T-Mobile internet just stopped working on my N1. - Nexus One General

I am chatting with T-Mobile customer service now, we'll see what they say but as of now if I go online a T-Mo page pops up and this is what I get:
"To connect to the web with the device you are using, you will need a webConnect data plan"
Did anyone have anything like this happen to them?

same problem here. i called they had no idea plan looked fine and told me i would need to call htc. weird thing is i have a nokia n900 that is fine i swapped the sims and same message on the nexus but the n900 still works.

Same here, I hope they fix it soon. Worked fine last night.

Did it just start for you? I didn't notice until early this morning. This might be happening all over. The t_mobile said my network needed to be updated. Had me remove the battery and still nothing. She then said it's outta her hands and gave me a Google number.
I am not calling yet. Still waiting to see what happens. Thing is, I can go to google and search -- results come up. So the web is working, its just like t-Mo restricts it when trying to go any further.
The lady said they might have me swap out the phone. But my phone is perfect - no dust, or anything like that, so I will do what it takes to not do that.
I am guessing this rep doesn't know what's going on. At least I hope.
EDIT: I am from the Philadelphia area BTW.

Double Failure in West Texas, best I can say it it was around 2:30am Mountain. TWO Nexus (Nexi?) crapped at the same time, wifi connection still worked.. just got off the phone with T-Mobile and they tried to pass me off to Google and I dug in heels and got a supervisor... and he said they had a LOT of calls coming in for the same thing. Got them to file a trouble ticket. Gotta be something in their network, was SHOWING a solid 4 bars of 3G AND/OR EDGE (I swapped them by hand) and nutting, nada.. "you need a webconnect data plan"... and they checked our account and it was all set up right.
Sounds like someone farkled something up real good.

Wow so it doesn't seem to be just in my area. I too always get 3-4 bars of 3G. I wonder if this is just a problem for N1's?

I moved the sim card over to one of my old G1's (thank goodness still had battery in it) and things worked just fine.. so yeah, someone ginked the T-Mobile network to.. not recognize the N1 for a data plan? Since it's 'not a T-Mobile device'??? Ohhhhh this is gonna get ugly..

This just popped up on the T-Mobile forums...
"Nexus Webconnectivity Issues: 1/29/10 (starting around 3:30am cst)
There is apparently an issue going on with web connections that started around 3:30am cst today. A phone call to T-Mobile tech support got routed to HTC tech support, and they are well aware of the issue. They say they have been flooded with calls regarding the issue. As of 6:30am, they have no idea what is causing the problem but are looking to the issue. They hope to get the issue resolved as soon as they can identify the problem. If anyone representing T-Mobile can get us more information, it sure would be appreciated. Tech support was rather vague."

Just out of curiosity, is anyones nexus 1 receiving data on T-Mobile right now?

Only via WiFi

webConnect data plan
Same thing just happened to me at about 7:45 am. It was working fine earlier this morning, then suddenly I get the webConnect data plan message and it won't connect over 3G or Edge. I live in Indianapolis, IN.

Wow why now, when I'm ordering mine today. =/
Something tells me that its a scheme of them trying to lock everyone into that awful 500a month 80 dollar plan...

Same Issue in NYC as well!
I have called T-Mobile and HTC. This is without a doubt a TMO problem and the reps have no clue! All they do is switch you over to HTC Tech support, lol! The endless loop until someone figures out whats wrong.
Out of curiosity, are those that are having problems currently enrolled with the G1 data plan? I am still using my older G1 data plan for 24.99 per month and was told I did not have to change my plan.
Also, its not totally out. My VOIP software is working and connecting fine. Seems to be only web browser.

So it twitter connectivity via API

I'm thinking Old Data Plans are the problem!
I am thinking the only N-1s with a problem are G-1 converts that have older "cheaper" data plans. TMO can't force you out of that plan but maybe they tried switching something and forgot to include that! Maybe a stupid idea but it is a feasible one. The newer "android" plans are alot more money!

I'm on the android plan and not working

Maps and G mail also broke.

A possible 3G/EDGE connection fix (for previous G1/MT3G owners)

My SIM was cooked by my Nexus yesterday and had it replaced. The T-mobile guy I was talking to said that the 3G issue might be happening because I still had the G1 data plan and not the android data plan. I have no idea why this would matter. But since he changed that, and my SIM, I have had great 3G reception in places where I used to only get EDGE.
I thought I would share.
Also, if you want to test this just call up T-Mobile and ask them to switch you from the G1 data plan to the android connection. It doesn't cost a penny.
Your SIM was cooked by your nexus one.... wait, what?

