So you know how when you hold down on the home button and that semi-circle menu appears with Google Now....is there any way of adding your own shortcuts to that because it seems like you should be able to, and they've missed a trick if that feature isn't included. Anyone know?

As far as I can find, there is no such capability. I think the "ring" only shows up as a visual cue to tell you to slide up to activate GNow.
check out some custom roms and you can change the ring, but as far as I know there aren't any apps that would do it on a stock nexus
I wish they had added this, why wouldn't they?
Google make some ridiculous decisions.....

There was an OTA update to the CLIQ today, which was taken down after 15 minutes. Reports say this added functionality to their home button as such:
There is also a new option to double-click home button to launch, contact, voice search, etc... it's under Application Settings

As for the double tap on the home screen, you can now set that as a shortcut. So if you press the home key twice, it will open up a certain function of the phone. Like take you to your contacts or open something else. By default it opens up google voice search.

No you can't customize the Double Tap. It is located under Settings - Application Settings and gives you the choices of Voice Search, Messaging, Dialer, Map, Contact and Camera

Is there any chance that something like this can be either a) ported over, or if it's not possible, b) developed for the Nexus One? (Basically if it is possible to add button functionality using the standard SDK tools?)
And even better, edited/hacked so as to allow home button double-tap to launch ANY app? (And even add double tap functionality for the other buttons?)
I don't see this working too well with capacitive buttons, tbh.
double tap on track ball
I wish there is a way to have double tab on he track ball to launch the dialer or to my favorite contacts. It would make it easy for making phone calls.

That too!
The reason I ask if this is even possible to develop using the standard SDK tools is because I've been searching and searching and searching and searching over the past year with my G1 for some app on the Market that adds or alters button functionality. To date, there is not a *SINGLE* app that does this for *ANY* Android phone.
Until yesterday's update of course. Finally!!!
Is this something that ONLY Motorola (and other carriers) can do?
Personally, I would love to see a mod in spare parts or something that would make it so that all of the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the screen on the Nexus would require a double-tap to be activated. This would help us avoid brushing up against them accidentally when not meaning to. Granted, it would take a little bit of getting used to double-tapping them to make them work, but I'm sure some people would appreciate and use such a mod. I'm talking about a purely optional mod that you would not have to have turned on (but could via Spare Parts) and would be off to keep the button behavior stock by default.

i guess the longevity of the trackball is low, at least it is on my blackberry. if you are onto this, mate, then, maybe, it could be either dblpress or longpress - to chose from?

Hah, different strokes for different folks. I wouldn't use that, but that's exactly why it should be customizable.
Can any Android developers comment on this?
I found one! It's called Button Shortcut in the market. Great App!

Perfect!

Hell yeah! Now I wonder what it would take to get a back button long press?
I emailed the developer to see if a Back button long press was possible. His answer:
It is not possible to override function of back button.

Well that's a bummer! I do like this lite app Button Shortcut at least for a Dialer launch button!
since there is no phone/talk button, like on the g1, will we have to go to the home screen to use the dialer? Or is there another way?
i remember seeing a tiny app that puts a shortcut to the dialer in the notification bar, can't remember the name though ...
EDIT: try "bar control"
All seven of the home screens have a phone button at the bottom, so you're never more than two button presses from the phone. That said, I know it's possible to reassign a long press of the search button in Android, so it may be possible to map that to the dialer but I don't know for sure.
I guess it's not that big of a deal, once you get used to it, but I'm just so used to my mt3g.
It' gonna take awhile
I'll have to get used to it too. I've owned many Treos and WM phones, all of which had hardware send and end buttons. It's a first for me, but it's just one extra key press so it shouldn't be too bad. The bigger change for me is that this will be my first smartphone without a hardware QWERTY keyboard.
Also, I found this app which also adds phone and/or contacts to the notification bar: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.application.dialeratbar2

Has anyone figured out where these default settings are located so we can get this stupid thing off of the dock bar?
lol tell me about it. Can't wait to get that damned thing off there. It will probably be doable but probably with a custom rom I'm guessing? Hopefully it can be done somehow for those that don't want to flash roms, etc. Good question though
I just wish I could find the file that sets that button. I've been tearing apart rosie and everything else that looks like its related and going through xml after xml. Just haven't found anything yet... Looks like all the standard sense stuff is there, it's just overridden by t-mobile's themes and their preset buttons.
I would love to see anything & everything relating to Faves removed from this phone.

