I woke up this morning to find my 8525 sitting in my computer chair as usual. Only to reach over and grab it, and ....its sitting in three inches of water. I have no idea what happened, or how it got there. All i know is my phone wont turn on, and is totally dead. Is there ANYTHING that can be done to right this horrid tragedy? Any help would be a gift from god. Thanks

Let it dry out before trying to use it. Since it's wet, you have nothing to lose by taking it apart to facilitate this. You could dry it faster by using a hair dryer but NOT on the heated setting.
agreed; but let it dry for a day or two before you try, you should also put it somewhere that will provide additional moisture evaporation (gas oven with pilot lights or a furnace room, behind a PC fan or the like). i saved my old Sony S710a by letting it bake in my hot car for about 6 hours while i was at work. just make sure its totally dry before you try, and considering you already voided the warranty with the pool of water incident, you might as well take it apart if you can to make sure its completely dry.

Tried putting the battery back in after about a good 4-5 hours of being in the sun. All i get is a crackling noise when i try to place the battery to the metal conductors
Ewww.. I know it is stressful for you not to switch on the phone, but doing that will just make matter worst. Since you said that it wont turn on, I presume that you've tried it once (Strike 1), and you did it again 4-5 hours later (Strike 2), which usually others just leave it for at least 1 day (but probably the sun does help).
Can you identify what water is it? Can there be mineral within? Which may cause a short circuit somewhere in the phone. You'll need to open up the phone and clean it up somehow.. either DIY or get some phone shop people to do it. Your warranty is 'washed' anyway.

OK, this comes from my many decades in the electronics industry.
1. PULL the battery. Do not put it back in in few hours.
2. Where did the water come from? Was it really water or? You need to know this. It's real important because mostlikly the PCB is contaminated. Anything that got inside has most likely contaminated the board and will cause shorts, intermitent contacts and the like. Even rain or spring water, it's the minerals...
What you have to do most likely is disassemble the unit. Get a gallon of DISTILLED (not Spring) water. Distilled, also know as deionized is free of all minerals. You are going to have to carefully submerge the board without the LCD in the water and gently rub it with a very soft tooth brush while underwater. Next take it out and put in another bath of distilled water. Agitate it gently. This proces should remove any contamination as long as the offending liquid is not sticky or heavily acidic or base. In the case of the later 2, you are most likely screwed.
Ok, so now you have a wet board. Genly shake the excess water off of it. Turn your oven onto WARM. Nothing above 150 F. Let it warm up and then shut the oven off. Put the PCB in the middle of the oven directly on the rack, close the door and come back 8 to 10 hours later. If the board isn't dry, repeat the steps again.
If you are luck and didn't fry it from trying to power it up, it may work again.
I have saved lots of radio equipment from rain & saltwater submergence this way.

I used to have a motorola and dropped it into a bucket of water. Dried out in a few days and it was working fine.
my 8525 recently fell in the sink. as soon as i seen it in the sink i pulled the battery out. rigged the phone up on something in the floor so air could ventilate under and over, set the hair dryer on high (but without the heat) and 5 or so ventilation fans from a desktop pc wired to a 9v battery. let the hair dryer go for about 15 minutes but left the fans on over night. took the phone with me to school the next day and left it in the car during both of my classes. came out put the battery in and powered it up. works just fine now

ive heard the rice thing works, ive alway wanted to flush with alcohol, that would in theory dilute the water and the alcohol would dry out faster.
Ok so heres the deal. I put the battery in. Power up the phone, gets to the vp3g startup screen, then fades to white. Could someone point me in the direction of a tutorial that shows me how to disassemble a Hermes CORRECTLY.
Hopefully ill be able to give it a DI Water bath and breath a little life back into her. Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it
It's drying out slowly. I had a Hermes that did the same thing - eventually getting to the "screen behavior" you describe. I never fully disassembled it. I just let it sit open, with the battery out, keyboard pulled out, and the back off. Eventually (after leaving overnight), it was fine. Worked normal ever since that with one exception.. I had forgotten to pull the SD card. The SD socket never worked again :-(
Moral of the story: don't forget to take out the SD card.

yeah i got lucky. when mine fell in the sink i had the SD card out and in the laptop doing hw. so i guess im really lucky that the sd socket still works
Not worried about the SD card as much... Anyway, Ive popped the back off of my 8525 after removing a couple screws. On the back of the circuit board there is white material that can be wiped off with a little rubbing alcohol and an ear swab. What is that crap? Ill go further in depth here soon once it fully drys. I sure hope I can get this thing running again, birthday is the 13th and would be a nice little gift to myself to get the phone working. Thanks for the help guys

If it fades to white, it is still wet.
You need to let it dry a lot longer before trying to use it.

