I'm wondering what the experience has been for people using Opera 8.6. I installed the free beta version months ago, which is working, and I'm wondering if it is worth it to buy the latest retail version.
Any Opera users care to comment on their experience?
Generally I find this a good browser but there a few problems which I must mention:-
1) One cannot configure it to store its Cache to SD card. There are ways around this but nothing out of the box.
2) For large web pages with graphics and annimations vertical scrolling becomes really painful as the page does not scroll smoothly with the vertical bar. This gets really really annoying at times.
3) There is a slight lag between pressing of a link and the browser responding. You tend to press the link repeatedly thinking the browser has not responded and then it hangs. However this is something you soon get used to so not that much of a problem.
4) Quite often it does not load the page fully and gets stuck towards the last bits of the page. This is more so for pages with annimations. The progress bar gets stuck when the page has almost been downloaded and only a small percent is left. You then have to refresh the page and usually the 2nd attempt gets you through the full page.
4) The worst problem for me which has really limited its use is that once you have used this it stops some other programs to start and you have to soft-reset. Typical examples are Netfront, Planmaker and Textmaker. After using Opera and having killed it these programs will often not start without a soft-reset.
As I said at the start it is still a good browser and so I am not mentioning the good things but these are just the glitches which seriously mar the user experience of an otherwise good product. In fact though I have a registered version I find myself using it less and less and prefering Netfront over it simply of some of the annoying bugs I mention.
Regards
I agree with smrz completely, and have suffered from the issues outlined, but I'd like to add:
- Opera 8.6 can't handle some pages very well (I'm thinking of the Yahoo pages where you need to log in). It just doesn't render them in any sort of useable fashion.
Having said this, I still use it as my main browser, and find that in combination with PIE, then I can do pretty much everything I want on the web.
Cheers,
Steve.
are there any differences between the beta version and the retail version?

Here a post I wrote on moving cache of Opera on SD card...
http://www.planete-htc.com/index.php?mod=forum&ac=voir&cat=101&id=5514
Open opera.ini file, go to [User Prefs]. At the end of that paragraph, write that ligne
Cache Directory4=\Storage Card\x with x the folder you choosed for cache on your SD.
For french roms, Storage Card must be replaced by Carte de Stockage
Opera is not perfect, but is largely better than other mobile browers...
Thanks for the input. I'm not sure I will pay for the retail version at this point.
Re: the difference between beta version and latest retail version, I'm sure there are many and would depend on the beta version. Main one that comes to mind is that I understand the retail version has a tabbed browser interface while my old beta version does not.
I wonder if Opera mobile will ever support Java?
opera 8.5/8.6 does not support java & javascript?
what about vbscript?
Where do we copy the opera.dll
I am running a trial version. Have the cracked opera.dll file. Where do I copy this to in order to prevent the 30 days to run up?

Here's an idea: how about *paying* for it? I mean, it's only $24 or about 2% the RRP of an HTC Universal. Don't try to kid yourself that circumventing anti-piracy measures is anything other than stealing. If you use a cracked copy, you are a theif.
I agree I always buy software. I have 50+ apps on my IIs and all are paid for you, shouldn't try and steal money from hard working developers who are trying to make a living.
I am finding Opera 8.60 retail to be AWESOME!
In fact, I ditched the JasJar some months ago and have been using a JAM for some time. I only bought a new JJ cos of Opera on VGA. It's rendering most pages such as my online banking (which PIE cocked up completely), it zooms perfectly, and it's just amazing! If WM5 had come out with a decent broser on day one it would have driven operator ARPU's and internet usage. Now I have google with me wherever I go. I kind of had it on my JAM, but not really with that crappy low res screen.
This is a no brainer app and worth every cent!
Piracy
Nice thinking and have no objection. But if you got something for the first time you simply dont go about splashing money around. It is only fare that I want to make use of it, see & decide. If you check 8.6 is not the latest version it is an old version. By paying I would now be getting v9 (see I checked it and am planning to) but need to see if it is what I need / want.
Stereotyping aint really good. Peace anyway....
PS: Besides doing this kind of stuff is always the best way of learning the logic, structure of how a device works. And that is my main interest in these stuff. Not getting all for free. Thanks for your comments anyway...

