boot in "safe mode"? - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM Development

some threads get close, but no concrete help found...
Stuck in "Launching HTC Sense..."
Anything I can do, besides from flashing a new ROM?
Using a cooked ROM, with several programs/tweaks on it.
build 28205, sense 1922, taskbar showing, bottom row showing, background showing
ROM had been running without a problem for days.
Removed of course SIM & SD cards to remove interference
Hard reset, battery removal no change

Did you tried to reflash your device via the tri-colors screen mode?

yep. just did, no problem there.
just would have liked (or:want) to figure out how to bypass HTC Sense launch......
when xda quickmenu is installed (as I had), then sometimes by pressing the taskbar, quickmenu's popup window is shown, thus access to a file manager, thus a possibility to solve a htc sense problem. This time however, something stopped BEFORE quickmenu started, and I was stuck.

Did you have access to the start menu?
If yes, launch a file explorer, install bsb tweaks 1.6, launch it. Put Windows Settings to ON, soft reset.
After the soft reset, go to start menu -> settings -> Today -> Items, uncheck Sense.

I understand your problem...
No pen-pen, he cannot access anything in WM if Sense freezes while loading at startup: I have the same problem and tried to solve it loading different ROMs and talking here on XDA but for now no result.
The only thing I know is that for some unlucky guys the couple WM 6.5.3 (or later versions) together with Sense is lethal. At some point. The freezing happens after a Soft Reset usually (mainly because is time for Sense loading) and then only a Hard Reset can get out the situation because it's there everytime you Soft Reset.
Look for this program: SafeMode. It works like a charm but you have to pay or use the 14 days test.

That's why I asked if he had access to the start menu.
I didn't have this bug and, so far, I'm in WM6.5.3 since the release of the HSPL.
Did you tried to install your SPB software on wm 6.5.3? it could work. Maybe with some graphical glitches, but it could let you make a backup before the HR.
Also, I've played with Manilla 2.1 and LUA a long time ago when I was young( ), and each time I made a mistake, Manilla was freezing, BUT, after some time, I could have access to start menu to deactivate Manilla and make some debugging.
Maybe you're trying to install some bugged mod or created for an old build of Sense.
Did you checked that?

Hard reset did not solve it either. Hard reset gave the exact same problem.
Tried WM 6.5.3 and 6.5.5, both with sense 1922. I'll try safemode, it it does what I think it does, it seems well worth the money.
Q: Anyone know how to make "XDA QuickMenu" start before Sense, that could potentially get me out af problemsituations as well (as QuickMenu, gives access to taskmanager, filemanager etc)

I had this problem a few times and traced it to SRS WOW. Specifically, SRS was installed, then the new SRS WOW control panel applet was opened before device was reset, it would hang at the same screen.
No idea if this is a possibility for you, just thought I'd suggest it.

tnx! I indeed have SRS WOW installed. I remember there something special with this app, where after install a reset is mandatory before starting the app. Since I use Tom's autoinstall which ends with a reset this shouldn't be a problem. I'll try uninstalling it and see. Then again, this app has been running a long time on many different ROMs without a problem. Wouldn't do the author right to blame this app

Solution related to Document Tab?
Someone considered the beta Document Tab to be the principal cause of Manila freezing and I quite agree. I'm using Artemis ROM since 2 days ago (WM 6.5.5 and Sense 2.5.1922) disabling Document index service and it seems to work ok.
Try to disable it by changing register value at:
HKLM/Software/HTC/Manila/HTCService/DocIndexerService
It's a String containing the DLL's name: turn it to something else (or blank value) and that should make the trick. I repeat: 48 hours without freezing and doing some Soft Resets just to try.
Hope to be of help.

I had with different roms/manila version this "freezign effect. Normlay after installing "my" software, so after a clean hard rest it was no problem.
So far I always solved it by using sk-tools and rearranging the booting order in the startup folder.
I put htc sense startup normaly at the very end of the booting chain.
This is certainly possible with QuickMenue as well.
In the meantime Iknow which applications are putting something in the startup folder and after installation of those programms I am changing it mit sk tools and do not wait till a reboot and run into trouble.
Best regards,
dingolino

tnx! read about sktools, but didn't know exactly what it could do for me. For others: http://s-k-tools.com/index.html?sktools/m_feat.html
I've got enough help for now. "safemode" and "SKtools" definitely helping.