Well, those are either stuff from the water or stuff from your phone that is washed and gathered to form some dangerous circuits (much like coffee water rings, that things tend to get to the edge of waters). These stuff may conduct electricity, hence making your phone goes nuts. Search and destroy all these 'crap' Good luck. Don't try the phone unnecessarily until you are sure that all 'crap's are gone. One of these 'crap' may potentially kill your phone (ok, it is usually not that serious, but just incase )
Sad story, I was lucky with similar story, but much cheaper. I left my Nokia BH-600 Blue Tooth Head set in my panties and give them to washing-mashine. 40 degrees program for 30 minutes ended by wringing on 800 turns/minute
When I found it in the pocket I just left it to wither up and it didn’t worked. So I tried to re-charge it and WOW it works and the battery has normal capacity.

Hi, dropped it in the toilet today.
Been drying it off for 7 hours in front of a heated fan. Tried to turn it on, the HTC screen comes up but it's really faint so I took the battery out straight away.
What are the chances of it working again?

So you took the battery out after the 7 hours? - Not good in such cases the first thing to do is always to take out the battery - However I had a similiar problem a while ago - but with a nokia phone - local electronics store took it to repair it for free but **** happens I sim unlocked it and they told me I had to pay 200 bucks for the repair - I googled a bit and found that you should take the whole device apart and try everything seperated then put every single part into ethanol (I think it was ethanol not shure :S) over night and in the morning let it dry - repeat up to 5 times - if no hardware was fried everything should work again - my phone worked again
No, I took the battery out after like 20 seconds.
I then took it apart and wiped it off and put it in front of a heated fan for about 7 hours!!!!
I dropped my 8125 in a cup of Vodka and Sprite and took the battery out right away. Let it dry out for 12 hours, turned it on and got a white screen. Took the battery out again and decided to order an 8525 to replace it thinking it was dead. Hours later, I tried to start the 8125 again and it magically started working. Guess it was a long hangover but just shows that given enough time, it might come back.
WELL... left it in the airing cupboard overnight.
It now turns on fine, the screen is working but I can still see a little bit of water but other than that it all works fine.
Going to leave it in front of the heater again today to hopefully clear the last of it up.

The best way to recover a water damaged device is to get yourself a good denture brush and some denatured alcohol. Take the device apart down to its base components. The board, LCD board components for your soft keys ect. The biggest problem that I've experienced is that it sometimes fries out the flash for the camera which will stay on. Now with your denatured alcohol and your brush just gentle scrub the board components and the connections this will absorb the moisture upon evaporation. Also its always good to have a nice heat gun thats also a good way to reflow contact points on the board say you have connection issues with your mini USB port. I've been doing electronics repair on PDA and cell phone devices for sometime. So anyone who has questions feel free to ask. I hate hearing about people who dump 200 dollars for a repair that you can fix by spending 5 dollars.

+1, the best way to clean your water damaged device and have hope of it working again.
It may take a while to work properly again; my 8525 went into water not once but twice! The first time I thought it was dead--lights on but only white screen. Had instantly removed battery and opened it up as much as I good and took some canned air to it. Kept checking it over the next week without success so went and bought another.
Anyway, about 3 weeks after the dunking I put the battery back in and on a whim turned it on and surprise!, works fine. This became my back up phone that I later took to Africa with me where I proceeded to drop it in a toilet. Since the air temp was 130 degrees it didn't take long to dry out and it's still kicking!!! Important point is to immediately remove the battery, take the device apart as much as you can, dry completely over a few days then attempt to turn on.