ME TOO!
i changed the Genius button to short press = google search and long press = genius button.
now all i need is this freaking faves dock button.
its so USELESS!!
I looked around but didn't find anything, although that doesn't mean anything.
My question is that when holding the home button, you get a whole semi circle, but just giogke now or whatever that silly thing is. Is there a way of adding programs or shortcuts to this popup. I have zero use for the Google thing so seems a shame if I am unable to add more useful items to this semi circle. Could prove pretty useful.

I haven't seen anywhere you can add to that or change it. I love the google now thing, just to be able to tell it to wake me up in an hour if nothing else:laugh:
Try this app if you haven't already though, it will let you launch an app just by sliding in from the side of the screen, or bottom, or whereever you want.

Instead of launching Google Now you could get get an app launch list using 'Launch Now', which replaces default behavior. Just serach for it in PlayStore, as I may not insert links (10 posts rule)....
There's a way for people who want to hook into the swipe up action that may not be documented. Apps like "Sudo Quicklaunch" make the system switch the icon to a generic search icon and show you the standard action completion pop-up. (One can see this in the app's promotional video.) I haven't personally tested that app, but I have seen the swipe up reassignment behavior with "Secure Settings." The Secure Settings app actually changes the icon displayed by the swipe up menu, when you tell it to "Always" use that app, and Google Search does the same thing. Coincidentally, the same reassignment behavior appears to be possible with the shop icon in the stock launcher. (I saw it for myself in the days of Honeycomb with the transition from the original Honeycomb Market app to the new, unified Market app, because both were installed, it asked me to choose when I tapped shop.)
Is there any way for me to remap the hardware keys on the S5? There's a really old app that does this floating around the forum, but it doesn't work for us on the S5. I tried editing a few system files too, but that didn't work either. Having the menu button replaced with the multitasking view is driving me crazy - I know I can long tap it for the menu function, but I'm just so used to having the menu button there. There's a few other things I'd like to do as well, like change GNow to come up when I double tap home, multitasking to come up when I long tap home, and change the multitasking button back to the menu button like it should be. Most importantly, I would also like to get rid of the 3 dot menu button that shows in most of the apps (like Chrome for example).
Any takers?
Supposedly the Xposed Additions will do most, if not all of what you need.
i'm actually trying to do this myself right now. you need to install XposedBridge first for the Additions to work.

Thanks, I'll take a look at GravityBox. On a side note, does anyone know of a possible alternative without using Xposed? Xposed is great, but in my experience, it makes the system just a bit more bogged down. It's not a serious impact, no, but I have had some stability and battery problems in the past. I'll probably go with GravityBox for now, but any other alternatives would be great
Thanks for the help though!
So.... I tried GravityBox, but unfortunately the hardware key options are very limited. I still couldn't get the regular menu button functionality back, as I only had long-press and double-tap options. Hopefully someone will come along soon and restore the menu button, because I can't be the only one who wants to see it back...

Hmm.. I didn't have any issues changing the recent button to work like a menu key.
I think you're missing something here...

Oh wow. I can't believe I missed that. I assumed it was using the menu key and the recents key interchangeably, so I didn't scroll down to see the recents option.
Silly me
All that's left to do now is to get rid of this pesky menu in Chrome and other apps..
Hey guys... can someone point me to a guide? Xposed doesn't work on Lollipop yet. (If I am not mistaken) so I cannot use gravity box for it either.. How did you do it @BJSerpas ? On which version of Android?
