I'm torn. Really torn.... anyone else facing this dilemma?
1) Do you want a keyboard? Yes->Question 2, No->Athena.
2) Can you wait until sometime in 2006? Yes->Hermes, No->Wizard.
That would be my logic.
I haven't heard about the Hermes......
I do want a keyboard. I bought my BlueAngel for that reason. However with the advent of the I-Tap input thing I would prob be ok without one.
Suppose I now have a third option to contemplate.
Hermes?

Some information for you:
Athena: XScale processor at 400Mz, EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM Radio, and a 2.1MP camera. No keyboard, just like the Magician, but it will be slimmer than it.
Hermes: just like Wizard, but has UMTS, front-facing camera, and a 2.1MP rear camera.
Not sure if they're dropping EDGE to put in UMTS, or if it will be a USA-friendly UMTS (unlikely, since we don't have our act together yet).
So, the Hermes is the Wizard's answer to the Universal, and the Athena is the sequel to the JAM.
I am unfamiliar with what EDGE and UMTS are..
However i gather they are some kind of 3G based technology, which I am not all that interested in.
I gather the Hermes will be a sort of 3G version of the Wizard. As I said i am not interested in 3G yet as i can't really see a use for it. As for an FM radio thats outdated now anyway! Surely it should have been a Digial Radio!!
In light of this I'll probably end up buying a Wizard. it suites my needs (because its basially a new Blue Angel) and I could do with a phone soon as my BA has almost toally packed up. But theres still nagging part of me that says may-be hold on for the Hermes.
Slightly off topic but I also breiefly considered the Universal. Until I realised it was THE single most ugly thing on the planet... seriously.
Lewis
Its not ugly, just huge!
I think it's both!
Especially when it's closed. Theres too much blank space around the screen....eww.
But anyway tis only my personal opinion ;-)

Is there any hope Athena will be released before the end of the year?

You mean O2 Asia? This is good news, but I was rather referring to the release of a US or Europe model (SIM-unlocked). Any announced release date?
Decions,.Decisions.
The release of the news about the Athena, or XDA Atom, has completely confused me to.
However I have managed to rationalized it this way.
With intellipad, quickwiting, software, (especially quick writing, once you get used to it) and my think outside blue tooth fold out keyboard. don't really need keyboard.
Besides which it looks pretty fragile and it is just another thing that can go wrong or brake.
Without the keyboard I also get a smaller slimmer far more pocketable device to boot with a much stronger all metal case to boot (shame they did not keep the silver brushed aluminium).
What else do I gain, well a much faster CPU, a far superior camera and a proper SD card slot over the wizard, ard 128 Megs of ram, the long awaited in built WiFI, a built in radio and of course WM2005 over the Magacian,
So the choice for me will be to hang onto my XDA II for now and hang on for the XDA Atom to arrive in the UK, I just hope it does and I can get one on 02 contract to save myself a few pennies.
Thank for the chat guys
Regards Ash'e.

I completely disagree. I have had my Blue Angel for a year and the keyboard is invaluable. I can type rediclously fast on it ;-)
Intelipad and Quickwriting etc. will never compare to an actual hardware keyboard. I use my phone to send 100s of SMSs a day (no really). Could NEVER do that without a proper hardware keyboard.

The processor in the Wizard has actually been benchmarked to be quite good. As someone else said in this forumn one day people will realise you cant just measure processing speeds in clock cycles. Take it from an Athlon 64 owner!
As for the camera they tend to be sh*t on all pocket pc devices becuse of the lense they put on them. Resolution doesnt come into it most of the time.
For me wanting a keyboard I think I'll probably get a wizard because it's a smaller version of my Blue Angel. Though it'll probably be on ebay when the Hermes comes out
Lewis
Have you tried Quickwriting Yet!
It may seem strange but I can beat most people on a slide out keyboard using quickwriting, it takes quite a lot of getting used to but once you get the knack it is unbelievabley quick.
You never take your stylus of the pad and it very quickly forms a highly efficient shorthand as you start to use it properly.
give it a try, don't try to rush & practice a litte bit each day and I guarantee that you will be pleasantly surprised within a couple of weeks plus because you don't take you're stylus of the pad you can use it on moviny London buses, whilst you are stood up in rush hour traffic between stops like I am now..

It has not even been announced yet by O2 UK: will they really release a phone less than one month after announcement?
Are O2 phones sim-locked?
They Want it, just can't get it.
Just finished having supper with an O2 UK director (not marketing Dept), it appears that they do feel that that the XDA Atom, is going to be the ultimate lifestyle device & accessory, and a little more robust & a tadge more pocket friendly than the wizard & they are going to eventually add it to there UK product portfolio.
However with the device not even released yet & no real UK release dates truthfully on the horizon, & in there words: "our current XDA range is becoming slightly dated & cumbersome", they need to do something, and the Exec & Mini Pro appear to be the temporary solutions, until the Atom is released that is.
So I will forgoe the Mini Pro for now & stick to my dated XDA IIs in the hope that they secure some Atom stock and release dates soon, also have spoken to people who already have their Wizards and the general concensus is that the slide out keyboard is very fragile, so I think it is time to start investigating when & how to lay my hands on an XDA Atom. I still want that holy grail of smartphones & I think the Atom is going to be pretty damn close to it so.
It always taken more courage to dare to be right, than fear to be wrong.
So by hook or by crook Atom it is then.
Regards Ash'e
Hmmm.
I remain unconvinced by the Atom/Athena.
If I wait for anything I'll wait for the Hermes. It actually brings something new to the table.
Decisions Decisions!

