Galaxy, Meet Hot Tub - Galaxy S I9000 General

So I am a funny guy and because I am funny I went swimming in my hot tub fully clothed, forgetting that I usually keep my phone in my left front pocket...
I'll spare you the reasons behind this and the details but I couldn't find anything on these forums about a wet Galaxy. I suppose most of you are simply more cautious than I. Anyways, I figured I will share my story and update everyone on how things work out so perhaps if somebody else succumbs to such a tragedy they will have some info and perhaps some hope.
Nearly the instant I go in the hot tub I realized my phone was in my pocket. I don't think the water had even soaked entirely through my jeans before I jumped up and pulled it out. It was definitely wet though. I through it to my brother who caught it, in a matter of about 2 seconds the screen turned on, got all liney and scrambled and the phone shut off.
I tore the battery out, SIM, and sd and rushed it to a towel to dry it off. I shook it until I couldn't get anymore water to come out of the ports and stuck it into a bowl of rice.
Now I shall wait. I think tomorrow evening I am going to move it from the rice to behind my Xbox and leave it on overnight with the warm air from the fans blowing on it and then back into the rice until Tuesday evening when I might try it.
Does anybody have any ideas? Suggestions? Some encouraging words perhaps? Anything is appreciated.

Sounds like you did all you can do.did you seal the rice bag and vacuum out all the air

I only ever lost one phone to water damage. But that was because it got torrentially downpoured on for about 5 minutes.
It still mostly worked, but some keys would sometimes work and sometimes not, and the microphone died.
I was an idiot though and didnt dry it out immediately. I think you might just get out of this one unscathed.

I would wait about 4 days before you put the battery back in... an air conditioner would be better since it will blow really dry air on it.. if not just stick it someplace there is lots of air flow.
I have drop a few things in the water.. once a HTC magic.. LOL it was about 10days before it would work.. but it worked great after.. just some water spots on the inside of the screen but other then that it was good.

Just make sure its really bone dry before you turn it back on. A couple days in the rice should do the trick. After that just hope you dont get corrosion. At least it was fresh water.

I have been through many phones (cheap dumbphones) in the past and have went swimming with a cellphone 4 times in total, . . . and also lost one in a dumpster. 2ice with one phone. I have been able to recover them successfully every single time except one.
The second time I took one of my phones in the water it was in a hot tub and I was in there for about 5 mins before I realized it. It started vibrating violently in my pocket (i guess the water connected the circuit) so I took out the battery and left it to dry for about 4 days. It worked fine after that, but about a month later the screen stopped working.
I have found that as long as it isn't in the water too long it should work fine as long as you take out the battery right away and give it enough time to dry.
Since you're dealing with an expensive phone here, I would leave it for at least 5 or 5 days to dry just to be sure. Let me know how it goes!
P.S. I just bought a Galaxy S from Bell in Canada and it is my first smartphone. I hope I can keep it out of the water, and the dumpster!

I've been considering buying them, because I enjoy the flexibility of being able to jog regardless of weather, without worrying if it might rain. You can also buy special double seal plastic bags, but I wouldn't trust those.
They are expensive, but probably the biggest threat to my phone is getting it wet..

If it doesn't come back to life, make sure it is ABSOLUTELY dry inside (leave it on a radiator for a week, or similar) then send it to the Service Desk people.
I had a similar issue with an iPod (got caught in a downpour on my bike), and that was the collective wisdom frm the Internet. They exhanged it for me (apparently the iPod folks don't do repairs, but just look for obvious signs of abuse, like oxidation, water, impacts).
No idea how samsug work - but as long as it's dry and the accident is quite recent, hopefully there won't be any telltale signs inside.
For the next time - DON'T switch it on until the phone is absolutely dry inside. Whipping the battery out asap to avoid shortcircuits as well.
Must say, I'm curious as to the story behind this

Sooooo... how did you say this happened again?
I don't have any more advice then the what the guys already said, but i'm sending you a lot of encouraging words. Hope it works buddy.
Otherwise, just like Paul C said, if it won't work, dry it as much as you can and send it back, maybe it'll work

