I just want to thank all the Android devs out there for their great work.
I had to turn in a college project today and my ISP decided I didn't need my internet connection (jerks!) and I was freaking out when I remembered I had installed a tether app on my g1. So I gave it a shot... AND IT FREAKIN WORKED! It was a little slow cuz I only get GPRS coverage at home but it worked like a charm!
so here goes a big fat THANK YOU to all the rom/app devs out there for saving my a$$

Hey guys i'm thinking about getting this phone or the tilt. Main reason is i know WM6 supports 802.1x wifi security modes, which my school uses EAP-PEAP. i dont know whether or not the g1 supports it. Does it? i've been googling for a bit and nothing comes up. Thanks in advance.

All I can see is WPA and WPA2 it doesn't let me configure it further. So I am going to guess no... I don't have any EAP or RADIUS routers to check.
But even if it doesn't have it... it can always come out later cause it is just software.
damn how long will it take........honestly i believe they released a half baked product anyway hopefully they'll do it in time before i get my tilt.

You have to remember this product has only been out a week and a half and already they sent out a firmware update. Most other HTC devices don't get updates unless its from WM 6 to 6.1
Google likes to release things that are just bare minimum and use your feedback to build the rest. You will probably see quite a few firmwares being released. Remember this is all to benefit you. While it may be "half baked" to you right now... in the future it will include all the things you need... but not all those things you hated about other OS's
oh they already have firmware updates out? thats cool. Thanks
PEAP and 802.1x
Developers! I wish that i could contribute but i'm not a programmer. I am however leading a group of students on my campus to use the G1 to it's fullest potential. Everything from Gapp's to media sharing. The issue now is that there is no support/options for PEAP authentication on our campus environment. We have some of the best wifi coverage of most campus's i've been to but it defeats the $200 bill of the G1 if i have to rely on the edge network.
Is there any developers I can test configs for? I'll be a tester and can usually report back quickly.
needed configs for campus:
-WPA
-TKIP
-802.1 and PEAP
-AD username and Pswd
Thanks!

It should work fine if you have root and set up the wifi connection manually with a custom wpa_supplicant.conf, the iptables thread in the development section would be a good start for reading what ya need to do. the default wpa_supplicant.conf on the device has all the settings possible in the comments.
Hi all,
I bumped this topic instead of creating a new one. So i hope this the right way. If i should make a new topic please say so. But this was the closes and only thing i could find about the topic.
Is there any information about getting RADIUS or 802.1x working on the G1. (My campus has this and i like to have internet access on my phone there as i do not have a data abbo).
I read that rooting your phone is a option, but i am not sure what image i should use and how to install it so i hope there is a way to do it on 1.6.
Looking forward to your replays.

I have connection now with a WPA-PEAP network. That one is working but the raduis (8.02.1X) still shows up as web
Hi
I’ve been searching for a Windows Mobile WiFi app that does the following:
When an application (namely Pocket Outlook) requires Internet access
WiFi app turns on WiFi and connects to a preconfigured WiFi network
Application (Pocket Outlook) connects to Internet, downloads, disconnects.
WiFi app turns off WiFi.
It is basically for situations where Pocket Outlook checks for email every 60 minutes and there is no Cellular data network coverage. Instead of tweaking the registry to keep WiFi on all time, I would like to conserve battery power and turn on/off WiFi when necessary. Kind of like a “WiFi on demand” utility.
Please let me know if any similar app exists. Thank you.

That sounds like a neat idea. I'm looking for an app that will just turn on the wifi based on time of day or GPS location. I wonder if there is an app out there that incorporates these features?
@AllononMage
You could try gprofile http://www.ageye.de/index.php?s=gprofile/about
It provides you with the capability to turn wifi on and off based on time of day or cell tower you are connected to. Though this is not GPS it might be what you are looking for.

Hi HIY,
I hope that after you've found some time to explore the app you might come back and give some feedback. I can't quite wrap my head around how to utilize this app... but I sort of see the ballpark idea.
Thank you

lol Yes it will take some time to figure out and I will give some feed back when I do... that may be a few days to a week though, as I have a few things on my plate.
From what I have read so far, you need to plan what you want to have happen... time-event-app-order-action like turn on bluetooth at 10PM start Activesync Sync calendar, disconnect, turn off blue tooth. Turn off radio at 11pm and on at 6am on monday thru friday, dim screen light to 20% at 6pm... It seems like an unlimited number of scenarios can be set up, but you then need to create a hierarchy for each G-profile so they do not cross paths.
Great potential, like having the radio turnoff while at work but on at lunch automaticlly... but will take time to master
Edit...
I am just too busy or lazy to spend time learning how to make this work, though really do I believe it would be worth it...
i found this app a while ago, and think its pretty cool. but i have an unlimited plan, so it doesnt matter to me. nice, and hope it helps. its called rk-OSR, i cant post a link because im a new member, but it is on this forum. use the search i suppose. it allows you to snyc instantly and will auto-connect to wifi before.

I have a T-Mobile HD2 (was the first person in line and got it first here in Nashville). And out of the box it was able to tether to my cradlepoint in my truck on the way home. I finially called tech support last night and here is what they said.
"It works and they dont offer supprt for tethering."
Well, if I use my mobile browser and do a speed test, I get up to 3 megs down, which is 3G and great... But if I tether or use ICS or the WiFi Router functions, I am now only getting 300k up and down. Is there some setting to give the tethering the same speeds and just useing the phone to surf the web?
I have read alot here and even used the "dearmasfamily Internet Speed Boost" cab and still the tethering is very slow compared to just useing the phones browser. Any ideas or is this just a sad issue for my phone?
The stock rom did this, I have tried other roms, and am currently using the Energy ROM which came out April 1st.
Thanks in advance for any help with this issue.

Hello all. I have a T-Mobile HTC Dash and I am wondering how to use my phone for a router or a wireless hotspot. This is a company phone so I can't go crazy and hack it plus I wouldn't want to go that far because these little gadgets are not my strong point by any means.
Thanks for you help.

Hi guys well i own a HTC Aria and it is rooted. First I installed Cyanogen Mod 7 on it which is great but the one thing that i have not gotten to work is to connect to a hidden SSID over wifi. I installed as many nightly builds I could hoping that with each new one maybe it would be fixed but sadly no. I am presently running cyanogen mod 6.1.1 of which the hidden SSID wifi works great. Can anyone tell me if this problem has been fixed or can anyone give a solution which does not include making my SSID visable because I can't for personal reasons. Your response is most appreciated.
Sorry, but for the 100th time, your out of luck when it comes to connecting to hidden APs if your running CM.
Ok cool its no big problem, I guest I have to wait for the final cm7 release

No. Not going to happen most likely as mentioned 200 times. Just unhide your network.
That would be impossible as my school uses a hidden network. Can't just waltz up to them and request them to unhide it.
I feel you man i guess for now do what i did go back to cm 6.1.1, it works great with hidden SSID over wifi
The question is why hidden SSID are a no go for CM7?
I wonder if it took this long for cm6 to get the hidden SSID over wifi to work or if it ever even had this problem from the start/to begin with.

Same situation here, I just reverted back to FR008 with HK kernel (for great battery life) and will stick with it until the semester is done or someone manages it to get it working on CM7.
You got it man its just a waiting game but in the end those guy do a great job getting the roms fully working and stable. 5 stars!!!!!!!!!
