Good bye Microsoft hello Android - HD2 General

Just had to post a IMO post real quick.
I had the hd2 for about a month.
Great hardware htc. Horrible OS microsoft.
I have been a loyal winmobile person for years, until i got this phone and saw how much winmobile hampered the hd2s potential. I got so fed up I sold my hd2 and got a Nexus one. I could not happier, its awesome!
If you have been hesitant to jump on the Android band wagon, don't be! its like having the hd2 hardware (minus the grande screen) + iphone gui + multiprocessing + open development all in one.
Android and the nexus one are not perfect i know, but at least they are vested in improving and it is already leaps and bounds better than the winmobile on HD2. Plus the more of you good mod'rs and developers make the switch to Android the better their Market place is going to be.
Making the switch is like coming out of the dark ages.
I'll get off my soap box now, I just had to post this, because I wish someone had told me this before i dropped 700 bones on an hd2.
see you on the Nexus One threads.

Nice.
Dont worry (with us) and be happy !

meh
i have come the other way. had a Hero - great phone, tiny screen. had a few issues with the 3 of them i had so swapped to a nexus one.
Nexus one - OK, but not really "all that". its android without sense, and the AMOLED screen is truly horrible when using it outside. way way worse than a good LCD.
Now i have the HD2 and im loving it

Ridiculous. It's nobody's fault when you're unable to inform yourself. And it's nobody's fault when YOU don't like the HD2.
Why should we have told you not to buy it? We are perfectly satisfied with the device. I've tried Android and discovered nothing that would make me want it over Windows Mobile. We can't speak for you. And we really don't care about whether YOU like the device or not. There's absolutely no point in telling us, it's only spam in the forum.
But yeah, say hello to Android from me too. You won't see me in the Nexus forum, however.

aha you're a dude post-moderne?

ok not to get into a fight...but hd2 is mt first WinMo phone...and to be truthful, the gorgeous and sleek hd2 device when coupled with WinMo and SPB shell and other doodads which i purchased, it's almost a better experience than the symbian os...and i am talking fom the viewpoint of phone functionality and entertainment/internet surfing device...sure i had to shell out the dough for a lot of apps to get it to the level where i like it...but now that i have it...nothing beats its...
btw, i think am one of the few who hated Sense from the first look...so here's my apps which make it better than anything else...
1. SPB mobile shell - in terms of customization and ease of use, it makes the UI experience a game which even a blind man can enjoy...
2. Iconsoft PhoneEx dialer - amazing!! beats even the kepboard phones like the blackberry and all...
3. CorePlayer - havent looked back once i got this...
Other apps - Resco explorer, photo manager, spb backup, gonews touch, im+, pcoket shield, galarm, pocket radio, ceTwit, facebook app, pocket informant, resco audio recorder, freda...all these and a few other odds and ends make the WinMo exp amazing!!
am pretty happy with what i got now..

'Its awesome' 'leaps and bounds better' and 'coming out of the darkness' don't mean a thing, maybe you could be a bit more specific and provide more details, in what way you feel the Nexus is better, the Android system seems a bit crude to me.

Reviewers have claimed for years that every 'X' phone that comes down the line is an iPhone killer. The fact of the matter is the HD2 is the only one that makes iPhoners look on in interest. That's all that needs to be said.

Mostly it's bias against Windows Mobile and Microsoft in general.
It's the same thing you see whenever a new Apple product comes out versus when a new Microsoft product comes out. The only exception to this rule is Windows 7.
hd2 is the first wm iv had and tbh, i totally love it. i can do so much more on this mobile than any other iv had. the only thing im gutted about is the drop in support of flash which is a pretty big issue for me.
now if only i could get that ps1 emulater up and running..........
The Legend is not as good as the Desire but then again but the HTC EVO 4G(Supersonic) is amazing, its like the HD2 on drugs. Its going to be my next phone and bye bye WinMo. I think the HTC Desire/Legend walks all over the HD2 mainly because the OS it is running i think is better than WM. The hardware in the Legend is not as good as the HD2 and the Desire / HD2 are more or less the same with each winning on certain things