Same way for a phone http://www.wikihow.com/Save-a-Laptop-from-Liquid-Damage

Well, my last phone, Samsung Omnia was actually ok with some water. It dropped in someones hottub once. It was dark there (wasnt my hottub lol) and couldnt find it. So after a minute or 5 i figured I'd call to see what would happen.
Screen turned on, and started vibrating so it was easy to find. Turned it off, took it home, opened her up, put it on the radiator and went to bed. Everything was fine the next day. Never had any problems with it after that.

try this http://dvice.com/archives/2010/08/japanese-cellph.php

Give it a few days... it will dry out and be as new.
My previous phone was a HTC Touch Diamond. I completely submerged it in water for about 5 seconds by accident and it experienced the same issues yours did. (Lines and the like).
The screen was toast (or so I thought), but the phone seemed to work via USB hook up to the computer.
So I went out and I bought a replacement phone after a couple of days. I then proceeded, late at night, to hook up my old phone to extract all information and transfer it over... while I was doing so, I was paying attention to my laptop screen, when I saw a bright light out of the corner of my eye. I looked down and my phone came completely back to life.
Moral of the story was I should have waited longer, but I did sell the newer phone for a $20 profit on kijiji.
Don't rush it like I did (unless there is warranty that covers this somehow)... it will come back.

So basically the story.. My girlfriend and I were bored just wandering around the house thinking of something to do. We went outside and she sat in the hammock which faces away from the hot tub. I thought it would be hilarious for her to turn around and I would just be fully clothed sitting in the hot tub with my slippers and all on.... I suppose it may be funny but before she even turned to see I was rushing to get out and throwing my phone at my brother telling him to get the battery out. Anyways, perhaps it was a bad idea xD and turned out to be not so funny for me. She laughed....
So what I did:
Took out the battery and dried the phone as much as I could with a towel and shaking the water out, I even sucked on the ports a bit in an attempt to get the way out haha.
Then I threw the phone into a container of brown rice which wasn't sealed, after about 3 hours of being in the container I decided to switch it to a sealed ziplock back which I squished all the air out of. For some reason this seemed more logical. I think I should have probably tried to blow dry the phone with a low heat setting first or perhaps used a vacuum to suck the water out. But I didn't.
After about 21 hours in the rice I took it out and blow dried it on the low heat setting (tested on my skin to make sure it wasn't too hot) and did that for about 20 minutes then put it into a home made wind tunnel which basically was done with a blow drier and a fan which forced the warm air into a small space that the phone was in. I left that for about 3 hours and then back into the rice for another night and day (maybe 18 hours or something, too lazy to count).
I haven't plugged it in yet and am just about to so I will stop typing now and test it.
SIM, SD card, Battery all in. Power button pressed.....
Screens on and looks great, sound works great and everything booted up just fine!
It seems as if everything is working fine, good signal to network, wifi works. It might even sound better than before jk haha. All the buttons are working and nothing on the touch screen seems to be off. No bubbles or problems visible underneath the screen. Camera works.
Everything works!!
So I hope this helps somebody out if it happens to them. Rice seems to do the trick. Don't rush it. I am so happy

Did you test your GPS? Sounds like a potential fix.
In all seriousness I'm glad this story had a happy ending, good job taking your time with it too.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App

IMO two days is not enough time for a phone to dry out completely. I would at least leave it a week before start using it regularly.

Interesting story with a happy ending.......so far lol
I also think 2 days might have been a bit quick but then that air tunnel idea was clever and i think that will have helped a lot.
As for sending phones back under warranty, i doubt that would work because as far as i know when water dries it leaves a stain. I might be wrong on that though - mines stayed dry so far
Good Luck

Dropped my hermes in the toilet

Hi, dropped it in the toilet today.
Been drying it off for 7 hours in front of a heated fan. Tried to turn it on, the HTC screen comes up but it's really faint so I took the battery out straight away.
What are the chances of it working again?

