Hi guys
Hoping someone would be kind enough to take the time out to answer some questions I have regarding my HD2 on T-Mobile UK and how I go about modifying it etc
Please bare with me....this is the first smartphone ive ever had and am totally new to all of this! :S
1) Does the fact that its locked to T-Mobile (and has some form of their own software on it) mean I am unable to make use of the many updates or software tweaks that appear on this site?
2) I see people talking about Manilla...is this the software HTC place on top on WM6.5?
3) I see a lot of people talking about flashing their ROMs....what does this actually mean? Is it possible for me to get rid of all T-mobile crap on my phone and be able to apply updates, fixes etc whenever I want?
4) I know of some people who have Jailbreak their iPhone allowing them to run loadsa different software on it etc....is something similar possible on the HD2?
5) Basically it all comes down to the fact that I dont like the basic taskbar look on my phone (really want a colourfull taskbar and some form of % battery indicator) and want to make it look a bit more modern/exciting....and Ive seen loadsa uploads on this site about other users homescreens etc and want to know how i go about doing that? Im not sure if having a T-Mobile HD2 will stop me from modifying it in that way?
Would really appreciate any help/advice anyone is willing to give.....the site seems very oriented to people who know what they're doing lol and im struggling to find a section for novice users like myself! I really like that idea of having a phone I can customise whenever I like.....just not sure at all of how to start going about it......
Cheers!!!

The fact that it's locked to T-Mobile doesn't affect the majority of software on here. Sometimes, there'll be discrepancies between what's expected on your phone, and what's actually on your phone. This will be rare, and usually resolved on here anyway.

Yes - Manila is the Sense UI.

Flashing the ROM changes the core of the phone. It's often done to do exactly what you said - to get rid of the software that's there by default, but you don't want it. Another more common reason for ROM flashing, is ROM updates that include software fixes (as just happened with 1.48), or windows updates.
4) I know of some people who have Jailbreak their iPhone allowing them to run loadsa different software on it etc....is something similar possible on the HD2?

You don't need to "jailbreak" windows mobile. Question 3 covers this really.

Having a T-Mobile phone won't stop you changing that at all. Just get used to these forums and searching them and you'll find most things you need. There's certainly taskbars on here. You're better off looking in either the root Leo forum (one step above this forum), or the themes and apps one. Also, the Sense UI has a lot of mods in other forums. The Blackstone, for example, had the Sense UI available in a ROM way before the HD2 was released, so that's also a good source of information.
Just keep reading and you'll be fine. We were all new here once
Have fun!
Thanks very much!! appreciate it!

just wondering why I wouldnt want to apply ROM updates and windows updates? would it not be better to do this than wait for official updates from T-Mobile that will prob take forever to emerge?
I've seen on some forums that there is already an official (yet not appearing on the HTC site) HD2 ROM upgrade....but are you saying you advise against this? Or are u saying I dont want to change the core of the phone....but applying updates etc is still possible?
Sorry, excuse my ignorance!
Cheers
I don't understand why you think I'm advising against ROM updates, but I'm not
Basically, it's up to you to weigh up whether or not you want to do a ROM update by looking at what's new and what's removed (if anything).
As far as waiting for T-Mobile to release their own version of the ROM.... yeah, you're right. I wouldn't bother.
I've just updated my HD2 with the 1.48 release, and it's a LOT faster. It's still new though, and a couple of issues have already been found. It's always "at your own risk" whenever you flash the ROM or install mods.
can i ask you what come in the box with tmobile handset, carry pouch? micro sd? an such. and did you get it from tmobile themselves or a phone outlet like carphonewarehouse, thanks in advance

hi....sure! no probs...
i got the handset (obviously lol) charger and micro usb lead (which is quite short and frustrating actually) also got a 2gb micro sd card! There was no pouch - although as far as I am aware HTC supply a pouch...which t-mobile (and all other networks as far as im aware) remove....to force u to buy one! So i bought the official HTC leather one online for £10 - which is quite nice!
I just walked into a t-mobile store in glasgow and asked for the phone...and they had it! i had been arguing all week on the phone with t-mobile upgrades and retentions.....they wanted to charge me £380 upgrade charge as i have a 50% line reduction.......but when i walked into the store they done it for me for £50!!! and kept my discount!!!! so now i get 1000mins, unlimited txts and internet for £20 a month! if ur looking for the phone and dont get quoted a good deal keep shopping....there's always someone willing to do a good deal!
happy times all round!