Same here iPhone packed up and put on a shelf, most likely will sell it. Just love my HD2.
The legend is just the successor to the hero... nothing highend about it.
A lot of tech press appear to have been against WinMo for years. Hell, there's at least one Mobile Phone magazine in the UK (I honestly can't remember it's name) that states every month in its run down of handsets that HTC shot themselves in the foot by NOT providing a MicroSD card in the packaging (forget the fact that they do) and nearly all of the reviews I've read have said that WinMo 6.5 is too clunky (you hardly ever see it under the wonderful Sense UI). Even though they piss all over the phone they still give it a high score. The press does its best to warn everyone away from WinMo and to be honest Microsoft is doing a good job of warning future buyers against buying Windows Phone 7 Series devices by demanding everyone uses an extremely boring business interface and telling everyone that it definately isn't a business phone (WinMo is a business OS IMHO).
Regards.

[QUESTION] HD2, Andriod and Desire

Hey...
It might be a noobish question but I just couldn't find a decent answer:
With the release of the HTC Desire, since its very alike the HD2 hardware-wise, is there any chance of it helping with the release of a working Android ROM for the HD2?
I really want to get rid of WinMo 6.5... I hate it...
Thanks
Has been answered many times before, you should have searched.
Anyway, the answer is no, its not easier. And its not magically going to happen overnight either.
Mods will close this.

The HD2 is my first smartphone, I bought it because the superb hardware... I didn't know Windows Mobile suck that bad and I also suffered from lack of experience...
Apparently hardware is not nearly enough...
Now that there will be no WinMo 7 no one wants to buy it, at least not in a price I think is worthy...
I thought, hey, if there's a chance I can get Android on this device why not look into it...
I truly hope this day will come; for now I am managing with WinMo...

Flash CleanEX and you will see that WM can be fast!
It would have taken a short amount of time (30 mins) to go to a store and demo the phone, or research on the internet, read reviews, watch videos, post your questions BEFORE going out and buying the phone and then moaning how much you hate it.
Society now apparently is made up of people who are unable to make decisions for themselves even when the pertinent facts are readily available.

I actually research most everything I buy... especially expensive things. It pisses my girlfriend off to no end when I sit and compare different brands or features on things and not just make a quick decision.
I was watching and reading about the HD2 for almost 6 months before I finally got it (as it wasn't released in the US until recently). I love Windows Mobile. I find it to be the most versatile, customizable mobile OS and I'm very upset that MS is changing all that when Windows Phone 7 comes.

I wish I could rate you up like the comments on DailyTech!
Anyway, I'm not sure I understand all the WinMo haters. I read these reviews of the HD2 saying how amazing the hardware is, but the OS sucks... Yet they don't give any reasons the OS sucks.
Sure, I can see a year or two ago, back in the 6.0/6.1 days saying it is ugly... Still, what does ugly keep you from doing? Showing your phone off to the other shallow people around you?
Then I hear "OOOoo, the Marketplace sux0rs!" and I wonder to myself, how did ANYONE survive before a "marketplace." Oh yeah, search online and find what you want, I remember now. Do that, and you'll find that WinMo has a HUGE application pool to draw from.
Now it is "Oh it sux cause it is dead thanks to WP7." Sorry, another lame excuse. Why? Because all WP7 does for anyone, is give it a fancy interface, that if you don't like it... Well, MS says screw you!
So to the OP looking for Android on your HD2, give your HD2 away and buy an Android phone, or help port Android over to the HD2. Just don't come bawling your eyes out to a group who has lived and breathed WinMo for years and say you hate it because it sucks. Maybe it sucks because YOU aren't smart enough to figure it out.
This says it best:
"I can't tell you how frustrated I used to get at supposedly smart people who couldn't care less about power features but instead chose the "smartphone for dummies" (iphone). In time I realized it was their choice and that people for the most part don't want to think in fact most people spend their day trying to find ways not to think."

