Rogers update...Do i have too? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

so I called rogers here some cliffs
-called technical support them stating i'm running custom firmware, in which the issue has been resolved.
-says he cannot do anything, will need the build number etc so they can do an check.
-says internet will not be turned back on unless updated.
*told him to transfer me to customer relations
-told retention rep situation
-told him my work i need to frequently access my emails through out the day
-told him to show me where it says I cannot run customer firmware, says he cannot
-told him even if i wanted to update, not compatible with win7.
-says cannot do anything
*end*
My question is do i legally have to update?

legally you don't have to do anything but they are allowed to suspend your data :S

There is no legal obligation. But I'd suggest updating your device. You can install the update via Windows 7. I know this for a fact because I'm running windows 7 and I updated my Rogers HTC Magic via Windows 7. It`s really quite simple but that said, I had run into a problem while updating and the tech support agent on the line said that he didn`t know what to do... lol. So I figured it out myself. It was difficult to figure out. But getting back to the point, you don`t have a legal obligation to update but they do have the right to ensure safety and by that said, means they can shut off your internet at anytime if it interferes with your safety.

If you are running a custom rom you can just edit your build.prop file and seemingly pass Rogers scan. I did this and have been up for more that 24 hours so it might be a fix.

I have the updated build.prop, and apparently I "passed" the scan -- rogers tech support is telling me that my account is no longer locked out. However I still have no data. I tried getting tech support to do a network reset, pulled the battery a million times, etc.
I suspect that it might take more than just passing the scan to get things working. i.e. Maybe a radio upgrade is required (although I've read postings vaguely suggesting that the radio upgrade is not the issue, so I dunno...)
Anyway I'm still without data. Just about ready to throw this piece of **** phone out the window and go buy an iPhone.

If you are on a custom ROM, can you even update to the Rogers one??

Update...
Yes you can do the update if you're on a custom ROM. I was running myhero2.0.5 when I performed the update. I didn't have to run sync as they played out in the directions either.
Anyhow, phone is running smooth but am wishing I called Rogers and faked my update so to speak. Hopefully I dont have to wait too long for somebody to break this new Rogers spl.

New OTA and 4g

My evo has borked 4g, but I never had the MAC issue. If I return to an earlier RUU and apply the OTA update, and then use the new root method, would this fix my WIMAX?
update your prl then your profile
I've tried that several times. I've verified that my MAC is correct through dmesg logs and the wimax_mtd. I've flashed the updates in several of the fixing threads, even tried the suggested fix in the DC thread since that is my preferred ROM. Nothing has worked.
I've started creating a case for myself with sprint in calling them and having them troubleshoot with me. So far they have have me completely delete my profile, reboot, and then refresh my profile. Once that didn't work they are having me do a factory reset and then try again. Not quite sure what a factory reset will do to a rooted phone.
I am nand unlocked with the engineering hboot. Currently I think clockwork is my recovery image, though I have had amon-ra on this device as well.
Well, I ran the .6 RUU and it had no effect on my WIMAX ability to grab onto a signal. I spoke to Sprint and while the advanced tech support unofficially sent me to XDA they weren't able to help me. She said to take my phone back to RS and get an exchange since I obviously have a software issue that Sprint can't officially fix. Also, she discouraged me from running the latest update, so Sprint is definitely aware that something is going on.

