Nexus One or Htc Bravo? - Nexus One General

I really like my G1 but i'm thinking on upgrading to a new phone in a couple of months...the phone that have been in my mind actually is the Nokia N900...but now with the nice looing N1 things have change...now so far what i know is that the Htc Bravo is gonna have a better camera but a less RAM that the N1...and is gonna have the Sense UI...which i like...anyway any comments on this?

where did you hear that?

I'm not to sure on the camera part but I did hear it's got 320MB of Ram.

I heard that too but where did you hear it was going to have a better camera? Also none of the stuff about the RAM is confirmed, although Sense UI is most definatly going to be included, but the Nexus One with a custom sense UI rom will be able to run sense UI better anyway if the part about the RAM is true.

maybe i was wrong about the camera can't find the source...
actually it has a addition of a five megapixel AF cam capable of 720p video capture

That would be the same camera as the N1. I may be biased but I would say that the Nexus One wins against the Bravo hands down.

I'd just get the Nexus One so you can have a snap dragon phone now then you can install a Sense rom when that comes out.

Actually the Bravo has a snapdrangon too....i really like the way it look and i think the optical "balltrack" looks awesome...

Look man, the camera is probably going to be the same. The Nexus One will have more RAM, and therefore a Sense UI Custom ROM on the Nexus One will run smoother than any Sense UI ROM on the Bravo. Its pretty clear that the choice, assuming you plan to root the phone and install a custom ROM, is the N1.

I like the optical "trackball" a lot better too. I just think that Google would do software updates more/faster than HTC. And I don't care for the Sense UI anymore. Vanilla Android (with tweaks from xda members) is enough for me.

The optical trackpad is fascinating, if they could light the trackpad with a tri-color led, then I would be interested more.
I think Google was aware of the Bravo when HTC made the Nexus One. They probably were okay with HTC releasing a phone with the same core hardware as the N1 (minus the extra RAM).
EDIT: For me the big incentive for the N1 is the "generally" Vanilla install. With my Sprint Hero, I removed the extras. A lot of people like Sense though, but I waited for a while and realized that Sprint wasn't going to release updates in a timely manner. If I had to rely on anyone for updates, I'm more comfortable relying on Google (and occasionally HTC) for them.

Bravo was listed on HTC's leaked roadmap as reported on this very site:

Also, here is the other article:

The n1 and bravo have the same hardware. Bravo will come with sense and wont be rushed like the n1 was. Google released the n1 early to try to beat the other (bravo) snapdragon phones coming out. Why would you buy the n1 over the bravo if you seen the bravo with HTC sense? I love my n1 but now i kinda wish I would of waited for the more polished bravo. You may ask why more polished? I bet it wont have 3g issues, dust under the screeen and alignment issues. All of the n1 issues could have been fixed before launch.

Im assuming its CDMA ? Thatd be weird to drop this one on GSM bands so quickly unless its ATT.
Love the optical trackball alot.
I hope those expresso videos Ive seen arent accurate, sense UI looks seriously uglified.

Rushed like the N1 was? Simply because SOME people are having 3G connection issues, and SOME people are having dust under the screen means it was rushed? This means that the manufactures aren't "manufacturing" the device correctly obviously (not the 3G part). I don't believe it was rushed, I just think they don't know how to make the device at wherever they are shipping it from. If anything, this same exact thing could possibly happen to the Bravo - if they haven't learned from these past mistakes.
This 3G issue seems simply retarded, and I have no way of helping the N1 out on it sadly. I can't see why people would be having connectivity issues. That, I must admit, I guess is an issue that the N1 has. But people are making such a big, please note an - unnecessary - deal out of these issues just to bash the device..not cool >.>

Engadget Nexus One hands on!

