Wait for european version,..or? - Nexus One General

I can get my Nexus One next week,.. which i am seriously considering..
My only concern with US version is the lack of multitouch in default browser, maps, picture gallery..
With european (vodafone) version,.. i would like to ask, what do you think, chances are it will be branded?
I've had HTC Magic before and i've rooted it and installed roms,.. but i don't like doing that very much I thought with nexus one, i won't have to
What would you suggest? Sorry for noob questions

Chances are that the UK version will be branded and locked to Vodafone are quite high.
As for multitouch, I expect it to appear in roms once the SDK is released. But I can live without it at the moment

Sorry to hijack the thread, but if you root the device, do you loose text messages etc?

I think you should get the US version and root, multitouch will be added soon through ROMs.
And Brent when you unlock the boot loader for the first time you lose everything.

lol who cares about loosing text messages, European version unless it has some hardware differences (e.g. 32a and 32b with htc magic) then couldn't care less - multitouch doesn't worry me at all since I already have it on my magic and it's not that big of a deal if i have it or not the novelty doesn't wow for long and its real uses don't extend much beyond browser photos (maps would be nice). Also Google tends to be more loyal to its American base so I'd expect more long term support such as an upgrade deal when the nexus two comes out or something

If the European version is completely compatible with the American ROMs, I'ld get the European version.

@t4tav: how do you like it so far? And what did you have prior nexus one?

I don't think it will be branded or locked as this model is not what google are going for. Even the phone sold on US T-Mobile contract are unlocked.

I thought the Sim free version is a 'world phone' (well in the place it works)
It's not American or European or Chinese or whatever, but a universal stock ROM?
Or if it isn't - what things on the phone will make it a US rom and how different will it be?
Usually when an operator takes it - they'll flash their softwar eovertop to brand it - so Vodafone may put in their Vodafone 260 shortcuts etc ....but usually they don't customise them a whole lot.

The Nexus One is being sold completely SIM unlocked on any carrier (would assume there will be no branding also), this is one of the big things about the Nexus One, it's being sold by Google directly and not the carriers. Watch the Engadget interview with Eric Tseng, give a great deal of incite into where Google are going.
http://www.engadget.com/video/page/3#player

There is never a branding on any N1,many sources say this.
The hardware of the EU and US Nexus are the same, so you can swwitch ROMs in between.
Multitouch will come to the US Version too, not by google but by the nice guys from cyanogen and modaco or someone else in this forum. In multitouch sensitive apps there are allready working Programs in the Market (Dolphin Browser,...)

I was watching that endadget interview and i like google's move..
It's just i'm still sceptical about vodafone, that's all
And there is also one huge factor called patience If i can install european rom later, why would i wait for european release?
Hope to see some more reviews of you european users.. I still have a few days to make up my mind.

If you want multi-touch in the browser then get the dolphin browser it has multi-touch

Should be interesting because I think that Vodafone UK dont lock their phones, or at least the 5 or 10 that ive had over the past 18months havent been locked.
The iPhone on Voda UK is probably locked down though. :S

Well, i guess since this news came out..:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/11/android-2-1-sdk-now-available-nexus-one-says-geez-finally/
..it shouldn't be too long, before we see some more "good stuff" coming to nexus one?

Anybody know what the point of devicewire.co.uk's purpose is in asking for interest in the N1 from UK customers?
http://www.devicewire.co.uk/google-nexus-one
If the EU phones will be the exact same version as the US one then why not just buy it from google? And, doesn't this go against google's distribution policy?

News on Bell HTC Vogue WM6.1/GPS/Rev-A Rom Update?

Does anyone know when there will be an update for Bell users? It seems they are lagging behind telus and sprint on the upgrades.....
Bell HTC Vogue WM6.1/GPS/Rev-A Rom
Same concern here, why Bell always need to be 1 year behind his competitors?
The official rom is 1.19.666.1 while others have 3.56.xxx
Yeah, Bell is always late . But for the price I pay for unlimited data. I don't really mind that much.
What HTC Technical Support Says:
I asked the HTC support team about the issue and that what they <strike>answer</strike>, copy pasted me (note the when and if):
"Hello,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the latest firmware for your Touch.
We understand that it is important you receive all the information to best utilize your device. Currently, our developers have to work with Bell to determine when and if a ROM upgrade will be available. Unfortunately, there is no estimated time for availability of any ROM update. Please check the HTC America website for any software updates that may be released, http://www.htc.com/us . Just click on the support link then choose your device.
I hope we have answered your question in detail. Feel free to contact us again if you have any further questions.
HTC Technical Support"
As I know Bell policy, I doubt we will ever see such upgrade.
This really sucks...i was looking forward to use the gps system and i don't want to void my warranty by using a different rom....it seems i will have to buy a separate gps receiver after all...

