Hello Guys or should I say lucky X1 owners.
Please tell me if this is a true iPod replacement I am not comparing this to iPod but the reason is a follows.
I used to have Qtek S100 and after a little music being played on it gets hotter (very hot really) and battery lasts for very few hours (not a whole day). As being this windows mobile at its core I would like to know if X1 suffers the same problems? Please tell me if you can play long hours of audio tones???
Kind Regards
Abbas
Very fair question:
The Ipod is unique, but not perfect because the limitation from apple.
Just to mention 2 things:
*You can not get your music from any place you like, must be from itunes
* No stereo bluetooth
Xperia has a powerful battery 1500 mah specs call for up 10 hrs talking time,
and up 800 hrs standby. But How long just playing music, turning off
everything else?
Well the question is not about features or limitation of a product, the question is does a device do a job which is an end user intend to do.
Has any of the X1 owner litlary played 2/3 hours of continues music and what was the battery status? also was the phone back burning?

I got a good 12h of continuous playback in 1 charge. Pretty good comparing to my old W850i that had about 10h playback. And the back was not hot on the X1.

12 hours of CONTINUOUS music? I'm sorry, I have to call BS on this one. No way, no how, not in a million years.

...why?...
Actually I am seeing similar times. This however only when I shut off UMTS and dont do anything power-intensive (GPS, Wifi etc).
At the moment my battery is good enough for a 45 min TV episode, about 20 mins of GPRS/UMTS surfing (checking emails) and about 6-7 hours of music.
it works okay, but its no iPod. Just not snappy enough.
My power lasts for using and playback of two tv episodes (2x ~45 min) and still have over 50 % left. My old atom life was after the same by about 25 % battery left. 3G is allways on. So 10 h music playback with screen turned off is I think absolutely possible. The battery of the X1 is great, SE did a great job here!
How is the volume and bass with headphones on the Xperia?
Equaliser?
Can anyone confirm if there is a sound equaliser on X1?
i use my x1 instead of my ipod. the battery consumption is low (imo).
to boost my soundexperience i just installed the "SRS WOW HD" driver .cab.
unfortunatly i forgot my earplugs at my girlfriends place and have to wait till tomorrow to test it.

Why not?
From Touch HD's review on SlashGear - http://www.slashgear.com/htc-touch-hd-slashgear-review-part-2-0721942/
With continuous audio playback, the Touch HD lasted around fifteen hours before playback ended.

15 hours, taking in mind Xperia's smaller screen and bigger battery, 12 hours shouldn't be a problem...
I was gonna say the same, I get about 8 hours w/ BT Stereo on,and texting in the middle, along with a two or three quick 20 min calls on my Touch Pro.
Plus Sony has always been good with battery life, although not sure if I can say its Sonys or HTCs work this time around o_o.
The xperia makes as a nice ipod alternative I'm sure. but you need a hefty card to really make it ipod replaceable.

not yet, when the audiobooster from HD is working then there will be.
Unfortunately SRS WOW HD doesn't work here.
Sounds brilliant if you use CorePlayer IMO.
Also with 8GB cards as cheap as £12.99 I should be able to fit a decent amount of music on it. Or at a push 16GB cards are around £40.
I never planned to use my X1 for music but it blows my Sony Walkman MP3 player out of the water, and that was the best quality I had heard on an MP3 player.
The catch is even CorePlayer is not exactly the best interface for choosing your tracks. Its also a bit crap that you can't listen to the radio and do something else, as the radio is only available via one of the panels and so turns off when you try to get into something else.

The Radio player only stops when you change panels. I've managed to read SMS and browser the internet at the same time as listening to Radio 4.