[Q] SM-N9000W major problem help

Hi all, I'm new to XDA so hopefully someone can help me. I purchased a brand new unlocked note 3 N9000W8 in canada from a cellphone store on Monday Morning. The phone was great and worked without a hitch and had android 4.3 on it.
Later on during the day, there were numerous news headlines regarding a 4.4.2 was officially released. So i decided to do the software update. With failed attempts with the message "Your device have been modified, Software updates are not available"
I checked my Settings > about device > status > device status and it states custom or modified. I am unsure how this is possible thinking it was a brand new phone. After some in depth reading i powered off the phone and check the android download mode (power, home button vol down key combo).
It states device status: custom, firmware: custom, knox 0x1 (which meant my warranty was gone essentially). I proceeded to call the shop i purchased the phone at, and the manager said they buy the phones from the distributor which unlocks them before it gets in their hands. so it must have been rooted prior to me receiving the phone.
Long story short...i know its been quite the reading already my appologies. I used samsung KIES to backup the phone and it updated it back to the stock firmware 4.4.2. I was prepared to loose the root as i dont need it. More concerned about the warranty. With the device and firmware status back to original i can now do OTA updates, however
Problem i have now is after the factory firmware upgrade to stock, my sim no longer works on the network. Seems as if the device has a sim lock, but it never asked for one. A local cellphone shop in st.catharines said there might be an issue with the baseband after the official update.
before the update, i tried all the suggestions such as unmounting the sd card, wiping cache, using supersu to unroot.
Can anyone chime in on what the problem may be? I go to school here, so if all else fails i will have to go back to toronto where i purchased it, and have them figure it out. just a hassle for me to get there without a car.
i just realized this was posted in the wrong section of the forum. sorry mods, can it be moved to Q/A?

When the distributor told you that the phone had been modified to enable an unlock, why did you say, "I was prepared to loose root as i dont need it"... the problem is fairly obvious, you had a software-unlocked phone and even though the seller told you that you would lose your unlock, you wiped it back to factory anyway lol...
honestly though, that's extremely sketch, lemme know that shop and I'll report them to BBB, you should never be paying for a cell phone that comes rooted unless your buying something from pacific mall, there are several options for you to unlock the phone, using software, hardware, or IMEI unlock codes

You had a pre-rooted software-unlocked phone (that was originally network-locked). Your warranty to Samsung is completely void, you should get something in writing (or record on audio) from the guy that sold you the phone as to the warranty of the phone.
Other than that - you can buy a network unlock code for something like 15 USD or so.

Samsung Galaxy Sky J3 SM-S320VL TracFone not flashing....

Here is the issue. A friend of mine had gone a bought a Galaxy Sky SM-S320VL from TracPhone. And had been using the phone without any problems until a couple of weeks ago. Then he decided to do a Factory Reset. Instead of doing the software reset, from with in Settings, he went and did a HARD Reset without unlocking the google account. And guess what, he can't remember the account information for that phone. And came to me to reset the phone. (As I had to deal with this problem in the past with other people and their phones.)
I have downloaded the only stock rom I can find for this phone and flashed it with Odin3. But for some reason the flashing of the rom is never done. By this I mean, the phone downloads the rom as Odin sends it. Odin reports a Success with the flashing. But, when the phone reboots. The system has not been reset and FRP is still active.
I have flashed only the AP, and the phone reboots directly into setup and shows a message about an unauthorized Factory Reset.
I have flash all 4 files in the ROM set (BL, AP, CP, and CSC). and Odin states the flash was a success. The phone reboots, goes to recovery and states Starting System Update. Goes so far into the update, then stops and shows Erasing. After a short time of showing Erasing it reboots to setup. Where again the phone shows the message about authorized Factory Reset.
I have used Odin3 v3.9.0, v3.11.1, v3.11.2, v3.12.5. And I have updated to the latest USB drivers from Samsung.
So my question is this. Has anyone had come across this behavior before? And how can I get past this?
The phones particulars:
Name: Samsung Galaxy Sky
Model #: SM-S320VL(GP)
OS v: 6.0.1
Firmware #: S320VLUDU2APJ3
Model #, as reported by Downloader: SM-S320VL
Note: As a strange side effect of when I flash all 4 rom files. For some reason once the phone has failed the system update, erased and has reboot. I have complete access to the phones User data area from within my computer. But, I am unable to access the phone with adb.
Hey folks,
I'm having the exact same issue as the OP. Odin does a successful install on the phone but I get the unauthorized reset message and then Wifi does not work when prompted on the next screen.
Is there a tracfone version of the rom or a fix that anyone here knows of? Thanks!
@drasnah
I have yet to get any kind of reply from anyone on this. Either now one knows, and is not stating so, or doesn't care.
I have seen the wi- fi fix in another thread.
Modify /system/build.prop:
ro.securestorage.support=true to false
Hope that helps!