LINK
SWEET!
Very Nice.
I am buying one sight unseen in person.
Awesome write up & pic's...can't wait
Here's some of the text from the link for you all:
"That's right, humans -- Engadget has its very own Nexus One. You've seen leaked pics and videos from all over, but we're the first publication to get our very own unit, and we plan on giving you guys the full story on every nook and cranny of this device. In case you've been living under a rock, here's the breakdown of the phone. The HTC-built and (soon to be) Google-sold device runs Android 2.1 atop a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, a 3.7-inch, 480 x 800 display, has 512MB of ROM, 512MB of RAM, and a 4GB microSD card (expandable to 32GB). The phone is a T-Mobile device (meaning no 3G if you want to take it to AT&T), and includes the standard modern additions of a light sensor, proximity sensor, and accelerometer. The Nexus One has a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, and we have to say so far the pictures it snaps look pretty decent (and the camera software is much faster than the same component on the Droid). The phone is incredibly thin and sleek -- a little thinner than the iPhone -- but it has pretty familiar HTC-style industrial design. It's very handsome, but not blow-you-away good looking. It's a very slim, very pocketable phone, and feels pretty good in your hand. Thought you'd have to wait for that Google event for more on the Nexus One? Hell no -- so read on for an in-depth look. C'mon, you know you want to."

Most likely not unless google wants to pay Apple. I believe apple has patent rights for multitouch in the US. Thus, no multi touch devices in the US. Look at MOT Droid vs milestone.

I don't think I made myself clear. Multitouch is already there. It is disabled by google per their internal agreement with Apple. I believe it has to do with Patent #7,479,949. Yes HTC has it enabled on their ROMs. I have no idea what the agreement between HTC and Cupertino lies. But none of the google's current core apps have multi-touch enabled. Can they be enabled? Sure. Google did it for iphone on the maps. But for now, I don't forsee it happening yet. We'll have to modify it using HTC ROM. I'll most likely like the sense UI anyhow. So, I have no issue with that.

I would think that if Loccy could do it in Browser for the G1/MyTouch, then it could be enabled in the other apps, no?
I am using the Hero21 rom release and if you pinch out on the main screen (multi-touch) it zooms out and you can see all 7 panels. There are other ways to enable multi-touch at the moment but it is buggy.

multitouch is disabled at the kernel level on the stock ROM. to enable multitouch on any app you would first need to install a ROM with a kernel that has it enabled.

Sure we don't know about the Nexus One yet but since it's possible to get multitouch on the Motorola Droid with the original ROM and kernel(see Dolphin browser for example) isn't it a likely possibility that the situation will be the same regrding the Nexus One?
i dobut it, nexus one is a google phone. Both g1 and mytouch were also google experience phones. the droid is not a google experience phone. its stock like the HTC hero. it doesnt matter really since we will all get multitouch when cyanogen makes his rom.

Any Phones Coming out this Year that will be better than the Nexus One?

I'm contemplating on purchasing the Nexus One. I want to make sure I make the right decision. I don't want to fork out $600 then to find out later that a new better device will be released.
So, anyone know of upcoming phones this year on par or even better than the Nexus One?
Much appreciated.

I have heard there is going to be a enterprise version with full physical Keyboard.....they are stills rummors, but you can wait a little more and see if its true.
Also, there is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10....8.1MP Camera, 16x Zoom, 1ghz snapdragon processor, 4" AMOLED screen...and its going to be out in the near future (1 Quarter of 2010). Its a great device.
It all depends on what your definition of "better" is. Way too subjective for a good answer from anyone here.
The nexus one doesn't have a physical keyboard. That's a deal-breaker for me, so in my opinion, at least, it's not better than my G1 or CLIQ.
Even in our crappy US market, though, there will be more powerful phones every year. Some will have features you like. Others not. If you're with T-Mobile, keep an eye out on tmonews.com. They usually have new phones and rumors of new phones long before some other sites do.
There is a leaked roadmap from HTC. I like the Bravo model over N1 because of the "Touch-Scrollball" - so there is less a chance to wreck it if you lay the phone frontside.
But, of course there always will be something better...
The HTC Bravo is pretty much the Nexus one with an upgraded camera (it does 720p recording) so technically is a better model.

How about next year, around March/June...?
That makes sense, let's see what unfolds in the coming months. Can't wait, I'll hold off buying the Nexus One for now.
The Engadget review of the X10 is great content.
Also, the HTC HD2 coming to T-Mobile is a mighty contender as well. But I'm not too keen on the Windows Mobile 7 OS. Wished it was Android.