TouchFlo 3D WON'T LAUNCH

Hi
Today I decided to try iDialer from Supware.net. After installing and soft reset, my device will not launch Touch Flo 3D. During the reboot, when the screen comes to the point where it launches Touch Flo, it now says "Tap here to launch TouchFlo"- something it has never done before. So I tap the screen it says "Launching TouchFlo 3D", but then switches back to the "Tap Here" message and stays stuck there. I have since removed iDialer with no success.
Can you please help me with this issue?? Something has gone terribly awry and I DO not want to have to perform a Hard Reset......
Lee
BUMP.....
I had inadvertently edited a manila file and it caused the problem. All back to normal now.
Thanks to Doug @ Supware.net for the quick reply.
Lee
wat did you do to fix the problem cos i had the same problem. I uninstalled the theme that put and still, its not working
Pls i need help
I have the same problem. Is there anyone who can provide a step by step guide on how to fix this?
Thanks in advance.
hmm... sounds familiar...
I remember having that problem after installing a "D3D driver" or GLES files from somewhere. When I removed them everything went back! But thats just what I did, so, what did YOU do?
overwriting (libgles_cm.dll and libgles_mn.dll ) in the windows directory will do this to you -cause these symptoms, that is. If you did do that, go into windows and delete those files and reset, thus causing the OS to magically replace them from ROM.
Tell me if that works, maybe I can push it on CNN -no, seriously, I hope it works for you guys...
Cheers
I had the same problem, I deleted everything and nothing changed so I had to make a hard reset. About 3 days ago i installed Pamas Transparent Slider and i had the same problem again. I turned off touchflo, removed the slider and then I made a soft reset and then tf3d loaded.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3452270#post3452270
The UAD-TouchPROLandscapeE.cab i made here contains the full TF3D files from the TouchPRO (latest version as of 03/2009)
if its a problem with manila this should fix it, if this doesn't work then it might be hard reset time
Happened to me too, tried to change the language of TF3D and he did not open, back to English back to normal everything!
Thanks for the quick responses.
I have a Touch HD and have tried to replace libgles_cm and libgles_mn files (libgles_cm is part of the ROM and cant be deleted and libgles_mn didn't exist so I installed it), but alas, still no luck.
I also tried The New Landscape, but this didn't load either (I can see the Gecko app while browsing and can run the exe which lists various apps) but I cant get any front end on the screen.
Thanks again for your input, looks like a hard reset is in order
i have no idea what i did to mine, i just plugged it into my xp machine to charge the bettery and some error came up on the computer screen about it not being able to synch and now touchflo will not launch. grrr i really hate HTC. Just going to do another damn hard reset, just like every other f'kn month. Using stock rom, if i had not paid so much for this pos i would have smashed it into dust months ago.
i had the same problem.. about the "tap screen to launch touchflo 3d.. i just uninstalled the spb shell and booted it.. started working

Unlock Extended Rom

Hi there
I've just got my shiny new Touch HD. Wow - what an upgrade to my Orbit 1 (don't laugh). I loved my Orbit but this is so much better. It's not revolutionary, but everything has evolved so well i.e. the big screen, no horrible frame around the screen, USB 2 connection, love the Drive mode thingi when you plug it to your computer ect.
Only problem is I can't get TomTom to work - I'll sort that out later...
Now to the question - how do you unlock the extended rom (I think that what they call it)? I want to prevent the applications from installing i.e. TouchFlo Home Plugin after a hard reset. I find the combination of SPB Pocket Plus 4 Tabs, Today Agenda (and a few other apps.) a much better combination for me.
Hope someone can help.
Anis
Did you try a soft reset when the waiting screen pops up after a hard reset?
Why dont you just uncheck TouchFlo in Settings-Today?
Thanks for the replies.
Ideally I wouldn't want unwanted apps to install. I know it's a fast device but I like to have a clean system.
I could reset the device when it's about the install everything (don't even know how to reset) however I want to keep certain things like the Black HTC theme and a few other things.

I just tried this last night and tried at multiple stages... and no matter what it insisted on installing all the bloatware. Any idea what I might be doing incorrectly?
When you say "wait screen" - do you mean the initial WinMo v6.1 green-splash screen, or the same display with "Please wait while we [something] for first time use"? I also tried at the Home screen before the customization begins, and while it was running... all still ended up with the software being installed. :/
I've read some great posts (here and Howard Forums) about using Total Commander and entering "\Extended Rom\" but that doesnt open anything on my device. Does that area need to be unlocked?
Thanks for any tips!
I think you need a custom Rom without all of the applications. I had one on my Omnia.
hmm...
typing "\Extended_Rom\" in total commander does not work.
those registry which hide/unhide and lock/unlock extended rom are not there too.
check the wiki, nothing about extended rom or customed rom which is meant for Service Provider specific.
Or is it because the HD I am having is tied to 1 provider, but it is already SIM unlocked which can use other providers SIM.
The original rom is lag, very lag, lots of rubbish in "\windows\" directory beside M$ original files.
How are the cooked roms around in the forum?

