Hi all!
Firstly, I had a HTC Magic for about 5 months now and im getting bored..
This rooting business seems quite appealling but Im not really sure about a few things. I understand that you need to root your phone before doing anything, but by rooting my phone or even installing a ROM will I lose my numbers and/or apps that i've paid for? Does it literally wipe the whole phone?
Thanks.
Paid apps are taken care of by the market so no. Numbers (I am assuming you are meaning contacts) are synced with your Google account so no. Follow the directions here (assuming you want the CM mod) and you will be golden.

Cheers for the link mate! My head hurts I can't remember the last time I did that much reading! Everythings slowly starting to make sense.
And you can use Astro filemanager to make a backup of all you free marked apps to your SD
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-metago-astro-qzq.aspx
So root phone that takes five minutes. Then your phone will be double as fast .??????????? and great opportunities
Right! Now I'm completely baffled! Ive read quite a a lot of different web pages about rooting and flashing and installing ROMs and SPLs and Recovery's...etc etc! To be honest I'm completely confused!
Can somebody please show me, or send me a link to a page that shows me how to root in the simplest way possible. If it's only a 5 minute job it's probably not as difficult as I think..
I was in the same boat, ended up finding this http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-root-the-htc-magic-in-one-click/

Ive read this one before and I've heard the one-click process can be risky...
Have you done it? I'll probably give it a go tomorrow.
So, I've d/loaded 'cm-recovery-1.4.img' for the flashrec thing, but everytime I try to open it with Linda File Manager it just comes up with 'There is a problem parsing the package'. Any ideas?
It is very easy. you have downloaded FlashRec.apk and Install it on your phone.
And then download http://rapidshare.com/files/320335182/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2H.img
(if you have 32A). Open the FlashRec program and click on Backup Recovery Image and wait for it to finish.
Once done, click on the empty text box in the FlashRec program and type:
/ sdcard/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2H.img
Then click on the Flash Recovery Custom Image button and wait for it to finish.
Turn off the phone and turn it on into Recovery mode by holding down Home and Power to turn it on (keep holding until the recovery screen comes up you have root.

I don't have a file called flashrec.apk, I got a file called cm-recovery-1.4.img, which doesn't seem to be working. Do you have a link for flashrec? Also, I've got a 32B unfortunately but cheers for the link anyway! Ive managed to find 'recovery-RA-dream-v1.2.3' which should be fine. I'm pretty clear on what I need to do now, I just need to find Flashrec.apk lol!
here is the
http://zenthought.org/content/project/flashrec
you need this
http://rapidshare.com/files/320335181/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img (32B)
remember to write: / sdcard/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img
and not what it says on the unlockr.com
Thanks for the links ive got them on the sd card now..
Ive tried running the recovery program but whenever I hit 'Backup Recovery Image' it just says 'Backup FAILED: Could not run command.' I'm pretty sure I've done everything right.

Remember to write the correct name for the recovery version.
take the latest version:
http://rapidshare.com/files/320335181/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img
and then type
/ sdcard/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img
The name you enter must match the name of the recovery version
Yep i figured that. I still keep getting the same message!
'Backup FAILED: Could not run command.'
This is seriously frustrating lol!
Was the text box blank when you opened FlashRec?
It is possible to skip Backup Recovery Image is not so important.
can not remember quite where to press, the right or left of the text box
it stands on http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-root-the-htc-magic-in-one-click/
Comment Section below
yep the text box was empty when flashrec opens. are you sure its ok to skip this part? what exactly am i risking by not flashing?
Just to be clear, I run the flashrec installer and open it, then i type:
'/ sdcard/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img'
into the blank textbox and then I press 'Backup Recovery Image'. Thats when I get the message 'Backup failed'.