I have no intentions of getting the Nexus One, whatsoever! Trust me, by the time the year ends, phones are gonna be murders. Like we went form crap phones, to the iPhone, and then the rocket flared upward after that.
you're afraid of buying a nexus one - but why ? you pay $600 for one, and a new phone comes out next month, so you sell the N1 for $550 and buy that other one.... or wait longer and still sell the N1 for $550...
hardware has ALWAYS been this way. there will always be a better/faster/cooler product released. hard to beat the G1's keyboard and stuff, but it will be beaten.
just buy the N1, and enjoy it. you're not promised tomorrow
Wait Until either the rumored nexus one with keyboard comes out (or at least see if it is real) or wait until the HTC Bravo comes out (it is a GSM device so it doesn't matter if it goes to the carrier your not on, you can just unlock it)
The Bravo is identical to the Nexus One in specs. Yes it has 512 mb of ram not the rumored 320 mb of ram. But Bravo has HTC Sense on it and you know those people with the nexus one will try to get a fully working Bravo ROM that is working at full speed.
I'm sure when the Bravo comes out and it gets rooted someone will make a Nexus One 2.1 ROM so you can get the best of both worlds
Guys someone said the X10 does 720p? Well this is copy pasted from google.com/phone
"Video captured at 720x480 pixels at 20 frames per second or higher, depending on lighting conditions"
That is 720p isn't it?
It will be a long time before android phones start releasing anything better than a 1ghz snapdragon, not to mention that most of the other 1ghz android phones are only packing 256 ram.
To who ever said the Bravo will have 512, im pretty sure that is unconfirmed but it is possible.
Xperia10 looks like trash, its still stuck on 1.6 which also means they had to go with a lcd 65k colour screen.
If you want the HD2 in android flavor you could wait for the Supersonic
Best choice i think though is Bavo or Nexus One
@ Above:
It's the Bravo that does 720p recording and 720p is 1280x720
The Bravo has been confirmed to have 512mb ram. When you look at it it's the exact same as the Nexus in terms of size and shape etc (apart from trackpad and physical buttons) so it makes sense it has similar internals.
The X10 isn't trash. It's running 1.6 but will get a (Confirmed) update to 2.0/1 soon after launch. Timescape looks awesome and just as good as Sense UI (needs 5 homescreens though). It also has a 4.0 inch screen.
To me it's down to the Bravo or the X10. Purely because I need an instore purchase. I will almost certainly get the Bravo unless one of them ends up on o2 and I will then get the o2 handset.

There has been rumours that it will be released with 2.0, which would make more sense and could explain the repeated delays with the release date. But yes, as you said, even if it is released with 1.6 SE have confirmed a 2.0 upgrade for it.
As my contract ends in june, i just hope the X10 is available on t-mobile by then, my G1 is starting to get a bit battered
Also, Sony Ericsson phones have always had the best cameras and have always been great for music. I had a SE k750i a while back, which was an absolutely amazing phone.
I'm excited that the N2 could feature a keyboard, but then it might be by motorola which makes me go iffy, maybe I"m just pro HTC,
Im already saving for a SE X10....
HTC HD2 looks really nice, but no Android...deal breaker for me.

Reason to still get a Nexus One?

I'm still debating on which phone to get right now, and wanted some opinion from Nexus One owners. Aside from aesthetic, which is totally personal preferences anyway, should i still get one now that the desire is out? Seeing a lot of people rooted their phones to get the desire rom anyway.
1. Froyo update before anyone else.
2. You hate Sense UI

Pros of Nexus One vs desire
Will get Froyo soon (with full flash support)
two mics with one being used for noise cancellation
Cons of nexus one vs desire
3g issue(not as strong 3g signal if held in hand and weaker signal then other 3g phones)
no outlook calender support by default
Pros of desire vs nexus one
sense ui (if you like sense)
outlook calender support by default
Cons desire vs nexus one
Will not get Froyo or other udates soon or at all
one mic with no noise cancellation
If it was me I would go with the evo 4g but if I had to choose N1 vs desire I would get the nexus one. You will end up using nexus one rom with froyo anyway if you want updates the same year they come out.
Edit: Removed incorrect info about touch screen.
Wow, you basically nailed everything. Thanks for the info man.
I believe the Desire has the same touch screen as the Nexus One, and the same 3G chip. The 3G reception and the limitations of the touchscreen are the same on both.

