no offense to any of the other devs on here but we need his contributions. i bet 2.1 would be even 10x better with a custom kernel from him.

What do kernels do?

+1 he helped me quit a bit when i first bought my hero.

He stopped customizing because someone used his Gumbo ROM name in their own that included some paid apps

yeah i remember that. same happened with damage, or something similar.

Hate to break it to you guys, but he ain't coming back to XDA. And he ain't releasing anything he does build...at least not under his own name.
I don't want to be blunt, but give it up.
Until this forum grows up about 25 years...at least as far as mentality is concerned, we won't see him producing anything publicly again. Even then, at this point in time he has been way to jaded to care. Either that or he has bought an EVO.
Dude is smart, it's ashame it was ruined for the community as a whole. That Gumbo ROM was the ****.

awesome, good to know he is still developing.

gbhil still owns a hero

He's very much active at Android Central. In fact, he released a 2.1 with his own custom kernel. Im using it now and its ****ing FAST!
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-hero-roms-hacks/9522-sprint-2-1-leak.html

Unfortunately, good as he is, he can't do anything with the functional kernel for 2.1..it's .29 and has not been released (or even leaked as far as I know, or we'd have much more customized ROMs).
The guy's amazing, no doubt about it. But as far as customizing kernels he can only deal with what he has to work with.

Kernels are the operating systems themselves. In Android, the core operating system is Linux. A kernel controls all low-level operations of the device, whether it is a computer or a phone. Without a kernel, you have a paperweight.
Even Windows has a kernel (in NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 and 7 it is NT Kernel...for 95, 98 and Me, it the 9x kernel).
In MacOS X, the kernel is Darwin (based on BSD).

so whats next for our hero's?

are we waiting on the official 2.1 to be released to get more fully functioning roms?
do you guys see more apps and themes being made for our cdma heros in the near future?
id love one day to see as many options on the cdma versions as they have for gsm.
any thoughts or input on this guys? what would you like to see?
maybe even the possibility of porting webos or maybe even winmo to our phones? i don't see why not as winmo can port android. it's not on the top of my list but it would be cool to play with.
Dude. You start a lot of threads man lol. But yeah, Android 1.5 was made for GSM, and HTC had to do some crazy wackjob stuff to make it work for CDMA. Android 1.6 started including CDMA support, and Android will continue to support CDMA from 1.6 on out. So basically, once 2.1 comes out officially, I believe we will be in business. You should just chill out a little bit about the whole being bored and what's gonna happen stuff, and just enjoy your device. The HERO is a great phone, and it's only gonna get better!

yeah but i like to discuss, hence why we are on a forum.
Haha.. Yeah think it would be kinda cool to have WinMo on our phones, too; although I doubt I would use it for more than a day or two. Our Devs are seriously working hard getting the DEV-ROMs working and they're doing a ****ing great job. I can't wait to see what comes after the official update!!!
So... this might be a stupid question, but exactly what are we looking to see in the 2.1? I don't have any problems with my phone now, a little laggy and short battery life but I plan to get a new battery on payday. So, what is so great that people are actually talking about unrooting to go to the Official 2.1? I wouldn't unroot for anything they could possibly put in there. What if I'm at a friends and need internet and he doesn't have any? I gotta be able to tether. i can always use PDAnet, but its just not the same. And no longer being able to control the CPU, etc. And I love flashing all the new roms that come out and experimenting with the awesome stuff the Devs crank out, so really what is gonna be so awesome about 2.1?

Because when Sprint releases 2.1, then our devs will be able to take all the amazing-ness from 2.1 and combine it with the amazing-ness of having root access! Until then, we're just using hacks and leaks to get what we can get.

well to me 2.1 was the holy grail until today.
The Dream rom has Flash 10.1, so its my new holy grail.
Oh, I agree totally that it will be awesome when the devs get their hands on all the 2.1 stuff, but what about the people talking about unrooting for the official upgrade? I guess what I'm really asking is...what amazing-ness? What are we waiting for? Will the phone make us breakfast in the morning and grab beer for us once we get 2.1? I'm in here every day like the rest, checking for updates on 2.1 status and waiting impatiently for the release, but again I ask..what am I waiting for? More speed? Less bloatware? Bug fixes? I'm just curious, I know that going from 1.29 to 1.56 fixed the massive lag when going from portrait to landscape and the original MMS issue, etc. But I really didn't notcie a diff in my phone after the upgrade. Seriously, what are we looking for in this new update?