i tried the one-click root method to no avail, i havent tried the gold card method and i really dont want too. as soon as i install flashrek.apk and get to the recovery flasher screen, it only gives me two options: download recovery image, and backup recovery image. (SD is formatted and and already downloaded). after that the options dont change and stays with the two given options.
i really want to root my phone because i previously had a G1/Magic that i was able to root easily and had no problems with it, ive tried on several occasions and still have not been able to root it.
any helps or links will be helpful, and ive already tried searching on this site.
thanks.

best thing i can recommend is go to " the unlockr dot com" (no spaces) im new so cant put URL's in reply: search this video, "how to root the Mytouch 3g Or G1 in one click" that is the video i used to help me root my MyTouch 3G (32B).
well, that is the video and the site that i used. the problem is that after i selected "backup image" and typed in /sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.2.3.img there is no option to Flash, it just says restore backup image, and reboot into recovery mode.
i really need some help, i wish i stuck with my G1
also, when opening linda file manager, it doesnt show the flashrec as an android, just as a gear in front of a window. which isnt like any other video ive seen. and ive been through several different flashrecs and recovery images.
help!
first question i have, is what "firmware" do you have on your MyTouch, 1.5 or 1.6
or something else.
and is it the original MyTouch without the 3.5mm jack?
its the original release mytouch. it had 1.6 but i downgraded back to 1.5 easily. no headphone jack.
its 32B
thanks
instead of using the rec image from the unlockr, try using this one from these forums, its the most recent recovery img from amon RA and i'm currently using it. follow the steps under "via terminal"... might want to download "android terminal Emulator" from the market, its free and you can get the onscreen keyboard in the terminal by holding down the "Menu" button... http : // forum . xda - developers . com/showthread.php?t=530492 (no spaces)
this is the recovery img that i am using on minez
recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2G-blue.img
make sure you downlod the "G" not the "H"
also, i see every one sayin this, so i might aswell also, im only assisting in your quest to root your device, obviously if anything should go wrong and your device malfunctions or decides to call it quits, i cant be held responsible...
thanks for the info, ill try this out when i have some free time, and report on how it goes.
so will this root the device, or just flash the recovery image?
@Panda* - What sanman1185 had posted was the recovery image flasher. :]
Yep, you'll have to root it before using what he posted for you lol. Your method shouldve just worked with flashrec, weird. Next time, post as much details as you can. What is everything you see in fastboot? Or maybe someone who rooted a 32b could help you. I had a 32A on 1.5 which ran flashrec easily.
when put in fastboot the info given is:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32 B
HBOOT-1.33.0006
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.26I
when i had my G1 i used something similar to the gold card method, but it worked with the SanDisk card that im using with this phone as well, thats why i think its weird that its not working as a gold card with a mytouch.
Panda - mybad i knocked out, was up all night, what i'm doing right now is unrooting my phone and then going to make a step by step vid for ya on youtube to see if seeing is better than reading, lol... should have the vid up in about an hour or so and i will post the link in here.
alright, i cant for the life of me get this dam DIGI cam to work. Sorry, i'm gonna keep trying it, but see if this helps
i did successfully "Unroot" and then "Root" With Cyanogen Recovery and am running his latest ROM... the link for the flashrec.apk in the unlockr wont allow you to run the Cyanogen backup becuz it states it nolonger is applied to it... so here is the link to the flashrec.
http:// www.ryebrye. com/blog/2009/08/16/android-rooting-in-1-click-in-progress/
- no spaces, again in any of the links i post.
scroll down some and then you should see "Install the Apk" section,
the link for the download should end in "20090815.apk"
1. copy that to your pc and then the root of your sdcard
2. download a file manager (on your phone), (i.e. Astro or Linda)
3. make sure "unknown sources" is checked
-settings, applications, Unknow sources
4. click the flashrec file, and install, then open
5. do the BACKUP first, and then click "Flash Cyanogen 1.4"
6. you can now power off device, and turn back on into recovery
- Home + Menu Key
link to Cyanogen Donut ROM for MyTouch 3g, its real good, fast no lag that i can see.
its youtube vid and dude has all the info you need for downloads in the description.
alrite cool thanks so much, im gonna try this as soon as i get home!
awesome thanks man, it worked perfectly, i guess i just needed the right flashrec, because once i put it on my sd card, everything came together.
got a link to any good roms?
sweet, glad it worked for ya, i finally got the vid done and uploaded, so i guess i'll post it here anyway for reference purposes...also i show how you can use the latest Recovery from amon RA... but if your already rooted, you can download "better terminal emulator" it allows you to type numbers in the emulator... f.y.i. youtube is the ish for a ref on anything you need to do.
http:// www.youtube. com/watch?v=-D7conToMro
and im runnin Manup456 2.1eclair v1.5, its pretty stable and fast, one thing tho that i do is run "Task Panel" and place all the apps running under auto kill, and if the phone bogz down just press end to put it to sleep and it auto kills everything then bring it right back up... no spaces in the url, by the way, youtube is great for ppl's ratings and reviews, with links in the description...

