Task manager - programs and services - HD2 General

I know that phone works simillar to computer.
In task manager you can close unneeded applications, and there is also tab with services.
The most of services on the computer are useless, on notebook it only eats battery. With disabling thee unnecessary services on the notebook you can get cca. 25min of battery time.
I guess that with the phone is the same. The most of running serveices are not needed, my only problem is: on the computer these services have descriptions and information about themselfs, on the phone there is only the name of the service
So my question is: which services can be shut down?
For example, I never use wlan, but I am very sure there are things like wlan client, dns client...running for nothing....

YAY!! Real task management!

So, downloaded pTerminal from the market.
YAY! ps and kill aren't blocked!
If you want to manage tasks enter command "ps" view the tasks.
If you want to kill a task type "kill <pid>"
Fun times... Finally, I can kill the tasks that are syncing and using gps etc in the background.
Edit: If you are interested in killing tasks to preserve memory, you should know by now that the memory management is automatic. There is no need to kill tasks to free up memory. If a task is doing something you don't want it to do though (i.e. eating up battery by doing unnecessary **** in the background) then by all means use this method to kill it for now.
I would like to see a comprehensive task manager in the future with not memory usage, but awake time for the app listed, network usage and a combined "Battery Usage" figure using all the other data...
That's good news. I wonder if "killall <appname>" works as well?
Har, looking at the process list there's a few on here running as root... buffers? Yes I do think so.
Good find! I'm sure a real task manager is in the works.

Not sure if this has been posted in the forum before but if you're connected via wifi (at least...?) you can run system/bin/telnetd in pTerminal then telnet to the IP of the phone... It'll drop you to what appears to be a root shell...

Thank you for the tip. It doesn't appear to be a root shell, BUT the process runs as root, which should be just as good as soon as I drop my own sshd in there... just have to compile for the right processor hehe...
telnet?

What did you type in exactly to get telnetd to run? Any flags you passed?
I'm trying /system/bin/telnetd from pterminal, but it never runs.

I had to run it twice before it ran, then once it started it's like a watchdog process killed it after a few minutes.
do...
Code:
# cd system
# cd bin
# telnetd
# ps
Then scroll to the bottom to see if it's running. THEN connect really quick, because it seems to die off fast .
It seems that unless you first cd to system/bin running telnetd doesn't work. It also seems t-mobile does inbound filtering so I cannot root my phone remotely... :-/

What if... you recompiled a VPN client for ARM and ran it on the phone, having it connected to your home network?
It would be a battery drainer for sure... Perhaps activate it with an SMS message? Or maybe a flag it checks for on a static html page every 10 minutes?
W00t. I figured everyone gave up on trying to root this thing. Now it seems the excitement has just begun.
That's reeeealy great!
Does anybody know how one can copy the files there? Regular 'cp' does not work there.

My Phone is eating away at data with no apps running!

Hi there!
I reached 10mb of data by lunch today, the phone was in my pocket with no apps running apart from active sync in task manager, I closed that and within 10 mins it had passed 11mb!
Any ideas?
Cheers
you have any automatic downloads running in the background like push email or any programs that access the net with automatic updates running like a weather app.
It was tinytwitter that had caused it. Howvere, TT was not running, weird but thanks for the reply!
I use a useful little app called "Nodata" and it allows me to turn off my GPRS and data connections.
It actually stops the ports and doesn't allow any data movement.
grab it here
of course if you want to use data again, simply run the program and re-enable.

Tiny Twitter is OK, but the interface is not polished and it is buggy. Try Twikini. Much, much better, and also free!
Twikini it is then, cheers for the responses.

[A] Ultimate market-found against Battery drain

Hey there,
yesterday i was searching around the web cause of my battery drain (my hd2 was empty in <1 day).
Then i found an market app: Battery FU
What does it do? It simply disables mobile data connection, when the hd2 is in standby. after wake up the phone, the network is connecting.
now i lost 4-5% of my battery in ~4h in normal use.
Thats great!
Give it a try and post your experience.
(And sorry, if this is already posted)

It's called manual update. I actually prefer to sync apps myself, then to have them doing it themselves all the time. So to each, his own...
Thanks for the tip, Prexx.

+1, Agree.
Why should my HD2 update the latests news all the time, when i just look every 1-2h on it? Makes no sense for me.
When i want to read them, i open the facebook-app or whatever, update the news and read them.

Manual sync is fine for news, facebook, etc but for emails/Google Voice you want push notifications.

