Hi,
I ordered my HD from handtec about three weeks ago to be delivered to the USA. The day before it was delivered a guy from Fed-Ex rang up and emailed a form that needed to be filled out and faxed back before they could release it from customs. did that and got it fine the next day with just a signature. Yesterday i got a bill from Fed-Ex for $20.71 for "Duties, Tax, Customs, Other Fees" Not a big deal but something to be aware of...did everybody else get this bill as well?
yup.. i got billed that but i didn't know it was from Fed Ex.. it got charged to my credit card and i thought it was just an international currency conversion fee or something..
no bills from FedEx or additional charges on my card (as of today)... could be that I was proactive and called FedEx to supply the single bit of info they had not yet requested: the FCC ID for the HD.
I did not paid anything extra, my HD was held in customs because of FCCID, but seller provided all information. Later I got an envelope from Fedex full of stuff regarded FCCID seller provided for them.
Has anyone managed to get away with UK Import tax on the Nexus One?
If you haven't got your tax bill, when did you order your phone?
I got mine on 13th...picked up from DHL depot myself with 3 identical white paper slips in pouch and haven't received any VAT bill yet. You?

Got mine four weeks after the phone was delivered.
Got mine on the 8th Feb. Not got tax yet.
Curious if DHL do open all packages or does some slip through customs.
Been reading threads on other boards about this and what appears to happen is Customs opened them, DHL pays the VAT so you can get the item, and then you are billed for the VAT on DHL's behalf and are required to pay it.
Consensus seems to show that it takes 3-4 weeks (maybe more) to get your VAT bill, but it will happen.
i got my nexus one 6 days after it came out. still no vat
now that ive said this though...mayb ill get a letter on monday lol. but for now, i have nearly doubled the '3-4weeks' timeline.

I thought most people were getting a separate invoice *after* delivery of the phone, but when I ordered I had tracked the parcel to East Midlands Airport, then wondered why it didn't go out on a van for delivery ... I found out when I received a phone call (from a company called Sutherlands rather than DHL themselves) asking for the VAT payment upfront, then they'd arrange delivery next day ... I paid but mentioned I was a bit annoyed they had done it that way round, they said collection was not possible.
I phoned DHL direct and asked if I could collect it, they said Sutherlands generally didn't send through payment confirmation for several hours and they wouldn't release it until they had, I gave them the payment reference for them to chase up.
As it happened I was travelling past East Midlands Airport anyway, so I popped in, explained and they they were fairly decent about it, checked the parcel number, and payment number and fetched my N1 from round the back.
£65.03 for an N1 + UK charger + desktop dock
I phoned DHL while my parcel was still over in the US and the customer service section already know that I would have to pay £60 VAT on it before it had even arrived in the UK. I can only assume then that google must make a declaration as to the value of the goods before they ship
Bought on 18th Feb, received a bill for £58 this morning.

ordered mine on 6th Jan, delivered on 8th Jan - still no vat bill. I was expecting one, I thought maybe month end or something, but I'm starting to think that dhl might have stuffed up - if it doesn't arrive in the next week or so, I might have got away with it.....................
I got the VAT invoice, didn't pay it. DHL called me, said id not paid it I said they didn't invoice me. Guy sent a copy to my email. I've still not paid it.
I got the phone on 10th Jan.

You aren't a hero you know. This is simply VAT. Every (non-basic) product sold in this country is subject to it and anything imported is also subject to it. By not paying you are evading tax. That, my friend, is a serious crime and you aren't gonna somehow convince them to just 'let you off'
Just pay it now and save yourself a lot of bother/further expense later.

also - they just treat vat invoices like any other - if it is not paid, then it goes to a debt recovery agent and you end up paying more
it's now been almost 3 months since the Nexus One was released now.
Buyers in the UK, did you get a VAT bill from DHL, or did you get away with it?
Got VAT bill 2/3 weeks after the phone.

There's no import duty on mobile phones. Just the 17.5% vat.
i have not seen one yet, and its been 3 months, surely i would have received one by now.

That's what the poll is about... if you got a VAT bill...
I got a VAT bill 4 weeks later for £61.48
Mine originally got charged to work. Still awaiting a personal invoice through (assuming it gets sorted properly) still expecting to pay one in the near future though.
So did mine, had to phone up and winge as they tried to charge me the commercial admin fee, fair play they sorted out a credit pretty quick.
business' dont pay vat on phones to avoid fraud. consumers who go over the personal import levy with customs and excise then have to pay vat as its coming from outsde europe.
if you didnt get one say nowt!!