So you took the battery out after the 7 hours? - Not good in such cases the first thing to do is always to take out the battery - However I had a similiar problem a while ago - but with a nokia phone - local electronics store took it to repair it for free but **** happens I sim unlocked it and they told me I had to pay 200 bucks for the repair - I googled a bit and found that you should take the whole device apart and try everything seperated then put every single part into ethanol (I think it was ethanol not shure :S) over night and in the morning let it dry - repeat up to 5 times - if no hardware was fried everything should work again - my phone worked again
No, I took the battery out after like 20 seconds.
I then took it apart and wiped it off and put it in front of a heated fan for about 7 hours!!!!
I dropped my 8125 in a cup of Vodka and Sprite and took the battery out right away. Let it dry out for 12 hours, turned it on and got a white screen. Took the battery out again and decided to order an 8525 to replace it thinking it was dead. Hours later, I tried to start the 8125 again and it magically started working. Guess it was a long hangover but just shows that given enough time, it might come back.
WELL... left it in the airing cupboard overnight.
It now turns on fine, the screen is working but I can still see a little bit of water but other than that it all works fine.
Going to leave it in front of the heater again today to hopefully clear the last of it up.

Hints and tips available.
The best way to recover a water damaged device is to get yourself a good denture brush and some denatured alcohol. Take the device apart down to its base components. The board, LCD board components for your soft keys ect. The biggest problem that I've experienced is that it sometimes fries out the flash for the camera which will stay on. Now with your denatured alcohol and your brush just gentle scrub the board components and the connections this will absorb the moisture upon evaporation. Also its always good to have a nice heat gun thats also a good way to reflow contact points on the board say you have connection issues with your mini USB port. I've been doing electronics repair on PDA and cell phone devices for sometime. So anyone who has questions feel free to ask. I hate hearing about people who dump 200 dollars for a repair that you can fix by spending 5 dollars.

+1, the best way to clean your water damaged device and have hope of it working again.
It may take a while to work properly again; my 8525 went into water not once but twice! The first time I thought it was dead--lights on but only white screen. Had instantly removed battery and opened it up as much as I good and took some canned air to it. Kept checking it over the next week without success so went and bought another.
Anyway, about 3 weeks after the dunking I put the battery back in and on a whim turned it on and surprise!, works fine. This became my back up phone that I later took to Africa with me where I proceeded to drop it in a toilet. Since the air temp was 130 degrees it didn't take long to dry out and it's still kicking!!! Important point is to immediately remove the battery, take the device apart as much as you can, dry completely over a few days then attempt to turn on.
Hope this helps,
Steve
Mine went into the toilet this morning. I have disassembled it according to the directions (http://inuchanbt.blog54.fc2.com/blog-entry-100.html) and put it all back together after cleaning surfaces and connectors with alcohol.
It powers up now, which is far better than it was doing just after I fished it out of the pot. USB connection works, speaker phone works, etc.
However, touch screen does not. If I hold the screen at a certain angle I can see a faint outline of where water has creeped into the screen about 1/2 of the way across. Touch screen worked decently on first power up but now it does not work at all. All buttons work okay.
I am going to disassemble again after work and inspect the screen more closely. Hopefully will save me from having to replace the machine!

I just reassembled after cleaning again and touchscreen works.

I managed to spill an entire beer on mine, turned it off and let it dry as above,. everything worked great but the scroll wheel started to get confused as to which way i was scrolling it, cleaned as above with alcohol and no problems. Actually I have found that the scrollwheel on my tytn gets hinky every couple of months or so and have taken to cleaning it regularly, onve youget over the inital fear of opening up your baby it's a breeze.
That reminds me of my old Siemens SX1 *chuckles* i went swimming in the sea and i forgot i had it in my pocket.. after 15min i suddenly felt it.. I dashed to the shore and pulled it out of my pocket.. And it was still running! While water was dripping out!
And to be honest, i never cleaned it afterwards. i just let it dry in its current state.. but hell that SX1 has endured some hazzards, and its still working ^^
Altho a bit oldfashioned now
Anyway this is pretty offtopic i know sorry bout that
Hmmm. The keyboard doesn't work. It worked yesterday. Neither does the screen rotate when I slide.
I guess it will have to come apart again.
The connector had popped loose, or maybe I didn't connect it at all yesterday.
Anyway, works great, and the water in the backlight is noticeably less. It is drying on its own.
Fully functional 8525!! YAY!!!!!

My Nexus survived after water damage !

I fell from jetski in freshwater pond, never happened before thats why i decided to take phone with me this 1 time....
Oh well, it works like new.....at least now it does. Air dried it with hair dryer and put it in air tight rice container overnight. Read that it good to put phone in alcohol right after damage, but i skipped this part.
I like to take my phone swimming.
That's nothing, my N1 is a useful cave diving tool.
Count your blessings one by one... it's an electronic device, no matter how awesome it is (and it is awesome) it still suffers pain like all other devices.