Hi, its maybe just me, you said Radio player stops when you change panels but then how you managed to listen the read SMS and browser while listening the Radio 4??? I believe to read SMS and browse you have to change the panel don't you?
Whilst in the Radio panel you have the two softkeys / touch screen to open Contacts or Web and at the top left you have Start and top right you have the task man to switch to different apps.
Currently have some random local station and the BBC website running.
Hey Folks,
during the weekend, I used my HD2 to view some movies - quite nice on its big display!
But what was a little strange for me: The battery draining was VERY high.
Once I read (don't ask me where), the HD2 shall playback videos for 12h with one charge.
But after "The Rock" (around 2:14h playtime) the battery capacity had only 55% (fully charged while beginning to view).
I used in the beginning the automatic backlight brightness (room was entirely dark) and in the second half of the movie I set it to 20% but the drain was not a little stopped.
I used the TCMP 0.81, the movie has been an divx/xvid DVD-rip, with an overal bitrate of 1496 kbit/s and AC3-sound the resolution has been 640x272.
What would you recommend to encode the movie to? (wmv, avi, which codec?)
What kind of player would you use (not concerning any kind of operation-convenience)
What think - it should be possible to reach the half of HTC's spec (12h) of playback time...
So any ideas / recommendations?
Regards,
Maeffjus
To be honest, that sort of battery drain is about what I would expect playing videos. 5 hours or so of continuous playback on a full charge is a reasonable target. Anyone who suggested 12 hours was a possibility was simply dreaming.
If you want to experiment with transcoding there are a number of existing threads on the subject, for example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=586324
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591473
It's safe to assume you want to use x264 as your codec and .mp4 as your wrapper, but beyond that I don't think anyone came to any firm conclusions.
If you don't feel like experimenting, then try this as an encoding application: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=478050
I thought maybe an other decoder would save some power...(CorePlayer, WindowsMediaPlayer...whatever)
And also I thought, using another codec would also help (in this regard: I do not prefer any codec, only the on who expands playtime with a charge .
Using a hardware-accelerated app (e.g. HTCAlbum) with the appropriate codecs will shift the load from the CPU to the GPU, but that won't necessarily cut power consumption much. Phone CPU's are very power-efficient compared to desktop PC CPU's, so moving the load makes less difference. Putting the phone in "Airplane Mode" while you watch might help.
I'm having one huge issue with this phone, and that is it not staying connected to the 3G at my house. I can sit in my living room and have 3-4 bars of 3G service, as can everyone else in my family, and my phone will just plumb disconnect and give me that lovely error message that you must "dismiss" before going on. Now if it was once in a blue moon I might be more forgiving, but it's all the time, literally almost every 2-3 minutes if I'm surfing. I don't really want to hard reset my phone because I'm not sure it will solve the issue, so if anyone has any advice here that would be fantastic. This is a freakin expensive phone, and I would hate for it to not work right after jumping through T-Mobile's hoops to get it. My friend's HD2 also has this issue and it's quite frustrating for both of us.
Now on to my question. Is it possible for Windows Mobile to even play 720p video? I have an mp4 copy of Kung Fu Panda for instance, that is 720p resolution and only 800mb, with a total bitrate of less than 1200kbps, and none of the media players (Album, WMP, TCPMP) will play this file at all. I didn't figure it would be that big a deal for this processor but I'm just curious, it's kind of a pain to re-encode EVERY video for playback on the phone. I have some MKV TV shows that are smaller files as well but 720p resolution and TCPMP won't play them either. Anything with that resolution causes TCPMP to crash. I was curious as to whether this was the phone not accepting the resolution or the audio track, which is a 5.1 surround track. I love this website and searched for both of these issues and couldn't find anything useful, so I have to ask y'all
Well, Homestar1217, I am also located in the DFW area and have the same problem. I constantly have to go to wireless controls in settings and turn my Data connection back on! You're right! It's VERY annoying!
It's probably the codec/container that you're using for your 720p file that's the issue.

Okkkkk... and in english? Please?
It is extremely annoying. If I hadn't already passed my 14 day return policy I'd be taking it back pronto. The new vibrant catches my eye at this point. Quite honestly I'm disappointed with this phone. Both browsers are sub-par, it took forever for me to figure out just the right bunch of settings on 3 different pieces of software for proper video conversion, swype has about a 25 second delay in the sms app before it lets me type, and mainly, it can't even stay connected to the network! I got this guy because of the processor, but it seems like all of the effort went into Sense, and no one tried to optimize the rest of the OS for the beast of a processor that it packs. Anyways, didn't mean to turn this into a complaint post. One 720p file is AVC with an mp4 container and video bitrate of 932kbps, and audio is AAC 6 channel at 278kbps. the other is an MKV with AVC video at 3476kbps and AC-3 audio at 384kbps, also 6 channel. I thought TCPMP would play those files but it crashed on both. I hope all that makes sense to you guys, it does to me