+1 for this plan. I'm running a lighter custom 6.5 rom (NRG) with none of the startup ui's. I've loaded Mobile shell#3 and it works very well. Quickest combo I've found so far for snappy-ness and speed. Battery life is fine with it. Try diff light roms without the startup bloatware and you may find something that you like.

No touchflo when booting

Hi there,
I've searched the forum but could not find this problem yet.
90% out of the time when I boot the sytem it does not start the touchflo software. I need to reboot it again after which it does start.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Cbx.
Same for me.. but for 50%.
I suspect S2U2 or maybe the SIM pincode form to make troubles with touchflo
Sounds weired but open the keyboard and type your pin in landscape mode. Don´t know why but it works
I have found this to work.
Put the device in Airplane Mode before you reboot. It works for me.
I have put an manila.exe shortcut on windows/startup folder.
Now all´s working fine.
By the way, this is a great piece of hardware.
Hmm,strange, never happened to me before, has been using more than 1 month now. Restart many times, and TouchFlo still start normal.
Maybe you have to many third party software installed :>
Same problem here.
Already posted in lots of threads around, looking for an answer. I even hardreset the device trying to isolate the problem. At first I thought it would be s2u2, but then I found that Max TTM places a "shake" program in the startup folder. After removing it, the device started loading TF3D fine (most of the time).
Since it happened again already once, my conclusion is that neither the shake program nor s2u2 are the true softwares to blame. I think it is something in my startup folder tho.
I had the same problem..
And i solved it, by uninstalling S2U2 I really like S2U2 but i had to uninstall this to get TF3D working directly.
This is what happened to me in detail:
1: Installed S2U2 > Reboot > TF3D Won't Boot
2: Reboot > TF3D Won't Boot
3: Reboot > TF3D Won't Boot
4: Reboot > TF3D Boots
Every 3 resets TF3D boots, otherwise nothing will happen.
When uninstalling S2U2 everything was fine.

I've found that if I put my PIN fix in the Phone settings so you don't need to enter it anymore upon booting the phone TF3D always launches...
And must say, when I use shortcuts to reset the device it won't boot neither, but when I shut down the phone and start it again it starts...
Ok, I think I just spoke too early. I give up.
Already thought that S2U2 was causing the problem. Thought it was Max TTM... but thing is, after using the manila.exe shortcut, the clock doesn´t work anymore (it gets the time when it booted but stays there).
So, basically, add me to the ones that have this problem. Tbh, I guess I´ll just hardreset the phone right now. Argh!
Hiho and hello to everybody (1st Post )
I have the same problem but with my TP2 it helps disconecting the phone from the cabel. The last 20 resets TF is starting.
Hope this will help you.

In FileExplorer you tap and hold the manila.exe file in the \Windows folder. In the pop up menu you choose copy. Then move to the \Windows\StartUp folder and tap and hold in a blank spot. Choose paste shortcut in the pop up menu. That's it, or at least one way to do it.
I don't think manila.exe is a hidden systemfile, unless the entire \Windows folder is hidden. Then you will have go to options and tic the show hidden files.
Same thing with touchflo. It doesn´t work. Any modificaion causes problems with tf3.
The method with starting in flight modus works fine and another method with entering PIN with hardware-keyboard works too. I think there is a bug with PIN-keyboard and i hope it will be patched. Anyway i´ve heard win 6.5 coming soon as an oficial update and then... maybe this tf3 problem will not be relevant for us.
I hope it´s sounds english enough to understand it.
Same problem.
I solved deleting the cleartemp startup shotcurt on windows/startup.
How many of you guys/girls, have the 1% battery cab installed?
I have same problem , but before install the 1% battery cab.
Also have 1%Battery thing, but had the problem before.
I feel, that if I wait a few seconds before typing in the pin until all icons in the upper right corner are present, booting touchflo3d works fine.
Please try!

