OH GOD HELP ME!!!

man this is one,i was feeding my cat before i headed off the bed with my exec in the side pocket of my jacket, as i bent over i felt my exec slip and before i knew it, it landed in the cats water bowl..
like a ninja i grabbed it so it was under for maybe .5 of a second, i dryed it out over night with toilet paper and a hair dryer, it doesnt turn on, but when i plug it in over usb, windows see;s it and instead of a green light for charging i get a red one.. can my exec be saved?? i love her dearly

the title is thus, as i have dropped my $1200 mobile into a bowl of water on this mobile is stored my day to day running of my company, it is 11pm on a sunday night and i have lost all the infomation i need to pull a pay cheque for the following week, so i belive the title is not retarded i belive it is fair.. lets see what you say when you drop yours in a pool/spa..

Normally when you get a red light it means that your exec is not recognizing that there is a battery inside it.
Perhaps check the battery? Is it seated right after the fall? could water have got inside the battery? Maybe your exec is OK but your batt is dead
I read somewhere that drying with heat ie hair dryer is a big no no - they need to dry naturally.
I shudder at the thought of this happening to me - but i read elsewhere that a guy dropped his in a puddle and it lived - so maybe you'll be lucky too.

cool, im over it, im sure its dead, so all i can do i pull it apart and clean all the boards and hope for the best..
as soon as it hit the water i pulled the battery pack off it, so less than a 3 seconds wet, then with a hairdryer on low.. i heated the case so i belive i got most of the water...
now.. when i plugged i tried to active sync it.. it didnt sync.. but windows found a usb device.. unplugged it.. ready to be pulled apart.. i got my t9 torx screws and switch cleaner anti static gloves/cloths also called into work sick,,.
still not sure about the red light tho.. atleast i got a light i guess.

cool im happy now, after doing an all nighter, and reading the serivce pdf, i pulled it apart blasted it with board cleaner and soaked all the boards.. dryed them by hand.. 6hrs and 14 cups of coffee later its back up :lol:
its up 110% i say 110% because before it took a bath it was looking grubby, bits of crap in the cracks etc etc.. now it looks brand new and works..
now if this should happen to anyone else i took the following steps
as soon as you get your hands back on it.. pull the battery out straight away..
wrap in a clean cleaning towl and gently shake the excess water out of the device
now this part is open to debate
i used a hair dryer to dry the device before i opened it.. on a low heat.. not directly onto the device.. but to heat it..
i rested the device on the heating vent for 4 hrs before cracking it open.
i have to say the confidential service manuel PDF is great thanks guys!!..
after opening the device.. i noticed a few spots of residual crap.. not much, it was easy to clean, few hairy moments put it back together fired it up and now its on the active sync doing its thing, the screen is bright and very clean

I'd just like to point out to anyone reading this that if your Universal is looking a bit on the grubby side, chucking into the cat's water bowl and taking a sickie next day to get it all dried out is probably not the best way to go about cleaning it. You run a fairly good chance of a broken phone, and a scratched nose from your very pissed off cat. :lol:

We have a radio technician as one of the moderators over on MTekk and he recommends Isoprophil Alcohol (from **** Smith) to expel the water. Ironically it was only a couple of days after he told us what to do that I dropped my XdaII down the toilet (flushed fortunately)!
Steps:
1. PULL THE BATTERY! It is current PLUS water which damages the boards.
2. If you have one (and can)... pull the backup battery.
3. Hold the thing tight and spin it around at arms length to spin out as much water as possible.
4. Open the thing in a clean area on some kitchen towel (or whatever) and fairly drown the boards in the Alcohol, this dispels the water. Use a number of orientations to get the stuff everywhere - under components is the important place. Try not to drown the screen itself, any water in there will disperse over a few days.
5. Use some canned compressed air to blow under suspect areas - gently and not too close or condensation forms, it's cold stuff.
6. Allow the device a good few hours to dry in a naturally warm, but not hot, area. Do NOT use a hair dryer, it can overheat the tiny compnents and literally blow them off the board.
7. Cross your fingers/pray/whatever and fire it up.
My backup battery didn't survive as I couldn't remove it and it shorted out, but the device has been pretty good since, all things considered. A few tiny marks in the screen is the only visible sign.
p.s. While I understand your feelings the post title really is crap, I nearly didn't bother to look.