No. They had the G1 data plan first but then when they came out with T-Mobile's Visual Voicemail to get it to work you had to have the plan switched to the Android plan (same price).
Also, OP, tell us how did you fry your SIM?
funny you mention that, I opened a new acct with the mob and on my bill it says 'android plan' $0.00. i asked what that was and he said it was for 3G.....

wait, what??
This the second time, My g1 did it too. Don't think melted plastic or anything like that. I have a theory that the SIM sits right on top of the processor and other components in the phone. If you haven't noticed the phone can get really hot when charge (no my phone is not broken). I think it might be my charging habits. I run the battery to about 25-30% and then let it charge all night. So, that might have something to do with it.
No worries about your cool Nexus One because I honestly think this is a HTC hardware design problem. Also, I am sure these cheap little SIMs (insert bad Sim video game pun ) aren't meant to handle much heat.

This could possibly be a registration issue on the sim due to the flapping. The older model sims generally start to fail/suffer around 90k registrations (If you reg on a tower @ 3g, then switch to 2g, then back to 3g, that's 3 registrations right there).
The original G1 plan had $25/month for data + 400 texts, and $35/month for data + unlimited texts.
The Android plan has $25/month for data only, and $35/month for unlimited texts. You lose the 400 free texts, even though it's the same cost.
As for the Android plan having $0.00, I'm assuming it's from the Even More Plus bundle.
G1 Data plan is the same as the Android data plan. There is one with 400 texts on it that is a part of a bundle basically. Basically what I'm saying is all of the android data plans will work on all of the T-Mobile phones because they are the same...I still have my G1 data plan on my line and my 3G is flawless and I don't even live in a major market (Jacksonville, FL). I work for T-Mobile and know this to be true. Granted I always put the designated plan for each phone, but I'm almost 100% positive it doesn't make a difference. The cooked sim thing sounds shady too. Your G1 didn't "cook" your sim. Just my $0.02...
Get this though. I had my G1, SIM died about a month of use, Nexus One died after one week. Now my manager has a MT3G and bought it new about 4 months ago and had the same SIM for the past 6 years, died yesterday. He had a Wing before the MT3G, but his SIM never. I also have another co-worker with a G1, but no data plan. His SIM has been fine ever since he bought his G1 off some chick.
3G sucks in the Minneapolis area. I am always connecting and reconnecting, happened with my G1 too. Not to blame you or anything. I think the connect reconnect issue here in the Mpls/St. Paul area might have something to do with the dying SIM cards.

I've had my SIM since I joined T-mobile in January of 2003. I only replaced it because the paint on one side was chipping a little and I didn't want it to clog up my phone. Special care...? Just pop it in and leave it. Nothing special needed.

I meant special care, as in not letting it get to hot or charging it a specific way, not cleaning it or anything.

I'm reposting my post in the development forum for you guys... thought you may be interested:
So I've been following this issue on Google's support website, and one of the rooted users over there is almost positive it's a software issue with 2.1. He actually flashed a port of 2.0.1. Although he got lots of FC's, obviously as 2.0.1 isn't made for the N1, he was getting excellent 3G connectivity, and constant speeds over 1500kbps!
Here's the link so you can read for yourself. The user's name is GNove.

Nexus One AT&T Data Plan Question

Currently, people with a G1/Dream, Magic, Hero etc. on AT&T are able to get the $10 Family Data or $15 Unlimited Data option on their phone, because AT&T does not recognize it as a smartphone since they do not sell it (I know this is true because we have one in the house).
Can anyone tell me how AT&T recognizes the Nexus One? Does it show up as a smarphone on your online account, forcing you to use the $30 PDA Data plan? Or does it show up as "unidentified," meaning you are free to choose one of the cheaper plans?
Before I switched to T-Mobile it showed up as unidentified in the account on the web page. They must got have gotten the maker IMEI codes to the phones to figure out who's using a N1 on their network. I had the option to change it back, but I don't know if it would have reverted it or not.

clarification:
the tmo g1 will show 'unknown' or whatever, and you'll be stuck with edge. afaik the tmo nexus will be the same way.
now, the ATT nexus, i'll bet they hit you with the "OMGZ YOU HAZ SMARTZPHONE ON OUR NETWORKZ !!! PAY ME PWEEZ !" rediculousness. $30 sounds about right for them.
please, do update the thread if you find concrete. i'm only going on the bs they spouted about a 5 year old palm treo. yes, a treo supposedly burned $30 worth of data. please.
Good point, although if they don't identify one version of the Nexus, I don't see why they would the other. Hopefully someone who has the new one right now on AT&T can answer.
And while the G1 does get restricted to EDGE, if it was a Rogers Dream, it would get 3G and as far as I know AT&T would still see it as "unidentified."