Unable to Launch HTC Sense

Hey guys,
Right now my Leo is unable to launch HTC sense after I did a soft-reset after modifying the registry "Change - CacheSize to 4096" gotten from the Leo Hints & Tips thread as well as uninstalling Nimbuzz.
Also I also created a shortcut for Task Manager to put into the start menu and added it to the Manilla shortcut at the main page.
A couple of soft-resets still doesn't solve it, and sometimes it will say tap here to start HTC Sense but tapping doesn't do anything. Able to open the dialing menu but takes quite awhile.
Pressing the contacts menu gives the error message "The file "contacts" cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted cert, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file.
Any ideas?
Got the same problem.
Duttys HD Holy Grail
I tried to reinstall the rom but I can't connect with usb.
did you try that?
same problem here.
rom is 1.48 from stock.
also had the unable to launch sense error, couldnt find a way to solve it so i had to hard reset (AGAIN!!)
having to link 90 contacts with facebook manually sucks!
Does anyone have been able to solve this problem? I faced it today, I was doing some tweaks to my HD2, did some soft resets but then sudenlly it stops working, Sense freezes and has been unable to launch it, sometimes I can access to start menu but I can't load anthing, every link I tried to open tells me that the file cannot be opened either it's not signed or one of its components cannot be found. Nothing but the phone can be opened.
My rom is 1.48 stock.
Is the only solution for this a hard reset?

I faced similar problem before if I added the tweak of FATFS=4096. I did "hard reset" and then reinstalled all stuffs. I reinstalled all programs and readded the tweaks except FATFS one. The phone resumes normal.
It seems to me that the tweak of FATFS may not work on HD2.
Yes, actually I managed to remove that tweak without hard reset it, reverted it to FATFS=0 and everything came back to normal, my HD2 is now like it was before.
We MUST warn every HD2 owner to not apply this tweak.
I've cautioned this particular tweak on the main thread before.
changing the FATFS would hanged the HD2 (ROM: 1.48 Asia Region) and you'll need to hard reset to revert to the default settings.
Ohhh I didn't see that...
Thanks calyon!

HOw you do that?!
First I disabled HTC Sense from Home, then I move to the top of the start menu the registry editor (in my case it's SKTools Registry Explorer), then I turned it off and on several times and every time I tried to run the registry editor, when I was unable to run it I turned it off and on again, until I was able to run the registry editor, then navigated to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS and changed back the FATFS to 0.
I don't know how many times I've had to turn it on and off, but I thinks it's better than do a hard reset, specially if you don't have a backup or your data.

(considering you have a reg editor already installed of course)
Thank you very much vhjc... you saved all of us lots of painfull time!
Hello,
I just changed the FATFS registry value to 4096 based on the tweaks hint & tips and now my HD2 hangs and couldn't launch the HTC Sense app. Reading the responses above, it seems that it's possible to disable HTC Sense from Today setting in this kind of condition. However no matter how I tried to click on the "Setting" icon on the Start Menu screen, I only got the error window saying that the program is missing and we need to restore or reinstall... I couldn't connect the device to my laptop thru activesync to remove the registry since the activesync app (the switcher between storage device & activesync window) failed to load as well...
Could you please share how did you manage to go to the Today setting window to disable the HTC Sense? I couldn't see any other options since no other shortcuts are available, nor I can run any app from the start menu Is there a way to load HD2 standard WinMo OS in safe mode only...?
I'm really desperate on this situation and as much as possible I don't wanna hard reset my HD2 since I haven't done any backup yet...
Please help... Thank you very much in advance!
cheers
Im getting the unable to launch htc sense message too, even after a hard reset the problem re-occurs. can anyone advise me what to do??
Sorry, should have mentioned this above, I have not changed the registry setting of fatfs to anything other than 0, so this is not whats causing this problem for me. I have tried using a reg editor ro confirm the setting is 0 still no luck.
before the problem occurs i get an error reporting message saying theres been a problem with manila.exe

Literally just in the last hour or so?
Something very odd is going on here...
The same happened to mine 2 hours ago. Didnt make any changes to the device or installed any software etc Tried soft resets but no joy
Im considering a hard reset unless someone has a fix please
Mine has done exactly the same thing!! was working fine earlier on the way home from work, went to check it about 6pm and it had locked saying a problem with Manilla.exe had occurred... couldn't get it to do anything so took out the battery and ever since HTC sense wont load..
Everything seems fine, al programs work, phone is ok etc just sense wont load, was just about to do a hard reset after backing up data and removing card when i read this post so stopped...
Has anyone else had this?....

My Manila is doing something... but what?