Dear Mofotron, sounds to me like your device not restarting had more to do with your heating it up for 4 hours. Next time go straight for the isopropryl (aka rubbing) alcolhol and flush all the water out that way. :twisted:

If you're looking for a good backup program, I suggest using SPB Software Backup....

Well its been almost a week now and i cant belive my luck, everytime i look at it, i get flashbacks of seeing it sitting in the bottom on the water bowl with the camera flash flickering.
ive had a zillion pda over the years from the palm 1x to the newtons 900/2000/2100 psions etc etc so ive had a fare experience when stuff goes wrong, just this time i think emotion really come over me.
being so late at night at the time 11pmish on a sunday i wasent really in the clearest of minds.. i had to get as much water out of the device as soon as possible, so resting on the a/c vent on 24deg and gently warming it with a hair dryer where the only options i had.. then i started digging in the garage for my old techie kit at like 1am, when i found most of the tools i needed and even borrowed a few off a local off this board!!! as soon as i cracked it open i felt better it was clean water so most of the water stains where easy to remove.
but now it works and thats all i care about.. no visable damage at all, no dead pixels or keys only werid thing is everytime i sync it now the date/time changes to 2-may-2004 3am, but i can live with that.
the sequence of recovery can be explain thusly
retrive device
remove battery and back up battery if you can
try and expell as much water as possible
crack it open
Iso Alcohol everything ( i used isorub its an australian product, from supermarkets, for general household use )
let everything fully dry out before reassembly ( 2-3 days i covered my boards in an anti static cloth for a day and a bit )
carefully put everything back together the video cable cant be bent at a certain point so you only have like 1-2mm or wire to fish thru the connectors.. all should be well if not, im sorry get another device and use it as parts.

Where in Tesco would one find IsoAlcohol? I don't recall seeing it thus far, but I'd have thought WD40 was a pretty good water dispersal agent too?

To be honest I think a total strip down my be in order to totally get rid of all the moisture.

I'm not trying to be a downer, but here is the reality.
1) You probably shorted the phone out. It's dead
2) By some LUCKY chance you didn't short the phone out, let it dry for a LONG time with out supply any power to it. Assuming you can bring it back to live, the internals have already gotten wet. Water + Electronics = Corrosion. Your phone won't last long

I would suggest a full or as full as you can tear down and a flush with distilled water and then a very good drying.

I left mine out screen facing up in the pouring rain for 5 hours
was soaking but still working lol
the backlight wasnt happy though,
dried it out and took the battery out after playing with it wondering how it still worked.
all was well
occasionaly you get the white powedery corrosion on the various processor legs (makes contacts where you dont want them ) which most of the time cleaning them off with fix and issues .
Edit my wizard was playing some mp3s the otherday and fell of motorbike at 50 mph and hit the road , stopped picked it up it was still playing the same tune through the speakers ,
amazing build quality for a heavy device to survive that .

Just wondering... When using your phone in the rain is it dodgy? Like will it break the touch screen if it gets too wet? Should we all be buying gay covers?

If you plan on attempting to clean it, don't use distilled water!
The best thing to use would be pure rubbing alcohol.

Well ... disassembled and patted it dry. Left it out to dry for about 24 hours ... reassembled.
Viola!
Powers up and everything seems to working fine.

Well you are a downer man.
New phones now are hard to short like that, though water do soak into the boards, just hope it didnt soak and damage your screen. Just take apart and dry.

Today is the worst day of my life

I woke up this morning to find my 8525 sitting in my computer chair as usual. Only to reach over and grab it, and ....its sitting in three inches of water. I have no idea what happened, or how it got there. All i know is my phone wont turn on, and is totally dead. Is there ANYTHING that can be done to right this horrid tragedy? Any help would be a gift from god. Thanks

Let it dry out before trying to use it. Since it's wet, you have nothing to lose by taking it apart to facilitate this. You could dry it faster by using a hair dryer but NOT on the heated setting.

agreed; but let it dry for a day or two before you try, you should also put it somewhere that will provide additional moisture evaporation (gas oven with pilot lights or a furnace room, behind a PC fan or the like). i saved my old Sony S710a by letting it bake in my hot car for about 6 hours while i was at work. just make sure its totally dry before you try, and considering you already voided the warranty with the pool of water incident, you might as well take it apart if you can to make sure its completely dry.