as far as TCPMP goes ... have you soft reset since you installed it? It crashed repeatedly on me before I soft reset, then, magic
if you want a different phne but are past the 14 day ask tmobile to send a new hd2 if you have the unit replaced 3 times in a 90 day period you are eligible for a handset exchange, I'm in this process right now... on my 3rd HD2 and i have the same data issue, after this i can upgrade to the mytouch slide,
*edit* as long as there is no heavy physical damage a.k.a. drop....
Just an fyi...I am in that third phone catagory. You won't get the phone you want...they offered me a Dash 3g! I said "That's not a comparable phone". They said that was the exchange phone and now they're sending me my 4th HD2. I'm having terrible lag issues while texting.
joe the lag issues might be happening because your threads are getting too big.i was having the same lag issue through the regular t9 texting then i switched over to swype in the settings and had a 15 second delay before i could text and realised after some help from this forum that there was too many messages in some contacts threads so everytime it gets to around 60 messages i just delete the thread. This happens with a lot of phones not just this one so give it try and see if it helps with your problem.
Ok, so I've had this GS7A a few days now, did one or two full resets to get used to what I could disable with Package Disabler Pro (worth every penny, seriously, since we may more than likely never see a working root) and I have to say that I am pretty damned impressed with the battery life. Yes we all know this magnificent beast has a 4000 mAh battery in it so that has something to do with the lifespan obviously, but I wanted to post about my experience and perhaps try and stir up some discussion since this subforum is basically dead for the most part.
I know most discussion is over in the GS7 thread since it is the same hardware in a different case but even so - it's actually not the same device since it has a smaller 3000 mAh capacity battery so, if anyone is interested in sharing their battery life info and experience by all means do it.
A caveat:
Right now I don't actually have cellular service with this GS7A because it's currently still carrier locked to AT&T and I haven't gotten around to purchasing an unlock code. I'm not an AT&T customer, never have been, and since I got this device from a trade done through craigslist the person I made the deal with wasn't the original owner - he did state he found the phone in a casino bathroom here in Las Vegas (that sort of thing happens hundreds of times a day here, seriously) and yes the IMEI is blacklisted so I don't know if the original owner reported it as lost or stolen and since the blacklist system doesn't differentiate then it doesn't matter anyway.
Having said that I will state that I use Google Voice for all my "phone calls" and SMS/text duties these days so I don't actually need cellular service as long as I have Wi-Fi. Google Hangouts handles all that just fine so, I'm stating this here so you'll understand that I don't use the cellular radio at all, the GS7A stays in Airplane Mode constantly and with Wi-Fi enabled (and yes Wi-Fi is always on).
Yesterday I did quite a bit in terms of actually using the GS7A: I listened to a lot of "police scanner" streams using Scanner Radio Pro, I watched the entire Presidential debate on the GS7A using CNNGo, I watched maybe 30 minutes of video on Periscope (Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert), listened to my own music (Opus 128Kbps encodes) using GoneMAD for maybe 3 hours total since the last charge, listened to a radio station from back home in Virginia using TuneIn Radio for maybe 2 hours, read a lot of articles using Flipboard, and various other things including hitting the Play Store to check for updates as well as checking Gmail maybe a few dozen times during the day. I also did two runs of Geekbench 4 and two runs of Antutu during this period before these screenshots were taken so those were a hit on the battery for max CPU/GPU usage for several minutes each as well.
Also, I keep the screen brightness at about 40-45% on the slider, but I did go out for a walk yesterday lasting maybe 30 minutes and set it on Auto to compensate, probably had the screen on about 5-8 minutes in that time at ~full brightness.
So understanding all that here's what I've got currently from screenshots I just took like a minute ago:
Looking at that kind of battery life, just shy of 2 full days and barely cracking the 50% point, I can guess that if I did have actual cellular service I could easily get 1.5-2 days use of this device regularly which is truly astonishing. The last phone I had that could give me battery life even close to this was a ZTE Zmax which literally gave me 10+ hours of SOT on a regular basis (the 1280x720 display on that really saved a lot of battery life, and the Super AMOLED on this GS7A probably helps considerably as well).
I am truly impressed by this, and I have to wonder what kind of actual battery life I could get with a) cellular service working normally and also b) root so I can do even more tweaking as well as c) an unlocked bootloader to allow for a custom kernel.
And I haven't even enabled the Power Saver or Ultra Power Saver modes at all.
So, what's your battery life like using the Galaxy S7 Active? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
EDIT:
Finally died and shut itself off but I watched a few TV shows off my Play Store Movies and TV account to keep the screen on and the Wi-Fi active and here's the final result - I never kicked in the Power or Ultra Power saving modes, I simply let it go till it shut itself off:
Mind you if I had just continued to use the GS7A in a typical fashion with audio streaming, Flipboard reading, etc, and not continuous screen on video viewing as well as the Wi-Fi I'm sure it would last 3 solid days without any problems so again I should (or anyone really) should be able to get an actual solid full day of use from this device reaching possibly into the 1.5 to 2 day range with cellular working normally.
Damned impressive stuff, it really is.
Just a followup. I wanted to see how far I could take this battery life thing so, I decided to do a full video run meaning:
- charge the battery to 100%
- set brightness at ~50% (since the way Touchwiz works it's hit or miss but close enough to the middle of the brightness slider)
- start playing a video in MX Player Pro with hardware acceleration enabled and the video on a loop
- give it a few seconds to get moving
- disconnect from the AC adapter
and then wait till I get to the 5% point for the battery.
So where did I end up? Well, here's the 50% point I just crossed a few moments ago:
Pretty damned awesome indeed. Yes I realize that hardly anyone is going to sit around watching videos for 8+ hours, let alone the potential 16 hours I might actually achieve (and again I don't use the power/ultra power saving modes, at least not once since I got this Active). Here are some details on the actual video I'm playing:
- it's TimeScapes which is pretty damned awesome itself
- it's the 1440p version of TimeScapes, at 2560x1440 resolution so the entire Super AMOLED display gets a full workout, every last pixel without fail
- it's about 48 minutes 21 seconds long (again, I have MX Player Pro set to loop it over and over)
- it's an MP4 container with the h.264 video stream with stereo AAC audio
Here's the MediaInfo for those that might be interested:

I intend to let this one keep going till I get to the ~5% point and then take another set of screenshots and see just how far this thing will last and I'll update this post when I'm done. Wi-Fi is always on, Location is always on (high accuracy), my Google services are active (pun intended) and I get notifications from apps just for the record as well - I do check some things every 30 minutes or so (Flipboard updates, Hangouts messages, and some other stuff) that usually just takes a couple of seconds then I go right back to the video as well.
The Energizer bunny apparently has nothing on this Galaxy S7 Active.
Ok, here's the final results. When I got to 5% the screen dimmed automagically so I stopped the video then restarted it which kicked it back to the normal brightness (roughly 50% as stated above) and then I figured I'd push it about as far as I could meaning 1%.
Amazing... just shy of 15.5 hours SOT
I figure if I did this again and lowered the brightness to 30-35% I'd easily get the 16 hours and more, probably 17-ish sounds about right. Regardless for me, I've never seen any device get this kind of direct battery life but then again today's testing was very limited - strictly video playback of that 1440p video and not much else in terms of actual use. I probably used the Active less than 5 minutes of the nearly fifteen and a half hours for checking email, Hangouts, and of course looking at the battery stats to take a screenshot when needed.
The Galaxy S7 Active should get more love, it really should, it's sad that so many people dismiss it outright just because of looks. I'd take something like this device over pretty much anything else on the market today, and with battery life like this I'd still be using it long after other people's pretty shiny glossy slippery devices are long dead with no charge.
I might do this test again using a 10-bit h.265 HEVC 1080p movie here (Deadpool which is an awesome flick) and see how it handles that in terms of battery life and decoding, who knows.
Excellent performance, finding myself loving this phone !
How many charges/ days from new did you guys find that it took for the battery to settle in? I took my S7A off charge when I woke up at 2.30am this morning and 5 hours later when I got out of bed it had gone through 20% of its battery whilst sitting there screen off doing absolutely nothing.
I was horrified and I don't know if I'm worrying over nothing, I'm just a bit jumpy because although it is brand new, I bought it from ebay so my return window is extremely small. If it has a cooked/ defective battery I need to return it ASAP.
Of course I am aware that new phones take quite a few days, even weeks or months until they reach their optimum battery functionality but 20% in 5 hours idle seems absolutely crazy.
i would see what the main drain is in the battery info, as at night mine would barely drop a few percent ! ..
also, which country are you in ? have you ran package disabler and took down a few sill apps yet ?
maybe that you had autoupdate and was on WiFi so it was doing loadsa updates during night (as that is actually a setting!)
whats it been like since ... s this question poses more questions than ansers
Seems like I've got it sorted now. Only dropped 2% last night which is pretty good considering I have quite a lot of stuff left turned on.
I had already used package disabler pro to clean up all of the AT&T mess; it turns out the culprit was my MiBand and the software it came with. I've had no problems on any of my other phones, but on this device it seems that the apps that the MiBand needs to keep working properly were preventing the device from dozing or entering deep sleep properly.
Once I disabled them, the overnight battery drain went away. This is a real bummer because I do like the miband 1s, so I'm now on the lookout for an always-on fitness band with good battery life that is properly compatible with the S7 Active.
The miband 1s could not pair with this phone 100% correctly as a standard BLE device so possibly this was part of the problem.
BTW, Great Stuff br0adband - excellent job on the testing, really in depth study. I knew I was enjoying the way the phone had been working but hadn't tried any testing. I came from the Note series... had two Note 4s, one with Verizon, one with AT&T, a Note 5, which I still own (thank God) and two Note 7s, an original and a replacement, both turned in, damned it Samsung. I went back to the Note 5 on both occasions of the Note 7 fiasco and on both occasions, immediately noticed the battery life as the Note 7 also had fantastic battery life, until of course they'd explode! The last time I ran the Note 5 for about six weeks and couldn't handle it any more... it seemed like I was charging it more than I was using it. I went to get an S7 Edge, only the edge functions were driving me crazy. My AT&T rep said "Hey, have you seen this - you love rugged phones and long battery life right?" That was it! End of story... S7Active Owner!
Just completed a battery test with actual, normal usage. Keeping in mind I have a work phone which I use to make the majority of my calls, the S7A was just there for my personal web browsing and personal calls which amounted to about 10 calls and 25 SMS or so.
Force gmail sync set to once every 30 minutes, greenify installed and working properly, airplane mode NOT used at night so 4G radio was active the entire time, bluetooth on the entire time but only connected whilst driving.
I was hoping to crack 4 days, and I'm sure I could if I were to stop using the device but that's not what I was doing here. 3 days + 1 night is still pretty good for an unrooted phone with factory kernel.
Battery life is good on this device because of the battery size. Your testing is not accurate for real use because of the radios being turned off. But those are good results to see. The problem is the cell radio takes up much of the battery life just at idle, which is frustrating cause can't really disable this as a phone. Plus if your using bluetooth for smart watch or vehicle connectivity even as LE it uses a lot of battery. For the guys using package disabler which items do you think or recommend disablng that have helped the most?

I don't know what you are doing but something is wrong if bluetooth is causing extra battery drain. I have a Gear S2 connected constantly and headphones for multiple hours a day and my battery life is outstanding.

