HTC Magic official ROM update with Sense Released... Anything new?

Anyone have a friend or family member with a Magic?
I'd be curious to see if there's any new features that could potentially be ported to our Hero.

Looks like they have a pull port of Eclair as well. I bet we could steal their sense for our AOSP builds, problem with that IMHO: Most of the people running AOSP want Vanilla - The push to get it in and working would be minimal. Sense is sadly not as simple as installing an APK.

Why would you want to add Sense to an AOSP build? That's basically your stock ROM minus some of the crap apps crammed on there, which is already available.

I was wondering the same thing when I saw this on Engadget this morning, what version of Android is the MyTouch running, I thought I remember hearing that it was on 1.6.

It is 1.6.
My co-worker has one and likes to remind of the fact that it came pre-installed on his MyTouch.
EDIT: Correction, he got it OTA. I'm running AOSP1.6 now anyway so... screw him!

[Request] So, I fell in love today

With this theme.
Thing is, it's for the GSM hero. I have no idea on how to port it over, or even where to begin.
So my request is either someone port it over for me, or write up a detailed explanation of how to port a theme.
There may be a small donation (~$5) for whoever completes this.

Umm, Buuf is for CM4.2, which runs on Android 1.6. It would be a hell of a lot easier to port to the AOSP 1.6 build...

i rarely see him on android central anymore. i did talk to him via email a month ago and it seemed like someone really pissed him off.

no offense to any of the other devs on here but we need his contributions. i bet 2.1 would be even 10x better with a custom kernel from him.

+1 he helped me quit a bit when i first bought my hero.

He stopped customizing because someone used his Gumbo ROM name in their own that included some paid apps

yeah i remember that. same happened with damage, or something similar.

Hate to break it to you guys, but he ain't coming back to XDA. And he ain't releasing anything he does build...at least not under his own name.
I don't want to be blunt, but give it up.
Until this forum grows up about 25 years...at least as far as mentality is concerned, we won't see him producing anything publicly again. Even then, at this point in time he has been way to jaded to care. Either that or he has bought an EVO.
Dude is smart, it's ashame it was ruined for the community as a whole. That Gumbo ROM was the ****.

gbhil still owns a hero

He's very much active at Android Central. In fact, he released a 2.1 with his own custom kernel. Im using it now and its ****ing FAST!

Unfortunately, good as he is, he can't do anything with the functional kernel for 2.1..it's .29 and has not been released (or even leaked as far as I know, or we'd have much more customized ROMs).
The guy's amazing, no doubt about it. But as far as customizing kernels he can only deal with what he has to work with.

Kernels are the operating systems themselves. In Android, the core operating system is Linux. A kernel controls all low-level operations of the device, whether it is a computer or a phone. Without a kernel, you have a paperweight.
Even Windows has a kernel (in NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 and 7 it is NT Kernel...for 95, 98 and Me, it the 9x kernel).
In MacOS X, the kernel is Darwin (based on BSD).

Besides Google, does any of the HTC phones actually have a 2.6.29 source (Donut or Eclair)?

ive decided to take pancake 1.5c...the fastest rom there is IMO and customize it and tweak whatever i can.
i know most are going to the 2.1 roms but with the some bugs that plague them i wondered if anybody would have any interest in this before i start working on it?

and what bugs some minor quirks here and there but nothing major nothing with going back to 1.5 imho

It's only 1 vote, but I would be. I keep upgrading to various 2.1 ROMs only to find myself going back to 1.5-based ROMs.
My programming skills are non-existent, so I couldn't help any of the development, but I would be happy to test anything you might create.

says me...1.5c based off of gumbo is about the fastest rom there is, or at least that i have tried and ive tried them all and done benchmarks.

1.5c is Gumbo. I'm not sure the what version number Papapancake was.

I don't know if my opinion count, but I did like Pancake when it was out. However, after I fresh 2.0 leak, I doubt I will every go back to 1.5 imho. Maybe other might like if 2.0 is not perfect until final release. You might want a poll here.

yeah i know, he just took gumbo and the stovepipe 0.32 kernel and improved on the speed a bit. i just figured it would be something different until we can get the official 2.1 dump which from what i hear may be friday.

FYI about "all" the roms... in terms of FROYO roms, they are virtually ALL THE SAME -- CM6. The rest of them are actually just rebranded CM6.

It's not that bad - there were times when you could choose from really different ROMs, but then Cyanogen started to support G1 with his CyanogenMod and these days there's only few the bravest who try to build their ROM from AOSP, not from CM source.
So it's like CM AND themed/renamed/scripted MC.

Heh, it's like when I first got my G1 and watching the android store: "Oh! There's another one!".
I've been around since the beginning and you are right about how "sweet" and exciting it was when the updates came fast and furious. I guess I've been spoiled by that experience, and now it seems to me there are two pages of same ol' different bonnet.

yeah, feel ya buddy, i got my g1 less than a week ago, and i felt exactly like you when i wanted to chose a ROM to flash.
I flashed CM6 just to try it out, then switched to biffmod 2.sth, which is like a shaved CM. biff runs a lot faster than CM for me, but i need some ROM that will let at leaste SOME ram free, and that wont kill my battery in just a few hours.. i guess ill have to go for eclair or donut,, i just didnt want to miss froyo updates..
so if you do find some good ROM, let me know

Mine is most certainly not a copy of CM... It's incomplete (camcorder, video), but it's not CM.

Oh wait! If I recall you had the first "froyo" right! I was just remembering how that rom was stable for a week with no slowdowns! It just had missing functionality.... I missed that your still developing, I thought you stopped on froyo cause of cm. Going to look for it now. Thx

Chromium 4.5. It's in the first two pages, I'm on an iPad now so posting links is like pulling teeth, sorry. I've been on Super F now for 24+ hours and it's pretty good too.
Anyone able to recommend a donut or eclair that is still being maintained I would be much obliged.

aaaah I think its called "Chromatic", not "Chromium", thats why I couldnt find it.. lol
ill give it a try, but anyways, Im still looking for a very light 2.1 to see if I can get more battery life and RAM