Agreed. I've been using WinMo since 2003... before they were all phones and were call pocket pcs. And that's what they are... basicly a pc that fits in your pocket. Now they are even more... they're phones now, too. But people need to remember that they are still pocket pcs and have the same type of learning curve a full pc does. They operate just like windows pcs do.
WinMo was designed as a pocket pc originally, not a phone. Android and iphones, etc were designed to be phones from the beginning. They don't have the same pc functionality like WinMo does. It's a shame that WinMo is nearing the end of it's development life by ms. WP7 is going to be a dumbed down phone now just like the rest.

Can Android be put on an HTC HD2?

Yes, being able to dual-boot to Android on this phone would easily make it the undisputed ultimate king of mobile hardware
However, there's not an Android port for this phone...yet. It's being worked on, but it's ETA is likely months away

For me, yes, it's been 110% worth it. For you? Couldn't say.
Many people are discussing the HD2 vs Nexus 1 debate, but I think the real WM/Android decision right now would be HD2 vs the upcoming Incredible/Desire (both Android). Now, there will probably be a version of Android that eventually makes it on the HD2...but I doubt there's much chance somebody will bother to port WM to the Incredible/Desire.
I personally like WM and Android both, but for different reasons....and if I have to choose only one at the moment, it's gotta be WM for me. But I'm happy that I'll be running it on a piece of hardware that will probably be able to run both before too long anyway
Thanks for the input. When is the HTC Desire/Incredible coming to T-Mobile?

Yes.
I'm a big fan of Android and this is my first WinMo device, so I have been surprised to learn that bare bones, I prefer WinMo. It's the apps which have been the biggest issue. Android clearly wins in that department, but you can usually find an app for the most used ones on Android. The functionality may not be as great on some apps and you definitely have to search to find them, but you can get the job done.

It's only a hopeful rumor right now that T-Mobile could get the Incredible, but I'd be surprised if at least one of those two didn't end up with Magenta badging at some point.

Another possibility is that Tmo will get a version of the Samsung Galaxy X, another Snapdragon-powered android powerhouse.

You would think being windows it would have a ton of apps, strange. Is it because microsoft wants lots of money to develop for their platform?

I'm on my 5th WM device [Ipaq 6315, MDA, Wing TP2, HD2] so theres one thing I've understood: 99% of apps ARE NOT in the Market Place. Seek and you shall find.
...and for you Android fans - I suggest you buy an Android device. There is no guarantee that Android will ever be ported to the HD2 and even if it was, who knows how buggy its prone to be.
I'll admit HD2 is really nice. WM sucks on it, but I can deal with it because I know devs will find a way to put android on it! Hopefully a solution for the pixelated pictures in web browsing too. <--- that's my only complaint with this phone.. : )

If you think WinMo sucks, you shouldn't have this phone. It will be a long time before there's a good android port for it.... by the time there is, there will definitely be android phones with much better specs.
Yeah thats what i been saying. That andriod port is a way off, even with the evo coming, the hd2 will be obsolete by the time it arrives, which is why i am trying to dump mine now.
Ahh thanks for the suggestions.

Bye bye HD2, hello iPhone!

Had enough of the HD2 now, and after playing with iPhones recently I have reaslised I made the wrong choice. The UI is just so much more intuitive, ok I have to wait till July for OS 4.0 for multi-tasking but who cares
bye!
and whats the reason for this information?
Good luck lapping at Steve's heels. You are correct in that the iphone OS is more immediately user friendly but the HD2 & winmo offer much more that iphone OS can. Good luck with that, oh and it still wont be true multi-tasking

This.
I made the exact OPPOSITE move.
I've owned the 3GS ever since it came out and for the past few months before I sold it it bored me to death. There's very little I can do with it, and once I realized I don't really play mobile games, the decision to sell it became very easy. I like my HD2 a lot more -- more customizable, and more powerful. Plus the small screen of the iPhone (resolution-wise) was grating.
great news for somebody who wants a second hand leo, not everybody affords a new one

I'm not saying I have proof. Thats exactly it, it just feels better for some reason. The texting, the scrolling, the fact that there is no ghastly looking WinMo hiding underneath.
Ah man... just joining the rest of the sheep. There are too many identical Iphone users about! BE INDIVIDUAL!
People who don't want to invest time in a more versatile phone should buy an iPhone, but they will get less for more. And don't expect the iPhone to be perfect, because it's not, it's that's what Apple's marketing machine will try to tell you, but don't count on it to work flawless.