Tried putting the battery back in after about a good 4-5 hours of being in the sun. All i get is a crackling noise when i try to place the battery to the metal conductors

Ewww.. I know it is stressful for you not to switch on the phone, but doing that will just make matter worst. Since you said that it wont turn on, I presume that you've tried it once (Strike 1), and you did it again 4-5 hours later (Strike 2), which usually others just leave it for at least 1 day (but probably the sun does help).
Can you identify what water is it? Can there be mineral within? Which may cause a short circuit somewhere in the phone. You'll need to open up the phone and clean it up somehow.. either DIY or get some phone shop people to do it. Your warranty is 'washed' anyway.

OK, this comes from my many decades in the electronics industry.
1. PULL the battery. Do not put it back in in few hours.
2. Where did the water come from? Was it really water or? You need to know this. It's real important because mostlikly the PCB is contaminated. Anything that got inside has most likely contaminated the board and will cause shorts, intermitent contacts and the like. Even rain or spring water, it's the minerals...
What you have to do most likely is disassemble the unit. Get a gallon of DISTILLED (not Spring) water. Distilled, also know as deionized is free of all minerals. You are going to have to carefully submerge the board without the LCD in the water and gently rub it with a very soft tooth brush while underwater. Next take it out and put in another bath of distilled water. Agitate it gently. This proces should remove any contamination as long as the offending liquid is not sticky or heavily acidic or base. In the case of the later 2, you are most likely screwed.
Ok, so now you have a wet board. Genly shake the excess water off of it. Turn your oven onto WARM. Nothing above 150 F. Let it warm up and then shut the oven off. Put the PCB in the middle of the oven directly on the rack, close the door and come back 8 to 10 hours later. If the board isn't dry, repeat the steps again.
If you are luck and didn't fry it from trying to power it up, it may work again.
I have saved lots of radio equipment from rain & saltwater submergence this way.

I used to have a motorola and dropped it into a bucket of water. Dried out in a few days and it was working fine.

my 8525 recently fell in the sink. as soon as i seen it in the sink i pulled the battery out. rigged the phone up on something in the floor so air could ventilate under and over, set the hair dryer on high (but without the heat) and 5 or so ventilation fans from a desktop pc wired to a 9v battery. let the hair dryer go for about 15 minutes but left the fans on over night. took the phone with me to school the next day and left it in the car during both of my classes. came out put the battery in and powered it up. works just fine now

ive heard the rice thing works, ive alway wanted to flush with alcohol, that would in theory dilute the water and the alcohol would dry out faster.

Ok so heres the deal. I put the battery in. Power up the phone, gets to the vp3g startup screen, then fades to white. Could someone point me in the direction of a tutorial that shows me how to disassemble a Hermes CORRECTLY.

It's drying out slowly. I had a Hermes that did the same thing - eventually getting to the "screen behavior" you describe. I never fully disassembled it. I just let it sit open, with the battery out, keyboard pulled out, and the back off. Eventually (after leaving overnight), it was fine. Worked normal ever since that with one exception.. I had forgotten to pull the SD card. The SD socket never worked again :-(
Moral of the story: don't forget to take out the SD card.

yeah i got lucky. when mine fell in the sink i had the SD card out and in the laptop doing hw. so i guess im really lucky that the sd socket still works

Not worried about the SD card as much... Anyway, Ive popped the back off of my 8525 after removing a couple screws. On the back of the circuit board there is white material that can be wiped off with a little rubbing alcohol and an ear swab. What is that crap? Ill go further in depth here soon once it fully drys. I sure hope I can get this thing running again, birthday is the 13th and would be a nice little gift to myself to get the phone working. Thanks for the help guys

If it fades to white, it is still wet.
You need to let it dry a lot longer before trying to use it.