I dont see why everyone is concerned with an official update. Just unlcok and flash a custom rom, which will be 100x better anyways
I read on forums that once the radio is changed from 1 point something to 3 point something, it won't change back properly....since i have a 3 year warranty on the phone i dunno if they will fix something broken if they see it has a diff rom or if something from the cooked rom stays with the phone when i load the oem....
Any input?

Htc hero rom porting...

This is thread about porting the ORIGINAL ROM of HTC HERO that HTC announced in its event on 24th June...........
Any one who gets hold of the ROM please upload it here so that the devs can start porting ...
The ROM that original firmware has is slight different and it seemed to be much more complete and smoother....
THE ROM IS NOT YET THERE>>> THIS IS FOR DISCUSSION
If this a discussion thread then i will move it to general, thanks for the clarification
i cant wait until we get it. hopefully Haykuro shows up with it out of the blue and becomes our Hero.
How does everyone think the Sense UI Rom will run on our G1s? Do you think it will be as fast as it was in the Hero Demo or will it be slightly slower than that because the Dream has less ROM/RAM vs the Hero?
im sure that it will be faster than our current hero rom with a2sd. It might be a little slower but i dont think it should be that noticeable of a difference.
it should be able to run well...swapper will make up for the ram we dont have and a class 6 card will also help our cause.

"HTC's Sense UI not coming to any "Google" branded phones"
We've got some good and bad news... mostly bad, though. First, the good news: HTC is looking into finding a way to bring its new Sense UI -- the one featured prominently in the new Hero -- to its non-Google branded Android devices, such as Canadian carrier Roger Wireless' Magic. Unfortunately, and this is the bad news, even that's not a sure thing, and as you can probably guess from the wording, any phone that's got the "with Google" branding, like T-Mobile USA's G1 and myTouch 3G, won't be getting a chance at all due to the same licensing terms that prevented Microsoft Exchange clients on those same phones. Them's the breaks, folks, but we're sure some hacker with enough know-how will bypass the silly restrictions and do it anyway.

well until the Rogers phones get rooted, they better not leave out the Dream on Rogers or I'm going to be rather upset.
Of cousre I'll take root and a hacked ROM any day

heh this isn't much to worry about. as soon as someone gets hold of the phone, it's only a matter of doing a "adb pull /system system" and uploading it somewhere for us to be able to grab it and run with it

This is why I love xda
does anyone think that this could be done without root, similar to the manual update for T-Mobile 1.5? Maybe you could just edit the contents of T-Mobile 1.5 to add the UI changes?
I really doubt it, if it were possible I think we would've done that with some of the ROMs that have been released. You're on a developer website, you have to take some risks because this is "in development' not finished.
as I stated in another thread, HTC is not bringing sense to "with Google" branded phones, however, there are non google dreams out there, I think roger's is one of them. Once rogers gets rosie, it's gonna be an easy port to any dream rom.
Anyway, if somebody dumps a hero rom, there shouldn't be a reason why it wouldn't run on Dream. Hero is comparable in hardware (memory size and storage capacity) to the sapphire, so it'd only be a matter of making rosie run in less memory (192 vs 288) and fit in a smaller space (256 vs 512). The processors by Qualcomm on both devices are very similar, the hero's being a revision of dream's and sapphire's processors, and they both share the same arm11 core. Both processors are capable of running at 528mhz, so, really, there's very little difference between both devices. Again, a rogers dream port would be better, but Hero port will still work fine on dream

HTC Update in 10 Days

Vonn over at Android Community Forums just posted that they got an email from HTC Customer Care saying that there will be an update in the very near future.
Full post from Vonn:
Lots of people will probably be interested in this. It was mailed to me today from HTC Customer Care and comes from HTC Head Office.
"HTC is actively working on a software update that will make your experience on your Hero device better. A partial software update is ready in 10 days and a major release will be available in mid September containing local language support.. Please check our website from time to time and update your device when the software is available"
Customer Care don't know exactly what will be contained in the update though so keep an eye on the site.