Right... I know that my Manila is busy doing something, because:
it takes forever to load;
my phone is terribly slow while Manila runs;
battery drains like hell with Manila running;
if I replace it with the default WM6.5 theme, my HD2 becomes responsive again.
I've checked the Task Manager, but no process shows in there. I guess only processes initiated by the user would show, anyway...
So, my question is: is there any way to know which system processes are running, and how much CPU they're using?
Thank you!

What have you installed on the phone? I'm guessing that something that runs with Sense is doing it since this isn't a problem with Sense in general.
I've the same problem, and I think it's the update of facebook's contact
As expected, it's Manila.exe, running at 98% of the CPU.
I'm on stock ROM 1.61. List of the software installed:
Chainfire HD2 3D Driver Patch
ctrlPDA pinch2zoom
Mach2003 GpsModDriver
Microsoft TagReader (version modified for HD2)
PHM Registry Editor
NetRipper TorchButton
HHotFix LEO07268_621
HotFix LEO07664
Microsoft My Phone (updated version)
Lotus EasySinc Pro
Ganondolf CrayonPhysics
Google Maps 3.3.1
BsB Tweaks 1.6
M.S. Pearce ProcessManager
Started to exhibit this behaviour as I tried to connect to my company's network, but it has done it before in other situations where there were changes to the registry.
Is HardReset the only way out of this? Is it possible to re-install just Manila?
ccristal
If it were me, I'd uninstall everything in the Remove Programs list and do a soft reset. If you're gonna do a hard reset then you need to install everything anyway. I think it's something that you've installed that's causing this problem.
Let us know how you get on.
I have this behaviour as well from time to time but I couldn't think of anything causing it. My first assumption was "my phone sync" but I've deactivated it for a while but it occured again!
it only takes ~1 up to 2 minutes and then its back to normal and it's not happening frequenly.
really weird!!!

I can say for sure that it's nothing I installed, but rather something I did while I used the product. When it happened, I was trying to connect to a wireless network using a certificate. And I have done the same thing before several times, without any problem.
The feeling I get, reading posts here and there in this forum, is of a generalised unstability of Manila, which is a shame because it's a great app. Would it be possible to install a ROM without Manila, and then install it as an application, in such a way that, should it happen again, I could just remove and reinstall it? Is this pure fantasy, or is it feasible?
ccristal
If you think Manilla is the problem why don't you just switch manilla off and run with the plain winmobile interface to see if that confirms what you say or not?

Done. It *is* Manila. As you can see from one of my earlier posts, it goes quickly to 98-99% of CPU.
I've been experiencing this problem, too. I've narrowed it down further. It's got something to do with Manila indexing the MicroSD card. It started for me after I copied 8GB of music over. I've since removed it, but it still eats CPU. Popping out my SD card drops CPU to 0%.
*EDIT: FIXED*
I'm not sure what fixed it out of this, but I removed the HTC folder from my SD Card's Application Data folder, and removed any album.cache files and ini files in the My Pictures folder. Afterward, Manila.exe took up about 90% CPU for 30 seconds to reindex, and then dropped to normal.
*EDIT: One other thing*
As it turned out, there must have been something on my SD Card that was offending the index. A few hours later it was back to using the CPU. I cleared my SD Card, and formatted it, and the problem has not reared it's head again. I will begin selectively copying stuff back over until I figure out what it was.
Hey, I had the same problem. I've found that the camera and the photo tag, CAN'T read two pictures with the same name. That was freezing my hd2... Also, I tryed to rec a video, and a quarter of the vid was recorded... the rest was lost...
The manilla is a little bit buggi... so, be carefull.
REMEMBER: Check the picture count... or it will create a file example: img0001.jpg and if you have a file with the same name in other folder... You will have the same problems.
Delete album.cache to be sure.
hope this help
I too found this thread enormously useful - I was experiencing the same symptoms: very high CPU usage from Manila making the phone unusable. The problem only occurred with an SD card in the phone.
I fixed the problem by putting the SD card into a card reader connected to a PC and just 'tidying up' a bit. Not sure about the pictures with the same name (it's possible that I did delete some), but some files that I particularly noticed deleting were:
.MENC encrypted files from another Windows Mobile phone
"MSDRM" details - again from another phone
I didn't clean it up in a scientific way I'm afraid, so I can't pin down the cause - but it might be worth a try to remove these files if you're experiencing the same problem? (Naturally, keep them somewhere else if these files are of value to you - you may still need them in your other phone!!)
Hope that this is helpful!