I'm using Opera on the trial. 30 days is plenty of time to make your mind up. If you don't really use it enough to make up your mind in that time, then don't buy it. If you do, buy it. $24 really is next to nothing for a product. That wouldn't a decent sandwich, cake and a cup of tea!

They provide a trial for that purpose. If they didn't, I still wouldn't agree. Afterall, I can't try out a holiday before I buy it and if I don't like the terms, I can simple boycott the product.

I'd hardly call it stereotyping. Stereotyping is painting a group with a broad brush and, in doing so, encompassing more than rightfully fit the description. However, calling all pirates theives is not stereotyping as all piracy is theft.

I know I'm on a very high horse here, but I cannot and will not tolerate piracy. It *does* hurt people (developers, distributers, support staff, everyone in the chain and their families) and they only reason why it's not as widely regarded as wrong is because everyone knows they will more than likely get away with it. Steal Opera is no better than stealing a wallet or an item of jewellery or anything else. It's ALL theft.
I'm using an early beta that does not have the 30 day limit.
Am I stealing?
The reason I posted the question is because I am not averse to paying for a good finished product. It seems craigiecraig4 (if I have the name spelled right) would say that Opera 8.6 is a good finished product.
That is the type of opinion I was soliciting.
I think anyone who has a beta version of software on there device have in a way paid for it because they put there device on the line to test the product.

Dude - your articles are GREAT! Going thro many of your past posts now...keep it up!
I'm a new user of the SGS and am waiting patiently for my first Android phone to arrive. I have read many, many, many...did I say many post, here and on many other forums alike, concerning the SGS. I have read pros and cons and tips and tricks, but most have been on phones that have been 'Rooted'. I will like to defer from doing such thing(at least not yet) but would rather wait until Samsung releases the official Firmware that will supposedly clear all(most) of the major faults that the SGS has.
Now I would like this to be an official thread that would help those of us, who have a stocked SGS and may or may not be experiencing major lag, to help give tips on how to improve the stock SGS as it is already; for speed, what programs to use etc. It would be very comforting to establish what folks have installed on their phones and any recommendations to getting the best out of their stock SGS as possible, in waiting for the New Update Official Samsung firmware to be release.
So please, offer any advice or tips for tweaks or programs to get, maybe a place to get them if possible, so as to make life a little easier. Thank you.
I received my galaxys exactly a week ago and i immediately jumped onto the Market.
Make sure you have a google(gmail) account, as it connects the accounts.
My best downloads are as follows:
-3g watchdog. keeps an eye on your usage
-Astro . file manager
-Audiomanager. speaks for itself
-facebook
-galactic core free . Epic live wallpaper
-mario live wallpaper . not available on market, google it.
-opera mini- web browser, better than stock
-shake them all- THE BEST LIVE WALLPAPER EVA, moves droids react to accelerometer, sound and light.
-starfield,live wallpaper
-Task Manager. essential task manager for watching all your apps and services.
thats it, just search the market and XDA for other cool apps
Those are some really nice tips. I do appreciate. I also like to concur about the Opera Mini app. I use that on my N95 8gig at the moment and there's nothing that can come close. although, there are a few bugs that I think they kinda left out due to the Andriod fever, which I have apparently gotten Regardless, I am glad they have an android app of that in the market. I assume there is already a Market app on the phone, already, right?
Also. What about apps that you do not ever use? I read about not being able to remove them but is it possible to completely disable them?
The android market is pre-loaded onto the phone. there are many apps that come on the phone that are really useful. There are a couple of apps that you may not use but most of them are really useful.
I dont know that you are able to delete these stock apps but you can change the default apps. For example if chosen as default, Opera Mini opens up ALL web links and is really useful. The Stock browser is excellent but im used to opera as i used it on my Satio previously.
The model i bought was a 16GB version and 2GB is reserved for apps, ive also got a 16GB sd card so im not worried about storage.

