I just bought a G1 with a broken screen on ebay to swap the mobo with my brick. The broken phone looks great except for that crack, so I decided to see if the warranty was still good. It is still under warranty for another 1.5 weeks!
So the idea is this. HTC will not repair broken screens..
But what if I intentionally brick the broken screen device and send it in for repair claiming OTA error? Will they throw in a fixed screen while they are replacing the mobo? Is it worth trying?? I'm thinking I could then just sell my brick or wait to sell it when they are un-brickable, to recoup the cost of one of the Dreams.

Anyone have experience here with HTC's warranty?
I have used HTC for warranty work and they were top-notch. However, I doubt they would cover it (the brick) as the damage was more than likely caused by impact, and impact damage is not covered.
Why didnt you send the bricked G1 in? It should be covered (assuming your not at the end of its warranty)
Sadly, the warranty ended about a week before I bricked it. It ended on 12.25.
Merry Christmas to me!
You have two broken phones and nothing to lose. Why don't you try dissasembling both and transplanting the top/screen assembly from the brick to the eBay purchase?
Actually they do fix bricks, I accidently bricked mine said "that it was doing an update and I left it overnight and in the morning it had the g1 logo only" and they replaced the mobo without more questions.
However they didn't replace the slightly damaged case so you might just be wasting your time.. worth a shot though.
I bricked it by flashing danger spl and radio wrong silly me
I'm aware that they fix bricks, but the bricked G1 is unfortunately the one with no warranty.
Transplanting the screen sounds like it would void the warranty because I would have to break the seal on both phones. Otherwise this would be ideal, because I could fix the screen and not worry about the hidden charge HTC would apply for a mandatory screen replacement.
Right now I've run into yet another set-back. I'm not a T-Mo customer and the phone is not unlocked. (I've never had a locked phone so I forgot they even existed when I picked up this one for repair )
If any nice T-Mo customer reads this, can you get me an unlock code from T-Mo if I provide my IMEI in a PM?
To get an unlock code you would need to pay £15 to t-mob.
There are services online though.
You can swap parts to your hearts desire, just make sure you do it cleanly. The one I sent back was a black case with guts from a bronze one and I was never even questioned about it. Just make sure they know you bought it from Craigslsit or eBay as-is.
It sounds like you are not in the US so it may be different for you but on my phone the Home button stopped working. I returned it to the original OS and then sent it in for repair. They stated that when I send it in for repair that if the phone had a broken screen or water damage that I would be charged a fee for the repair. I don't recall was it was because I wasn't charged this as my screen was fine and didn't have a water issue. I seem to think that the fee was $50-100 something like that. I didn't think it was that bad. As far as my issue. I have no idea if I got my phone back or a refurb.
I'm in the US and I was told that T-Mo has to tell the unlock code to anyone that has service with them as long as the IMEI is provided. Hopefully I can make friends with someone on T-Mo service.
The warranty seemed like a long shot so I swapped the guts of the working machine and the nonworking one. Now I have a cracked (but working!) screened brick and a locked non-cracked phone. The new screen price according to an HTC rep was about 230 I believe, which is a whole other annoyance. As soon as I get this new bad boy unlocked I'm going to re-root.
Sadly, until then I can only use it on the wi-fi I was able to setup thanks to adb.

Any1 know where i can buy a new display? I just picked up the phone and the display was crashed
you mean smashed? like cracked? google it. i remember there being a site that sells parts, also i know www.pocketpctechs.com repairs pdas.
yeah cracked, and i can put money on that they going to say that i have smashed it but i haven't so i can't use the guaranty have got over 6 pda phones and none of them have cracked
if you can convince your warranty dudes that it was a mistake they'll fix it for you. i remember a while ago when the nokia 3650 first came out, i got it and got into a fight, the screen broke. to fix it was like $175 i went to my warranty place and told them it was just in my pocket and i pulled it out and it was broken and made it seem like i didn't do it and blamed it on cheap manufacturing and they repaired it for free
but heres what you need http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~iMATE_K-JAM-512~area~repairs~item~IMT-LCD01.htm
Sorry I can't help you.
I just wanted to let you know I feel sorry for ya!
yeah thanks ... damn goin to call my waranty place tommorow morning and talk to them about this, if they can't help me out i need to buy the new screen for 159$... do you guys think i can replace the screen by myself ?
If your familiar with doing repairs, i wouldn't say its a hard job. Also i think you overlooked that link, its $159 and they willl replace the screen for you. you send it to them and they will fix it and send it back to you for $159
oh and my waranty is goin to be ok if i leave the phone to them?i meant for further waranty
i don't think so because all warranties are very strict about getting your device repaired at an authorized repair store. but if u send your device to your warranty place and pay for the repairs then yes, your warranty will still be valid. but if u get it done at a place thats not autorized then your warrany will be void(cancelled)
yeah... if im gonna send it to a warranty place here in sweden only the screen costs 368$ + the work, atleast 100$ more
I feel your pain, but think the thread title is a little OTT