My phone, seriously, survived being dunked in the pool. But it dropped like an anchor to the bottom. At least the OP had it in his pocket. Did you at least get back on it before you took the battery out? I would have probably drowned in a panic not remembering to swim and trying to take the battery out while I was in the water. Thats good to hear

Of course you're supposed to let it COMPLETELY DRY. When is it dry? Are you taking it apart completely, every layer, board? I doubt it. Therefore you let it dry until you're sure it's dry, then let it dry longer.

Fun at work: I performed a cold environmental test on my Nexus One in our environmental test chamber.
Got down to ~15° F and shut itself down.
Continued to cool to 0°F then removed it for 1 hour to warm up in 98° F.
Phone booted up and shows no signs of any problems or the horrible experience I put it through.

i didn't articulate well what I meant. Which was is leaving it to air dry considered a sufficiently satisfactory manner of dealing with a phone that has been in water. i know method will always result in a phone working. but what i would like some comfort over is that by going the air drying route i am not doing something that is a bad decision.
edit: it is now currently in a tub of rice for the next 2 days. fingers crossed.

That's pretty lame, Hulk.
My new thing is to use our industrial heat treating vacuum furnaces to pump down to 12 microns of pressure... water boils off WAY before that. Its like taking it to outer space. Couple devices became iPoods after toilet drops... tear the back off and pull battery, pump em down, fill with nitrogen, and done. Takes like 20 minutes
So, if you can't live without your phone for more than drying time, take it to your local heat treater! haha
Dont know the specifics of amoled displays, but I figure if LCDs dont explode under low pressure... amoled is probably ok

Hahha That is the fun part of living in Canada, On winter I used to test lots of gadgets I had in the extreme cold.
The most extreme I did, and I almost died in the processes was -40C. iPod touch didn't last long, and my Laptop was enjoying the cold by even going faster! though the screen failed after a few minutes, now it has a smudge I can only see on dark screens.

wifes pixi rescued from bottom of a creek. Works 1/2 hr later ?

I know its a little out of place but I had know were else to go(I pretty much only chat in this forum) any way
we just got back from camping and Im still stumped.
My wife was shooting pictures over a bridge with her palm pixi. I was setting up camp about 200yds away and hear her scream OH !%^# OH my GOD! MY PHONE OH MY GOD MY PHONE AHGGGGGGG (she was really flipping out), thought one of the kids fell off the bridge. But anyway how is it possible for a phone to sit a foot under dirty water for at least 5 min and function a half hour later? After rescuing it face up from the creek after sitting in the water for at least 5 maybe 6 or 7 min. I walked over to my truck removed what I guess youd call it a cover( its really a rubber back full of holes). It was definetly wet. Pulled the batt put it on the dash for 20 min with heat on high. I told here it was a helpless cause but I had to do somthing for her. I put the batt in pushed the button and it worked.
Any reason why it shouldnt have worked? Or is this phone possessed.
Thanks
Possessed. For sure.
a long time ago when i had a verizon flip phone, i dropped it in the snow, where it stayed, until the snow melted and i could find it. when i finally did, it still functioned fine. i didnt dry it off, whatever water had gotten into it, evaporated naturally and it functioned fine. the battery probly died before the snow melted and water touched it.
i've also had the "should never happen but always seem to happen somehow" scenario of dropping the phone in the toilet (it was clean ), to which i took the battery out, and used a hair dryer on it, then let it air out for about a half hour, and it was also fine.
i think overall as long as you get the battery out quick enough and evaporate any water that is in it before you turn it on again, you should be fine. a lot of the components are buried behind other pieces of the device and never actually get hit by any water if you get to it quick enough, and taking the battery out eliminates the risk of the water shorting something out.. also a lot of circuit boards used in electronics today are non-conductive in relation to water, so as long as the water isnt on them long enough to wear away or erode anything, they can be dried off and used again.
I had an old nokia phone that me and my brother shared back before highschool. He left it in his pocket while we went out on the lake to wakeboard. After falling a few times and getting in/out of the water he realized it. So we took it apart as much as we could without a tool and put it up on the boat dashboard for couple hours. It worked like it had never been in water. I also dropped it in a puddle, toilet, and cup of water
Oh and we launched it off of the end of skateboard and it accidently landed on concrete, went into pieces, put it back together and it worked again.