Well, those are either stuff from the water or stuff from your phone that is washed and gathered to form some dangerous circuits (much like coffee water rings, that things tend to get to the edge of waters). These stuff may conduct electricity, hence making your phone goes nuts. Search and destroy all these 'crap' Good luck. Don't try the phone unnecessarily until you are sure that all 'crap's are gone. One of these 'crap' may potentially kill your phone (ok, it is usually not that serious, but just incase )

Sad story, I was lucky with similar story, but much cheaper. I left my Nokia BH-600 Blue Tooth Head set in my panties and give them to washing-mashine. 40 degrees program for 30 minutes ended by wringing on 800 turns/minute
When I found it in the pocket I just left it to wither up and it didn’t worked. So I tried to re-charge it and WOW it works and the battery has normal capacity.

Likely Death to my G1

today was a horrible day...
apparently leaving your g1 in your pants while they are in the wash doesnt work so well.
does not power on
anyone have any idea what can be done to bring it back or is it most likely fried
and if it is done then does anyone want to buy it as is?
I guess this is an excuse to get a g2
*UPDATE*
I guess no G2 for me just yet.
My phone works great now. Did not do anything special. Did disassemble the phone though so I can wipe down any residue i saw on main components such as the keyboard.
My advice to anyone that has this misfortune is not to rush things. I think i turned my phone on 2 days too early but I got lucky and it did not affect my phone. I figured this out because there was a lot of visible moisture in the screen when the backlight turned on. The keyboard was not functioning correctly either.
I did leave it in rice for about 36 hours but I do not really think that did much as far as the drying process goes. Best thing to do is go to a hardware store and pick up a torx driver set(mine was $4 at Home Depot and it was 36 piece set including torx philips hex slotted and pozi) open up the phone *be careful* of course and let it air dry for 3-4 days (not absolutely necessary to take apart the entire screen but if you feel comfortable go ahead). While it was open I wiped down the main board and the keyboard. I did not take apart the screen because I just did not want to take any other risks(mostly because i knew the screen worked) even though there was moisture, I knew it would eventually dry out. But the key to all of this was patience(I know its tough to go 3-4 days without your baby).

Most of the time, phones can live through the washer and live. You MUST take out the battery and do NOT attempt to turn it on for atleast 48 hours, as you will likely short out the phone. Put the phone in a big bag of rice to let it soak up the water, also use a blowdryer to help dry the phone out. However, your warranty is now void, and there likely will be some remnants of water within your screen.

Yep! worst thing you can do is turn that thing on (or try) before its dry.
my g1 hasnt had a bath but other phones have (none with touch screens) and i take as much apart as possible and leave it that way till the waters gone (then like 4 more days just to me sure )
artifical drying sources reccomended (dont get too hot!!!)

I have had it in rice for about 24 hours now and its sitting on top of my dvr because it gives off a little heat so it should help the process.
just remembered that i didnt remove the sd card...
i was thinking that since it was in the washer with detergent, shouldnt i have just removed the battery and try to clean it in some type of solution...
I have read about a alcohol solutions but kind of scared and i just noticed that there is condensation around the edges of the screen

I'd say take it apart, Blow dry what you can, leave the pieces in a warm area for a couple hours, and then try putting it back together and turning it on.

anybody know how sensitive the screen is because i want to try and blow some heat on it but not sure if it will damage it

good point but im on att network using the g1 unlocked...
plus i rather not cheat my way out of it because this is my own fault

good news and bad news...
first of all it powers on and boots fine. Secondly the screen seems to be working perfectly (touch and all)
bad news i might have turned it on too early because screen still had noticeable water spots all over it. The keyboard also just spews random letters and commands (ie one of the letters controls the volume)
other good news 1.5 has onscreen keyboard

ok well im taking it apart to clean it out and i see some residue but what should i use?

Aside from parts made of paper, parts with thin films (like the lcd), speakers, batteries, or fine parts that are difficult to dry, you can do a very neat job with 99% iso alcohol followed by deionized (aka distilled) water. This includes most (but not all) plastic casing, buttons, pcb boards, etc. Follow up with a hair blowdryer set on low heat (or if you have an electric heatgun, even better).
Get a semi-shallow dish, fill it with the solvent, submerge the part and scrub it lightly with a soft toothbrush. (probably don't scrub for polished surfaces like the exterior casing). Then directly rinse it under a stream of the deionized water. Finally, clean the dish out, fill it with the di water and scrub with the brush.