I have successfully flashed my Sprint THC hero with no problems.
My issue though is flashing the phone to 2.1d. i can't for the life of me follow these directions and I am really stumped on the process of doing a nandroid and flashing the ROM.
I downloaded the nandroid from this site but not sure where I put the directory with the files at. Can anyone break this process down into "ejpyle terminology"?
My problems are:
- where to copy the nandroid directory
- where to put the 2.1d ROM
- do i need this busybox that everyone is talking about?
Successfully flashed what? And what method.
If you mean you successfully ROOTED your Phone then huzzah, that's step one complete.
Part of the rooting process should include putting a recovery image on the phone. If you did that correctly then do this, power off the phone.hold down the home button and power it back up. In a few seconds you should boot into a recovery menu with options to do a nandroid backup/restore turn on the usb connection to move files to the phone from your pc, and flashing a zip. If you don't have this recovery menu then you need to install it.
I don't think you have downloaded a Nandroid, I think you have downloaded an "update.zip" as we so affectionitly call them around here. This is a term used from the first set of recovery tools we had, where we had to rename update files update.zip to be loaded. Thankfully the recovery software has been updated to let us store and use multiple files.
So you probable have fresh-cdma-hero-2.0d.zip downloaded.
Plug your phone into USB and set it to Mount SD Card or what ever it says in 1.5
Copy this file to the root of the sdcard. don't put it in to any folders just F:\ or whatever the drive letter is.
THEN
Unmount the sdcard or turn off the disk drive mode (Cant remember what 1.5 calls it)
THEN
Power off the phone.
Power the phone back on whilst holding the home key. When you feel the vibration (let your girl hold it if she wants ROFL) let go and it will boot into recovery.
THEN
Go to Wipe...do Factory Reset
THEN
Wipe dalvik
THEN
Go back to Flash Update from SDcard
Select the update file above and hit the home key to flash it.
The phone SHOULD install and go back to the main screen of recovery.
THEN select
Reboot
THEN
Wait a hell of a long time 10+ minutes is NOT uncommon (it has to rebuild dalvik and other stuff)
THEN
When the phone boots hit Always Allow for the memory settings app.
THEN
Setup all your google info again.....
THEN
You should be good to go
AND DEN????????
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
EDIT:
I am SURE that I left a step out above, just go with the flow and wipe everything under the wipe menu. It's laid out so a monkey can do this stuff...hence the reason I am able to.

There is no best one. The 2.1 ROMS are all very stable. Just avoid the ones that say {DEV} in the thread title because they are under development and likely have lots of stuff broken in them.
Decide what you want for yourself, beauty, speed, both? A good hint is to look for the ROM threads that have the most pages attached to them these are the ROMS that have the most discussion and help within them.

Because you too seem like a decent person I will share this with you....
I followed a thread on here at the beginning of march to install a ROM and the directions (which I followed exact) bricked my phone. I spent hours reading up on this website to find out after the fact that the RUU might have a bug and some users will have issues. With that said, I decided to ask questions. This site has a lot of cleanup going on (no disrespect to anyone here as you are all VERY intelligent) and I do not think that someone as myself would be comfortable just "searching" for the answer without asking questions first with respect to the experience we have had in the past.