ATHENA
THE GODDESS OF WISDOM WHO WILL REIGN OVER ALL.
BLESS-UP.
Things look clearer now
After reading the reviews other people have given about there Recently purchased Wizards on the other forum I passed this comment:
Fantastic reviews chaps, everything I wanted to here, so in light of all that when and how can we all get our hands on HTC Athenas or XDA Atoms, it would appear every gripe here would be answered quite easily by purchasing an Atom, better size, lack of keyboard, faster CPU, more robust and ergonomic build and feel, 2.0 camera, these are you're thoughts not mine, all we all really wanted anyway was a HTC Magician with Built in WiFi, 128 megs of ram and WM2005 and in the Atom were getting it and a few extra bits all in that Magician size we new & loved.
As I said in a previous post: It always takes more courage to dare to be right, than fear to be wrong.

Alright, so this might be a big long shot, but does anybody have an M8 first of all that they could rip and try to port? It runs on WinMo, but has been cloned to be nearly identical to the iPhone. The only thing that would be really difficult is the resolution on the M8 being scaled down to the Diamond. Any ideas?

Should just be an overlay app similar to Manilla. Once the phone is actually released (still vaporware in my opinion) we can break it down from there.
Not to kill your hopes, but the M8 runs CE instead of WinMo. Windows Mobile is a smaller subset of CE. Some apps should run on both platforms, but I don't think that you can take that UI. I'm also pretty sure that the M8 has a capacitive touch screen instead of resistive.
Hopefully it can still be done!

According to a forum on Meizu official website, M8 should be released before the Chinese new year in mainland China. I've seen on-line shop accepting pre-order.

I just saw a Meizu store today and got a peek at the M8. It was pretty cool I have to admit and darn cheap. the 8GB version is 2480 RMB which is about US$364. Thye didn't speak much english at the shop but they did say it runs on WinCE.
They showed me the dual touch feature and I was pretty surprised. I hadn't heard of this device before today honestly. The interface looked really smooth and intuitive. I think I want one. It's priced a few hundred less than the best price I can get on a diamond (I already have a diamond)
their website is www.meizu.com but it is only in Chinese. When I can get my GF or someone to help me read it I'll try to come back here and give it.

yeah, I found the english website. the girl at the shop said the site was only in Chinese so I parroted that. I'm going back to the shop tomorrow to test drive the phone
ok, I went to the shop today and the device is really nice. the interface seems very responsive and it supports English and Chinese natively. It has no 3G, no GPS, and no 16GB are available right now. Seems like a great phone but since I have a Diamond and the only thing I don't like about it is the screen size I'm torn between the M8 and the O2 Flame. I do a lot of spreadsheets and Word docs on my phone so the larger screen even at the same resolution as my diamond seems like the way to go plus it has 2GB built in and I've seen updates to support larger SD cards and run WM6.1. I think I'll buy an M8 when it has GPS and or at least a 3G that will work here in China.
Has anyone tried an external keyboard with the HTC Fuze? I have MS Office on my Fuze and would like to use it as a very small computer in meetings and such and am looking for a small external keyboard that can be used with the HTC Fuze. I want something that is good and durable.

Stowaway BT Keyboard
Hi. I own this http://www.mobiletechreview.com/tips/stowaway_Bluetooth_Keyboard.htm and used with all my previous devices (Dell Axim, Eten m700 and now the Fuze). It is very good, but I don't know if it is still being manufactured.
Hope this helps.
I'd like one on my Fuze too, if someone could confirm one works? It's just a shame these things are so expensive. Anything over $40 is too much for me in my book.
Look for Igo or Stowaway keyboard on Ebay. They can be had for around 50-60 bucks. The chassis is metal and the keyboard feels like a laptop keyboard. It can easily be placed inside your back pocket. Great item but damn expensive when bought new.
I use mine with no problem. Just download Windows Mobile 5 drivers and they work great. I'm using Windows 6.5 with these drivers no problem.