Water Damaged N1

So this weekend the old Nexus took a dip-see with me in the lake. There is hope for those that drop their devices in water or liquids. You have to be on the ball and have a little bit of patience.
As SOON as I jumped in I realized that it was in my pocket, ripped it out, took out the battery and started drying it. I let it sit in a sealed tupperware container with rice for 2 days. Whether or not there's any truth to the rice myth, I was not willing to take any chances.
Wednesday I sat down and completely disassembled the phone. I purchased a contact and head cleaner (basically a solvent that quickly evaporates) and sprayed all the electrical contacts and components within the phone. Carefully reassembled the Nexus One, and she BOOTED!
So, there is hope for those water damaged devices. Act quickly, don't try to turn it on, and you may be good to go
Happy water damaged N1 owner,
Jim
P.S. ALL liquid damage indicators within my phone were set off. This really works.
O rly?

I was at the beach and water washed up onto my pocket with my Nexus One in it. It was pretty bad the first day, the screen kept flickering on and off and I put it in a tupperware with rice. Then when I took it out after a day, the WiFi wouldn't work, but then started working later on in the day. Now my speakers don't work for some reason. It would cut on and off while my ringtone goes off, but when I listen to music, it plays for a second and then pauses the song. My headphones still work fine with it though. Does anyone have any idea how I should go about fixing this? (sorry for invading this thread OP)

Why would you even be that close to water at all with your Nexus in your pocket? Did you think nothing was going to happen? Did you forget it was there? Were you saving someone o_0?
This has happened to me, but I thought you were not supposed to close the lid? Condensation has to get out someway besides rice absorbing it. Works for me

Yeah I would agree there was no need for assembly. Modern electronics are actually very very good when it comes to water. I have about 200 watercooled computers under my belt, and the inevitable leaks that come with them :') Even with deionised water [customer wanted, like an idiot], the worst that happens is it causes a surge, which the mobo force turns off the system. Even then there is NO damage, and just needs cleaning and drying to return it to normal.
It will be the same with the phone, if you can get it off/remove the power, there is abosolutely no reason [other than maybe screen condensing] there would be damage.
Me also, just got back from the dead with my Nexus.
Last weekend I went to a club that had a nice swimming pool and during the night, some idiots pushed me in the water when I was close to the pool. (no one saw who was the idiot).
I got out of the water, and took my phone out from my pocket: it rebooted itself, the screen was flickering and the phone was vibrating hard. Instantly I've removed the battery and put some toiled paper around it.
Went home, put it in the rice, uncovered. Next day, like an idiot, I've tried to boot the phone, which booted until a certain point, then started to flicker and it turned off by itself.
I thought it died completely, but still had a hope for it, and left it in the rice, this time covered for two more days. I've also put inside some little bags with silica (the ones you get in shoe boxes and electronics ones)
Then, yesterday, I've tried my luck and it booted with no problem, now happily working with no issue at all.
I was very close to order a new one
Love this phone!
I'll remember that. Just incase I want to go swimming with my n1.

Well, I'll be buying sunshine a 2nd time now!