So you have gotten me curious now, where did you pick up that file at?
My only guess is that someone has posted a nandroid of their device and zipped it. Most of the Rom downloads are ROMNAME.zip....
You can always try to load it, it won't load if its not setup properly inside for a rom.
And about your going back to 1.5 to update to sprints 2.1:
IF YOU UPDATE TO SPRINTS OTA 2.1 UPDATE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ROOT AGAIN UNTIL SOMEONE FINDS ANOTHER EXPLOIT!!! WHICH COULD BE NEVER!!

Ok, so this leads me to another question. Where is the thread that links to this download?
The reason I am worried about this file now that I see it:
It's only 942kb - WAY to small for a rom or nandroid.

As the thread title states, I'm looking for info on the steps to root my stock MT4g, and install the new ROM that's floating around. I'm pretty technically capable, but the info I've found looks slightly dated. When I was active in the iPhone jailbreak scene, using old directions could brick a phone pretty easy, or prevent future jailbreaking. I haven't kept up with this scene enough to be able to know what's dated and what isn't.
This is my current plan, please correct it if I'm missing anything or have it wrong.
(based on wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=TMobile_myTouch_4G:_Full_Update_Guide)
I've got ADB going
I need a backup solution for app data right? What's my best option here?
Once backed up, I plan to install busybox, Superuser package & Temporary Root package via ADB
Use gfree to make that root permanent
Install ClockworkMod recovery
Reboot into recovery, and install faux123's ROM
Does that sound correct, and did I skip anything? Any input at all is welcome, I'd like to stand tall on the backs of giants.
There are two popular methods floating around
You can either use the Root.sh method [ Found Here ]
Or the ./gfree method [ Found here ]
Either method will work perfectly. I've used both and can say with confidence they work.
The Cyanogen method can be goofy at times. I've see alot of people say they cannot get it working for them. I'd rock one of the two above. You shouldn't have a problem either way.
Thanks a ton for the info, I'll go at it this evening. As far as backup process, I do the temporary root, use ASTRO to make a zip? Most of the data on my phone lives at google, but I'm wondering the best way to retain apps, or should I just make a list and reinstall from the store after flashing?

For backing up apps and data, use titanium backup. for backing up your whole phone, use the backup feature in clockworkmod recovery after you've flashed it via rom manager after permarooting.