Mine went into the toilet this morning. I have disassembled it according to the directions (http://inuchanbt.blog54.fc2.com/blog-entry-100.html) and put it all back together after cleaning surfaces and connectors with alcohol.
It powers up now, which is far better than it was doing just after I fished it out of the pot. USB connection works, speaker phone works, etc.
However, touch screen does not. If I hold the screen at a certain angle I can see a faint outline of where water has creeped into the screen about 1/2 of the way across. Touch screen worked decently on first power up but now it does not work at all. All buttons work okay.
I am going to disassemble again after work and inspect the screen more closely. Hopefully will save me from having to replace the machine!

...and if its just the screen that doesnt work, thats a cheep, easy fix!
I just reassembled after cleaning again and touchscreen works.

Those disassembly photos were EXTREMELY helpful; thanks MUCH to whoever originally posted them.
I managed to spill an entire beer on mine, turned it off and let it dry as above,. everything worked great but the scroll wheel started to get confused as to which way i was scrolling it, cleaned as above with alcohol and no problems. Actually I have found that the scrollwheel on my tytn gets hinky every couple of months or so and have taken to cleaning it regularly, onve youget over the inital fear of opening up your baby it's a breeze.
That reminds me of my old Siemens SX1 *chuckles* i went swimming in the sea and i forgot i had it in my pocket.. after 15min i suddenly felt it.. I dashed to the shore and pulled it out of my pocket.. And it was still running! While water was dripping out!
And to be honest, i never cleaned it afterwards. i just let it dry in its current state.. but hell that SX1 has endured some hazzards, and its still working ^^

Hmmm. The keyboard doesn't work. It worked yesterday. Neither does the screen rotate when I slide.
I guess it will have to come apart again.
The connector had popped loose, or maybe I didn't connect it at all yesterday.
Anyway, works great, and the water in the backlight is noticeably less. It is drying on its own.

O dropped my Atom in a mop bucket once.
Took battery out and tried to dry but was FUBAR. Sold it on eBay for $90AUD =D used that money to get a Hermes for $400AUD

Did you flush before dropping the phone? If not, make sure to clean out all the "brown bits"
today i was cleaning the pool, since the leather pouch only clips on and doesnt actually have lashes to put the belt through it got lose and fell into the pool, fully submerged. it took me about 20 seconds to get to it and get it back out.
as soon as i had it out i saw it restart by itself. immediately took out the battery, put it in front of the heater and had it there for about 3 hours.
turned it back on and it works just fine. everything is try.
i guess thats nice to know, lol.....seems to be very water friendly....lol

I would really recommend taking it apart and letting it sit out for a day or two to completely dry out. There is bound to still be some water in the phone. But it sounds like you got real lucky

Bad idea. The phone works as is. Clearly the water didn't penetrate very far into the device. If you soak it in water,distilled or otherwise,your going to be worse off. If you had a little water inside,then your best bet is to dissasemble it,and clean the boards with 90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit in a warm place for a few days. Do not get this on the display however,it will destroy it. (I destroyed a laptop panel once by using to much IPA on a paper towel so I speak from had experience)

Good to hear. People usually over-react to dropping electronics in water. Water does not damage electronics just because its there, and that seems to be what people think. The water would have to cover a full surface area of open contacts and create a short which destroy's some component or the whole device.
Its like the peeing on the electric fence thing. You don't get shocked unless you are close enough to create a complete path for electricity to flow.
Anyway, good to hear your phone survived, but its no miracle. Its probably more due to good hardware and EMC design that sealed the components well enough.
Yeah it's usually not the submersion that damages stuff it's either shorting out or damage during the fall. A few winters ago a buddy of mine was bringing some stuff back home for winter break (college) and he forgot to take his computer out of the bed of the pickup truck. It got snowed and rained on all night long. He took it in the house and disassembeled the entire thing to let it dry. Put it back together and it fired right up...
I dropped my old 6700 in a bloody mary once, I did the same thing, took out the battery, and put it in the sun for a day it worked like a charm...the key is pulling the battery ASAP...water is "pretty much" harmless without electricity, it's when those two mix that you're gonna have trouble...
I immediately removed it from the water, and desperately tried to remove the back case to remove the battery (its quite hard when the phone is wet) i got there eventually though.
The screen was flickering whilst the phone was still on, and the water sensitive stickers on the battery and phone are both pink. I've blow dried it for about 10 minutes haven't tried to start it back up yet.... any suggestions?