Couldn't tell you why but when using Moto 360 for a day Bluetooth is almost always listed under battery stats. Maybe it's Android wear..? Bluetooth isn't top drainer but it does contribute..
Hey guys - I need some advice.
I recently rooted my phone - then upon the release of Nougat for the GS7A I decided to kick the glitchy root to the curb and go with Nougat. I absolutely love it, and am getting fantastic battery life without any modifications.... For starters I have a few basic questions:
1) Greenify - I have the paid version but have never really used it without Root before... reading around I seem to be getting conflicting information on the benefit of using Greenify knowing that Nougat has Doze, and Doze on the Go built in..... That said - since installing Nougat I have been using Greenify. I also enabled all of the added features through ADB to unlock agressive doze etc.... Someone please enlighten me - should I even be using this? Anything to avoid or use in particular in doing so?
2) Package Disabler Pro - I do not have this app, but it seems to be similar to like a non-root version of Titanium Backup for removing/freezing apps.... Should I purchase this? is there any reason not to? Also - I've seen about 15 different versions all with similar names and all exclusively for Samsung phones... which one to buy?
3) Assuming the above is a worthy purchase - which apps should I disable? Which are the biggest drains?
4) I've seen several battery stat tracking apps - which is best for tracking usage/battery hog apps?
Here's the kicker. I want to be able to use my phone to its full functionality. I have the Gear S2 watch (use it constantly), I like using Samsung Pay as much as I can, I Bluetooth to my car when driving for music/calls, I use Amazon Music/Play Music/Spotify often in the gym/running - what I am saying is: I am not shooting for 16 days of battery life with 14 hours of SOT - and otherwise zero functionality of why we purchase these smart devices to begin with. I am simply trying to maximize battery life while using my phone to the fullest - by whatever means necessary. All of this in mind - anyone else like me with similar goals that can enlighten me as to you suggestions to meet the above requirements?
I appreciate any help!!
1)Can't really answer this one; I'm using it but haven't noticed as much difference as I did under previous version (where I had root + xposed).
2)The one called Package Disabler Pro (Samsung) by policedeveloper.
3)Here is a list of apps I have disabled: Please note, I am not on AT&T. You might need to retain some of these if you need that functionality; to me it is all trash:
AT&T App Select, AT&T Hot Spots, AT&T Locker, AT&T protect plus, AT&T Remote support, Briefing, Device help, directv, drivemode, email, facebook, facebook app installer, facebook app manager, google play movies & tv, Hangouts, myAT&T, Remote, Samsung Pay (my banking app has its own NFC wallet functionality which overrides android pay), Smart limits, Usage Manager, YP, Lookout.
There's probably a few more that I need to get around to but I've had no dramas or FC issues after disabling all of the above.
4)I have got GSam battery which is good once it has been through a few charge cycles but I still find it gives some pretty wacky figures sometimes eg. Screen on time. I'm not really sure if any of the apps like this are necessary as the new battery stats gives you a decent amount of info once you drill down; it is just organised better in these apps is all.
Wakelock Detector Lite needs a bit of config through ADB but will give you a picture of what is waking up your phone and eating battery. Unfortunately, without root there isn't all that much you can do about it. Bluetooth_timer and Bluetooth_alarm issues are still present in Nougat and still waking the phone far more often than is necessary.
5)Keep your screen brightness down and turn off wifi when you don't need it, check your phone via your watch where possible and consider forcing the device to use WCDMA if that is an option for you. Fully waking up the device + having screen on is when your battery gets eaten alive. I find the S7A to be a pretty good workhorse as is. The built in medium battery saving setting might interest you as well, the extreme one is a step too far but you can still use as normal on the moderate battery saving mode.