The best way to back up your Data and Applications is like mentioned above is Titanium Backup. The free version will work well but i recommend the paid one.
as far as a snap shot of the entire ROM incase you want to go back to it. reboot into recovery > backup/restore > backup. And it will do the rest.
Well I made it halfway there, but didn't nail the whole thing. I've got permanent root access (yay) now, and was able to make backups via Titanium. I then rebooted the phone into "recovery" using the ROM Manager from Clockwork. First boot had a red exclamation mark, I unplugged the handset from the USB and tried a second time. After that, I was greeted with the Orange and black interface, and selected "restore to factory". I then started searching for the cache clearing, which changed verbage between 3.x and 4.x releases of Clockwork. After exploring the menus a little, the phone reboots itself from this screen. My blood-pressure goes up, and I worry my toy just became a b-word. Not all was lost though, and the phone happily booted into the stock t-mobile welcome wizard.
I still have superUser installed, and still have root (S=OFF I guess?). I install ROM Manager again, and do the "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" (which now shows both current and latest recovery as ClockworkMod 3.0.2.4). When I choose Reboot into Recovery however, it reboots back to the MyTouch 4G logo screen (non-animated one), and hangs. After some reading I tried to force recovery boot via ADB, which produced the same result as the soft reset from ROM Manager. After that I tried doing it the manual way with holding the volume button, which launched me into what I believe is a stock recovery console (white with colored options, uses vol +/- and power to navigate). Choosing "recovery" from that screen *also* produces the white logo screen hang.
So my question now is, in it's current state; how can I get to the Clockwork recovery again? From there I bet installing the image will be easy street, but I believe I'm stuck for now.
Side-note: the phone functions fine on regular boots and pure vanilla mode; I just don't want to stop here when I'm pretty close to my 2.3 goal
Well good news and bad news. I was able to get Clockwork going by reverting it to 3.0.0.5 and just using that version. Was able to install ROMs, tested a few. Phone started freezing after/during installing packages. Started the clear cache/install ROM process, ran into this:
Code:
Flashing Kernal ...
assert failed: write_raw_image("/tmp/boot.img","boot")
E:Error in /sdcard/download/virtuous_fusion-glacier-rom-v1.0.9.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14389074
Totally stuck at boot screen, but able to get into Clockwork. All ROM zips off the sdcard produce this or an invalid zip error.
Other guy smight tell you what a status 7 might be, but with the flurry of flashing youre doing, you may have gotten some corruption on your sd
try formatting your sd card in the pc, or use another one so you dont have to back everything up on this one. put one rom zip on the root and see if that helps
also, i would make super sure you wiped/factory resetted every possible data/cache in CWM before flashing the zip
lastly, i would md5 test the download to make sure it matches the web page. Plus, after it's transferred to the cleanly-formetted sd, check it again either thru adb, or do the trans on the pc using an sdcard reader and check it once it's on the sdcard, then pop it into back your phone.
good luck
Thanks a ton for the uber fast reply. When I format on the PC, what format do I use, or is there a specific tool to properly format it for the phone?
When I'm wiping /data it's taking forever and I get the following message back:
Code:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log/last_log
Don't have an adapter at the office today for the sdcard, but I guess I can just grab a new one at lunch? All it would need is a fresh format then the .zip of the ROM in question at the root?
Looks like your partitions are corrupted. Flash PD15IMG to restore the phone to stock, and progress from there.
When you format the SD card, just format it regularly in the PC.

So I use the same PD15IMG.zip i did to start, flash it using Clockwork, then start the root > rom process over? I think that it currently tells me it can't find that zip anymore on the white screen pre console, is that expected? I just xfer it to the sdcard prior to fixing?
Yes, that's the right procedure. Move it to the card and start from scratch. Beware not to use the newer Panache/MT4G Gingerbread RUU, otherwise you'll be left with no way to root, or at least harder way.
Ok, so I didn't have a PD15IMG.zip to begin with, I see this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059347
and that's proper that I'm flashing the radio itself for this process? Which of those images do I want to grab? I always like to double check when I read warnings that are pretty specific about bricking the device
No! You're flashing a stock recovery image called a pd15img.zip
The radio does not do a restore to stock, the reason you're confused is that in order to flash a radio for those who nmwish to do that, you rename it to the same name as the recovery zip, but it's really just a radio. It just happens to be the filename that the system looks for to restore. Look for the thread posted by either jjackson or football. That's the full image, just over 300 megabytes, or that neighborhood.

Jesus, glad I asked before getting in there.
So I was going to offer you a beer sometime, I think I owe you a few rounds at this point...
Edit: this one right http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=924923 ?
Yup. Read the whole thread. Also look for football,s thread. There are a couple of mentions of undoing gfree first then doing the pd15img. I think jjackson tries to automate those two steps, and football thread just gives you a january-dated pd15img. I can't remember if you rooted gfree or not. Read read read. This is an important step but hundreds have gone back to stock this way without a hitch. That is if you have a good emmc, you have a better chance of avoiding problems...

I rooted gfree originally, and think I may be in the bad place
Fail-PU errors running the update from pd15img. Do I have any options at this point? I bought the phone from Wirefly.com, and since I can't get a recovery image going, I may be fuct here on a return eh?