That's correct. I had a Rogers HTC Magic before getting the N1 and I was on AT&T, the device was not identified but I still got 3G @ the $15 price point for data. It wasn't until I put in my SIM in the N1 to check it for defects that I got the texts and emails saying my phone was on the wrong data plan.

the IMEI includes data that identifies the phone make/model and at&t must have access to that info, lol. pop in that N1 SIM and it's just a matter of time before you're conveniently upgraded to the Smartphone data plan. there are a couple of threads on the N1 forum that provide more detail about the data plan changes.
Well that should answer my question then...if the Rogers Magic was unidentified but the Nexus One triggered it right away, then AT&T is obviously recognizing it as a smarphone and triggering the Smartphone data plan.

My experience was that AT&T knew when even the T-Mobile Nexus One was being used as my account triggered the $30 data with it as well. Currently seeking a kind AT&T rep who can add a smartphone exclusion to my account on both lines for the AT&T Nexus One's I picked up yesterday.
Logged into my ATT account and all I see for my Nexus One that operates on the ATT fequency is a gray outline of a flip phone.
So in my case it has not been recognized as Google N1.
I got my T-mobile n1 for use on AT&T on 2-18. 8 hours into ownership I got the text saying I need to upgrade my data plan, which at that point had been unlimited text/[email protected]$30 for use with my Nokia N85. That threw me into a rage, as I'd be GD'd if I was going to pay 30+ a month for edge.
On 2-22 I switched to T-Mobile.
18 hours later, came back to AT&T. Grass isn't greener on the other side.
From 2-23 until 3-18, no nasty text from AFee&Fee asking to upgrade. 3-18 and ongoing, no upgrade text sent for the 850mhz N1 (I hate calling it the "AT&T Nexus One").
I'm back on the $30 unlimted text and data plan, and i've been with it steady for one month now. YMMV, as may mine, good luck
I ordered the At&t N1 the day it was released and have been using it ever since I got it the next day. So far they haven't changed my data plan.
possibly its region based
ive had tmo band n1 and att band n1, tmo band one for about 3 weeks and now att band n1 for a week or two, no texts to update plan, yet...ive been streaming music on last fm all day long in high quality so we'll see
The grass is totally greener on the T-Mobile side in Seattle. That's all I can say.

Probably. I only had 3g in a few parts of metro Tulsa, Edge everywhere else. My mindset was if i'm gonna be stuck with edge, I might as well keep my 6k rollover minutes and m2m, since everyone I know is on AT&T. I did run a speed test after getting the 8fiddy, and here's what I got:
Please stop asking about AT&T forcing you into data plan or not. Here's why:
1. Their definition of smartphones are smartphones that they sell. If you buy unlocked phone, that shoild be fine.
2. If you've been forced to upgrade, most likely, you've used A LOT of data. When I say A LOT, I mean like a few GB worth. They will most likely flag yout account.
If you keep asking, either BGR or Engadget will write an article about this and inquire AT&T. And they will have to respond. What if DeLaga just goes: Gee, maybe we should force N1 user to upgrade, let's go hunt them all.
Just FYI, I have the AT&T N1 on AT&T family data plan for 10 and it's fine. So hush hush and keep this btw ourselves.
Question for you guys who got texts from AT&T. Did you ever tlel them you were switching to an N1? Many threads I read people going from $30 => $15 and saying they had an N1. Sometimes the rep would let them and then a few days later they get a nasty text... What should I expect with the ATT N1?