As the Dolphin compared to Opera mini?
Just go and try it,its also free from the market. You may still prefer Opera, doesnt matter.Give it a go anyway.
I will when I get my phone. That is why I asked. I do not have my phone yet.
Just a suggestion which hasn't been mentioned yet is to try LauncherPro or ADWLauncher as it makes customizing your home windows much easier. I love being able to customize the info I really want to see. Also spend some time using swype and you won't want to go back.

I tried the Opera mini 5.1.21126 version and I think the tapping response is weaker than the stock browser. I had to tap several times to get a response. Either that or the mini is not calibrated accurately. I've reverted back to the stock browser. I will give Dolphin a go.
I really hate these MegaCrap mirrors. So I thought I'd offer to mirror some EVO roms. Perhaps someone can give me an idea of how much bandwidth we'd be talking about per rom?
I have a hosting account with Bluehost with "unlimited" bandwidth and diskspace, though I've never tested them to see what their idea of what unlimited means. I'd be willing to provide mirror space, so long as we're not talking about several terabytes of bandwidth for each rom. The TOS requires that any downloaded files have a link on a webpage hosted on the server, but that should be easy to do.
I think I'd like to limit this to a couple of roms to start with, but PM me if you'd like to be the first to try it out. The files would be stored at http://roms.renoiphone.com, which is a tad ironic, but I have other domains as well if the irony is too much for you.
I have started doing this for some of our dev's here...alone on a few leaks and some WIP ports I have seen a total of 380GB of xfr since 5/1/11. - last month I started doing this for them on the 13th and it was well over 500GB of xfr. Just a heads up from what I have seen...and like he said..I am willing to host roms as well if he isnt available

Don't host anything popular... too many http connections and they'll shut you down. And it's going to be hella slow transfer rates (they don't make any guarantees about speed) that will be killed at about 10 minutes if the file isn't downloaded fast enough.
You're better off getting setup with someone like http://www.mediafire.com/
Just sayin'
EDIT: Check this out: http://www.dreamhost.com/unlimited.html -- Bluehost has almost an identical stance on everything, they just don't have a nice little article like that on their website; it's buried in their TOS.
Ryjabo that was a great explanation...even more amusing as I work for a webhosting company and we were just talking about the "unlimited" thing yesterday.

Actually, I'm fairly sure you're wrong. I read the ToS before signing up, and I just read it again. The only prohibition is on using the space as online backup:
Backup Storage. Bluehost.com offers its Services to host web sites, not to store data. Using an account as an online storage space for archiving electronic files is prohibited and will result in termination of hosting services without prior notice.
Of course, you can't "overuse" the service (whatever that means), nor can you post porn, copyrighted material, engage in illegal activities, etc. But if you can find anything that says file sharing is against their ToS, you have a better eye than I do.
Also, my wife has her own Bluehost account that used to host a four-hour podcast every week. Even when it was the number one video gaming podcast in the UK, and hosting her files for iTunes download, we never had speed or throttle issues over the course of more than a year. Again, not 600 KB/sec, but...
I guess it depends you what you call "too popular" or "too many connections." I'm not saying you're wrong that this amount of traffic would cause them to throttle, but I am saying that they're not as bad as you're making them out to be.

The space they offer for web hosting is for exactly that: hosting a website. Take up too much space for anything outside of that and they can shut you off.
To be quite honest, I doubt enough people are going to use your mirrors (no offense) to cause any problems for you. I just thought, as someone who has had personal experience with these issues & Bluehost, I should let you know.
I have been shut down by unlimited web hosts for just this reason. The reality is that you need a dedicated server which is at least $100 a month. You might fly under the radar for a while, but in the end they will shut you down.

