My buddy just got the hero and I rooted his phone and im wiping it and putting on a new rom and like always i always wipe data and dalvik and it says
"Error : Run 'wipe dalvik' via adb!
How do I wipe it thru adb? What commands?
Code:
adb remount
adb shell rm -rf /system/sd/dalvik-cache
Otherwise just power off the phone, restart into recovery and try to wipe it again.

The above two solutions should fix your problem. The reason you're getting that error message however is most likely because you're running a older version of the Recovery ROM. Amon has said that the older versions (anything older than 1.6.2) will give you that error message when you try to wipe dalvik.
His later version 1.6.2 fixes this problem, so I would consider upgrading. Also, even though it's giving you the error message, it does actually clear Dalvik -- this was confirmed by a logcat.
I tried reflashing a sense 3.0 2.3.3 rom because of some minor issues. Now I may have nuked my /data partition. first it wouldn't format so I pulled battery numerous times. and Mounted it through mounts and storage menu, then I hit format, and it formatted, so I hit mount again and flashed the rom. and when I restarted the phone after splash screen the phone restarted and went into recovery
Tried everything including mounting /data again and it keeps saying error mounting /data. am I screwed?
I have .2007 eng bootloader btw. shoud I try the pd15img?

I don't think you need to do that. You could do a fastboot erase, then go back into recovery and wipe data to reformat it /data, effectively starting from nothing.

Now I am getting mount /cache errors. aww man I think my phone is done....
edit: used the pd15img and I am back on stock :| s= off but I have the stock bootloader wtf.... how do I get my eng bootloader back?
this is how I fixed it:
I was on eng bootloader, but then I got reverted back to the stock bootloader.
This is how I encountered the problem. first of all I was having issues with raffy's fusion 3.0 rom, so I decided to reflash it, but it wouldn't flash or format /data, then I mounted it to through mounts and storage on the latest cwm 3.0.2.4 and hit format.
After that I tried reflashing his rom, it flashed but, after splashscreen I was redirected to my recovery instead. that's when I freaked because when I tried mounting data it said error cannot mount /data. so I fired up adb and did fastboot erase system -w and it erased it including cache.
then I popped up into recovery and BOOM started having cache mount errors experienced by a lot of people lately.
I thought I was SOL, but nope I downloaded the pd15img from http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V4NAODYZ
and put it on the root of my sd card and it worked....
so if anyone of you dudes are having similar problems try that ^
-I was on virtous 2.35 then I tried to flash 2.37. I went to recovery and hit /mount data to wipe /data partition I kept getting unable to mount /data in recovery. I have fixed this issue before by just applying the pd15img.zip file in hboot.
I was on the ENG hboot
rooted with visionary on the GOOD eMMC SEM04G 2.17GiB
and now when I tried running pd15img.zip
it says
1.bootloader ok
2. boot ok
3. recovery ok
4. system fail- UZ
5.userdata- ok
6. splash 1- ok
7. tp
8. tp bypassed
9. radio v2 ok
10. radio cust ok
Image unzipping fail
update fail!
press power to reboot.
Any help? Did I break my eMMC chip? do I have to go in for a warranty exchange (I heard tmo stopped giving mytouch 4g replacements rather they are giving g2's?)
what to do?
update 1: /data has been successfully mounted!
what I did was use use a fresh SDCARD formatted with fat32 from windows with
this pd15img (second on the list)- This file contains the new Clockworkmod 5.0.2.0 and the Eng H-Boot 85.2007 (note that I have s= off)
from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200147
flashing 2.35 right now wish me luck :S
update 2: first flash didn't work after mytouch 4g splash screen phone is restarting, doing second flash. If this doesn't work I will try flashing a pd15img with a mysense leak in it.
update 3: looks like 2nd flash is GO! at VU loading screen!
Issue has been resolved (once again by me -.-)
thnx anyways guys.
Why don't you just do a regular full data wipe and reflash the rom? I've never had to mount data to wipe.

Not sure why but everytime I do regular wipe and then flash VU it doesn't work. I have to manually mount /system, /cache, and /data and then wipe.

glad you got your issue fixed, but it does seem a little weird that you have to do all that just to flash a rom I usually just wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik, then format system and Im good to go. never had any issues that way, no mounting or anything
i have a nook stuck on silver n. i restore it to 1.0.1 and i have tried 8 failed boots and power, n , and up bottom but same results anything else i can do? i tried flashing 1.0.1 again but had error formatting on cache system and data.
Are you using version 3.2.0.1 of CWR?

yes i am and i have tried different ones but always get format error
Try factory reset - wipe data/system and then wipe cache on the first screen. Don't forget to go to the advanced screen and wipe Davlik.

is that the 8 failed boot thing? ill try it though.
hi
I have flashed the new ROM, but there some problems
when i try to do a "factory data reset" from the settings-privacy
and check "erase USB storage" this error message appears "invalid path : null"
and when i try to do a "factory data reset" without checking "factory data reset"
the device restarts and stuck in the formatting screen for along time
I normally do a factory reset in CWM... Maybe that will help ?
yes i did a factory reset from the recovery
also when i try to "ersae usb storage" from settings
I get this message
"Sorry! The application settings/messages (process com.android.settings/messages)
has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
and when i try to "wipe Dalvik Cache"
i get this message
E: unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]
by the way I did a factory reset from the /recovery after installing the ROM

Second message is normal, you dont have that partition.
Not sure what you are trying to do. Start off fresh? If so, just go to CWM, wipe data, wipe dalvik ,cache and then if you want go to mounts and format sd card.
Then flash your ROM (and kernel if need be), fix permissions and reboot.
EDIT
Oh adn before somewhere berates you, there is a Q+A sub forum, this one if for devs only
I have tried what u said but the same problem still exists

do u mean that it is normal to get this error when doing a format or wipe from within the cooked rom
cause I have tried to format the sd card and do a factory reset from within the rom when i were using the stock rom (not Cyanogenmod) and I haven't faced any problem

I meant reboot into clock work mod recovery. Do as I say and you'll be fine. It's normal to get that ext error

doing a factory reset and wipe everything works fine for me.
i originally tried to run it without a wipe and it was hanging in a lot of apps