Good luck Lars. Let us know that they did and if you had to pay.
Hi i buy the san francisco smart phone 2 days ago, and i want to make it better.
Firs i want to delete some custom apps like guitar hero, etc, a friend of mine told me that i have to route my cell phone, i search about it but i'm afraid of losing warranty, second he told me that rout the phone only to remove some apps is stupid and i should update my room from 2.1 to 2.2.
Can i do this without have to rout my phone?
No you need to root to remove the apps or install a custom ROM that will overwrite the custom apps.
You should still be protected against hardware faults even with a custom ROM or with a rooted phone.
hi i followed this tutorial sanfranciscoandroid.co.**
and i already rooted my phone but when im doing this
Superuser will ask for permission. Tap OK.
Tap the Recovery tab.
Tap Install Recovery.
Tap /sdcard/download/clock.img
Tap OK.
Wait for the Installing box to disappear.
Done!
the app says current installed recovery unrecognised it's normal? or i did something wrong?
I resolve i update database and now it says currently installed Recovery ClockWorldMod Recovery v3.0.0.6 ,
what it means? what is clockWorldMod and what it does ? and what does mand5?
Should i install a custom room if yes how? and if i can restore to my default room if I don't like it? and how to make it safe..
Honestly, I wouldn't bother with any of that.
Download this: http://www.filesonic.com/file/1539940224/gsf-blade-b17-tpt.zip
To use it follow these instructions.
To install: Unzip the file to the root of your sdcard, it will create an 'image' folder. Check the integrity of the files using AFV (available from android market) to find the nandroid.md5 file in the image directory, then long press on it & verify nandroid backup. Turn off your phone, leave it for at least 30 seconds, then hold menu & volume + when you power it on. You should see some green text (may be just a blank screen) then it should reboot & you should see a big android while it is performing it's first boot (this will take a while). Once it has successfully started up don't forget to delete the image folder on your sd card, to prevent any accidents.

This will upgrade your phone to a 2.3 ROM, upgrade it to Gen 2 and remove the Orange apps in the process. This process is reversable if you really need to undo it.
You can find what Clockworkmod & MD5 are by Googling it.
hummm i see but i already have install ClockworkMod Recovery is that a problem?
Nope, should be fine.
nevermind about waranty,ZTE is a descent smartphone

Once fastboot is highlighted, press the power button once.
It will check for ESPRIMG.zip and should show a progress bar in the top right.
After waiting a while it will ask you if you want to update, press volume up.
When it is finished it will ask to reboot, press volume up to do so. (If phone says on Mytouch circle for too long just take out the battery and restart)
If you want to put CM7 on your phone do instructions below.
Installing CM7 with Google Apps

I pieced this together so I don't take full cred. I know this works because I did it to my phone as I typed it
If this works make sure to post it. Also remember to give thanks. This was not easy to figure out.
problem
what if it says cannot roll back bootloader while espring is updated it says bypassed
It bypasses normally
Why not use ClockWorkMod recovery as update.zip and use that to flash roms and things from there?
Just didn't wanna do it that way
thank you so much for posting this i have been trying to gain root ever since i got my phone which was last year thank you
I cant flash update.zip it keeps saying cant mount sd and when i reboot it says i dont have an sd card i need help im stuck with 2.1 and cant load a rom
not working
Didnt work for me.
superoneclick worked saying i had temporary adb root, then i would run mts rooter and it seems like that when the cmd prompt comes up that it doesnt work.
on the first part it said
"cd: can't cd to /sqlite_stmt_journals"
then after I turn wifi on and the cmd prompt goes again I get:
"./exploid not found" and " secretlol not found"
any help?
one small hiccup
Used these instructions to root a friend's phone last night. There was one deviation we had to deal with:
5. It will look for the ESPRIMG again, after its done you will see the menu. Highlight "Recovery" and press the power button

While we could see the menu the phone only gave us the choice to run update (YES) or reboot (NO). Recovery was inaccessible. We ran the update (with the bootloader bypassed) then when asked to reboot we chose (NO) and then could select RECOVERY and follow the steps above.
Yes, we did repeat the UPDATE.ZIP process but this time it did not skip Bootloader. Soon CM7 was up and running.
Hope this helps and thanks for the great instructions.
i need some help my says i dont have sd card when it boots up .Also it wont let me apply the update.zip .it says cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0
cant find /sdcard/update.zip
Ive already reloaded ESPRIMG aboput 15 times im stuck with a useless phone please help