DON'T start it for a few days. Put it in a warm place, leave it to dry for 48-72 hours and pray it works when you turn it on.
yeah just be patient and wait about 3-4 days to dry. but do not put it under direct sunlight
....and wash your hands
Try to put into bag with rice, and leave for couple of days...

Basically you just need to make sure you dry it out thoroughly. Don't try to rush this process in a few hours. All the posts about leaving it somewhere warm (like an airing cupboard) are correct. Don't put it on top of a radiator or hot pipe, or in the sun as already suggested. The idea of putting it in a bag of rice is to help draw the moisture out. Never tried this method myself.... You really must be patient with this - managed to save my Touch Pro that got soaked in the rain last year....
okay so i've put the phone the battery and the sim on top of some rice in a bad behind my tv in my bedroom
rice like the others said or if you are a cigar person (or know someone who is) place it in an acrylic humidor w/ humidification beans.......I resurrected a M$ ZUNE my wife dropped in a rain puddle by doing this in my humidor

my wife washed my cellphone once (left in pocket after heavy night of drinking). Took the battery out, let it sit on a counter for about a week. Phone recovered though it took the screen a while for the colors to all show properly.
I have read where people put their oven on warm and leave it overnight. I don't think this will hurt the phone since their won't be a power source in it.

I dried it out under a hand dryer, then powered it up straight away. In hindsight this was pretty stupid, but it booted up ok. The only problem being the NAVPANEL would randomly appear and require a reboot. The next day that problem had gone away, and was replaced with a new problem - the Volume down button being jammed on! Also the battery life was reduced to about 10 hours. After a further 48 hours and a blast with compressed air (around the volume buttons) the phone has returned to 100% normal use - even the battery life is getting better, now upto about 36-42 hrs..... but I have bought a replacement for that anyway!!

Rice is good, unless you have any silica gel kicking about, the stuff you get in electronic packaging in the little paper bags/sachets that say "do not eat".
But yes, definately don't do what the majority do...