Do you have the drivers for this keyboard to use with the Fuze? I've got the keyboard, but when I contacted the manufacture of the keyboard about updated drivers they told me that they discontinued surport 2 years ago.
This one works fine:

They have a couple of those Freedom Universal keyboards up on eBay for 30 bucks. Looks like a good deal, as they seem to be 100 everywhere else. I just picked one up. Keeping fingers crossed that it actually works with the Fuze.
REDFLY
Check out celio corps redfly unit. I have the eight inch model it is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!! I use it for personal use with my tilt and i use it at work with my fuze. Absoloutley the best i can almost type twenty words a minute with this machine.
Well, I got the Freedom Universal keyboard in the mail today, but I can't get the drivers working on it. I'm running EnergyRom 3.0 with Windows Mobile 6.5, so maybe the newer OS is the problem. But, no luck so far on getting it to function.
purchased motorola es400. truly happy with this device, do think it's the greatest wm6 device with fantastic usability.
pros:
1. qwerty keyboard is easy to press, even better than any blackberry keyboard
2. 3.0 VGA tft screen: high brightness, clear display
3. perfect size to fit your hands, rugged phone, rubber frame give you best feeling
4. 1500mah standard battery + 3000 mah extended battery, a gigantic power house. so no worry about battery
cons:
1. wm6.5(hope it'd be a android one)
2. system needs to be more optimized, it took 5 to 6 seconds to shoot a picture after you press camara button!!
came more pictures.
1 more cons: 2.5mm headset jack
more pictures....................
Looks like that came from the Symbol line of devices. Lots of retailers use the MC-70 and related devices for inventory work and more. Very good devices for that type of work, but way to big and bulky for average use.
When Motorola bought out Symbol they started make a line that was more slim and trim in the hopes of getting executives/manager to adopt them. They'd not only be able to perform the inventory type jobs but also work as the default cellphone for the individual.
They are very rugged and well built devices. They can take a LOT of abuse and still function. If I recall the OS has also been "ruggedized." What I mean is that they sort of strip out some of the more advance, high end stuff that is more likely to cause incompatibility and/or crashes. I know this is true of some of Symbol's earlier devices. I don't know if it's true with the Motorola stuff... especially if they wanted execs to use these I doubt they would have done too much to 'em.
Great devices for Field Work, but I don't know they're usually not cutting edge tech or the most feature packed machines.
You've got Windows EH 6.5 on this right ? What build number do you see on it ? Just curious

Can anybody help
Hi,
Try following link, it should offer you a download link with when you provide your device's SN
http://support.symbol.com/support/s...eId=&dialogID=216462608&stateId=1 0 216464033
As mentioned above, these devices are really designed for data capture work in the business arena. Just the job, for barcode reading, warehouse pick list instructions, utility company meter reading, in the field survey response capture, customer order capture, etc. etc, but for personal phone use, it is a bit of a heavyweight.
Having said that, if you make a habit of dropping your phone down the WC, quite a common method of trashing it by all accounts, such a purchase could be a very good investment. It will survive that sort of thing time after time. You will have to give it some really serious abuse in order to break it.
This is where Microsoft is taking the CE/Mobile/Embedded platform.
Windows Phone 7 is now purely a consumer product.
..if it had DPAD and wm6.1...
sigh.
what's the cost of this, btw?
any kitchens available?
Regarding the cost, they're not cheap, but then again you get what you pay for.
Here in the UK they start at just over £400.
thank you buddy, nice work
mrteii, have you tried to shoot a photo at night using the flashlight? the light is distributed also into lens, making an ugly white arc at the bottom of the picture. anyway, the PenTile display is very nice. i'm currently using this device alongside with mc75a, which i like much more
On Sprint in the USA, the Touch Pro 2 is the best Windows Mobile device. I would get a Leo/HD2 if I was on T-Mobile.
Anyone one could get this ES400 rom ?

I just received this device off ebay several days ago, brand new, unbranded and it came with the extended battery. I've added a PNY 32GB class 10 microsd card and activated it with an at&t gophone plan. I'm getting the H data symbol up top so it looks like I'm connecting at 3.5G speeds and so far so good! It's quite beastly in size but I love the display and the keyboard! I hope they release an updated model in Android/WP7 form, but I kinda like how it feels like a computer on a phone. It's my first WM phone, my previous phone was a Palm Pre.
I still use a Motorola Droid 4, because I need the keyboard. I really do RDP (remote desktop) and do other complex tasks on my phone. There were sliding bluetooth keyboards for the S4 such as the OXA; is there anything like this for the S5?
Been searching myself for weeks and still haven't found one.

I don't know if this is helpful. But these are some products I found when I googled a little bit. I am especially interested in the magnetic keyboards, as they wouldn't make the phone much bigger. But...it seems the min order quantity is 100 pieces??? Hmm
AliliBaba is a distribution aggregator, sort of like eBay for companies. So no dice there. The others don't have any available. But perhaps soon.

I am dying to find a sliding keyboard case for my S5. I have never liked the keyboard on a touch screen for any device and miss my Droid 4 dearly. I have been searching for about three hours tonight and the only ones that I have found are either bulk order or pre-order from shady websites.
Update:
Found this one on Alibaba for minimum quantity of one, I think i'm gonna get it:

I went ahead and purchased one. Looks kinda bulky but I figured what the hell, why not give it a try. If every thing goes right I should have it by the end of next week. I will post my thoughts about it when I receive it and use it for a couple of hours.