Sorry - you're absolutely right. You can't upgrade with that ROM. The experts on here are working on something called "Hard SPL" which basically allows you to flash any old ROM you want, regardless of your ROM version at the time.
The ROM that's bouncing round at the moment is an official HTC one, and can only be used on phones that aren't locked to providers.
Since it's a new phone, I'd recommend getting used to it and the available mods on here. You don't need to be able to flash the ROM to install most of the mods, so you can still tweak your phone like mad!

Ok great - yeah good idea! Ive not used it enough to warrant any need to upgrade the ROM and im pretty happy with its speed etc at the moment....prob because i aint got any apps on it apart from a YouTube one (since the lovely people at T-Mobile remove the YouTube app that comes with the phone!)
I'll have a play around with some of the mods on the site and try get it looking much sweeter!lol
Thanks for all your help mate......very much appreciated!!

hi thanks for quick reply
am glad you get micro sd, they could of threw the pouch in too LOL, oh well suppose its not that expensive. (know what you mean bout charger cable, same with diamond2 lol) i`m with orange at the mo there not releasing the phone on there network at all i dont think, got my diamond2 from carphone warehouse 10 months ago. its been put in for repair 2 times already due to touch screen failure, last time i put it in it got sent to htc who declared the warrenty void because of certain applications on the phone and have demanded £70 to fix even though i pay insurance every month. decided am not paying gonna cancel direct debit as it was nothing to do with software why i put it in, in the 1st place, think its ridiculous! i`d flashed a cooked rom on my phone and unblocked it with hard spl, i reflashed original htc rom before putting it in the shop but forgot to reblock my phone again, thats what they mean by CERTAIN APPLICATIONS. so beware if flashing your device with non htc rom and you have to claim on insurance for anything, you have to reflash everything back to original htc factory software/roms. to be honest hard spl(unblocking programme to flash any rom) is not out there yet for hd2, i dont think. but just a little tip for you..
by the way lol, i cant seem to get my hands on a hd2 anywhere, there like rocking horse sh#t!! lol am getting really bored watching videos about the device on pocketnow.com now tho Grrrrrrrrrrrrr lol i NEED one soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
just had an email from tmobile, apparently its on its way!!!!!!!!! yaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Erm you can flash the newly "released" Official HTC WWE ROM using the goldcard method. I did so on my T-Mobile HD2. The benefit of doing so is to regain the applications T-Mobile removed like You-Tube, CoPilot trial and Jetcet print. Also you get the advantage of being able to flash future patches directly from HTC, instead of waiting for T-mobile to get their hands on them and break it.

Hey buddy, did you manage to flash your rom then?
Like you I'm very new to this scene (coming from an iphone) so just wanted to know if you had successfully flashed your rom. Which rom did you use because I can see a lot of different versions of this 1.48 and don't know which one to use.
Surely if you flash your rom and it shows the youtube app as well as copilot, tmobile will void your warranty wont they???

Hey...i havent given it a go yet! as im new to this i decided to just play around with some little tweaks....like changing my taskbar and modifying some other options...like removing the "scroll down for more options" button during a call so the options are always present..........before i attempted anything big like flashing my ROM! lol
not sure regarding the warranty issue....id think so....tho if i had to send it in for repair (touch wood i wont) then id just restore it back to its original version 1st....

perhaps if yours is branded tmobile you could do so, and post the changelog here ?
there must be some change or why would they post it dated 15/03/10 ???

there is no changelog from htc's site. it's just a small "updated" t-mo uk ROM, still based on the very first 1.43 ROMs. i wont call it an update at all. FYI, this so called update has been made available in xda for a long time now. i've downloaded it and compared the Hash, and they are 100% identical.
omg!
if this is the update i've waited 3 months for then heads are gonna roll!
is it actually the exact same rom as before?
what the hell was the point in it?

It's not even an update. Its the exact same version number that I have on my original ROM T-Mobile HD2 - ROM Version:1.43.110.2.
And yes, I still have my original ROM. It works okay for what I do, and want to stick with official ROMs if possible. Maybe in the future if T-Mobile don't give a real update, or I hit serious issues, but for now I'd like to keep my warranty intact. I'm aware I can re-flash it easily back to the original ROM (even more so now that ROM is officially available to download) - however my concern is over times when I get a fault which means I cannot re-flash it.
i'm on the original t-mobile rom and find it suitable. the only real change ive made is to revert back to the windows messaging set up, not htc messages.
how many people on the original rom have had problems with HTC messaging?
The disclaimer says:
* This is a generic software update. Any additional software or settings provided by your mobile operator or company will be lost. If you require this customization, please contact your supplier first before upgrading.
This may 'unlock' t-mobile from their current position and allow them the HTC rom upgrade path.
Has anyone tried this?