I got one few weeks after purchase for around £60.
Nearly 2 months here and I got mine a few days ago. I'm moving out of this house in a couple weeks, any harm in not paying?
Apart from tax evasion i think you should be fine
The first bill DHL sent me they charged me 5% import duty on top of the VAT, so I called them up to have the bill corrected and send me a revised bill. That was a month ago. I have yet to receive my revised bill. So until my new updated bill arrives I ain't gonna pay DHL a single penny.
If you've had a bill and don't pay, DHL will just pass your details on to a recovery agency who will charge you more, take you to court and damage your credit rating. Not really worth it.
If you are still yet to get one and you had it dispatched to work there is a chance your company will have received the bill as DHL will send it to the "account holder" at that address if one is on file. Now your company may have kindly paid it for you, or the paperwork is moving around in circles as no one has any idea why a VAT bill would have been sent to them.
Got my tax bill 3 weeks after delivery for the N1, sent to work address.
About 2 weeks after delivery for desktop dock 1, sent to work address.
Still waiting on the one for desktop dock 2 (sent to home address, ordered at same time as 1).
You really don't want to try and avoid paying if billed - UK Customs and Excise have an awful long memory and a lot of power (rights of entry to property, opening mail to address, etc etc).
Been 3 months now and not received it yet.
We move on 16th April to anew address so I'm not sure how it will stand if it gets sent to the old address.

You could always inform DHL that you're moving.
I had to pay the VAT before they'd deliver my N1, then the confirmation was going to take so long it would take an extra day to deliver, so I went and collected it from DHL's depot at the airport.

A couple of years back I imported some stuff and DHL charged me VAT for it, which I forgot about. They send you a reminder bill (a red bill) a month later if you don't pay. So it's not like they don't give you a chance before passing it on to the debt/bailiff department.
my total came out to 244 without tax... i quickly when through it then noticed this in my paypal billed amount... shouldnt it be more around 300 plus tax? it didn't even charge me tax... should i do something about this like call dell? or just enjoy the fact that i paid less for it then im supposed to?
Whats you location? US or UK?
US and it didnt even charge me tax
Did you get a student discount?
Tax free weekend?
Does it have to do with tax free weekend? google it
no tax free weekend where i live was a week or so ago... maybe a glitch...
If you've paid less and the device gets delivered and is ok don't say anything to Dell or anyone else!
They wouldn't be chasing you if you'd paid them too much!
ull have to send it back ....
so i should just keep it as is and only do anything if dell contacts me? sounds good! i was initially kindof angry about havin to pay 300+ for it but now its only 30 or some odd dollars than the iphone, that i almost got out of annoyance waiting for dell to release in the US. pretty sweet!
so... tell us how you did it!
i went through hell last night trying to order one over the phone, ended up canceling the order cuz the rep had no clue what he was doing!
do you have an epp account?
hello,
I just received my streak last night. I like it so far....it big but not too big.
When I ordered it, I used my epp account (employee purchase program). I received 10% off of the 549 and then I renewed my contract so there was another 250 taken off.
That is a total of 305 so you would be right at the 244 number. I did pay tax since im in Texas but if you are not in a state Dell does business, you should not pay tax... I think.
So... if you work for a company with an EPP agreement figure out how to get access.
good luck!
Ahh ok, i just ordered mine total was $265.20
Was $244.99 after the 10% EPP discoutn + $20.21 TAX
in texas as well
now i have to wait for it to come
oh ya that makes sense i dont live in texas so no tax needed... just like ebay and other online sites. And my mothers company gets most of their computers and printers from dell i used the same computer that she uses to order(her internet is more secure goin through the companies servers/or something) could the dell site have recognized this? and given me an extra discount?

Yeah you got the EPP (10% off the full price, not the subsized price) so 549.99 - 54.99 = 495.00 then minus the 250 brings it to 245.00
I'm not a big fan of contracts so I tend to pay full price. I'm a retired Marine and was on aafes.com and found the Streak for 495.00 in stock, no tax and free shipping. I jumped right on it.
Hey all my second nexus 7 arrives today. I was lucky and snagged one at GameStop and now my extra one is coming in. Seeing that eBay charges a 10% final value fee usually plus other fees, does anyone have interest in purchasing a 16gb model or have suggestions on better places to try selling it other than eBay? I'd like to make a few extra bucks without risking losing money with fees and crap. Anyone have success on craigslist? Or should I just refuse delivery and return it?

Not to mention paypal will take their cut. I would probably try craig's list or just put it on the market here.

I'd refuse delivery and wait for the refund. I heard it'll take up to 2 wks. Wish I refused delivery and just gotten the 16gb instead but oh well. I'm happy with it.
Thanks...I'll check out the market here didn't realize we had one
