Button remapper - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way for me to remap the hardware keys on the S5? There's a really old app that does this floating around the forum, but it doesn't work for us on the S5. I tried editing a few system files too, but that didn't work either. Having the menu button replaced with the multitasking view is driving me crazy - I know I can long tap it for the menu function, but I'm just so used to having the menu button there. There's a few other things I'd like to do as well, like change GNow to come up when I double tap home, multitasking to come up when I long tap home, and change the multitasking button back to the menu button like it should be. Most importantly, I would also like to get rid of the 3 dot menu button that shows in most of the apps (like Chrome for example).
Any takers?

Supposedly the Xposed Additions will do most, if not all of what you need.
i'm actually trying to do this myself right now. you need to install XposedBridge first for the Additions to work.

I use Xposed with Gravitybox, works great.

Thanks, I'll take a look at GravityBox. On a side note, does anyone know of a possible alternative without using Xposed? Xposed is great, but in my experience, it makes the system just a bit more bogged down. It's not a serious impact, no, but I have had some stability and battery problems in the past. I'll probably go with GravityBox for now, but any other alternatives would be great
Thanks for the help though!
So.... I tried GravityBox, but unfortunately the hardware key options are very limited. I still couldn't get the regular menu button functionality back, as I only had long-press and double-tap options. Hopefully someone will come along soon and restore the menu button, because I can't be the only one who wants to see it back...

Hmm.. I didn't have any issues changing the recent button to work like a menu key.
I think you're missing something here...

Oh wow. I can't believe I missed that. I assumed it was using the menu key and the recents key interchangeably, so I didn't scroll down to see the recents option.
Silly me
All that's left to do now is to get rid of this pesky menu in Chrome and other apps..

Hey guys... can someone point me to a guide? Xposed doesn't work on Lollipop yet. (If I am not mistaken) so I cannot use gravity box for it either.. How did you do it @BJSerpas ? On which version of Android?

Kindle Fire Task Switcher

Really missing a function like press and hold the Home button to see previous used apps to switch to.... I'm running with GoLauncherEX but it apparently doesn't have that ability.
Any easy way or app that can and still work with GoLauncher.
I would consider another Launcher but I've not tried any others.
Market search for taskswitcher by shisho. Worked great for me. I use Adw but should work with any launcher including stock.
One home tap for switcher, two for real home.
Thanks that works fine.
Another option is SwipePad with the Tasking add-on. Hold for a split-second at the corner or edge of the screen of your choice and then drag towards the center of the screen and a task switcher will pop up. Move to the task of your choice and let go to switch to it. You can switch really quick once you get the hang of it.

Wow that's a freaking amazing app. I paid for the recent tasks addon (since I think that's necessary for multitasking).
Thanks!
I think SwipePad is one of those "best kept secret" apps. I've been using it since it was released and cannot use an Android phone without it. It was the first app I downloaded from the market after rooting. Glad to see it gaining popularity though.

I got SwipePad with Tasker as well and it seems the only way you can do it is to put a shortcut to Tasker in one of the boxes, swipe to it, and THEN it pulls up a menu of your recent apps. I ended up getting a refund for it because that's not what I wanted - I was hoping it would automatically populate the tiles with my recent apps instead of adding an extra step.
I'll have to try some of the other solutions mentioned in this thread.
Open the settings for SwipePad and then go to the Hotspots tab where you choose which spot activates the normal swipepad. Click on a different hotspot and "recent tasks" will show up as an option. Once set up it does work like what you were hoping
Just to clarify for anyone else reading, the add-on required is "Tasking: SwipePad add-on", not to be confused with the unrelated "Tasker" app for scripting and automation

Awesome, can't believe I missed that! I'll have to give it another shot.
Corners problem
I installed Swipe Pad and wondered... where have you been for all of my Fire life? Am surprised amazon hasn't absorbed them into their product since it is so easy and simple to jump.
Altho, I did have problems configuring the corners (might be the custom home bar down there), but configuring lower left panel for tasks didn't seem to have any problem.
BTW, what a great premise - give basic app for free, sell the advanced.
[Edit: Before you jump on this, I'm now having crashing of SwipePad when trying to get it to launch market or other shortcuts. Will contact developers and see if this is imminently fixable.]

How did you configure double home taps for ADW home screen?
You can also install button savior if you're rooted your Fire. It can come in handy for some full screen apps that rely on the non-existent hard buttons also. You just long press on the button savior home icon and you'll get the little icon list of recent apps. I have mine setup with a slight delay before it invokes but it defaults to instant on.

Smart Taskbar
I tried swipepad and didn't find it easy to set up and use on the KF. I also didn't want to pay for the extra add-ons without being totally sure I liked it. Found smart taskbar and I've been really happy with it. Easier to pull up than swipepad and has recent tasks built in. I recommend it.