Yeah well I had the iPhones before and I would never change my HD2 for them!
Youre making a 2008 expired move but good luck on that!
And get ur credit card ready to pass through the App Store because apart from that, there's nothing attractive about the apple anymore....
If you would like to donate to starving tech hungry kids, please send unwanted HD2's . . . to me, I'll be sure they get them >.>

HTC HD2 Android Exchange?

Hey guys-
Please bare with me here . I recently purchased an almost brand new T-mobile HTC HD2 from a person on Craiglist for 300 bucks. Well it turned out that the phone the person sold me was defective, i.e. a hardware malfunction of somekind , and because T-mobile thought I had bought it through them online, they said it was covered under the "Buyer's Remorse" period. So because of this I sent the one I had originally bought back to T-Mobile for a replacement, and they are sending me a brand new one in the box with all the accesories, factory sealed. But, since I had a chance to play around with winmo 6.5, and HTC Sense, I hate them both. So my question is, because I'm getting a brand new HTC HD2, should I return this one in exchange for a refund and buy something like a nexus one? Or should I stick with this phone? Or...should I exchange the HD2 for something else on T-mobile's network? Any advice would be appreciated. Btw, I payed 300 for the original hd2 I bought, but T-Mo is sending me one worth $450, so it's like there paying me 150 bucks, and they didn't even ask for a proof of purchase, lmao. Kinda cool that's all.
-regards, Bobofosho123
I had the HTC HD and ended up not liking it at all, I really wanted to but just hated everything about it in the end with the exception of the camara. I ended up trading my HD with someone on CL for a T-Mobile 3G Slide and I LOVE it! Im originally coming from an iPhone which I loved but got tired of Crapple and not having 3G speed and this slide is turning out to be even better than my iPhone. It sells for almost the same price as the HD. Just thought i would tell you that and maybe you can send your HD back (if you dont like it) and see if they will give you a slide.
Yeah, thanks for the response. And to he honest, to go from a high-end phone like the HD2 down to a mid-range phone like the slide seems like a ripoff to me. If it's possible, I may return the HD2 to T-Mobile and ask for a check or cash back, if that's possible, and just buy a Nexus One or an ipad (maybe).

The android port will probably never work like an android phone... it probably won't be good enough to use full-time instead of winmo for at least a year... so if you want android, get an android phone.
The guys here at xda are doing a fabulous job porting Android to the HD2. I've been reading their progress stream and a year to complete is ridiculous. These guys are making leaps and bounds. Recently they put Ubuntu Linux "successfully" on the HD2. No phone functions but what a triumph! Not going to be long for the full port. I'll keep my HD2 just in anticipation of their success. Thanks again developers for all your long hours and hard work. It's much appreciated.
and by the way, Microsoft is losing the battle against Android and will continue doing so. Microsoft's business plan is skewed. Get the product out by the deadline...even if it isn't finished. (Windows 95, 98, 98Se, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista...)The mobile 6.5 is the SSDD. It is PLAGUED with problems. I should know, I have one. Sorry for the soapbox everyone.
Hey, I agree, the progress on porting android to the hd2 has been, and this isn't an exaggeration, but I don't feel like waiting an entire year for a fully-working and bug-free android port. I think the smartest decision would be to go with the Samsung Vibrant, which has a screen that's almost as big as the HD2's and has android, and is for T-Mobile out of the box. So wouldn't that be the smartest decision? I do want an answer to that question by the way
The things is the HD2 just seems sleeker and more refined to me personally, sure the Vibrant may have the Android OS but I'll wait to get Android on my HD2.
Just my 2 cents.