Cool.
Lets hope the telco's have betas and are testing to allow for us branded Hero users to take advantage of this.
Normally branded phones have their own software, at least my htc diamond did. The website didn't accept my serial code, instead I had to go to the vodafone site to download the official vodafone rom.
Flashing it to a manufacturer rom (for example normal htc-rom) would screw up my warranty through vodafone (but I heard you would get warranty through htc)
So don't just flash, read before you do that

That's good advice. Be warned, people!
Assuming you still had access, you could just flash it back, no?
Excellent news
Makes a change for HTC normally they wait for the guys on this forum to release updates for them. They must be keen to make sure they get the android market share.
Brilliant!
Excellent!!!
Great!
Can someone enlighten me as to how these updates (especially the "major" update in September) work? Do we completely reflash the entire rom? Will this erase our settings, personal data such as smses and downloaded apps? And will it bring the phone back to being unrooted?
Thanks
It will almost certainly wipe your phone but thanks to the fact that so much is stored on Google's servers and the SD card, I didn't find wiping my Hero was actually too bad. Certainly I was up and running again with far less hassle than my Touch Pro...
It will be interesting to see what improvements HTC can put together and what user issues they resolve with it.
Well, I certainly hope this is the case but the guy I spoke with today at HTC customer service in Sweden gave me quite the opposite impression. He told me no major fw-updates were planned, only minor fixes but no dates were set.
Hopefully, he's not up to speed
he's not, my email from HTC came this evening saying 10 days first, September second, i asked because i hope firmware update will take care of the led issue
Good just in time for the US release. Can't wait to hear what they manage to do.

re the leds that will be interesting as my hero has been sent back to HTC for this very reason. When i spoke to customer support they said there was no record of the led issue being reported
Not having LED issues here so I hope the update addresses the UI lag with some performance enhancements.
To be honest, I'm hopeful but not optimistic. Heard all the 'new release in ten days' bollocks from HTC when I had the absolute disaster that was my Kaiser, and never got anything from them then. I hope they've changed...

Not necessarily. If you're moving from one major build to another, e.g. T-Mobile US to T-Mobile UK ROM, or T-Mobile to Rogers ROM, then yes, you will probably need to wipe. My experience with the 'official' ROMs is that they never require a wipe and are designed to be so.

Been away for a while, got a couple of questions?

Before I get abuse, I have tried the search function
Firstly has winmo7 been made available for the HD2? If so can you keep the Sense UI/manilla, or do you have to use the winmo UI?
I've just been on the HTC website and it seems that there are different ROM upgrades for different networks. I bought my phone sim free/unlocked and did a ROM upgrade in January. Are these operator specific ROMs all new ones, or just the operators catching up with the ROM I upgraded to in January?
Cheers
Winmo7 atm, seems to have been denied, as Winmo7 Phones can only have 3 hardware keys,
as for the operator specific roms, im not sure i keep up with Miri, tend to ignore HTC lol

I agree, hence me asking about being able to keep HTC sense/manilla. The reason I asked was that I am led to believe that winmo 7 is a great new OS and much better that 6.5. However, like you said it is fugly. If you could have the 7 OS, but with a nicer 'face', ie HTC sense then it might be a winning combo.

Omnia 7 coming to India?

This is after a lot of search and research that I am posting this thread.
I was thinking of buying the HD7..but honestly it was overly priced. Then I hit upon the Omnia 7.
Now I live in India, Mumbai.
Was thinking if its gonna ever make it here??
Any help is greatly appreciated.
This is slightly unrelated to your post. I bought my Omnia 7 in Switzerland.
I have been on holiday in India, using my Omnia 7 --- no problems. I have it linked to my live account, in which I think I have enabled the US locale.
No problems with any of the services. I am using BSNL's 3G (Chennai circle).
Please check out with people using WP7 in India, to make sure there are no silly limitations.
I love WP7 and Omnia7 is just phenomenal. I thought HD7 was a bit too big to handle conveniently as a 'phone'.
Besk,
Karthik

Hey Karthik,
Thanx for your reply...I am wondering where you got your Omnia 7 from? Its neither available in India NOR EVEN THE USA....this is pretty strange...And my uncle is coming down from the US..so was thinking of asking him to get it for me...but again, ITS not even available there...And yes, I also agree with you...the HD7 is too big for a regular use of phone...Omnia 7 is just perfect...
Thanx again.
Hi,
As I have mentioned in my post, I bought my Omnia7 in Switzerland. Omnia 7 was released only in the UK/Europe. The US equivalent is Focus.
Focus is pretty similar to Omnia, and you might seriously want to consider it. I think Omnia looks cooler, but Focus has an SD slot to make up for . Focus is also crazy light (ppl have said it feels like a fake phone even ).
But the issue with Focus is, you may not find an unlocked version.
If you don't see yourself playing too many games, and can compromise with a ~10% speed reduction, you might want to consider the trophy (which I think is coming to India?). I was sold on the trophy, till I read about some of the slow down issues... which I think may not have mattered in the end. Of course, Omnia has a G O R G E O U S screen!!
Bottomline, try to find someone in UK (I hope they get unlocked phones there, like in Europe)