Official .29 kernel or not. I bet once camera is backported most devs will use the modded .27 kernel to optimise their builds until .29 source is released. The main things we will get from the official release is the frameworks, a few and apks to allow for all of Sprints stuff to work. And I've almost managed that already but yeah other advantages of 2.1 are vwp, better frameworks, better opengl, better apps, UIs, and a better os all together. I know ill make sure the build is ready for all the root users on day one. If its not already leaked by then.
let's hope for a HERO200 leak then!
come on single unruly mischevious HTC employee....if you do this, then we promise we won't bother you like we did to get the source code..

Yeah I wouldnt mind hearing from someone that came from say CM5 to the latest stock Froyo. Is it better? Is it worth flashing now seeing as how CM6 is about a week or so away?
I would try it now myself, but I can't give up the dumb little things. (such as trackball wake)
I've used every CM version and every leaked version of Froyo. I was surprised that the final Froyo release seemed faster and smoother than FRF83. The browser seems really fast now and app switching is great thanks to JIT. I like my FRF85B Froyo final setup right now more than I did CM5.0.8. I can't wait for CM6 though.
Super. Wonderful. Amazing. Thank you Google and anyone else on the OHA that contributed to this.
It's great. I love it. I love it even more when someone hands me a HTC Touch Pro2 with Windows Mobile on it... Microsoft shouldn't even be in the mobile business. They should leave it to the experts. It was sad.
If you ever get a chance to put your hands on Windows Mobile... do it. It will make you appreciate your Android phone more than when you bought it.

I don't think the JIT would have much impact on app switching. The highmem kernel OTOH makes a huge difference. My launcher was always relaunching when switching from big apps such as the browser or navigation. Since upgrading to froyo I haven't seen the launcher restart once.

Yeah you are probably right. I just thought I read somewhere that JIT had benefits for loading apps, it might have just been for 3rd party apps because JIT converts to native code before processing (something like that).

The JIT actually wouldn't have any impact on loading times. The standard interpreted code is always run initially. It's only once the app starts running that the JIT is able to locate frequently accessed blocks of code that would benefit from compiling to native code.

A co-worker of mine approached me, and said he bought this Androidâ„¢ phone from a friend. He heard that I know about Android, rooting, apps, etc. so he had some questions for me. He hands me the phone, and I was thrilled to hold this LARGE HTC DEVICE in my hand. I haven't held an EVO, yet, so imagine my joy!!! My first time ya know so I was honored.
It was branded T-MOBILE though ... hhmm, this can't be right!!! It should say Sprint!!!
After seeing the homescreen and tapping/flicking/swiping for all of 1.0 seconds, I handed it back to him and told him he has a Windows Mobile device - NOT ANDROID, and boy oh boy, was he pissed!!!! LMAO

FYI about "all" the roms... in terms of FROYO roms, they are virtually ALL THE SAME -- CM6. The rest of them are actually just rebranded CM6.
Thanks for the sweet input. I'm sure the community will decide to stop working on all of their different ROMs, themes, and whatnot to suit your belief.
It's not that bad - there were times when you could choose from really different ROMs, but then Cyanogen started to support G1 with his CyanogenMod and these days there's only few the bravest who try to build their ROM from AOSP, not from CM source.
So it's like CM AND themed/renamed/scripted MC.

To be clear, not saying this is a bad thing.
yeah, feel ya buddy, i got my g1 less than a week ago, and i felt exactly like you when i wanted to chose a ROM to flash.

[Q] Is there any Kernel that can run like SnapTurbo?

So far, you can only run 7.6 Snapturbo on Cyanogenmod Roms !! I tried CM6 but I did not really have a good feel to It.. im more of a Sense type of guy, Im really in love though with the 7.6 Snapturbo That CM6 is capable of running.. I ran it and hit a 2300 on my Quadrant!! WOW!!
Only thing is i dont really like the CM6 interface/skins/themes/ etc..
I like how all my e-mails and contacts are synced in the Fresh Rom/every other Rom
MY question is..
Is there another Kernel that runs like 7.6 Snapturbo?? If so which one and is it possible to run it on Fresh Rom or Similar Roms
Im familiar with Virus Rom aswell as i used to have that one prior to Fresh
If someone can point me in the right Direction I would Greatly Appreciate it
I don't know of any Sense roms that run Turbo.
Development??
Is there talk about one being developed ?? why is it that only CM6 is capable of running it?? what does it have that the other do not?
the developer only released it for cm6, and he will not release the code for turbo, so it will not be seen in a sense rom anytime soon, unless the developer changes his mind.