First this is not a wi-fi problem it is a re-flashing of the rom problem.
Second, I do not have access, root or otherwise, to any of the system files on the phone.
Third, with the first two in mind this possible solution is of no help.
Fourth, Re-read my original post. I have given complete detailed information as to what I have access to and what I have done.
Can someone send me a download think for this phone i downloaded one but it won't flash it keeps failing
This device has been locked down by Tradphone and Samsung. It gives errors flashing even the correct stock firmware. It's a piece of garbage. NEVER buy anything from Tracphone. Garbage company. You'll never fix this issue. Only pushed updates will flash via software from sammy and tracphone that is built into the rom..

Not sure if that's correct? It depends on the firmware and odin version being used.

Need to know if works. Or if needing to settle for a different route.

J3 sm s320vl... tracfone root availability? Just bought phone hopefully got a good one to root? Or maybe someone knows who maybe be able to... please help
No updates? Interested, I have the same phone.
There is no solution for this phone. It will forever be a Trac-phone.
Yes, it nice to imagine what could had been. If there was a fix for the locked bootloader. Its encrypted, and is highly unlikely to be broken by anyone.
Do not flash the boot.image that some people have suggested
Although that method works on some devices such as the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5. In this case flashing the boot.image from an unlocked device does nothing but places the phone into an even more precarious situation, that makes it unusable even as a Trac phone.
While its true that this very low budget phone could had been decent with a custom Rom ,
You will not be able to get it working.
I have one that belonged to my daughter a couple of years ago and I managed to get it boot into the system again.
Its only function is as a calculator, or preschool game, the cellular reception and Wifi connections are highly unstable and will not stay connected.
Now it serves as my nieces play toy. I would donate to some poor person at the Salvation Army it if it was useable.
By the way, for anyone reading this.
If you have an old phone that is useable. You could dramatically help a Homeless people, by gifting them with a phone especially, if it has some minutes on it.
This gift will help them schedule job interviews, doctors appointments , etc and you will feel good knowing that you helped someone in need.
I have done this before, and will be dropping off a Blu phone, and Kindle Tablet this week.

I have permissible SE Status but can not achieve root on this device. Also, I have not found that anyone has had success rooting this exact model.
To be clear my device is the 2016 TracFone Samsung Galaxy J3 Sky model : SM-S320VL
Build S320VUDU1APG2
Hardware Version S320 VL04
I have found reports of people with S320VLUDU2API3 stating that the were able to achieve root and then assumed that it must also be possible with S320VUDU1APG2.
I am usually the guy that can figure these things out, very often before others. But I have had no success gaining root on this device using published methods. Also, I have not seen one example of someone with this identical device who gained root.
You are apparently the Wizard of these Samsung phones, so if you know of a definite way to root it, please point me towards the solution. I would really appreciate it.
I would love to root this phone, get it working again, and gift it to lady who was beaten by her husband and she is now living in a homeless shelter with her two children. She could use a phone to help with her job search. She would appreciate it.
At the moment this phone can will not keep a signal and I can't attempt the build prop solution without root.
Thank you.

See the thread below. Root was gained, albeit temporary. However I believe this is due to kernel panics which may be solved by a few build.prop edits. We had to do the same on the J327T1.

Also if you firmware S320VUDU1APG2 then why not just update it to the firmware that has been reported to work?
I have found one these phones left on a table of a food truck area, screen was cracked - the device was only getting the android guy with triangle on it, I done some research and found the stock rom and flashed it with odin; as some have mentioned in comments above I also experienced wifi issue, so I thought I had installed incorrect rom - downloaded a different one this was a combination file that was the factory repair rom used for testing the device, but wifi worked - it wasn't a fully working telephone it didnt have the app store, well it really didnt have any apps, but I found I could copy over apk files from my PC to the device and then install them, so the phones not completely useless or junk --- it could be used for something. I myself am using that device as a security camera using IP CAM app works great. I was actually using this device for quiet some time as my roku tv remote, because my actual roku remote grown legs and walked off... i havent tried this, but I am sure you could install a launcher apk such as "apex launcher"
well i wasted enough of your time today...