yes it is, thats the touch screen part of the screen. i'd say go ahead and send it to pocketpctechs.com its $159. if not then find a local cell phone repair shop.
feel sorry for you dude, but the title is a bit harsh, hehe, and the pics are quite huge, lolz, i agree, the lcd may not be broken, but the touch screen is the one that's messed up badly
thats not that bad, i've seen a lot worse...
haven't said that it was that bad either, it's just cracked... and yes the touch screen stuff is dead not the lcd screen... it is possible to just change the touch stuff?
hi q-big this is off topic but I noticed on your screenie you have the ruttensoft call assistant app. how is it working on your device?
ouch...
Yes, the touch screen bit can be replaced separately, though I wouldn't want to be the techie doing it. Also pray that no fragments got on the LCD sheet behind it and scratched it up.
Regardless, unless it's inside warranty, expect to be out of at least $50 for serviceable hours alone, add parts, double their price... $150 sounds about right - add shipping.
Still a long shy away from the $500-$600 for an entirely new one, of course.
hello, i have had an 8525 since december and it has been great. except the other day i was going to charge my phone but i saw that the connector was messed up, and i have no idea how it got that way cuz my phone has zero scratches and hasn't been dropped. i tried using a 2mm flathead to fix it but it didn't work and i was scared to use a lot of force because i don't want to cause anymore damage. any help would be appreciated, thanks.

thanks for the reply, and yes the phone still functions perfectly. i turned it off though so i can save it for an emergency, as i do not have a backup phone.
Above we can see:
1
The rear view of the USB connector
2
That re-soldering will not be possible. This is a multi-layer board and these components are not part of or soldered to the USB Connector.
Above we can see:
1
The top of the USB housing and it's anchoring (possibly earthing also) soldering.
2
Soldering would be possible here to re-do the anchoring solder joints. This would be worthwhile if the connections are still in tact and the purpose is merely to re-anchor the housing.
Another view above of one of the anchor joints. Caution should be used not to dissipate excessive heat through the board - given its multi-layer nature and components on the reverse side.
Mike
EDIT:
In baller4ever85's picture it looks like one side only has come adrift and it may just require the anchoring joint to be re-soldered - but that assumes the contacts are still fine otherwise.
^thanks for the detailed pics. i don't have any experience with soldering. will htc repair it? my phone is also still under warranty w/at&t so i will see what they can do(probably not much).
I had this problem to the point I could not Sych or power the phone. I called at&t and it was replaced under warranty repair. It was replaced with an at&t branded 8525.
In the FWIW department... I did call HTC prior to calling at&t. Since this is a mother board repair item, minimum charge to look at the phone was quoted as $245!!! Thus the call to at&t.
If you can't get it fixed, I'll buy it.