OP, have you tried LauncherPro while you were on CM6? Between LP and some skin edits, you can make it fairly sense-like. Take a look at the Matted Blues theme for an example.
I dont have the knowledge of a developer but, if Cyangen could do it... why can't another Dev do some research on the 7.6 snapturbo and make the Necessary adjustments
Because Cyanogen didn't do it, jmxp69 did, and TURBO is closed-source, owned by Spiicytuna and jmxp69. Nobody else will ever be able to recreate it unless they can figure out what was done, from scratch.

I don't. What app actually pushes the CPU beyond it's limit? The only noticeable/visual bottle neck (that affects most if not all current available apps) on the EVO is the GPU which Snap Turbo does not improve.

The kernel and OS are GPL'd, meaning they have to stay open-source, but SNAP Turbo is an app created by Spiicytuna, using special code in the Snap kernel and various tweaks to the phone's filesystem. Those modifications, and how to interface with the kernel modifications, are not covered under the GPL, and Spiicytuna and jmxp69 have decided themselves not to make TURBO open-source at this time.
Their choice. If you don't like it, you can go use that kanged kernel from the forum's most popular code-and-credit stealer.

yes, CM itself can be set up right for once, then are the OTA roms who are with less things...so they run quite good and ofc the AOSP froyo roms.
What setup is needed for CM to be fast? I don't need any features, just speed. If there's a better FroYo ROM for that I'm open to switching.
Gingerbread on the Dream will happen...I have no doubt about that. The question is how well it'll run. If only the Dream had a little more RAM...
Come on man when have we "never" been able to get an update? Im gonna take a wild stab in the dark and say we will still be getting roms for at least another 2 years!

I don't know about that, because I'm pretty sure Honeycomb or whatever they decide to call Android 3.0 has a minimum requirement for 1GHz processor so the Hero, Sapphire and Dream might be out of luck, especially the Hero because they're still stuck with the 2.6.29 kernel. 3.0 might be possible but I doubt 2 yrs of new Android ROMs is plausible.
AOSP gingerbread running on my Dream..
So seems mostly a go.. will require some poking for a true release but not that bad.
If it's not officially supported in AOSP, does that mean we'll be without camera drivers?

check out the 2708 radio+kernels. By switching to the new radios released for the mytouch + kernel with support, you gain back an extra chunk of ram for os use. Definitely helps out froyo builds

camera (with the minimal poking to get it to compile) is working
No release because many bits of this are easy to fix
> wifi works
> camera works
> hw3d I think is working .. but lanuncher/3d gallery/keyboard are running a bit slow .. and we know the port to 2.2 of launcher/keyboard run fine
> bluetooth no-go but that is just because I'm using a sapphire firmware (easy to swap)
> gsensor no go.. I think this will be a relatively easy thing to correct. API change confused it.
Taking a break from testing while I make a repo to work from

Honeycomb (Android 3.0 or 2.4....who knows) will not require a 1Ghz CPU.
Still don't understand why you people want gingerbread so much. The time it takes to get something that was never intended to even be ran on the G1 was at least a year or so and that was only with eclair and froyo. We can't run a lot of things because of the lack of ram like jit. Everything lacks now, even the gpu.
Please stop with all this silly nonsense about Gingerbread threads and just be patient. I have little faith in the project, as most original devs have completely moved onto different devices which are easier. Not saying the new devs are bad, I'm just saying we lost a lot of veteran support on the G1.
Why not just use something fast on your G1 that won't fry it's sockets after 5 hours of use?

People just want to have the newest, and humans like pushing limits (in this case of the G1).

Not only that, look at ezterry's mt3g port of froyo. 2708 radio/kernel + mt3g = hot fastness. Loaded it on two G1s, the gf loves how much faster it is than the other froyo roms we've tried. Probably has to do with the fact ezterry's port is nearly completely stock (it is without the parts update).

(keep hitting thnks buttn by mistake on every post xD)
Anyway I think 2.3 will be too much for the G1/MT3G to handle, it already struggles with 2.2 so 2.3 is over doing it. Battery will not be very good, as most phones with 2.2 now have 512+ ram as the standard. To get the best experience you'll need faster hw to support the effects,apps,etc...2.1 is the furthest i would go w/ a g1, but 1.6 is where the best perf is. I would go with a new phone if you wanna enjoy 2.3.
p.s. not trying to discourage anyone, just stating facts