Interesting point, however I suspect it's a standard disclaimer they put onto their ROM downloads. Would be interesting though for someone to confirm?
Well, someone try and download it using their S/N and try flashing. Worst that happens is it says 'Incorrect Vendor ID'

Goldcard here we come... Interesting that on t-mo's own forum thread
they haven't actually announced the availability of this yet (even though they must be able to see their own customers fuming away...)

I don't even want to think what the reaction on there is going to be once they actually announce it.
Ah, no, they'll mark it as solved, and no-one will be able to post! Good stuff, eh?
I tried it just incase it was generic but that was a a massive waste of time, as far as I can see this rom is identical to the factory version.

Hey guys in my earlier thread some ppl told me that i could update from asian firmware to european firmware. I would like to knw if there would be any problems by doing that, and would like to know ur experiece after flashing.. Thanx for ur replies. I don mind waiting an extra month for asian firmware release if u feel flashing can be problematic, if not i'll b happy to flash.
Ps: I knw a thread like this is available but there are no conclusive answers there. Thanx.
I like to know too. I hope no issue here other than losing the Asian keyboards. I assume one could still get a third party keyboard for say, chinese characters input.
Ya i recieved a reply in hardware zone forum, ppl have upgraded their firmwares from dd or dx to xx, xw (european). No problems were found, infact performance increased a little bit. One of the guys told me not to update cause firmwares released in europe tend to be buggy like beta versions, only final versions are released in asia and other places thats why updates are few. So if i were u i'd wait for firmware to release in my region.. Wat's u take on this? Do u still wanna flash ur phone or do u wanna wait a month extra......
I personally haven't had any issues with the euro fw to speak of. Like doomsdaycs mentioned I definitely experienced performance increase and even more once i installed the modaco rom. I ran the latest JG3 for a few days and it was great then i wanted the modaco rom so I reflashed with JG1 and it's still had no problems. Hope that helps...

That's utter rubbish.
Went from APAC to Euro firmwares, and never looked back.
Let me ask you guys who have gone over to the European firmware a few questions:
1) Has it fixed the 3G/wifi connection problem? (I hope you do not dispute that there is problem )
2) Has the lags/pause gone away? Or just minimized?
3) Has your GPS started to work accurately yet?
4) Does your email still takes ages to load? Or just become less slow?
5) Does the music playing still pause/freeze once in a while?
6) Anyone still able to install stuffs like Chinese keyboards from the Android market place after adopting the Europe firmware?
7) Do you have problem with the market place like what these people say?

Thanks for sharing.
Let me ask you guys who have gone over to the European firmware a few questions:
1) Has it fixed the 3G/wifi connection problem? (I hope you do not dispute that there is problem )
Answer: You need to create a new APN in order to use the 3G network. As for WIFI.. I am able to connect to any WIFI as long as I have the password.
2) Has the lags/pause gone away? Or just minimized?
Answer: Kinda but you will still experience it even with the JG5 firmware.. rumor has it that samsung will release an official fix for this on the end of july but there is no official word from samsung.. all we can do is cross our fingers and hope or best alternative.. use modaco's fix.
3) Has your GPS started to work accurately yet?
Answer: Yup, compared to the stock firmware, it is able to identify my location within a 5 meter radius.
** upgrade to the latest google maps version.
4) Does your email still takes ages to load? Or just become less slow?
Answer: Google.. first time setup.. yes. But now, depending on your location and signal strength.. takes about 8 - 15 seconds.. longer with 2 bars on my phone.. about 30 seconds or so. [GMAIL]
5) Does the music playing still pause/freeze once in a while?
Answer: When I am playing Let's Golf with very low volume then listening to music using the default player at level 6 - 7 volume. I do experience it sometime..
6) Anyone still able to install stuffs like Chinese keyboards from the Android market place after adopting the Europe firmware?
Answer: I am able to install Google Pinyin.. the qwerty keyboard still shows ABC but when you press each letter.. it will show the chinese character equivalent.
7) Do you have problem with the market place like what these people say?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7232231#post7232231
Answer: Weird case, never experienced that issue on my SGS after doing 3 firmware upgrades.
And no, I haven't rooted my phone yet.. hoping to hear from samsung by the month's end to know if they finally release a firmware fix for the memory transfer issue [NAND].

I second that.
The ASIAN version to be honest.. is full of crap from the TELCO's which renders the phone perform slower.. and I'd like to add that, my phone starts and loads faster now without the singtel crap.
Thank you M3keni. I'm glad it looks so positive.

