Sorting in Android....say what now? - Nexus One General

Is there plans to implement sorting by different fields in the future? Cause sorting by First Name then Last Name is not cutting it for my business contacts.
Is there any workaround?

I'm looking on the market now to see if there are any 3rd party contact managing apps. However, I wanted to point out that Android's contacts menu is googly as ever, and you should be able to type out (hold menu to bring up the soft KB at any time) just a few letters of the contact's name to select them.
Edit: I haven't tested this, and it says it's not fully compatible with Android 2.0, but I think you want aContacts. It's on the Android Market
From the description:
Application for speeding up searching contacts:
* Contact search by group, company
* T9 search (Eng,Russian,German,Hebrew,Swedish,Czech,Romanian,Polish)
* Search in any fields
* Grouping phone contacts
* Advanced call log
* Callback reminders
* Speed dial
New: Bug fixes, new options
Not fully compatible with Android 2.0!

The search through typing doesnt look at the company field unfortunately, so for now I'm just omitting the first/last name fields and putting my salespersons name in the notes field. =/
I'd be nice if they had a "sort by this field" option similart to the "make this number default" option for multiple numbers.

You can choose to show specific groups...but thats more time consuming than its worth imo.

Custom Contact Fields

Hey,
Does anyone know if it is possible, through the supplied T-Mobile 2.26 ROM or third party software, to create custom contact fields? For example, say I want to have one contact called Papa John's Pizza and inside that contact have three fields named Anytown, Springfield, and NYC each with a number. As it stands now I have to either make a seperate contact for each location or have one contact and make each location say home, work, and work2. The latter choice makes it near impossible to remember which number goes to which office. I have many contacts that have multiple numbers that do not fit neatly into the supplied fields. On my old S60 phone this was quiet a simple task but I just can't seem to figure it out on WM5. Thanks for the help.
You can use IneSoft Address Book to add custom contact fields. The extra fields will be save as Note.
To mark a phone number you can put the text inside the phone number itself. E.g.
Work: +123456789 (Springfield)
or even
Work: Springfield +123456789
where "Work:" is the field name provide by Contacts application. You can use any character that can't be dialed (e.g. not a digit, * or #). Though some letters may cause problems, e.g. 'p' may mean 'pause'... I write my comments in Russian and therefore has no such problems
I use this solution for a long time. It is not specific to an OS or application.
And yes, IneSoft Address Book is good, not only for additional fields! This was the first application I purchased for my TyTN.

This would be really neat if Voice Commander 1.6 would recognize it, but it doesn't.

Contact Searcher v4.0 ADDED: NEW SOFTWARE on 19/11/07

Many contacts info is stored in your handset.
When you need to call someone of the contacts , and you should
not remember their name or number clearly.
Your ppcs embedded contacts list software support searching by

In this software, you can search the contacts by their any
property values, or searching in all of their property
information.
You can find them easily with this software. You can find them by

In the search by listbox, choose a condition.
If you choose all, the software will fix all of the contacts
property.
if you choose company the software will fix all of the
contacts company name property.
For example, you choose company, and in the is textbox, you
input microsoft or micro,
this software will select the contacts which company name property
is microsoft or micro for you.
For example, you choose all, and in the is textbox, you input
California,
this software will select the contacts which all properties
values have California string.
Not forget, click the button search, it will do searching.
The listbox will appeared the searching results after you click
search.
If want to call or sms someone of them, click it in the listbox
or move the cursor to him and
click the call & sms button.