Let me clear up some of the misconceptions you seem to have from what I've experienced thus far.
1. Even with an unlocked Nexus One, AT&T can still change your plan as this is exactly what they did to me. I bought an unlocked AWS Nexus One and less than a month after popping my SIM into it, I got the message and my data plan was changed, even though I was only using EDGE.
2. AT&T knows which phone you're using. It may not seem as such with your online account showing an unknown device, but the device still registers on their network and there are ways for them to see which device it is. The CSR's and Customer "Solutions" rep didn't know what phone I was using when I called to complain about the data plan change, but the woman from AT&T's corporate response team had no problem finding out that I was using a Nexus One when she was responding to my BBB complaint.
3. The amount of data may play into all this, but I will tell you that I used over 4gb of data with my i8910 months before I had the Nexus One and didn't hear a word from AT&T.
4. You are most likely to receive the text message to change your data plan on the day your billing cycle ends, so if you haven't gotten the text yet, wait til your next bill comes before you start celebrating.
I hope that helps.
in response to both your statements i believe its both. because all the friends i know working at ATT swear up and down that its incredibly rare to get flagged. Might be almost random if anything. Doesnt meant it wont happen for either reason.

how long between putting in the SIM and getting the "convenience" texts?
I've had my N1 since the day after it was released and haven't gotten anything yet. In fact, all the phones in my sig have been on this account in the past year at some point - including the Fuze which I've had on there since the day it came out. Still on the MediaMax200.
Notes: My billing cycle starts on the 27th and I rarely go over 100MB a month.

I didnt tell them. I went from a phone they didn't sell/support (nokia n85 unlocked) to a phone they don't sell/support (N1). Didn't tell anyone, just swapped my sim out. 8 hours into ownership, at 3AM no less, the nastygram showed up via text and Gmail. Granted, the N85 is a 3g phone, but I doubt my data use was over a gig last month. I'm always under 2 gigs even on my heavy flow months. I doubt seriously that it had anything to do with data consumption.
All of their smartphones being sold must now be on an unlimited data plan, i know that much, but they didn't sell me my N1, and i'm still in contract for my iphone 3g.. breaking their terms of the contract by forcing me into an unnecessary data plan upgrade can emancipate me from it. I know they force the upgrade to try to recoup some of their subsidy for the other phones, but that doesnt apply here!
And to the poster telling us to stop asking about it-its happening to people, it's happening irregularly and without reason, and that is cause for discussion. BGR and the other tech sites can ask AT&T all they want, but a material change to the service, such as cramming (i miss that term) an unwanted/unwarranted plan upgrade, is still a contract violation and is cause for emancipation. Not that I'd jump ship now, because I just got the 850mhz N1, but it's certainly a bargaining chip to get your plan switched back relatively hassle free.

My 3g LITERALLY doesn't work

I was trying to do a speedtest, and it didn't budge at all. This has been happening for quite some time and I actually had a chance to try 3g since it wasn't switching at all. WELL it didn't work and there was almost a halt of data until 3.5 g kicked in.
Any ideas? And while we are on the topic, for some reason when i tried flashing the radio update image from modaco via RA, it gave me the android out of the box every time.
Bump. I'm on T-Mobile 3g.
where do you live?
if it didnt budge, do you even have an internet plan? like can you browse the web and stuff?
follow the wiki's... theres not much more to be said about flashing things... they are as straight forward as it gets... if you cannot figure them out you really should not be messing with your phone...
I am so pissed with this phone and Google's support,my 3G is worse than ever, right now I have a G1 and this **** called Nexus One on the table, the Nexus' 3G signal is sooooo bad,it does fluctuate so much and so often....if I turn it upside down the 3g signal becomes more stable.
I called Google customer service and they tell me to dial *#*#4636#*#* and go through some of the settings,it did not do any better, they guy ended up apologizing and saying....well you have 14 days to test the device otherwise you can return it....what an advice from Mr Google.
And this is the company that is going to release this piece of art for other cell companies and networks, hope they do a better job.I can see a bunch of these phones for sale all over....unless they do something.I have had the phone for 24hrs with the new OTA update.
yes. It works fine on EDGE and 3.5 G (H) I really have no idea how to fix it

[Q] 3G Problems

Is anyone else experiencing problems with 3G staying connected today in the Philadelphia / South Jersey area?
4G is working and stays connected but my 3G data connection keeps dropping. The 3G icon will disappear from the bar when the connection drops. I have a good signal, or so it seems, and i'm in an area where I typically never have a problem. I am running the latest stock OTA firmware without root on 0003 hardware. I have tried rebooting and updating my profile / PRL.
Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated...