The applicable term to this thread would be "overselling" lol. In the world of hosting there are really three tiers of usertypes. The first is a multimillion/billion dollar company who builds, maintains, upkeeps, etc a huge, usually state-of-the-art building with security, advanced fire suppression systems and electric generator backups. The second kind of user is the much smaller company who leases rack space or sq footage from the building owner so they can keep servers there. They are subject to, and in turn, enforce a strict bandwidth policy. Then the third kind is the guy who leases servers on an individual basis, and finds customers who need to host a website. He can play god with his customers, so long they don't exceed the limits of the guy he's leasing it from.
Hosts (tier 3 in my little example above) know a very, very small percentage of their customers will ever meet the restrictions on their arbitrarily defined packages, so they (often times grossly) oversell a server. Imagine you buy a hosting package that includes 100 GB of monthly bandwidth. Now imagine 200 other people buy it. The box itself has a 2,000 GB monthly hard limit. How is that host able to allow 20,000 GB on a 2,000 GB server!? It's not magic. They know most users will only use, say, between 100 MB and 1 GB of what they paid for. So they sold 20,000 GB of bandwidth but will only actually use well under 2,000. This formula will work into infinity...so hosts cut to the chase and flat out offer unlimited hosting. Until someone comes along who actually *uses* the undefined and vague bandwidth they think they're paying for. Then they get the boot. The old "too good to be true" syndrome. It's just marketing.
This works the same way for storage space, too.
But to be fair, sometimes hosts can be extremely lenient, especially if you're on a vacant server. They've already paid for the bandwidth, someone might as well use it. But as more and more accounts on that server are added and vie for the limited amount of resources allotted to it that month, eventually you'll get squeezed out of the pool.
Anyway, you can get a lot cheaper than that if you get a VPS, and many actual boxes are well under $100/mo if you want something low-powered. Serving files isn't as resource intensive as something like massive database queries, so no fancy multicore systems are needed. When you look at the lowest end boxes, you'll see quite a few come with unmetered 10Mbps. However that usually does bump you above $100/mo if you're going the route of unmetered. You can calculate 10Mpbs(24*7*30) to get an actual figure of bandwidth available that month, but since you can never exceed it, it's easier to just think "as much data as it possibly can serve" while download speeds get more and more diluted.
EDIT:
I no longer own a u8800, neither will I host the download server in the near future. Better host providers exists than my download server. I still have the files (approx. 15-20GB) if anyone else is interested for hosting, though they are most likely outdated by now.

Hi!
I decided that I will host a mirror for everything related to our U8800 - Ideos X5.
It's hosted at my home. I have 20Mbps uplink on FTTH (fiber). The links below are redundant, each link is hosted on a seperate 20Mbps link. I do have some issues from time to time on server.streznik.org, cause it is updating in my OS, while qrac.zapto.org is updated on my router.
I will try to keep things organized and be online as much as possible (I cant guarantee 99% uptime). I am from Europe, so speeds elsewhere may be a bit slow.
And if I helped you getting a file you could not find elsewhere, use the Thanks button.
Primary: http://qrac.zapto.org/
Secondary: http://server.streznik.org/ Please use this only if the primary website is down
Permanently offline!
I switched to Ubuntu server for hosting the mirror, I will add upload function later.
Update 14.3.2012:
Switched to HFS. Everyone can upload, I will sort files later. Developers are not strangers here aswell. No bandwidth capping.
Update 18.3.2012
Added U8800 PRO section per request
Added some statistics at the bottom of the page
Update 21.3.2012
Wow! Over 200 Absolute Unique Visitors in 2 days reported by Google Analytics!
HFS reports over 1200 IP's connected since I began this little project! Few of them are zombies from China, but still!
Update 23.3.2012
New categories, I grouped them because of the increasing vertical size. It takes a second or two longer to find what you are actually looking for (more clicks), but it makes the whole page more compact.
Also added a graph at the bottom of the page (1.8kB), pink is download and yellow is upload.
Update 28.3.2012
All paid apk's have been removed after consulting with the moderator. Free apk's are allowed to be uploaded, while the paid ones will be deleted immediately, on the second occasion that a user will upload a paid apk, I will ban the IP.
Update 5.4.2012
I have changed my phone to Galaxy S i9000(Huawei never again!). I will still host the mirror, but it might not be updated so frequently.
Update 2.6.2012
I've updated ICS Aurora ROM files, as it is the ROM I keep my eyes on.
... Great news for all u8800 users ..
..just a little notice for you.. remove the ''mystuff'' folder, it contains Warez/Illegal files..