the samsung vibrant looks to be a good phone. if you've been reading some of the reviews on it you will find out that it has a better/dedicated GPU for gaming and graphics then our own hd2, nexus one, droid, iphone 3gs. its hummingbird processor is also considered to run faster/smoother than our own 1ghz snapdragon processor as well. on top of that, it's super amoled screen rivals that of the iphone 4 and performs better in sunlight then typical amoleds and offers better battery life.
you make the call. i may purchase the vibrant out of contract while keeping my hd2. good to have the best of both worlds for me. i also forgot to mention that you also have to worry about gingerbread and froyo updates via OTA from t-mobile. much easier to get them on an android-ready phone like the vibrant. samsung is going to release this phone on all major carriers so updates are on the horizon. (this is for those who think that samsung won't push for updates as they haven't had in the past)

This sounds like a really bad idea. Ever hear the phrase, "Take the money and run" Take the HD2 and sell it on ebay, then go buy what ever you want. If you have no receipt and your not listed as the owner on the account you may get screwed. What if this guy got the phone on a payment plan? What if he got the contract deal and they won't issue the refund and won't send you your phone once they discover the error. Just think about it a bit and count your blessings because this whole thing could of gone a whole other direction.

Yes, they are making great progress... but there will probably never be a full "completed" port.... it will probably never run like an android phone. It's ridiculous to think it will. Have you used any of the other android ports for winmo phones? Some have been developed for years... and development went just as quick for some of them... and they are still a long way from being complete or "fully" functional. It will be awesome to have winmo, which I consider the best and most customizable mobile os, on my hd2 most of the time and be able to boot into android to use specific apps or play around with when I want. It will be somewhat functional in the next couple months (probably missing camera, and a few other things, and will probably be a battery drain... but usable)... but it will not be as functional as an android phone and probably not functional enough to want to use full-time on the hd2 instead of winmo for probably a year or so. Like I said... do some research... look at the development history of the other ports.
I also disagree about what you say about winmo... I've used it since 2003. I've also used android for a couple years.... Winmo is just as stable, and much more customizable and functional than android is at this point. I admit.. its not as user friendly... and it takes time and knowledge to set it up to use it's functionality. Android is quickly catching up as it's constantly being developed, and android was designed from the beginning to be a phone os. WinMo was designed to be a stand alone pocket pc os, and phone functionality has been added since the convergence of pocket pcs and phones... so the phone functions of it can be a little awkward or not implemented efficiently. But if you're looking for pc functionality, winmo blows android out of the water.
Don't get me wrong... I love android too... and can't wait for the hd2 port to be developed more... but be realistic with your expectations. There's plenty of past times this has been done to know what to expect with it if you do some reading. Android on the HD2 will be great... that's another great thing about winmo phones... they usually get android ported at some point. But if you want to use android full-time, its best to get an android phone. If you can't stand winmo, don't keep the HD2 expecting a perfect android port that runs like an android phone.

Yeah man, I'm watching some reviews on the vibrant now and it definitely looks like the phone for me, and I can deal with .3 inches less screen size, as compared to the HD2. Not to mention, the vibrant seems to have a better screen than the HD2 anyway. And to think I only paid 300 bucks for my HD2 on Craigslist originally, lmao!!!! I'm certainly going to get one hell of a trade here, woot woot !!!!

You got to remember, when i first saw it on tmobile website, the Vibrant was in the list and it was sold for $350 bucks. And that was like 4 or 5 in the morning. I got really stoked because i thought tmobile watned to surprise anyone by releasing galaxy s. But turned out, it think it was their mistake for putting up the price tag. Anyway, my point is, no matter how good Vibrant could be, the hardware quality does not come any near my HD2. No matter how some people hate this device, they must admit it is the highest quality device out there. Vibrant has plastic back, no flash and 4in screen is a joke compared to 4.3 And heard it was light which doesn't feel expensive. Anyway, i'm waiting for even bigger one HD3. I know it is a rumor, but HD2 was a ridiculous rumor, but hey, i'm holding one right now.