Happens about once a week in the PC store I work at. You could also try stripping it after it's dried and going over it with a carbon pen to remove any corrosion/residue.
After removing the battery, SIM, and MicroSD and gently removing any surface water.
One trick I found is to put a phone in the path of hot dry air for 30 minutes to a couple of hours. A clothes dryer vent works wonderfully for this since its temperature controlled (and timed) to keep from destroying the fabric in your clothes, and hot enough to allow water to evaporate. If you have access to your dryer vent hose, unhook it and rest it on top of the dryer and put your phone in the path (at least 4 to 6" from the opening). It's worked for 2 phones so far. One being my wife's Motorola, and one my Touchpro. If you have a dryer with an insert for shoes, you could use that as well, although I would put the phone on something to keep it from vibrating off.
You could use a hair dryer but keep in mind that hair dryers are not designed to be run continuously and the temperature is not technically regulated.
The trick is to get the temperature of the whole phone up to about 130 to 140 degrees and the water will evaporate. I would avoid shaking the water out of the phone or using pressureized air since that will push water into the delicate connectors, keypad matrix, screen, etc.
Let me give you a more scientific approach to your problem, i will try to explain as better as i can since english aint my primary language.
After you drop it in the water, your phone will never be the same for couple of reasons. First of all, when the water will dry, salt will "sit" on the connections and the weldings of the connectors, and that will slowly but steadily eat them. My saying is : " Never trust a phone that was dropped into water/coffee ". For you to be sure of your phone you need to strip it, and clean it with a spray for electrical appliances. Now there are 2 types of those sprays, one with oil and one with no oil in it. For your thing you need the NO-OIL one. Thats to make sure you wont get a loose joint and eventually your phone wont get broken.
If you dont feel like opening your phone and you dont feel comfortable with it, just ignore my post and just dry it out. What is 100% sure is that at some point it will break down, it depends on when though, from hardware to hardware.
Just my 2 cents.
Any time I get anything wet I IMMEDIATELY remove the battery, then I remove anything else I can from it: Sim Card, Memory Cards, etc. I don't like the rice idea because rice ALWAYS ends up stuck somewhere inside. I prefer setting my phone on some foil out in the sun for a bit (provided it's not too hot out) or just leaving it somewhere where it's warm to dry out. DO NOT BY ANY MEANS put the battery back in or turn it on until it is COMPLETELY dry. A minimum of a day if you even want to begin to chance it. If it was dropped in something other than relatively clean fresh water, I would keep everything out of it (battery, sim, memory cards, etc.) and dip it in a cup of distilled water a few times to clean any particles off, then let it dry again completely before turning it on. Just because an electronic gets wet, doesn't mean it won't work. The only way to kill it really is if you power it back on or the battery shorts it.
I went swimming at the lake with my old Nokia 5310 for 10 minutes before remembering it was in my pocket, I immediately took everything out when I remembered and left it in the sun for 8 hours and it worked fine for a year after until I threw it into a wall as hard as I could due to a frustrating girlfriend haha
U may have problems in the future... Since it was submerged in water some components will begin to rust... I suggest u take it to a mobile service shop so they can tell u what to do, or maybe they can fix it...
So I am a funny guy and because I am funny I went swimming in my hot tub fully clothed, forgetting that I usually keep my phone in my left front pocket...
I'll spare you the reasons behind this and the details but I couldn't find anything on these forums about a wet Galaxy. I suppose most of you are simply more cautious than I. Anyways, I figured I will share my story and update everyone on how things work out so perhaps if somebody else succumbs to such a tragedy they will have some info and perhaps some hope.
Nearly the instant I go in the hot tub I realized my phone was in my pocket. I don't think the water had even soaked entirely through my jeans before I jumped up and pulled it out. It was definitely wet though. I through it to my brother who caught it, in a matter of about 2 seconds the screen turned on, got all liney and scrambled and the phone shut off.
I tore the battery out, SIM, and sd and rushed it to a towel to dry it off. I shook it until I couldn't get anymore water to come out of the ports and stuck it into a bowl of rice.
Now I shall wait. I think tomorrow evening I am going to move it from the rice to behind my Xbox and leave it on overnight with the warm air from the fans blowing on it and then back into the rice until Tuesday evening when I might try it.
Does anybody have any ideas? Suggestions? Some encouraging words perhaps? Anything is appreciated.

I only ever lost one phone to water damage. But that was because it got torrentially downpoured on for about 5 minutes.
It still mostly worked, but some keys would sometimes work and sometimes not, and the microphone died.
I was an idiot though and didnt dry it out immediately. I think you might just get out of this one unscathed.
I would wait about 4 days before you put the battery back in... an air conditioner would be better since it will blow really dry air on it.. if not just stick it someplace there is lots of air flow.
I have drop a few things in the water.. once a HTC magic.. LOL it was about 10days before it would work.. but it worked great after.. just some water spots on the inside of the screen but other then that it was good.
Just make sure its really bone dry before you turn it back on. A couple days in the rice should do the trick. After that just hope you dont get corrosion. At least it was fresh water.

I have been through many phones (cheap dumbphones) in the past and have went swimming with a cellphone 4 times in total, . . . and also lost one in a dumpster. 2ice with one phone. I have been able to recover them successfully every single time except one.
The second time I took one of my phones in the water it was in a hot tub and I was in there for about 5 mins before I realized it. It started vibrating violently in my pocket (i guess the water connected the circuit) so I took out the battery and left it to dry for about 4 days. It worked fine after that, but about a month later the screen stopped working.
I have found that as long as it isn't in the water too long it should work fine as long as you take out the battery right away and give it enough time to dry.
Since you're dealing with an expensive phone here, I would leave it for at least 5 or 5 days to dry just to be sure. Let me know how it goes!
P.S. I just bought a Galaxy S from Bell in Canada and it is my first smartphone. I hope I can keep it out of the water, and the dumpster!