Some sd cards work better than others. Sandisk with a little 4 work great. Try to reformat it with a pc and I think it needs to be Fat32

Your pc is not detecting your phone. Try installing HTC Sync from the Mytouch 3Gs support page. Also make sure to run it as an administrator while being logged in on a admin account
I actually rooted mine while placing the phone in SYNC Mode after removing the sync program and pressing back button on phone to have it stop looking for SYNC...Just remove SYNC program from the computer not the drivers for the phone to be recognized.

I downloaded the htc sync software from htc dot com /us/support/t-mobile-mytouch-3g-slide/downloads/ (xda's settings stop me from submitting a link as this is my first post), I then tried to rerun the SuperOneClick and it failed saying "ADB server is incorrect version" or something similar. I copied the ADB.exe from the HTC Sync app directory into the SuperOneClick, and wham bam it worked. Of course the MT3Rooter failed with the same error, so I repeated the copy and I had root.
Thanks for your help everyone, it is very appreciated by this sorta geek.
PS: As a software geek and a 42 year old jerk, it hurts my heart that XDA has to run such nasty anti-spam settings just to keep crap off this forum. Ends up penalizing the users with good intentions. I totally see why it has to be done, and I support the effort, just is sad that it has to be this way.
how do you achieve s-off though? does downgrading, also downgrade your bootloader?
the goldcard app is not working, the site is down to generate keys.
Insanityrains: I have two stupid questions. Is there something I'm missing here? You don't have consecutive numbers for your instructions. Should I follow them in the order you have posted or in the order of the numbers?
Dumb question 2: Where is the download link for the ESPRIMG.zip file?
Thanks for your instructions! I hope it works for me.
UPDATE
I followed the steps to the letter. It worked seamlessly. Thanks insanityrains for putting all this together and the developer who actually figured this out!! However, few things I had to learn by doing it over and over again:
The first part worked awesome! (i.e. rooting and installing 2.1). It will keep saying there were errors and stuff but keep doing what insanityrains says to do.
The second part (installing CM7 with google apps was the hurdle for me): Follow his numbering in post #1 (once again, I'm refering to the second part) to understand what I'm saying below.
Before you begin, you don't need the ESPRIMG file anymore once you have rooted and installed 2.1 (the first part). So delete that file from the root of your SD card. By doing this, you can skip the annoying wait as it tries to reinstall 2.1 on your phone. Now for the two mistakes I did.
1. The first step was a silly mistake, but very much possible for someone to commit. Just rename the file "update" and dont add ".zip" like I did. Everytime I try installing the ROM it kept saying "cannot locate update.zip". I was scratching my head for a few times before I realized the mistake
2. Step #5. It will search for the ESPRIMG file and it is not going to find that. Select "recovery" then
For noobs, dont freak out while doing it. It was scary for me to root the phone. But once I did it fine, it was fun!
so in order to install roms you have to rename them to update zips?
anybody even here anymore?
theres too many outdated rooting guides on here. i already know i cannot achieve s-off now that we accepted the OTA. i already tried to root and it went fine but the clockwork recovery will not work. also when i boot into the 2.1 rom that i downgraded to i see there is no superuser app but it appears i am rooted because most root apps work minus wireless tether. i just want root and to run a semi stock non cm7 type rooted rom. is this possible with s-on or not?
if so can someone point me in the right direction please?
Worked!!!
Thanks insanityrains. Followed the steps and it worked. I would echo comments re: Menu choice for "Recovery" (see updates with fezmonger and ganjagarn).
Again - thanks!

I thought someone on here said that you could use clockwork mod but you probably have to put it in, i can't help since I rooted my phone with the original method that was much easier.
Have you tried installing rom manager and letting it flash clockworkmod recovery?