Newbie Help with an Unrooted, Unmodified Phone Stuck in Fastboot Mode After Update

I'm not really looking to do anything unofficial or invalidating or ultra-complicated to my phone. I've been looking everywhere for help, and I'm having a lot of difficulty, so I'm really hoping there might be someone here who can help me. My phone is a Moto X Style, and last night I tried to update it (I can't remember what the update was called, but I had been trying to avoid it like the plague because anytime I update ANY KIND OF THING WHATSOEVER something ends up going wrong. I got tired of getting the little pop-up reminding me to update my phone, so I finally decided to install it). I had connected it to the charger to make sure it would stay charged during the update since updates can take a while. But when I checked my phone next, it had gone into fast-boot mode with this message:
Start Up Failed:
Your device didn't start up successfully. Use the Software Repair Assistant on computer to repair your device.
Connect your device to your computer to get the Software Repair Assistant.
Turning it off and on again just results in the same thing. I thought maybe if I tried to do a reset to factory settings maybe it would work again. But unfortunately, I can't seem to access recovery mode, either. When I try to access recovery mode, the phone restarts and still gives me the start-up failed message in bootloader logs as well as a couple of messages in a purplish-pink that's all:
Version downgraded for recovery
Failed to validate recovery image
ERROR: Failed to pass validation, backup to fastboot
Fastboot Reason: Fall-through from recovery boot mode
I tried talking to Motorola Technical Support on their website via Online Chat. They were effectively useless, and at one point recommended I take the phone to a Service Repair Center...
In India. (I live in the United States, and I work as a cashier in retail. I can't afford a trip to India - might as well buy a new phone at that point. Of course, I can't really afford to buy a new phone right now, either).
I've tried doing some research on my own. The only Software Repair Assistant that seems to be available is the one from Verizon Wireless. I tried to get that to work but no dice. No surprise there, I guess, since I'm not actually with Verizon Wireless (I'm on a Republic Wireless phone plan cause cheap). I read that sometimes Republic Wireless can interfere with things update-wise and cause something like this to happen? But I couldn't find anything about how to fix it.
I have no idea how much it would cost if I tried to take it to some kinda other non-official repair service somewhere, and I want to try and avoid that option if I can. Please if you have any suggestions that won't result in my phone ending up in worse condition, I could really use the help. I'm so upset and frustrated by this issue. I knew updating my phone would suck, but I didn't think this would happen!

When it is telling you to get the software repair assistant, are you putting your phone into your computer with the message displayed? Just want to make sure it doesn't automate a repair for you.
Do you have an unlocked bootloader, rooted, etc.?
Gotta ask to know where to possibly start.

Do you have any idea what version of Android you were running (MM, N)? What specific model do you have (XT1572, XT1570, XT1575)
I'm really not sure what version I was running. The model is XT1575, though.
XT1575 is not enough to determine the exact error. Is your phone Verizon wireless locked SIM or all SIM type? If it is in first case, so hard to fix it. Bring it to Verizon.
If phone works with any SIM (2nd case), you can try to reflash your recovery via adb (google it). If it doesnt work, you may have to unlock your bootloader (warranty ended), flash the newest firmware corresponds to XT1575. If all is done without error, your phone may start again like a brand new. You have to set up everything again.
Do it with your own risk.

SC-02J (Japanese Docomo S8) latest (stock) firmware request

Late last year i was desperate to get my phone unlocked for an overseas trip (Docomo had changed their unlock policy), and so I paid an online service to unlock it. To avoid having to send my phone to a stranger, he said he had to RDP into my PC to run the unlocking commands. No problems, i had a freshly formatted PC that had no private data on it so i let him in. He installed a blackscreen driver so i couldnt see what he was doing but the phone was rebooting several times, loading software via ADB etc. In the end the phone was unlocked and knox wasnt tripped, i can still use NFC payments etc. Its probably got a few backdoor apps in it and i am aware of how stupid that was.
But, since then i have random radio crashes "Unknow error", and more importantly, the phone WONT update, it just always says "You have the latest version" even though there are several updates since then. I contacted the guy and he said "just update your software", but didnt offer anymore than that. I assume he flashed a custom radio firmware onto it, and its blocking the updates somehow.
So, i want to flash the latest update onto it via Odin. I do NOT want to root the phone, i do not want an overseas firmware, i want the stock Japanese SC-02J firmware, which supports the TV tuner, and Felica functions that arent in the overseas models.
Does anyone have software build PPR1.180610.011.SC02JOMU1CSF4 for me to flash onto it?