Same here, lol, but my GF is constantly stealing my N1 from me, she loves the games on it.
Yesterday, at 1am, while still playing with it, she proclaimed that this is actually a "Family phone", so she has a right to use it all the time..
I guess I'll end up buying another one for her.
Yep, the ol lady is making noises. lol
N1:
1. N1 looks sexier than Desire.
2. N1 will get better attention from google.
3. N1 has active noise cancellation.
4. N1 has better development scene.
5. No SenseUI (I'd like to use google's interface).
6. Better support from community.
7. Tri-colour trackball notifications
Desire:
1. Desire has optical trackball.
2. It has more RAM (+50 I guess).
3. Comes with FM (I guess N1 will get it activated in the next update).
They both have the same touchscreen. So no advantages here...

The Nexus One and the Desire have the same amount of RAM. They use the same SOC with 512MB of RAM. HTC must be combining the 64MB of RAM of another processor in the phone into their total while Google doesn't for their specs.
Out of all if these new phones coming out, the only feature I really wish my Nexus had is HDMI out. I could care less about the new screens, or higher res cameras with HD recording (the main upgrades you'll find in the newer phones).. Some people definitely will, but I don't. If none of those three features really matter to you, you can't go wrong with the Nexus. Performance wise there really isn't anything that's even been announced that will trump the N1 in terms of speed and power.
If it comes down to the Desire and Nexus, and you value custom development, then pick the Nexus.
There isnt such a difference between the N1 and the Desire ( except for the noise cancellation, form factor, trackpad, ). They share the same specifications and while the Desire has a bit more RAM on paper, I dont think it will make any difference in performance. The touchscreen technology is THE SAME on both phones, only the Incredible has the new touchscreen technology so hah !!! I currently have the N1 and I have to say that I love every bit of it. If i had a chance to choose one more time between the N1 and the desire, I will still go with the N1 for some subjectively unspoken reasons ( lol ), and I LOVE the glowing notification trackball of the N1, which is just SO cool and not many android devices are equipped with !
There is a thread in the Desire subforum about it's reception dropping when picked up.

Why Nexus One Was Leapfrogged by HTC Incredible and Evo 4G

Google Exec Hints at Why Nexus One Was Leapfrogged by HTC Incredible, Evo 4G
http://googlewatch.eweek.com/content/android_vs_iphone/google_exec_hints_at_why_nexus_one_was_leapfrogged_by_htc_incredible_evo_4g.html
"Nexus One isn't a failure so much as a casualty of the success of the next wave of Android smartphones. In a few months, I'm sure we'll be saying the same things about the Incredible and the Evo 4G."
Some people may be bothered with this, but I am happy with my Nexus One. I have no buyers remorse.
I don't view my N1 as obsolete in any way at all and am quite happy with it, it's no worse than the Incredible and all aspects of the device ooze performance
phones are starting to become like computers now. as soon as you buy one a new and better one comes out tomorrow.
and what sucks about is...you're suck with a 2 year contract.
So adding two features equals "leapfrogged" now?
What a load of crap. Who has FroYo now? Yeah, that's what I thought.
I always f*cking hate these posts. I really don't want to hear doom and gloom.
Definitely don't feel any remorse.
My phone is JUST as good as the ones that are coming out NOW.
Yea, 8MP cam + dual flash, but cmon, the pictures are hardly better.
Plus the nexus LOOKS better than both of those.

What a load of crap. Who has FroYo now? Yeah, that's what I thought.

SERIOUSLY, people are rediculous....... I stayed with DDR400 until DDR32000 came out because it was a serious step up...... There is nothing that screams "OH MY GOD INNOVATION" about either phone..... My next phone will be when my Nexus no longer has the NAND capacity for the current Android version. I love my Nexus
i'm with mortzz on this one. we have a phone that we can do whatever we want to do to it. i'd MUCH rather have this. i'm on the fence about the evo, but until we can get real system access (yeah, i saw the root article, but i'll believe it when i see it), custom ROM's, etc, i'll stick with the N1. which, btw, is STILL the sexiest phone i've ever seen. girl i'm seeing has the incredible, and...no thanks. not in comparison. it's a nice phone, if you have to have verizon. but, i don't
i do however have to get a sprint device. so...i may have to break contract with tmo and get the evo. otherwise, my school is going to stick me with the freaking touch pro 2 as my pager. lord what a step back that will be. but, at least if i take that, i can keep my N1
Uh. What?
Incredible and Evo won't get FroYo until the end of this year.
How about we come back to this article then so we can point and laugh?
Having root >>>> anything else.
Have any high-end phones since the Nexus achieved full root? I mean cracked bootloader and all. Desire, Legend, new Droids - none have the kind of access we do. Heck, we may have the best fully root-able hardware HTC will ever release.
I dont think the Incredible is any better than the N1, i've played witht he incredible and it feels cheap plastic like and the camera sucks as well. I like the feel of the N1 and like the looks of it. The Evo is a whole different story...