I think i broked my display today. It is all just purple and gray lines when display is turned on and few one looking like cracks. When i turn off the display i do not see anything like that. I wonder is it physical or there is some hope left?
sounds like you broke the actual lcd display, and not the glass front.
All the usual suggestions, try a hard reset then different rom of course, just in case it is software, but it doesnt sound good.
Broke my glass (not the lcd, phew) saturday night just gone gutted. Theyre only £35 or so, tho, so i think im gonna have a go at changing it myself. I think the lcd's are about the same but its kinda hard to tell which is which on ebay.i
How much is new lcd? I am asumming they will rip me off if i send it in official htc service?
couldnt say. i tried speaking to O2 about a paid repair, they just spieled teh usual guff, no info. not contacted htc directly yet.
As for price, its hard to tell, do a search on ebay, and i found lcd for 30 something, and glass/digitizer for 30 something, but i also saw lcd for 120 or so, so maybe teh one i saw was the worng item, heh, who knows. Not had a proper indepth look yet, though.
I will try to contact my official service in Croatia so I will tell the price or i will try with ebay.
my hd2 looks so sad with selotape protecting the cracks. ;(
I had to get a dropped HD2 repaired the other day..
was charged $368 to replace the cracked glass by the Australian authorized HTC repairer , phone was still functioning.
LCD complete with the digitizer (touchscreen) glass is about $250 itself. It is almost impossible to change the LCD separately from "digitizer" even in service lab.
JFYI, cnn.cn/shop/htc-hd2-c-277_948.html here it is.
That is too expansive. I dont really now right now what to do ,should i repair it or not
They said at my offical service(in Croatia) that it is something about 240 $ . They said that you cant buy lcd without touchscreen (probably digitizer? )..
Will this work?
http://cgi.ebay.com/US-LCD-DISPLAY-...872974?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item4cf0f17ece
that's the one,(unless you have a tmous)
well, it should be, insert usual "its not my fault if its wrong" get out clause here.
Ok. And what about digitezer (or what ever it is called) thing ? Dont I need that too?
for that price you can buy a new hd2...lol

didnt you say touch still works? and screen isnt cracked? so no, BUT, the digi/screen and teh lcd are bonded together, and you gotta bake them for 10 mins at 50 deg to seperate them, , and so how do we bond them back together,,, heh. in which case a whole lcd/digi/glass would be best, but i bet theyre expensive. (Thats how theyd do it at htc repairs, just swap out teh whole thing as a single item)
I would look for a used hd2 to buy. Might be cheaper.
waiting for an apple fan boy to come along and say "htc sux and apple is the best ever" LOL
ive seen videos of people repairing their own cracked screens. Personally I would NOT do it for myself. I would rather get a new HD2 or an entirely different phone. Thats why i keep my previous phone(s) as backups in case of such event!
This is how it looks:

Did you drop it or have it in the pocket of your skinny jeans?
hey everyone
today, 2 weeks after I purchased my Galaxy S 2, suddenly I saw a stain
I went to the lab of the store i bought the device from
they claim it's some kind of liquid which got into the screen from the speaker above the screen.
of course they can't open the screen and check what kind of material is it because it will ruin the screen.
but there is no way a liquid came in touch with my device. I watch it very carefully
last night I only played some angry birds and everything was fine
and this morning (after charging it at night while turned off) this stain showed up
does anyone familiar with the problem?
got any clue what may cause it
here are some pictures of it:
h++p://img121.imageshack.us/img121/2877/img20110711wa0000.jpg

h++p://img31.imageshack.us/img31/641/20110711134712.jpg
if anyone can help I'll very appreciate it. thanks
I have never seen anything like this (embedding your first two picture)
Is it possible the case you have is too tight?
The discoloration is on the inside of the screen?

Looks like water/liquid stain the way its spread.

the case fits fine. I bought the device with a friend and he have the same case without any strange signs on his screen
I tried to remove the screen stamp - it's not that
the touch works in the defected area
and there is no hearing problem from the ear speaker
if it is liquid, considering the way it speard
it probably happened in my pants pocket judging by the angle
but it doesnt make any sense
at the store's lab they told me if they seperate the led screen and the touch screen to check what is this stain, they can't assemble it back.
but since they dont give me warranty on the screen i'll have to pay them for new screen anyway.
any chance I can send it to samsung so they'll do the check and if it's their fault the replace will be for free?
I thought maybe some part melted into the screen, but they said every part was in it's place