You are welcome bro.
Disclaimer though.. other users may have a different take on my experience with my SGS.. hehehe.
..seriously, samsung should fix the NAND issue with an update firmware soon.
..but we have hardworking developers to go to for MODS.. iLike!
Before you decide and buy the SGS, visit your nearest telco showroom to try and feel the phone. Will help in your decision.
Have a good weekend!
Thanx for the info i'll be flashing madoco rom too.. cheers..
I'm waiting for the Froyo that's supposedly 3 times faster than iPhone 3GS. As it is now, it is a lot slower than even iPhone 3G. The black screen and long pauses is beginning to get to me.
I'm hesitant to root now as I'm uncertain about the hardware aspect of GPS, and my fear that the process might not be fully reversible, hence voiding the warranty potentially.
i have a question that how to upgrade the firmware from Asian to EUR use kies without root??????
i want to change that but have no idea, thx
yes please, even I need to know how to flash my Singtel FW to the eu version like the friends above mentioned. Mainly I want to do this without rooting...!!
And once after upgrading, will it allow me to upgrade to froyo when it is officially released!!! via Kies or OTA.

Can you suggest the fw number of the official euro firmware that you are using now so I can install as well.
No problem at all dude.
Flashed from DDJF3 to XWJG1 (Indian to some European country)... JF3 had major issues... JG1 is good... not great though. Most of the problems of the stock firmware were resolved by Modaco's Custom ROM... try it out!
You guys should give the new firmware JM1 or JM2 a twirl. The difference is night and day...no joke..and that's before root and any modifications.
@netboyhk I initially used this as my starting point http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpWcM44On88
Note that in the video he says it HAS to be on a specific com port....ignore that part. It's all relative to how many usb ports u have and how many devices plugged in etc etc. From my experiences it's REALLY hard to brick this phone but your mileage may vary
I think you mean JM1 and JM2 - unless Samsung's moving faster on firmware than I thought...

I can confirm that it IS FULLY REVERSIBLE. You just need to reformat using ODIN while putting an official ROM.
Hi all..my opinion, the old desire is more smooth and faster than DZ. Is it only me, or does anyone else have the same opinion? I installed an app to monitor cpu usage. The graph indicator jumps to 100% eventhough I did not open other tasks, maybe just background processess. Can anyone share their opinion here? Thank you in advance.
This is my third HTC Sense phone now, having owned a hero, desire and now the desire Z, and I can say this is the quickest and most lag free stock rom I have ever used, by a long long way.
However if your really having issues then root and install a custom rom, VillainRomz will be out very soon which is based on stock sense and is fantastically fast.
Thanks for the reply..i owned a deesire before, and sold it to get this..but really i feel DZ is laggy compare to my old desire, even with stock rom..i bought this second hands from another person, he claimed that this is just a week old but he want to resell it to get a desire hd. Somehow i doubt if this is a genuine htc phone. This phone is "made in China". Got htc factory in china? My old desire made in Taiwan. How can i verify this? Can i use the IMEI num to check it? Any method to check the actual age of this phone? Really need help here.
I think DesireZ is the smoothiest I ever had, even compared with the lagfixed I9000.
I know there is a website which you can input IMEI and it can tell you the where does it come from. I forgot the site address but I will check and update to you later.
About your laggy DZ. I think the ex-owner has done something wrong on it. Have you ever tried to back to factory reset and see if it still lags?

My DZ is "Made in Taiwan".
Thanks for the reply mate, really appreciate it. i tried the link, the result came out:
Note: This IMEI number seems to be correct, but we do not have any information on this specific handset. Please add the missing information below.
Then there was boxes to fill in for the brand and phone model, and network type. but after i added the informations, then click the button "ADD", evrything just dissappear, back to the page before i inserted the IMEI num.
does this means my DZ is not genuine?
feeling down.
Mine's made in China too, and was incredibly laggy by default. I assume the difference is quite simple: is yours the Asia/Pacific model? Mine is too.
It's likely that HTC have multiple factories, and ours came from one in China. Regardless, the stock ROM on it had a whole tonne of **** I didn't want, and the phone didn't need - including Starhub TV, which was laughable.
Since flashing the Villision ROM the phone has been much, *much* better. It's no longer crashing 3+ times a day, it's no longer laggy, and all that unremoveable bloat is gone.
I suspect the hardware is fine; the default, integrated Asia/Pacific ROM is ****house however.
thanks nzfrio. its enlighting to know other ppl got the same issue. yes, mine is asia/pacific model (Singapore to be exact). So got HTC factory in china? so thats mean my DZ i genuine? if that so, its the best news i heard today. thanks mate.
so i guess the culprit is the stock rom itself. have to search for a good rom then. i will appreciate if anyone can suggest a good rom here, other than villian rom suggested by Lennyuk above. but i will give villian rom a go first.. hope this will solve my problem..
Rooted with vision overclocked at 1.3 and running real smooth. Smoother than my friends captivate