Challenge: link to specific contact

I would like to create a shortcut to a specific contact so that clicking on it takes you to the details page of that particular contact from where you can then choose how to contact that person (email, text, mobile phone, home phone, work phone).
So I've been messing with an lnk file:
1000#\Windows\poutlook.exe contacts ...
I tried -new as a command line parameter, and that works. I cannot figure out how to go to a specific contact. Then I found this discouraging thread:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa454208.aspx
There must be some way to do this. HTC Home has a similar function in their contacts tab. When you tap and hold a contact it takes you to that contact's detail page.
My end goal is to incorporate this into Mortbuttons ... I want a menu of favorite contacts, so when I click on any one, it takes me to the page where I can choose how to contact them. I'm surprised this doesn't exist, because that is the most intuitive way to do things. First you think of whom you want to contact, and only THEN do you think of how to contact them.
The challenge is up!
here's how its done
20#"\Windows\cprog.exe"-url tel: 0000000
that doesn't work. that calls the given phone number. I am looking for a link to a person's contact entry in Contacts. Please read my post above carefully.
I'd be interested in that as well. Anyone?
Wrote it already in my forum, but just in case...
I don't know of any way to do this from command line.
There is a way to show the contact page with COM/POOM (interface for programmers), which will be implemented in the upcoming MortButtons beta (probably tonight - CET).
It wasn't available so far because I still use eVC4 (because it's free and allows more easy support of systems up to including WM2003SE), which doesn't support new features of WM5 (like contact info page, contact image, contact ringtone, etc.) without some workarounds...

Help on searching contacts for locations,e tc.

I'm new to the android, mostly I like it, but there is one thing that is driving me nuts. I don't know if I'm missing something or stupid or what.
There are a number of times I have gotten to my list of contacts - i.e. from Google Maps defining a location to navigate to, or creating a shortcut to a contact- that I get presented with a list of all my contacts (1500+) and no apparent way to search the list.
If I press the search button it brings up the contact search, but then I seem to have lost the app that wanted the contact. Is there a way to do a search on the contacts and then have it get entered into the original app? I also tried google gesture search, which was great, but I can't figure out how to do anything with the contact other than call them.
I'm beginning to think I am dense or something, please help.
if i understand correctly, i think you want to navigate to a specific contact's address from google maps?
if so, all you need to do is, while in google maps, in the destination field just type the contacts name. and if you have their address saved in your contacts it should just pop up with their address.
For maps tha'ts great, I must remember not to rush things at traffic lights.
However, the thing I am still having trouble with is creating direct dial shortcuts. I go to create the shortcut, and get a long list of contacts and A-Z on the right. I can pick a letter, but there are still hundreds of phone numbers to go through. There is no search box available at that point - I tried pushing the search button and it searches the contact list, but then all I can do is call the contact, not create a shortcut. I tried BetterCut and it doesn't have the A-Z selector.
Am i missing something here too?
This is the problem of not having a physical keyboard. And not having gestures in all lists. What you are doing is exactly what I want to do many times and there is unfortunately no way around it except scrolling up and down a list. Very annoying idiom started by the iPhone and unfortunately copied by Android. There is simply no way to filter lists unless every list is accompanied by a filter text field.

AContact, customizable dialer and contact manager, would like to know your thoughts

Tired of your old contact list? Want a new T9 dialer? Try out AContact, a fully customizable contact app with a brand new dialer. AContact is the only Contact manager that has a smooth scrollable user interface, so you never have to reach to the top of the screen to switch between tabs.
Features:
* T9 search/dialer pad.
* Customizable screens, mix & match functions you like.
* Adjustable text size, small or big as you wish.
* The only dialer app with full group support for Google account.
* Customizable contact list.
* Three keyboard style in contact list: collapsible bottom keyboard, right side vertical IPhone like keyboard, no keyboard.
* Filterable call history, favorite contact list.
* Delete/Clean call log by contact name or number.
Attached with this thread is a beta version of the next release. We would like to know how everyone think about this.
If you want to install the one from Google's Android Market(previous version), just search "movesti" in android market, then look for AContact.
Very very nice application you have got here. A huge improvement on the stock android interface, and much better than any other contact app I have used, including HTC dialer I would happily buy this on the market when it becomes a fully complete application. The only suggestion/amendment I would make, its to have the android status bar enabled as standard (not full screen mode) I think it may confuse less tech savvy users.