They have "root" meaning they have su permissions. AFAIK they don't have write permissions to the partitions, so it's pretty worthless.
Only thing i regret about my Nexus One is that apparently the Desire and Incredible both have touchscreens that fixed the multitouch issues.
Other than that the idea of having basically a google developement phone surpasses any of the other current phones, maybe when we see a decent hardware upgrade, then it will be a different story, but hopefully Google continues to make new Nexus phones.

That is sad. So they have the same MT issue as us, a much smaller dev front, usb-bricking issues while flashing roms, no full solution for being rooted/unlocked...took htc ages to release the kernel...they won't see froyo for ages (officially).
Not much to be ... wait for it... desired

How many points does a Galaxy register again? I'm guessing more than 2
In the UK, the N1/Desire is still the King. Desire = UK incredible, but is LITERALLY an N1, and I doubt we will ever see the Evo here [not even a whisp of 4g network].
Even if they did, all the incredible has is the less buggy touch matrix, although this has been nicely 'fixed' in froyo. The evo is a different breed of phone, id never buy it purely based on the fact that i like thinks to fit in my pocket xD
Until I see a snapgradon 1.3+, 1GB RAM, a TRUE 8mp+ cam, froyo, new gen OLED/better, my N1 can sleep with my girl any day.
that makes two of us i love man I LOVE MY NEXUS ONE

haha my friend was a tad jealous of me. he has the Hero and i like his sense ui. but the minute froyo came out, i installed it. i showed him how i can play hulu, i showed him that i got live wallpapers (of course he doesn't have 2.1) and the rest of the froyo goodness. and outta jealousy, he was like "oh well im gonna get a phone thats better than that. im give to get the Evo 4G that has everything the nexus one has and more, including Android 2.2" and i was like "riiiiight. just like the hero was supposed to (officially) get 2.1 right?" and he stood quiet lol idk about all of you guys but i don't really care for 2 led lights. im good with just one. as for 4G, i like to have the freedom to switch between my N1, my BB Curve 8310, and my iPhone 3GS with the simple swap of a SIM card so im great with my Sexy Nexy

What will be the G2/Desire Z successor?

Let me first say that we all know that the Desire Z is an amazing phone and still is. It's got a great camera, speed, screen, features, keyboard, sound, unlocked bootloader, etc. However at the current moment there isn't really a great successor to it in my opinion. And by successor I don't mean a true successor of course. Let's take a look at some QWERTY phones on the market:
MyTouch 4G Slide
http://www.gsmarena.com/t_mobile_mytouch_4g_slide-4018.php
It's basically a G2 with slightly better specs and a better camera. Not much of an upgrade.
Droid 3
http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_droid_3-4036.php
Last time I heard it had a locked bootloader so it has very limited software support. Definitely not friendly in that department. Specs are better than the 4G Slide.
Captivate Glide
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i927_captivate_glide-4071.php
I had high hopes for this one. It has a lot of improvements such as a AMOLED screen, slightly bigger screen, and similar specs to the Galaxy S2. However, it is somewhat of a downgraded Galaxy S2 considering that it came out just recently as it lacks LTE support and it does not have a higher resolution than the G2. However Samsung is friendly to the open source community. Oh also no LED notification (Ahh!).
So if I had to pick now it would be the Captivate Glide but I am not going to. I am hoping that HTC will make the G3 and put all their top tier specs onto the QWERTY phone like they did with the G2, including a bigger and higher resolution screen, LTE support, quad core CPU, etc.
Long live the G2/Desire Z!
Oh and yes the Droid 4 is coming out. From the looks of it, it will be a Droid RAZR but in QWERTY.
Droid 4 sure looks interesting but will it make it to Europe ah probably will, under the name Milestone. I like the way the 4 basic android buttons are still present, hope ICS wont kill them in the future phones.
Not going to change my phone for a while tough DZ works great, had it for about a year now. And i suppose it depends also if these phones will get MIUI rom . But i'm interested to see HTC make G3, not just yet tough, next summer maybe. within a year i hope.
i was caught by this statement "However Samsung is friendly to the open source community. Oh also no LED notification (Ahh!)."
is HTC not dev friendly? me? yeah. sucks. they left Desire series. that includes our Z.
anyway going back to the topic. i prefer the Glide.
No offense but the g2's camera sucks. Video recording is like 20fps in areas slightly less than ideal lighting conditions and stills require a steady hand and ideal lighting.
The Captivate Glide sounded interesting at first. But the more I read, the more I'm disappointed.