So, about 2 weeks back I bought sunshine and I was loving the unlocked bootloader and a custom rom. I lost my job a couple days after so I went to my fiance's fathers house to help him with on some demolition and rebuilding of the house. He has a hot tub. Turns out, a few drinks later we decide after working for hours, let's hit the hot tub and grab a few more beers. So I put my turbo in the swim trunks pocket and totally forget it's there. We slam a shot then head outside while it's snowing because being in the hot tub when it's snowing is pretty cool. Then I just jump right in and the phone is still in my pocket. Not realizing it, we spend 45 minutes in the tub and when I get out I find the phone in my pocket. Phone is completely shot. I put it in oats for 3 days and tried to charge and power it on, needless to say, it still didn't come back on. Now we can all laugh all my idiotic story! :crying::crying::crying::crying::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
I don't mind rebuying it though, it's a useful and cool thing. I love to have full control of my phone.
Cheers guys!
Just for ***** and giggles you should try putting it in silica (you can buy bags of it in craft shops for drying flowers) because it actually attracts draws water to it. It may actually pull enough out to boot up the phone. (I would never trust it to work but would be neat to see if it could turn on)
Yeah I actually ended up taking the phone apart and checking out the internals and I ran it under a fan for another full day but it appears the strong chlorine from the tub actually corroded a bunch of resistors and all kinds of stuff. Rust everywhere. I'm decent at working on electronics and getting stuff to work but I'm pretty sure this thing is shot. Lol. Oh well, I did try.
Seeing as you're past the point of no return, you can try washing it with soapy water (I use dish soap), but be very gentle, as corroded components tend to come off easily. After it's dried, give it a short soak OUTDOORS in naptha (vm&p from hardware store), though you might not want to do certain components, such as the battery, screen, speakers, or delicate plastics, and rinse it with more naptha. Let it air dry for a few days, and try it out. Like said earlier, this would really just be for ****s and giggles, but I have had some success with this method.
Eh, it's too late now, i've sent it back for the insurance replacement. At least i know in confidence that they'll never find out its been unlocked because it'll never turn on again haha
My wife had a Galaxy S4 that spent at least 45 minutes in the bath tub. Pulled it out, let it dry in rice, then put a vacuum to all the ports/openings and I was able to revive it. That wasn't chlorine though, and who knows how long it actually lasted after that.
Sorry to hear that you lost your job, OP. I'm currently in the same boat, and it's tough going looking for anything new. Best of luck.

I dropped my Turbo in a lake once and was able to get it out after a while. I managed to fix it by taking it apart and gently scrubbing the corroded parts with ethyl alcohol. Granted, this was lake water without the chlorine but there were a lot of minerals.

Yeah I tried everything as well and my last resort was the insurance. I did have an s4 as well and another crazy story here, well maybe not that crazy but I was with my fiance at target buying some dog food and I left my s4 sticking halfway out of my pocket and I bent down to pick the 50lb bag up with my legs and snapped the phone in half nearly. Then I got the insurance replacement for that phone but I always test everything out before I send the old phone back. Turns out the s4 they sent me had an awful speaker and microphone so I took both phones apart and swapped the microphone and speaker and it worked perfectly for another 2 years.

Yeah it sucks. I got let go because they found out I was looking for another job. I started looking because I found that they threatened to fire 2 coworkers and myself only because they wanted us to do more(put a fire under our asses as our boss said) without getting the raises we deserved after getting certifications so I obviously was pissed and so the next day I went looking for jobs and called off whenever I had an interview because f them. I'll find something, it's just a matter of time.

Yeah I did try the alcohol scrub with a toothbrush after I let everything dry out, I even went over everything twice but in the turbo a lot of stuff is actually covered by little metal boxes so you can't directly access things. I ended up giving it a good alcohol bath a few times as well, never came back lol. I did let it charge for 8 hours, it just sat there and vibrated 1000 times before it stopped. There was one point when I could see the sd card for a tenth of second hooked up to the computer but ultimately no go.
Sorry you went in the hot tub with your dad. At least it wasn't the bath tub. I couldn't get drunk enough to jump in the hot tub with my dad and we drink together a lot. We got straight for the shower baby!!! Baby oil and the whole 9!!!

No that's perfectly normal. ^_^
Just had to do the same thing, except my Turbo face planted onto the floor of a parking garage. Glass shattered and LCD busted. But... digitizer still works and I was actually able to do a blind TWRP backup and get the files off. Yassssss. Doing the transfer and everything now
I've also done the been-in-a-hot-tub-for-45-minutes-before-I-realized-my-phone-was-in-my-pocket thing though lol. Too funny

Damn. Yeah, that happens. I always have a case on with screen protection but sometimes it still gets broken. Especially when I had my job using power tools and climbing in ceilings and attics and stuff all day I broke a few phones. Haha yeah, when you're in the moment you just don't think. Oh well lol
A lot of the water damage recovery has to do with the power state during contact. If you get it completely soaked while it's powered on, you'll make direct shorts that damage components beyond repair. If you're fortunate enough to catch it quickly and power it down, or it doesn't get fully submerged to the point of soaking internals, then there's a high success rate in recovering the data if not the device.
Sorry for all of your losses listed herein... the thought of destroying or losing my phone makes my stomach turn!