Remember that with paid apps, you can try them out and get a refund if you uninstall within 15 minutes. But if you don't like how Swipepad works then having the Tasking addon won't be worth it.

Can you use Swipepad w/o rooting?
Well you need to get it from the Android market (which requires root to install), but I guess you can also sideload it. The app itself doesn't require root access.

+1 on Button Savior... a nice out-of-the-way solution for the long press home feature.
Naturally some helpful soul here on XDA pointed me to this app and it works like a charm.

Customising the Google Now shortcut menu?

So you know how when you hold down on the home button and that semi-circle menu appears with Google Now....is there any way of adding your own shortcuts to that because it seems like you should be able to, and they've missed a trick if that feature isn't included. Anyone know?

As far as I can find, there is no such capability. I think the "ring" only shows up as a visual cue to tell you to slide up to activate GNow.
check out some custom roms and you can change the ring, but as far as I know there aren't any apps that would do it on a stock nexus
I wish they had added this, why wouldn't they?
Google make some ridiculous decisions.....

[Q] Nexus 4 Virtual Buttons

First I tried to find some thing like this but I didn't manage to find any posts similar .. the only thing I found is to make your nexus 4 Full Screen.
# What I need is disable virtual buttons ONLY from Home Screen as it have no point in my viewpoint .. make Lock Screen full screen with no black blank space .. and keep the virtual button everywhere else*
im28.gulfup.com/ZIzg1.jpg
im15.gulfup.com/AHzE2.jpg
# Is it possible to make virtual button background transparent as in Motorola*
im15.gulfup.com/oXGy3.jpg
* sorry that I can't post image due to xda restrictions for new users under 10 posts :/
As of now, I don't think it is possible. I would just wait for ROMs to start coming out and hopefully one of the devs will be able to implement such a feature.
full screen toggle apk + LMT 1.5 seems to be working for me.. you have to be rooted to utilize these features

lol I agree
Neither of those apps are working for my phone, at least not gestures. When I hit disable navbar, nothing happens, though it did request root.
What input did you select in LMT?
Edit: Never used these apps before, but I'm assuming the nav removal works as I didn't try rebooting. I did reboot after setting up LMT though, and it still never worked.
I use lmt and full screen and its fine.... but can anyone solve this? its really strange.. touch is fine... but once you put navigations buttons back... they simple dont work.. anyone have a final solution? thanks.

[Q] Did the menu position change for Android for an update or something?

My menu position is at the top right now, where it used to be on the bottom. I liked it better at the bottom. I did switch phones, I came from an S III that had Paranoid Android 3.99RC2 on it, and now have a LG G2 with the most recent CM11 nightly on it. So, is the menu button a CM thing, or a Kit Kat thing? Or was the bottom menu a PA thing? I want to put it back at the bottom if there is a way to do that.
Also, another unrelated question, is there a way to make the home button also the 'most recent' button by holding it down?
For the second question, to deal with it for now, I just put the side menu button on at all times and put the recent activity button where I usually put the menu button, but I'd still like to have it back to the setup I am used to.

There is no front touch buttons in display. There is "buttons and layout" in interface, but I can't make it change to hold the home button to be a function.

Yeah I don't think G2 Xposed works in AOSP, thanks though

You might want to double check the G2 Xposed thread. I'm 99% certain he's made it work with AOSP ROMs now.

Xposed is a framework that enables you to mod the system without manual hacks by installing .zip files for various functions. One of the more popular would be Sense Toolbox for HTC ROMs, or Xprivacy to give granular control over permissions and help prevent sensitive data from leaking. Search on the forum here and find the Xposed section. You'll find it informative.

Alright, thanks
sended from iPhone 9
Im running zulu's full android with xposed
One of the things im assuming only xposed easilly allows, is map various controller hardware keys, like wireless/wired mouse/keyboard/gamepads (note, ive only tested a wireless mouse wich has a few extra buttons, like backwards/forwards, but im pretty sure the others i listed should work) edit:mouse, cant remap left/right click, just one or two of the extra buttons my mouse happens to have
The modules called xposed additions, ive done some simple things for now, like mapping the backwards button on the mouse to, "press the home button", to take me directly to home screen, i click on the backward button once and it works as default by "pressing" the back, but with this module, you can remap different commands with long presses..........so click and let go = back button .....long click = home button......very nice...
If your a tasker user, you can remap hardware buttons to launch tasker shortcuts too......even nicer......many possibilities........iniating tasker tasks with remapped connected controller......directly.........i can imagine really cool stuff folks might be able to do with this, like home automated houses..............ive tested this really compact bluetooth media controller i have, which has buttons one to ten, quickly tested that i can map tasker shortcuts to each button..........possibillities maaaaaan
Only found this neat app because i had a need for it when setting up my shield