Yeah, We thought about this as well. The problem is, on some small screens, there won't be much space left if not in full screen mode. Probably we should set a default value based on the screen resolution of user's phone.
Wow, probably the best I've used.
I think I saw this app a few months ago when it had a blue ui that I wasn't really a fan of and no icon. Whatever the case, this looks and works amazing (and I'm a big fan of applications that you can swipe through like this). And the dialer feels really nice as well.
Great job.

Yeah, we posted a while back in the themes forum, asking for some idea of themes. Now this is implemented in the app.
Its a great dialer! However i would like to suggest adding company name in the T9 search fields, and adding it in the contact details which are displayed in dialer screen.
This would be great!

We have plans to add more support for displaying extra information. You would be able to select what information to display together with contact names, company name, email address etc...

Looks good. I'd like to suggest having seperate icons for the dialer tab and the contacts tab. Would make it more useful when putting it on the launcher dock.
Other than that, great work!

Good idea, will add that in the next releases.
Unusable on froyo dell streak. App will not go to portrait mode. Stuck in landscape.
Would also like clearer dialpad with better contrast

Sorry landscape is not supported right now. A lot work need to be done in order to support that.
A (maybe known) bug: When calling to a contact from the dialer screen with a single tap - its calling the first phone number. Its not reading the default (primary) number from contacts database.

When there is no input in the dialer, it shows the recent call log, and if you press the dial button then, it'll call that number in the log, as the dialer assumes you are calling an entry from the call log.
If you input some texts into the dialer, a matched contact list will show up, if you press to call any contact then, it'll call that contact's primary number.

I agree - that's a possible behavior. The other way is when I input some text, and there is a match - first check if there's a recent call, and if that's true - offer that number; if false offer contacts primary number.
Anyway this is not the case for me.
Scenario:
Contact with a home and mobile number;
Search for that contact
Dialer offers to dial home number, but the mobile number is set as a primary number.
The primary number is set through Sense.

I see what you mean.
Right now, when you input some digits, what happens is
1. contact display name is searched,
2. contact number is searched.
Your call history is not searched (We should change to include that as well)
For your problem, the primary number dialing, we'll go and find a htc sense see if that happens. Probably there is some difference between sense and google's default implementation.
Anyway, will let you know when we figure that out.
Very nice work indeed!
I hope you can make a version what can totally replace the AOSP stock version - this one is way more superior!
A few additions:
- Add Facebook and Twitter accounts' contacts' images syncing - for now, any other contact than the GMail ones have no image (stock image)
- Add option for special sorting of names, and special name display. Like, here in Hungary, we say "Smith Jonathan" (translated name) instead of "Jonathan Smith" or "Smith, Jonathan". The best would be if it could be controlled by language files. Also, I am going to make the Hungarian language, want it?
- The favorite screen's selection has the good old Android background light-up. Can you remove that?
For now, that's all the problem I've found, but still experimenting around it

Thanks for the suggestions. They are all good ones
* For Facebook and twitter contacts, we still have to invest some more time, but it will be there.
* We already have support for sorting by first & last name, no name display though, we plan to add that very soon.
* We plan to add more language support after we implement themes, it would be great if we can use some help. Could you send a email to us [email protected] so we know how to reach you then.
* what is the " good old Android background light-up"?
Another HTC Sense (maybe) related bug:
I keep my contacts synced with my google account and facebook for htc sense. But in phonebook (people) options I've set the view option - only show google contacts. So the result is I can not see facebook contacts in htc or acontact dialer. Nothings wrong here.
But...:
Let's say I have John A. - a facebook contact
I have also John B. - a google contact.
So I am searching for John from dialer screen.
There's a result - John B.
When I select John B. its calling John A.
It may create some awkward situations

That looks like a big problem - calling the wrong number.
Could you send us an email [email protected] so we can keep track of this problem.
We don't have facebook access here so can't test it.
For the primary number problem, I have tested it on htc desire, 2.1 android, it's showing two entries for two different numbers. Not sure how to make it one entry. Will try to find other phones to test.