Thanks for sharing your experience and advice with me! So far I've got about 70 or so packages disabled and I have not used Greenify (yet) - only the built in doze app settings in Nougat.
I am still using Samsung Pay, Gear S2 watch, Bluetooth in my car/headphones, and haven't had a single issue with functionality yet.
The android system is now way down on the battery usage list and I just pulled 6 hours SOT, over 42 hours since the first charge.
Pretty damn good start and looks like I may have succeeded in my goals here! I will be running a few more battery cycles and tracking data with and without Greenify - and once I have more information I plan to start a thread on this for others to hopefully help educate others with similar goals.
I recently got a Samsung s7 but after some time I realise the battery is draining fast and taking long to charge, it can be 100% and the green light will never pop. After full charge it reduces within minutes of being idle. Sometimes it can stay at a certain percentage for a very long time before reducing again. Guys I need help to solve this problem. Thanks
Not all that good battery life.
I use:
Screen, ON, Auto - Full Bright.
Samsung Fit, ON
Google Maps, ON (Offline)
WiFi, ON (Connected to GoPro)
4G, ON
3½ Hours......
I have a TOMO M4 battery pack with TESLA 18650 cells from a 90D Module as a battery supply for my trail rides.
The phone is capable, but still is underpowered for its build and what it can accomplish.
This needs a case with a built in battery, this truly would make it a rugged phone for the outdoor enthusiast, same as the S8 now has.
I wonder if the S8 Active will get a battery case?! This would defo be my next purchase....
OR .... do the Oukitel K10000 build to it.
Trying to take a picture here from the mobile direct...
Not bad... better then my Samsung galaxy s3...I got 12 hours at best but those lithium ion batteries drain and die over time sadly....
This is with the weird work around root too... its getting the Jon done thus far...lets see how she finishes with regular use
Some more accurate stats...full day of use seems to be 10 hours with this root method...battery only 92% so I know it can do better!
I have a hard time uploading files on this website from my phone...doesn't want to work well
This is what I get so far...may have to update seperate posting
Hi everyone, I'm a complete noob to all this so I apologize in advance but I just sold my Nexus 5x and picked up a used S7A off of ebay and so far I'm loving it!! I was just wondering if the package disabler app that's been mentioned would be worth it for all the att bloatware or if I could just disable them myself and get the same results? My phone frequently gets really hot, sometimes uncomfortably hot, and was wondering if there were any ways I could potentially put less stress on the battery as well?? Thanks and sorry for the lack of knowledge!! Also not sure if it matters but my software version is only at security patch Oct 1, 2017. Not sure If updating to more recent patch would help battery life as well(?) but I currently am not on the att network so I'm not sure how to update manually
Software Section
Performance/Power Setting
I have been intrigued with the "performance/power" section of the settings on the Shield k1. I only got my tablet just a few days ago but have already found some things I didn't see mentioned on XDA. I'm sure this stuff is all over the forum buried somewhere, but I didn't see it mentioned so I figured I would post it for those interested. In this section I am going to show the minimum and maximum processor states for each mode under "Performance/Power" in the settings app. Before posting I would like to point out that whatever you choose for these settings are system wide and override EVERYTHING else that you try to use, such as app optimization or even gltools. If you set "Limit Frame Rate" under custom to 20, nothing will get you more than 20 fps in any game. Even if you command it higher with app optimization or some other way. This also applies to watching videos or anything system wide, so be aware.
Max performance
Min = 1224 mhz
Max = 2218 mhz
Optimized <------------ Most people should use this
Min = 204 mhz
Max = 2218 mhz
Battery Saver
Min = 204 mhz
Max = 1530 mhz
Custom **
Min = 1122 mhz
Max = 2218
**Custom turns out to be the worst choice of the bunch. First off the "CPU Cores" setting does absolutely zero. You can set the cores to 2, 3, or 4, and no matter what, 4 cores will always run. It does nothing to disable the cores. One thing to note here is that when you start disabling cores, there WILL be an impact on benchmarks even though the cores aren't turning off. I am not sure exactly what's happening here, but something is going on with the frequencies or something that I cannot detect. Next is the "CPU Frequency" which does work, however setting it to the lowest possible setting will only net you a minimum processor state of 1122 mhz, much higher than you can get in the other options. So this would not help you in any way for battery life. The max processor speed doesn't go any higher than the others either, so there is no advantage (battery life or performance) to using custom. The final section of custom is "Limit Frame Rate" and it works as well. However, limiting the frame rate is something that is usually done to conserve battery life, but since you are stuck with a rather high minimum processing speed (1122 mhz), then any battery life you may gain from the lowered FPS will be lost with the processor drain. Your best bet is to set the processor state to "optimized" as it has the lowest AND highest achievable clock speeds (for best battery life and performance) and then turn the FPS down under app optimization if needed.
App Optimization Setting <------------ Most people should leave this setting untouched (disabled)
All settings under app optimization work as expected except of course the Max CPU cores again. It does nothing. The Frequency limit does work as well as the frame rate limit. All options works as expected except turning off the cores. For the most performance and battery life it would be best to use the "optimized" power plan from above, and then go into the app optimization and turn down the Max CPU frequency as far as you can without experiencing lag. You can also adjust the resolution if the loss in quality doesn't bother you. I personally don't touch anything in app optimization. I play pretty graphic intensive games so need my processor cores to run at 100% because I hate lag. I also don't like running LCDs at anything other than native resolution so I don't adjust that. Frame rate limit is a waste as the panel automatically caps it to 60 (the max it can display) and I want to see as many frames as possible.
That leaves "Optimize System Memory". This has been a hard one to benchmark, but here is what I've noticed. With this setting enabled it seems that I lose 2-4 frames when the tablet gets loaded up. If you run an FPS monitor you will notice that occasionally the FPS will dip when too much is going on. Well when these dips happen and "Optimize System Memory" is enabled, I find that it dips lower by a few frames.
I almost exclusively do not touch app optimization. The only time I would use this is for a game that took very little resources to run (PVZ2). I would turn the processor clocks down to 50% to conserve battery, but that is about the only use I see for it.
GLTools
This is what I use to monitor FPS. I have been unable to squeeze any extra performance out of any game using this. The only thing this app can do to help frames is reduce resolution, but you can do that with the "app optimization" section in the main settings. This app does many other things for compatibility, but they aren't useful to me at this time. I just use it to monitor FPS, as FPS METER crashes the tablet in both the rooted and non-rooted versions. I was really hoping that forcing anti-aliasing to off in the games would help with the frames, but it appears to do nothing. I suspect that most of the games for android don't have anti-aliasing to begin with, which is why turning it off doesn't seem to help. Bummer.
Gamestream
I have figured out a way to get gamestream to work with zero lag. It's as if my PC was connected directly to the TV and sitting on the floor below it. I cannot tell that the PC is in another room and broadcasting over wifi. I have a decent home network, but nothing special. When I first set it all up there was so much input lag that I considered it unplayable. I have since figured out why and it's perfect. I can't even believe it every time I use it, it's almost too good to be true. The trick is that you need to pair your controller directly to the PC and not the tablet, this will eliminate the lag. When I paired the Xbox One controller directly to the Shield K1 over bluetooth, the controls would work, but there was noticeable input lag if too many inputs where happening in a short time. I then bought the wireless adapter for the controller and paired it directly to my PC via wifi and the problems were solved. This is another great thing about the new Xbox One controller, it has both wifi direct and bluetooth so you can use either.
Zero lag setup:
Mid-high grade AC router
Comcast 30mbps cable internet connection
Router connected to PC via cat 6
5ghz signal to the Shield K1
Xbox One controller paired directly to the PC via wifi
"Game mode" enabled in TV settings
With the above setup I have a 1ms delay which isn't detectable to my eye. Gamestream works better than I expected and I plan on using it quite a bit. Geforce Now looks interesting, but I have no intentions of doing any testing with it. I don't like monthly fees and I have tried streaming services in the past; there is just too much delay for me.
Hardware Section
Dual Shock 4