Sounds like crappy exterior build quality, and bad keyboard. And as the OP mentioned, no LTE. Really not much of an upgrade from the G2/DZ, IMO.
And the 1 GHz CPU on the Captivate Glide seems obsolete out of the box, as the high end smartphones are going to 1.2 GHz and higher nowadays.
Like everyone here mention Droid 4 is awesome I dont like sammy software as i myself had epic 4g it was buggy on input that physical keyboard wasnt even optimize for the software like on full touch screen galaxy line. As im more in love with stock aka pure google or vanilla phones. I would wait for htc to release the G3 before deciding to get another plus all the apps i want i can get. Their no point upgrading if android market is supporting our phones. I love droid when it was the first one because of vanilla experience unless moto change their way i wont get the droid 4. Droid 3 is awesome but i dislike both Motoblur and Sense ui referring to htc phone on that. I rather have touchwiz before both. But it your pick on what phone your getting.
i wouldn't go as far as to say the DZ has a great screen. it actually kinda sucks. so I think the next best thing will be ANY phone with a keyboard, better screen, better camera, will probably be HTC (or moto now that google is running things there) and at the very least just as fast (but faster probably and probably dual core). so..... the MT4GS? lol
Look like g1 got android 4.0 os lol wow not even the first iphone got 4.0 os apple is for losers .

It's better than the Super AMOLED-Pentile window screens they put on the Galaxy S phones.

You honestly want to talk about android fragmentation?
Sure looks like we are in for a long wait until the next Scandinavian QWERTY Android is here. My DZ is still great though.

Yeah DZ rocks as long. Before i buy anything i probably wait for it to get MIUI. I don't like sense, not sure about motoblur/touchwiz, never used them. So i might even enjoy them.
Anyway i get the hardware i like and root it to get the firmware the way i like. I'd like to see G3 popping up in 9 months.
I honestly dont think the Htc g3 will appears for a while until t-mobile feel like making g2 users jump the wagon. Because mytouch slide 4g was the same screen size i didnt like that it had sense ui to be honest/.
Specs the mytouch 4g slide is better but i dont like sense ui, to me that not better in my opinion,if im going to root a phone i dont want to root it for Stock ui .
i want to have stock already just overclock it and use root explorer to delete the apps i dont like.

Dude this is in alpha it show that iphone that say android cant run higher then 1.6 to 2.1 is wrong?
Im just saying i had g1 when it was 1.0 and update 1.1 in march 2009, update 1.5 in late may to june 2009. update/upgrade 1.6 os in early october 2009.
Google g1 was best phone that run all version of all time.
I dont think the nexus one will past beyond Ice cream sandwich and if it do android 4.5 os or 5.0 jelly bean will be it last update.
Same with phone from late 2010 Either Ice cream sandwich or Jelly bean will be it last updates also.

p.s vaporware was duke nukem forever. You need several years of broken promises to be considered vaporware. in duke's case, something like a decade.

because you can root the phone and put in CM/MIUI/insertROMhere? Most people simply like the build and spec that HTC offers.
Sorry for this gravedig, but are there any new possible successors? I don't think so right?

I'm wondering the same thing, as one of my kids might be in the market for a new phone, and they like h/w keyboards.
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