That's your best bet. If something happened during assembly they'd cover the cost. If they find it's not a defect you'll probably have to pay. But I'd imagine you're still better off having it repaired by Samsung directly. Someone had their screen replaced due to breakage and it was 300 GBP just to give you some sort of reference.
I have seen moisture cause this (it does not take much) and it will normally dry/clear up albeit very slowly.
the stain keeps growing
and i'm sure i didn't add any water/moisture to it in the last 24hrs
it's so strange...
I'm having trouble contacting the local samsung here
hopefully they won't send me to the store I bought the device from
I saw a display replacement on ebay which cost 85 GBP (will loose the warranty of the other parts, not to mention ruin the whole device)
if I'll do it at the store it'll cost 220GBP
it's a hugh bet to send it to samsung. it can cost 300 GBP not including delivery
any suggestion which path should I take?
it almost sounds like the digitizer/screen sandwich is coming apart?
You are out of the store return window to just return for exchange? If there was a return period (not some shady store with missing return policies), just demand a refund, tell them it is not from water. Demand to speak with the manager.
Does your unit carry warranty from Samsung? I think the way this one works, you send it in, they evaluate it, if they admit it is their problem they will fix for free. If they say "it is water damager, user error" they will offer to fix for a fee, and you can still refuse and pay for the return sipping of your phone. So I believe most you will be out is shipping both ways.
Swapping the screen yourself may require some good skills - do you have them?
no returning after turning on a device
warranty on hardware only except screen&touch (had to sign on it when bought the device)
I dont think I have the law at my side
I guess I can only count on the manufacturer
no store here gives warranty on screen&touch
and this store was the only one which let you change the ROM without loosing warranty on hardware
the device also comes with their custom ROM and no recovery mode (so no one will steal their ROM)
Is it cancelling my warranty with samsung itself?
update:
here is a fresh picture
h++p://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/28/img20110712wa0000.jpg/
you can see it grows
and this time i used a whole white screen and found something new
you can notice there is a burn of the status bar in the corner
That is definitely a "liquid" stain. Aim next time bud. That is all
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
you have any screen protector on this? clearly some layers are coming off
sorry you are having this issue
Completely off topic, but we should be more careful about mixing words like "yellow" and "stain" in the same sentence...
also off topic but if its yellow, I'd speak to your gp bud

Bought this about 10 days ago. Its been in its case since i brought it home. Hasn't left the house and it sits on my computer desk when I'm not using it. I live alone so no one else could have touched it. I haven't dropped it, sat on it, or used it as a frisbee.
I went to turn it on to show a friend and I found my screen like this:

The digitizer itself is fine. Touch screen works perfect and I can still do everything. No scratches on the body, no signs of anything on the case. Any idea what could cause this? I find it weird this would happen. Of course it has to be the most expensive part of the tablet.
Could I try taking it back to Best Buy and see if I can get it exchanged? Try doing a warranty claim through Acer? Or am I SOL and have to buy a new one? I'd replace the LCD myself but I did not find any replacement screens available yet.
I'm thinking somehow I may have flexed it a little bit, dont know how but I read that being a possibility. I didnt buy any accidental coverage through Best Buy. But I can still do Squaretrade, but would need to wait 30 days before I could file a claim.
If you paid with cc check with your cc company most good cards especially amex cover 90 days of theft damage. I buy all my electronics with my amex because of 90 day accidental damage and theft protection and they double manufacturers warranty up to a year. Very easy to file a claim much easier than my mastercard. Good luck.
Should have said I paid with my banks Visa Debit Card
That sucks
I dropped my Iconia down the stairs 2 months ago and almost crapped myself. It went in movie like slow motion. I bought the device from amazon and had only had it 3 days at the time. I told the guy what happened and have a great buying track record with amazon and they returned it and shipped out a new one as soon as they got posetion. Sorry for your trouble. The only thing I can say is try to find a new screen or "bricked" device on ebay. I grabbed one for my wife for $210.00 on ebay and all I had to do was recover the device.
Good luck

Go back to Best Buy. Leave the tablet at home.
Find the rep who sold it to you. Tell him your wife/husband/etc though it would be a good idea to get the BB insurance because you have kids/dog/nephews/etc in the house.
The rep gets perks for selling those insurance plans. He/she should be more than willing to ring one up for you since you're within 14 days. Should cost you about $100.
Then, magically, bring it back to the Geek Squad a few days later and have it sent for repairs. Most likely, like mine, they'll call you and let you come by and pick up a new one.
Thanks for the suggestion, I work with 4 people who used to work at Best Buy and they said all the managers in my area are experienced 5+ years and would want to see the device before they would do it
Looks like I'll be buying SquareTrade and wait til mid-October before I file a claim.