What a mess. This is one of the best controllers money can buy. It's comfortable, it has a touch pad, the analog sticks are amazing, excellent d-pad, it has the highest quality build, it's rechargeable, and it just doesn't work with android.... If you try to connect the controller directly through the bluetooth section in settings, it will connect and then within 30 seconds be lagging like crazy. I then installed "sixaxis controller" (requires root) and connected that way. Controller worked almost perfect with this app and it let me totally customize the controller. However some things were still broken. For example in the game Half-Life 2 Episode One, the d-pad doesn't function correctly. No matter what I try to do to the mappings, it just won't work right. It works in some menus, but not most. Too bad because this is a really great controller. One last thing to note. I connected this to my S7 Edge running Nougat (hoping that the new native gamepad support would do something) and it connected right away. However the controller did absolutely nothing. I could see that it was connected and it showed up in the bluetooth menu, but no buttons would respond and games wouldn't detect it. Too bad.
Nvidia Shield Controller (1st gen)
I did not test this controller for a very specific reason; it does not use bluetooth. All of the big-name companies have moved over to bluetooth. Sony has always used it, Microsoft just added it, and even the next Nvidia Shield controller is bluetooth. The bluetooth option has lower bandwidth and less range than the wifi controllers, but is more power efficient. Who needs a controller that can stay connected at 200 feet when you can't even see the TV from that far? LOL There also seems to be zero difference in latency between the wifi and bluetooth variants, so I would pick a bluetooth controller for the energy savings.
Amazon Fire TV Controller (1st gen)
Well this thing sucks. I got this when I purchased my first Amazon Fire TV and use it occasionally. I hooked it up to the Shield for testing and I was not impressed. The d-pad likes to click multiple directions at a time (even when you are extra careful), I literally had it register an up and a down at the same time LOL. Not only this but the trigger buttons for some reason have compatibility problems with a lot of games, sometimes the controller randomly loses connection and you have to pull the batteries for 30 seconds to get it reconnected, the thing just sucks. It's something you use when you just want to play a quick game on your Amazon TV or hand it to a little kid to play some games for a bit, it's not to be taken seriously. Oh and the "dead zones" on the sticks are way to wide. You can move the stick about 25% in any direction before anything responds on screen. And sometimes for no reason at all there will be delay between button presses. Just stay away from this one, seriously.
Xbox One S Controller (bluetooth)
Well this controller comes in at a close second to the Dual Shock 4, but has one major advantage; it works. You power this thing on, hit the connect button, and connect it straight to the tablet in the settings menu under bluetooth. That's it. No special apps or mapping problems, or lag, or stutters. It works exactly like it would on an Xbox. You hold the home button and it auto connects to the tablet and when you are done you hold the home button and the light goes out and it powers down. All mapping is done for you and everything works perfectly (new info below). The analog sticks are great, the new d-pad is a ton better than the old 360 one, it's nice and clicky now. This is a great controller and it's on sale right now everywhere for $49.99 so you should pick one up. Also, if you plan on gaming a lot you may want to get the rechargeable battery unless you like buying a ton of AA batteries and swapping them out. These new controllers charge with a standard micro USB cable, so it's super convenient to get the charging pack.
**update**
Turns out this setup isn't exactly perfect either. It may be an Android 6.0 problem though because it doesn't act like this on my s7e running 7.0, who knows. Everything works as described above, but if you reboot the tablet, toggle bluetooth, or enter console mode (VERY annoying) the controller will need to be deleted and paired again. It wouldn't be such a big deal if console mode didn't trigger it because you can avoid rebooting and toggling bluetooth, but the console mode thing is a huge inconvenience. I really hope this gets fixed, either by android or microsoft updates because it really messes up an almost perfect controller experience. Also, to properly pair the controller you have to use the pairing button at the top. When you first power on the controller with the xbox button it will try to pair with the tablet, don't let it and instead hold the connect button on top of the controller to enter pairing mode (the light will flash fast) and then select the controller from the bluetooth list to pair. If you don't do it this way, the controller will never actually talk to the tablet.
Dual Shock 3
It's a Dual Shock 4 without a touchpad so it has the same issues.
Nvidia Shield Controller (2nd gen)<------------------ Buy this controller
I just purchased the new Shield TV and it came with this controller. What a great controller this one is, definitely rivals the Xbox and Sony controllers for quality and performance. However this has one major advantage over the other two, it works perfectly with the Shield Tablet, Shield TV, and any other bluetooth device that you want to connect it to (as long as it isn't a PC lol). This brings me to the one single problem with this controller, it doesn't work right with PC, yet. When you connect it to a PC via bluetooth, it connects just fine and actually does work, however the mappings are wrong so when you push up on the left analog stick it registers as a trigger pull or something. I have a ticket opened to get this controller fixed for PC so I'm sure it won't be long before they fix it or I fix it myself. I am trying to find the config file on my PC that generates when you install this controller, then I could fix the mappings myself. Unfortunately this makes Gamestream unusable as the input lag is just too much for me when connecting straight to the tablet. Once the mapping is fixed this controller will be flawless for any Shield device, Android device, or even as a full time PC controller. Even though this controller has the mapping problem, it does eliminate the bluetooth glitch that the Xbox controller has (where if you toggle bluetooth it has to be re-paired to the tablet), so that effectively makes it the number one choice for controllers at this time. It also has a capacitive volume slider built into the face of the controller and is rechargeable right out of the box as well. So far the battery life has been insane. I never even charged it when I took it out of the box Thursday and have been using it multiple times a day for at least an hour each time and it still has over 50% charge. It doesn't look like it has lost a percent honestly lol The controller also powers down automatically after you don't touch it for five minutes and then when you pick it up it auto powers up and reconnects for you.
Game Specific Section
Order & Chaos 2
O&C2 is a beast of a game, it's like the Crysis for mobile. The game doesn't even look that amazing, I think it is just poorly optimized (just like Crysis), at least Crysis is beautiful though. The game has a hard cap at 30 fps, so don't expect any more than that no matter what you do to the settings. I have found through my testing that the best mix of visual and performance is the following:
In game settings:
Graphics profile = Optimal
Render scale = 100%
Frame rate limitation = 30
Crowd control = slider all the way up
Dead Effect 2
This is one of the best looking mobile games to date and is optimized for Nvidia, which is great for us. This game actually looks almost as good as Crysis, but doesn't run as poorly. It has been optimized very well. There also happens to be a lot of graphical adjustment in the settings which allows for fine tuning. Through testing I have found the game to look amazing and run 45-60 fps (no matter how much action on screen) with the following settings:
In game settings:
Visual Quality = Custom
Shader Quality = Medium
Effect Quality = Medium
Model Quality = High
Texture Quality = Full
Shadow Quality = Low
Bloom = Low
Plants Vs Zombies 2
Pvz2 also has a hard cap of 30 FPS and there is no adjustment of the graphics in the settings menu. I have found that the game runs at a locked 30 FPS even with the processor at 50%, so this is where I leave it to conserve battery life.
App optimization settings:
Performance Setting = Custom
Max CPU Cores = 4
Max CPU Frequency = 50%
Frame Rate Limit = Off
Resolution Rendering = Native
Optimize System Memory = Off
Real Racing 3
Real Racing 3 runs pretty well. Most of the time the FPS stays locked at 60, but when there is a lot going on it can dip to 30 or just below. There are no in game graphics adjustments and I wouldn't turn the processor down at all because you will need full power when there are 10+ cars on the screen.
Do not adjust.
Doom 3
It's funny I remember 10 or more years ago when Doom 3 came out and I was upset that my PC couldn't run it LOL Now we can play it on a tablet that fits in our pocket. Anyway, I couldn't do much testing with this game as GLTools wouldn't show the FPS, it glitched out when I enabled it. The game has no graphical adjustment in it's setting as well and I wouldn't reccommend turning the processor down in app optimization without being able to confirm the impact. Game runs great though. The only issue I found was popping through my bluetooth headset, that could have been the headset.
Do not adjust.
Oceanhorn
What a great little game this is, really reminds me of Zelda. This game is very well optimized and never misses a beat. It looks and plays fantastic. I would like to see more quality games like this come out in the future, this kind of stuff can give consoles a run for their money. I have the in game settings turned all the way up and the processor set to 50% in app optimization and the FPS never dips more than a couple frames. This is a game that everyone should check out.
App optimization settings:
Performance Setting = Custom
Max CPU Cores = 4
Max CPU Frequency = 50%
Frame Rate Limit = Off
Resolution Rendering = Native
Optimize System Memory = Off
Pretty useful information, thanks bro
Good to see your reference to order and chaos 2, it's the only game I enjoy playing. I have bought a shield basically to stop hammering my Galaxy S7's battery all the time.