new york as well, one thing that seems to fix some issues (not all of em) is going into the keypad, dial ##3282# press Edit Mode enter your msl then go into data profile, press the menu key and press reset, that seems to help a little...
if u need ur msl code download msl reader from the market (free app)
Thanks for the feedback... For now at least my connection is solid. Today was the first time I've ever experienced this issue.
Sprints network is suckin all over the place for the past month or 2. Youll going to be waiting a very long tome.to use anything that involves data usuage. Your lucky if you get to watch a full you tube vid without getting an error message. Sometimes when i send a pic message it just stays sending for hours. I called and complained...they gave me a $30 credit for bad servide. I also told them even though they issued me a credit and if the issue is not resolved in 2wks i will be cancelling my contract with them and i better not get a cancleation fee for doing it cause it is not my fault. Rep ....actually i think it was a supervisor that said it is a coverage issue im having and blamed it on out towers, wich is bs cause ive called.several times and complained. I actually dropped the call cause of poor service while on the phone with another rep.
I gave sprint a chance...now its back to verizon. Prices are great on sprint but what good is it if i never have service.

Thats pretty much how im starting to feel at this point. I just keep thinking if im going to switch I need to go ahead and do it while they still have the unlimited data. Trying to see when the Thunderbolt is going to drop.. I see a lot of people saying Feb some time.
Im lucky that I live in KC where the sprint campus is. Our service is always running great. Except the building I work in sucks for signal. Walk outside and I go from no bars to full bars.
The data network has been complete **** in Idaho for a month! Its driving me nuts!

Anyone feel like reporting this issue to.engadget? Feels.like.maybe that is the only way we will get some real answers on wtf is going on.
I'm northwest of Philly, Gwynedd to be more precise. I just just got .26 Mbps down and .48 Mbps up. I think that is pretty sucky and I have to tether my iPad all day to that speed.
Im in philly (west) & Im ok. 4g is a lil slower than i originally experienced, 3g is just ok. Either way it has been a slight "slow down" since i first got my phone. I kinda have just been tolerating it....
I agree with philly. When I first got my evo I was amazed at the speed of everything. Especially 4g. When ur 4g speed tests start to match your t-mobile buddies 3g speed test there is a problem. It seems to have dropped quality over the last month here in Austin tx as well. Hopefully Feb 7th is good news. I just upgraded two of my lines with two year sa.

TMobile T-Zone Issue:Subsciption Upgrade

Has anyone else been having an issue when using 3g data w/ the Tzone getting the "subscription required' message? I have tried using both the epc.tmobile.com and the internet2.voicestream.com APN's and both are currently giving me this message. It just started this week. When turning off 3g, data works fine.
I've had the exact same issue! internet2.voicestream.com is working for me however but it's sucking my battery life down the tubes. In less than half a day I'm down to about 30%.
No idea what is going on..
kinda bittersweet to hear that someone else is having the same issue, but its not something I would wish upon someone. Main reason I've been sticking with and loving the N1, was because of its compatibility feature w/ tzone.
Hopefully this is just a temporary thing and will revert back.
I kept having a similar issue. I was redirected to a web2go page telling me that my grandfathered data plan was incompatible. Called customer loyalty and they switched me to the actual android plan and kept me at my same rate. Problem solved.
Same issue here. Started Tuesday Oct 25 for me. Using wap.voicestream.com APN seems to mostly work as a workaround. I've noted some funny battery life effects too though (slightly increased drain).

Is there any trick to getting connected to the customer loyalty department? I've been a customer for, wow, about 9 years now (all but the first two out of contract). I sure hope they'd be flexible and offer the same sort of deal in my case.
I'm in the Portland, OR area and epc.tmobile.com is now working for me again. Strange.

I'm in Portland, OR as well. Just tried switching back to epc now and it does seem to work again! Thank goodness. I'd checked every day for the first few days (issues started Oct 25th for me) but had given up recently.
Last year I experienced a similar brief episode (only lasted a day in my case) where I would get the upgrade message and couldn't get any data connection. Then everything went back to normal.

Did you ask or say anything specific that made them give you android plan for same price, assuming $5.99? Same issue in NYC
I was having issues earlier this week in seattle, wa.
I'll tell you what though I'm switching to that $30 100minute plan as soon as it is available with the galaxy nexus. The tzones was great for money savings but I'll be glad to not have to deal with apn/network headaches any longer, and for a cheaper price to boot.
I had T-Zones for about 2 years and then when calling in to make a plan change they noticed I had and Android phone and the service rep immediately removed T-Zones and T-Mobile internet from my account. They refused to put it back on saying it was a legacy plan and only one of the "Android" data plans were allowed.
I switched to the Preferred myTouch Unlimited Web package for $20/mo. So, not that bad.