I've been considering buying them, because I enjoy the flexibility of being able to jog regardless of weather, without worrying if it might rain. You can also buy special double seal plastic bags, but I wouldn't trust those.
They are expensive, but probably the biggest threat to my phone is getting it wet..
If it doesn't come back to life, make sure it is ABSOLUTELY dry inside (leave it on a radiator for a week, or similar) then send it to the Service Desk people.
I had a similar issue with an iPod (got caught in a downpour on my bike), and that was the collective wisdom frm the Internet. They exhanged it for me (apparently the iPod folks don't do repairs, but just look for obvious signs of abuse, like oxidation, water, impacts).
No idea how samsug work - but as long as it's dry and the accident is quite recent, hopefully there won't be any telltale signs inside.
For the next time - DON'T switch it on until the phone is absolutely dry inside. Whipping the battery out asap to avoid shortcircuits as well.

Well, my last phone, Samsung Omnia was actually ok with some water. It dropped in someones hottub once. It was dark there (wasnt my hottub lol) and couldnt find it. So after a minute or 5 i figured I'd call to see what would happen.
Screen turned on, and started vibrating so it was easy to find. Turned it off, took it home, opened her up, put it on the radiator and went to bed. Everything was fine the next day. Never had any problems with it after that.

Give it a few days... it will dry out and be as new.
My previous phone was a HTC Touch Diamond. I completely submerged it in water for about 5 seconds by accident and it experienced the same issues yours did. (Lines and the like).
The screen was toast (or so I thought), but the phone seemed to work via USB hook up to the computer.
So I went out and I bought a replacement phone after a couple of days. I then proceeded, late at night, to hook up my old phone to extract all information and transfer it over... while I was doing so, I was paying attention to my laptop screen, when I saw a bright light out of the corner of my eye. I looked down and my phone came completely back to life.
Moral of the story was I should have waited longer, but I did sell the newer phone for a $20 profit on kijiji.
Don't rush it like I did (unless there is warranty that covers this somehow)... it will come back.
So basically the story.. My girlfriend and I were bored just wandering around the house thinking of something to do. We went outside and she sat in the hammock which faces away from the hot tub. I thought it would be hilarious for her to turn around and I would just be fully clothed sitting in the hot tub with my slippers and all on.... I suppose it may be funny but before she even turned to see I was rushing to get out and throwing my phone at my brother telling him to get the battery out. Anyways, perhaps it was a bad idea xD and turned out to be not so funny for me. She laughed....
So what I did:
Took out the battery and dried the phone as much as I could with a towel and shaking the water out, I even sucked on the ports a bit in an attempt to get the way out haha.
Then I threw the phone into a container of brown rice which wasn't sealed, after about 3 hours of being in the container I decided to switch it to a sealed ziplock back which I squished all the air out of. For some reason this seemed more logical. I think I should have probably tried to blow dry the phone with a low heat setting first or perhaps used a vacuum to suck the water out. But I didn't.
After about 21 hours in the rice I took it out and blow dried it on the low heat setting (tested on my skin to make sure it wasn't too hot) and did that for about 20 minutes then put it into a home made wind tunnel which basically was done with a blow drier and a fan which forced the warm air into a small space that the phone was in. I left that for about 3 hours and then back into the rice for another night and day (maybe 18 hours or something, too lazy to count).
I haven't plugged it in yet and am just about to so I will stop typing now and test it.
SIM, SD card, Battery all in. Power button pressed.....
Screens on and looks great, sound works great and everything booted up just fine!
It seems as if everything is working fine, good signal to network, wifi works. It might even sound better than before jk haha. All the buttons are working and nothing on the touch screen seems to be off. No bubbles or problems visible underneath the screen. Camera works.
Everything works!!
So I hope this helps somebody out if it happens to them. Rice seems to do the trick. Don't rush it. I am so happy
Did you test your GPS? Sounds like a potential fix.

IMO two days is not enough time for a phone to dry out completely. I would at least leave it a week before start using it regularly.

I also think 2 days might have been a bit quick but then that air tunnel idea was clever and i think that will have helped a lot.
As for sending phones back under warranty, i doubt that would work because as far as i know when water dries it leaves a stain. I might be wrong on that though - mines stayed dry so far