That's my main game, I play every day. You can squeeze a lot more performance out of the game if you start to reduce the graphics quality, but I'm big on visuals.
I have in my possession an Xbox One S controller, Dualshock 3, DualShock 4, and an Amazon controller. I will be doing a comparison in one of my reserved posts above. I also just downloaded Half-Life 2 episode 1 and was doing some testing with gamestream last night as well. I will be adding information about all of that as soon.

O&C2 is a very good looking game, I hate to reduce the visual quality too much. I do think crowd control needs a happy medium though as it can get rather chaotic when loads of people start letting off AOE attacks.
I tried playing the game on a 2013 nexus 7 which I also own, it just doesn't have enough grunt though unfortunately and is an absolute lag fest. Can't wait for the K1 to land hopefully later this week.

I couldn't squeeze any more frames out with crowd control, where do you suggest I test to do this? Also would you mean by wait for the K1 to land?

Gotcha, I just got mine the other day too. I would root it immediately if I were you because it wipes the device and I had to download all my games again. It took me like 3 minutes to unlock the bootloader, flash custom recovery, and root it. Great device. I use an s7 edge and the performance is comparable, but the k1 edges it out. However you won't be playing on your s7 much anymore lol. Once you get used to the 8 inch and the speakers, your phone will feel like a joke, I laugh when I pick it up haha. I only use it as a last resort. The k1 fits into my back pocket so I have it with me most of the time.

Nvidia folding cover and stylus on the way.
I have been using the stylus and the flip cover for over a week now and they are both great. The cover is necessary really as there is no way to prop the tablet up without it. I usually yank it off when I am gaming or holding the tablet with one hand (that's what's great about magnets), but leave it on as protection when moving around and to prop it up for viewing. The stylus isn't nearly as good as a Wacom stylus, but works well enough and I definitely find it useful for web browsing or editing a picture.
Also, I have purchased both the Microsoft Folding Keyboard and Logitech Ultrathin Touch Mouse for when I need to do some serious editing or school work. Every human being should buy that mouse immediately at the very least. The keyboard is optional as Googles voice dictation works nearly flawless, almost negating the need for a keyboard, but that mouse, buy it. The top surface of the mouse doubles as a touch pad and works great for android. I can control the entire tablet 5 feet away at work with one finger or at home 15 feet away when it's connected to the TV. Check out the reviews for it, it's definitely worth it.

Guide updated with core information and Shield 2017 controller addition.
Really informative post seh6183.
Thank you. I also bought the new controller (kept the NSTV V1 as for now it's the same as the V2)