Definitely +1 for that. I rely on my emails too much to have to manually update them every 15 mins, but it does sound like for some it could be really good.

FR008 - Apps starting automatically

I rooted to FR008 recently and I've noticed that a lot of apps are starting automatically. Far more than the stock ROM. I use atk to kill then but they restart within moments.
yeah, I might be a little ocd about having things running, but the bigger problem is that a bunch of them start up when I turn on mobile data or wifi. everything competes for bandwidth at once
And so it slows down the app I'm trying to use.
Any recommendations?
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
when you say they start up, what exactly do you mean? what apps are starting? do they just open and run in the background, or are they forcibly starting and taking over your screen? as for having certain programs start up when turning on some form of data, i've never experienced that particular issue.
don't blindly kill every task thats running, as the android os manages RAM and running apps differently than a windows pc.
i would highly recommend going to this thread and reading the posted links about task managers.
using a task killer on froyo is useless as the apps are restarted rather than killed
Sorry for the delay in replying..

They start and run in the background. On most, I don't notice except for when I go to my task killer. Others show up with an icon in the task bar when data is turned on (see below)

On the stock ROM, Google Maps and Internet started up. After FR008, those two plus Stocks, Gmail, EasyTether, Google Finance, Astrid Tasks

Yep. When wifi or 3G data connects it goes crazy. I get a sync icon in the task bar (don't know if it's Google finance or Gmail) and most of the above-mentioned apps plus, Yahoo mail (which I do use) all start up and start trying to grab data.

+1 - Get rid of any automatic task killer apps.
as far as apps opening and running in the background, as i mentioned, its normal. android handles all of its running processes much differently than a normal computer os. having a lot of programs running isn't necessarily a bad thing, as you'll find through reading the linked post.
with apps syncing as soon as you turn data/wifi on, that also is normal. they don't bother trying when data is shut off, but once theres an available connection, they are going to try and grab the most current data so as to be accurate.
do you use most/any of the apps that are running? if not, many apps that can't be removed normally can be removed via this method.

Would one of the "Autostart" apps be able to prevent this from happening? Often, I want to simply jump on and check my mail or the weather. With 3 or 4 apps starting up & competing for data all at once, I have to wait for a minute or so before I get what I want. This is especially annoying when I'm in an area with a weak reception.

I'll get rid of the ones I don't use, but I do use some of them so I don't want to wipe them all out. That's why it would be nice to be able to configure an Autostart app as noted above..

you could turn off background data, or at least check your sync options and make sure programs you don't want trying to auto-sync are un-checked. that way, the only program that would use your data connection would be the one you are using at that moment.
Turn off auto-sync if you don't want them to do that. As previously mentioned, as soon as a data connection is available the apps that are set to auto-sync are going to go out and get the most recent data. Turning that off will just mean you have to sync whatever it is manually. But, it will stop the **** from "starting" automatically, which btw, is normal. Just because they are in the background and "running" (<- according to your task killer) doesn't mean they are "running" in the true sense of the word. It also doesn't mean that they are ALL trying to grab data and suck up bandwidth. Maps shouldn't be starting automatically, gmail is normal because you probably have autosync enabled for it. Task killers are detrimental, would advise you stop using them. Also, I used to be OCD like that as well because of how I am on a computer.
The OCD is hard to get over, but I've stopped using the task killer.
I already had AutoSync disabled, but background data was on.
I am going to try something for a few days..
I have JuiceDefender installed, and one of its' features is to turn data on for 2 minutes, twice per hour. My thinking is that letting those apps start automatically and grab what they need on their own will prevent them from jumping on my bandwidth when I manually turn data on for a one particular need.
The reason I didn't do this before is because I get a pretty large quantity of email on my Yahoo account, and don't want notifications bugging me all the time. I just turned off notifications in Ymail (duh!) and will check it when I want. Presumably, with the 2 minute/30 minute data schedule, I won't even have to turn data on to see my recent emails.

What does 'my places' do?

I saw it under location services settings and added WiFi + Address when home but fail to see the value... Just another battery drain or does this actually help save battery life?

Its used for Google Now as far as I understand. It helps the phone know where it is if you have location off.

Not really, it's more an automatic profile switch thingy...
Yes, I meant the Samsung 'my places' and not the one you configure in Google Now... They are definitely different.
I bet it's 100% Samsung thing.
Those could be used by Samsung apps or any third parties via Samsung interfaces.
I guess it's the same as they are doing everywhere - replicating Google functions (playstore -> galaxy shop, messaging, now maps with home/work addresses...).
