possible if you don't wish to go for the Enter key, but, are all your GMail E-Mails only 1 line messages? (Because, till date, all I have seen, you can either get the Smiley key OR the enter key, not both) I find it difficult to live without it in the messaging app itself, leave along Gmail and browser.
Anyway, to state again, editing the keyboard should be possible, but it needs technical know-how, and I can't help you on that.
Well you have a point there, that writing a mail without enter would be quite a problem ;-) Anyway, I guess I'll have to stick with writing smileys the long way (using "." long press) ;-)
Thanks for clarifying the issue.
Cheers...

One way to go around that is by making the smiley (or smiley menu) appear afther a long press on the enter button. There is a keyboard on the market ("keyboard from android 2.3") which does that, in the gui of (as the name says) the android 2.3 keyboard.

Customising the Google Now shortcut menu?

So you know how when you hold down on the home button and that semi-circle menu appears with Google Now....is there any way of adding your own shortcuts to that because it seems like you should be able to, and they've missed a trick if that feature isn't included. Anyone know?

As far as I can find, there is no such capability. I think the "ring" only shows up as a visual cue to tell you to slide up to activate GNow.
check out some custom roms and you can change the ring, but as far as I know there aren't any apps that would do it on a stock nexus
I wish they had added this, why wouldn't they?
Google make some ridiculous decisions.....