^ almost exactly what I did to recover a "dead" water soaked phone. Worked great, and learned a lot about how the phone is built

couldnt find 99% near by but got 91% which im assuming should work...
is it ok if i use bottled water(kirkland)?

I bought my 99% iso from Safeway. It comes in a 16oz container. Look for it in the medical supplies aisles. Don't use bottled spring/mineral water, as that contains... minerals. You need buy deionized (also referred to as distilled) water. Distilled water contains a significantly lower amount of mineral ion, which for the purpose of cleaning electronics would be considered contaminants.
Do the spots appear to be blotches of moisture? Perhaps there is fluid trapped between the various layers of the lcd.

it looks like its moisture because after leaving it off for about 5 or 6 more hours i saw a few spots fade a little bit.

You might want to search for the service manual for the G1. It details a complete teardown and rebuild of the dream hardware.

some sort of a miracle just occured because my phone is not acting up at all anymore and i didnt even clean it with the alcohol solution yet.
Just woke up in the morning and turned on the phone and worked perfectly, with absolutely no problem with the keyboard(except that i think i forgot a screw and a few keys are a little loose) everything works fine.
only problem is that the screen still has what looks like condensation.
but the blotches in the screen seem to be slowly fading. Gonna pop it open right now and leave it out overnight.

Damn, thats rough man. I dropped both my old phones in the toilet(damn you superbowl, damn you!!!)and both of them worked after taking them apart and drying them off but never really worked 100% the same...
Just a note too, those were non-touch screen phones.

Anyways, I figured I will share my story and update everyone on how things work out so perhaps if somebody else succumbs to such a tragedy they will have some info and perhaps some hope.
Nearly the instant I go in the hot tub I realized my phone was in my pocket. I don't think the water had even soaked entirely through my jeans before I jumped up and pulled it out. It was definitely wet though. I through it to my brother who caught it, in a matter of about 2 seconds the screen turned on, got all liney and scrambled and the phone shut off.
I tore the battery out, SIM, and sd and rushed it to a towel to dry it off. I shook it until I couldn't get anymore water to come out of the ports and stuck it into a bowl of rice.
Now I shall wait. I think tomorrow evening I am going to move it from the rice to behind my Xbox and leave it on overnight with the warm air from the fans blowing on it and then back into the rice until Tuesday evening when I might try it.
Does anybody have any ideas? Suggestions? Some encouraging words perhaps? Anything is appreciated.

Sounds like you did all you can do.did you seal the rice bag and vacuum out all the air

I only ever lost one phone to water damage. But that was because it got torrentially downpoured on for about 5 minutes.
It still mostly worked, but some keys would sometimes work and sometimes not, and the microphone died.
I was an idiot though and didnt dry it out immediately. I think you might just get out of this one unscathed.

I would wait about 4 days before you put the battery back in... an air conditioner would be better since it will blow really dry air on it.. if not just stick it someplace there is lots of air flow.
I have drop a few things in the water.. once a HTC magic.. LOL it was about 10days before it would work.. but it worked great after.. just some water spots on the inside of the screen but other then that it was good.

Just make sure its really bone dry before you turn it back on. A couple days in the rice should do the trick. After that just hope you dont get corrosion. At least it was fresh water.

I have been through many phones (cheap dumbphones) in the past and have went swimming with a cellphone 4 times in total, . . . and also lost one in a dumpster. 2ice with one phone. I have been able to recover them successfully every single time except one.
The second time I took one of my phones in the water it was in a hot tub and I was in there for about 5 mins before I realized it. It started vibrating violently in my pocket (i guess the water connected the circuit) so I took out the battery and left it to dry for about 4 days. It worked fine after that, but about a month later the screen stopped working.
I have found that as long as it isn't in the water too long it should work fine as long as you take out the battery right away and give it enough time to dry.
Since you're dealing with an expensive phone here, I would leave it for at least 5 or 5 days to dry just to be sure. Let me know how it goes!
P.S. I just bought a Galaxy S from Bell in Canada and it is my first smartphone. I hope I can keep it out of the water, and the dumpster!