Mine's the Singaporean one too, so I guess we have the same model . I can't say for sure if there's an HTC factory in China, but I'd be amazed if there wasn't (especially considering they're a Chinese company - I can't post an outside link yet, but you can check Wikipedia) - why go to all the trouble of producing a replica *this* accurate, and then **** it up with an obvious label on the back ? So yeah, I'd be stunned if they were imitation phones .
The Villision ROM is pretty good; it's fast, and it's nice to use. The only thing you should be wary of is that by default, your keymap will be messed up and the capacitive keys won't work. This is due to the keymap for our phones not being in that ROM (it's based on the G2 AOSP ROM); you can flash a small update to get them working . See the thread on it in the Desire Z Development forum for more info; someone posted the update in there.
Other than that, Cyanogen will be slick when it's out I'm sure; I'm going to wait for the final release and see how easy it is on the battery before trying it out though! I'm also hoping we get a MIUI port sometime in the future.

Though there was no laggy on my DZ with stock ROM, I have just still installed the Villian ROM 30 minutes ago and the ROM was really fine. If you are going to flash a custom ROM, I will suggest you to try this ROM first.
latest update: i can't root my DZ using visionary!!

HTC are a Taiwanese company. I think they'd be kind of upset to be called Chinese, given the relations between Taiwan and China.

There's a suggestion that the latest batch of phones (e.g. Vodafone UK-branded ones, and Asian phones) have a different serial number range and perhaps have been changed somehow that makes the current permanent rooting not work (though temp root should still work).
Work is ongoing on this, so currently we don't know for sure what the details are.

I used the RAGE method, but I would recommend caution; the phone does behave erratically while you're typing the commands in (acore crashes repeatedly) which is pretty disconcerting. Just make sure you have the latest VISIONary .
i feel my phone is considerably slower than my brother's 'normal' desire. especially scrolling through the app drawer.
Mine is made in China (so it says on the back of the box) and on that IMEI check website it says "Note: This IMEI number might to be correct, but it is impossible to get this confirmed."
ALSO i CANNOT get permanent root using rage or Visionary

I am a Hong Kongnese but immigrated to Taiwan for 15 years than came back to HK 3 years ago and currently living in Mainland China. So, you're right. Taiwan people don't usually call themselves Mainland Chinese, but will call Taiwanese. Anyway, it's a never ending political issue between these 2 countries.....
Despite of that. Can anyone in the forum recommend me a Cyanogen ROM which can use on DZ and can enlarge the font size. Everything on DZ are good except this annoying small font which I have to use a magnifier to read the contents all the time......tragedy!
since we have CWM recovery, i wonder if we can just flash the official update from 3.0.1 to 3.1?
i am afraid to test as we do not have any original sbf to restore to if something goes wrong.
i open up the update and don't see any radio related files, i guess it might be safe.
any ideas you guys?
i have rooted my xoom, is there anyway i can dump the whole thing as a backup, try the update, and if something goes wrong, restore it?
the-update-is-for-US-xoom-it-will-not-work-here-we-are-not-cdma.
I get fed up of repeating this sentence like a drone, I think I'm going to make a quick text.
bloody motorola... what so different in that?
can't they just do something similar to what the Nexus S is, where they are all compatible?
i don't see any hardware difference apart from the radio.
( i am referring to wifi xoom).

Motorola is American, America comes first, so we have to wait. Unfortunately they seem to be one of those c ompany that doesn't deal with their international customers very well and so we have no information.
I think the real difference is that the American XOOM is a G.E.D (Google Experience Device) so they get direct google updates, where ours is not, so we have to wait on Motorola.

I understand that the hardware on the UK/EU wifi version is the same as the US version, while the software is different. Is it possible to load the US software onto the UK hardware and make my device a G.E.D.? If we're going to get dicked around like we did with the Droid/Milestone, then I might just return it and buy an iPad 2 (for all their problems they do seem to get that they are selling a product to a global audience).

Hardware is the same, I'd do exactly that with the Wifi Only and just install the US images, then you get the updates like they do. We can't do that with the 3G one though because their 3G is CDMA and ours isn't so there are some differences that make it impossible for us to just use their images.

And to do this do I need to unlock the boot loader?
As far as I understand all I have to do is firstly factory wipe from the settings menu, then enable the debug USB option, plug it in to my PC and follow the commands listed here? Or is there more to it than that? I've been a happy Nexus One stock user so I've never really bothered to learn any of this stuff prior to this.