Please give me feedback on the download speeds. What is your best download speed compared to this mirror?
I tried it on my U8800, I got 2MB/s, not over LAN but Internet. I am worried because I see speeds about 140kB/s, one had 40kB/s. I have overclocked my router for best possible speeds.
I think you are overthinking the speeds of download, let me remind you that a lot of ppl are still atatched to adsl at 12 mb/s even less.
If you browse the forum of hfs you can find little tweaks that can do a little improvment, none the less, i tested and everything went well.
Sorry for the bad english, its not my native language.

Well being few thousand kilometers apart does not help...that is why I mentioned "slow" speeds from those who arent from Europe or near EU.
After all, the main reason I had put up this backup mirror, well so it is backup up. Slower speed is better then no speed. Afaik I made everything as fast as possible.

Hi. I uploaded U8800V100R001C00B136SP02CUSTC205D001.rar. Its Finland b136 Elisa rom. I also linked your mirror in the ideos wiki.
Hi Ohjaaja!
I added and edited the wiki a bit, thank you for linking it. Moved your uploaded ROM to "Stock ROMs".
As you may see from my sig I maintain torrents of all the ROM's for the Desire S, and it has gone down very well there, people have donated a little money to the idea and I was able to rent and run a seedbox with a 1GB line just for there ROM's, thus giving people a fast and 'free' way to download ROM's
So the question is would people be interested in the same thing for the Note? It costs very little for me to run a seedbox (about $5 a month) and I would happly pay for some/all of this If there was enough interest in the idea?
A few advantages we came up with where
Assuming we would be downloading from a filehost (free)
1) Can pause a torrent
2) Zero waiting time to start download
3) Little to no chance of corrupted file
4) If corrupted only need the file blocks that are damaged
5) Unaffected by timeouts
6) Can seed the file to others (I see it as a +)
7) Could be faster than a free filehost download
If your not sure what a torrent or torrenting is check out the good old wikipedia.

This goes to both developers and users, do you want torrents or not?
alot of isp's block torrents so its a PITA to use

This is true, however there are plenty of ways round this. And in some country's the big free download sites don't work or are horribly slow, at least torrents can give fast downloads around the world no matter where they are.
But you are right..guess to sides really
I'd like torrents.
IMO its probably safer because packages are less likely to be corrupted.

I would most definitely use torrents
It means zero waiting time on starting the download, and no more captcha's
Same here. I use torrents around the clock, and it's simply the best way to share big files. I've seen a couple of devs that have started to use torrents instead of those slow and unreliable sharing services, and i'm glad they do.
So my vote goes to YES.
Torrents are great, cant think why not...so Yes
Since all of the hosting site are closing shop, changing there policies or ending up like megaupload. Torrents became my source for files and entertainment.
Im happy im getting back into torrents, forgot how easy it was.
+1 for torrents and the fact I personally use tTorrent on my handset means, I can still download them straight to my phone if and when needed.

Yup!
Looks like thats a yes then I shall put in a request to add another seedbox to my account and then open a thread in the dev section, whos the mod for the note? So I can ask to get it stickied once its up

I am already seeding quite a few roms on one of my amazon ec2 boxes...(in my sig) We could help each other by seeding the same torrents. Let me know when you are set up?

Oh christ no, Torrents are good for things which remain the same for a long time, like a movie, but a ROM becomes out of date the moment a new one is released...
Stick to DDL (rapidshare should be used more, I recon). I'd love to use usenet (NZBs) to get ROM's, it fast, no waiting, uploader only needs to 'seed' it once.
Though its only useful to people with a subscription, or if they get it free with an ISP.
It's the developers ROMs though, so really they can upload them where they wish!