I've been considering buying them, because I enjoy the flexibility of being able to jog regardless of weather, without worrying if it might rain. You can also buy special double seal plastic bags, but I wouldn't trust those.
They are expensive, but probably the biggest threat to my phone is getting it wet..

If it doesn't come back to life, make sure it is ABSOLUTELY dry inside (leave it on a radiator for a week, or similar) then send it to the Service Desk people.
I had a similar issue with an iPod (got caught in a downpour on my bike), and that was the collective wisdom frm the Internet. They exhanged it for me (apparently the iPod folks don't do repairs, but just look for obvious signs of abuse, like oxidation, water, impacts).
No idea how samsug work - but as long as it's dry and the accident is quite recent, hopefully there won't be any telltale signs inside.
For the next time - DON'T switch it on until the phone is absolutely dry inside. Whipping the battery out asap to avoid shortcircuits as well.

Well, my last phone, Samsung Omnia was actually ok with some water. It dropped in someones hottub once. It was dark there (wasnt my hottub lol) and couldnt find it. So after a minute or 5 i figured I'd call to see what would happen.
Screen turned on, and started vibrating so it was easy to find. Turned it off, took it home, opened her up, put it on the radiator and went to bed. Everything was fine the next day. Never had any problems with it after that.

Give it a few days... it will dry out and be as new.
My previous phone was a HTC Touch Diamond. I completely submerged it in water for about 5 seconds by accident and it experienced the same issues yours did. (Lines and the like).
The screen was toast (or so I thought), but the phone seemed to work via USB hook up to the computer.
So I went out and I bought a replacement phone after a couple of days. I then proceeded, late at night, to hook up my old phone to extract all information and transfer it over... while I was doing so, I was paying attention to my laptop screen, when I saw a bright light out of the corner of my eye. I looked down and my phone came completely back to life.
Moral of the story was I should have waited longer, but I did sell the newer phone for a $20 profit on kijiji.
Don't rush it like I did (unless there is warranty that covers this somehow)... it will come back.

So basically the story.. My girlfriend and I were bored just wandering around the house thinking of something to do. We went outside and she sat in the hammock which faces away from the hot tub. I thought it would be hilarious for her to turn around and I would just be fully clothed sitting in the hot tub with my slippers and all on.... I suppose it may be funny but before she even turned to see I was rushing to get out and throwing my phone at my brother telling him to get the battery out. Anyways, perhaps it was a bad idea xD and turned out to be not so funny for me. She laughed....
So what I did:
Took out the battery and dried the phone as much as I could with a towel and shaking the water out, I even sucked on the ports a bit in an attempt to get the way out haha.
Then I threw the phone into a container of brown rice which wasn't sealed, after about 3 hours of being in the container I decided to switch it to a sealed ziplock back which I squished all the air out of. For some reason this seemed more logical. I think I should have probably tried to blow dry the phone with a low heat setting first or perhaps used a vacuum to suck the water out. But I didn't.
After about 21 hours in the rice I took it out and blow dried it on the low heat setting (tested on my skin to make sure it wasn't too hot) and did that for about 20 minutes then put it into a home made wind tunnel which basically was done with a blow drier and a fan which forced the warm air into a small space that the phone was in. I left that for about 3 hours and then back into the rice for another night and day (maybe 18 hours or something, too lazy to count).
I haven't plugged it in yet and am just about to so I will stop typing now and test it.
SIM, SD card, Battery all in. Power button pressed.....
Screens on and looks great, sound works great and everything booted up just fine!
It seems as if everything is working fine, good signal to network, wifi works. It might even sound better than before jk haha. All the buttons are working and nothing on the touch screen seems to be off. No bubbles or problems visible underneath the screen. Camera works.
Everything works!!
So I hope this helps somebody out if it happens to them. Rice seems to do the trick. Don't rush it. I am so happy

Did you test your GPS? Sounds like a potential fix.

IMO two days is not enough time for a phone to dry out completely. I would at least leave it a week before start using it regularly.

I also think 2 days might have been a bit quick but then that air tunnel idea was clever and i think that will have helped a lot.
As for sending phones back under warranty, i doubt that would work because as far as i know when water dries it leaves a stain. I might be wrong on that though - mines stayed dry so far
