Hi,
I am only doing a soft reset after a scheduled backup with Spb. In two months, I had only 2 or three crashes with my HD2.
Daniel
Well I had an HTC touch cruise with the official HTC 6.1 wm rom and only did a soft reset, once every 5 months or something. I just bought the HD2 recently, but I don't think to do a soft reset often (depends on the apps that I install though).
unfortunatelly i am not very lucky, i have mapped the volume keys in coreplayer but once i exit the player, the buttons do not function as to increase and decrease the volume so anyway i have to reset at least once a day to be able to use the volume buttons
Not a single crash here. I only soft reset my HTC HD2 after a programm installation or some maintenance operation when im tinkering with it.
Not a single crash here!
BUT
Have to soft-reset several times a day thanks to the buggy volume fuction (disapearing volume overlay in HTC Album and Music) for no reason (or after using CorePlayeror even Youtube app) and because of TouchGL function (pinch-zoom) no longer working in native WM apps (in File Explorer etc) for no god damn reason either. Same on all roms 1.44/148/1.61...

seems like we have the same problem...pitty otherwise no need to soft reset
For me ....
once a day is enought
once everyday
Only when requested by an installation. I could go on for a week or more without a soft reset.
i only do a soft reset if this is neded after installing new software
i have not used softreset so far except after software install which require softreset of course.
Because of a crash.......... only maybe 3 times in 2 months.
I softreset 2-3 times a day, because sometimes the sms messages wont send before i softreset and try to send another message
interesting thought, maybe we can have a poll at the beginning of this thread
once or twice a day, and i usually open the cover every two days. But i do abuse it a lot, so its kinda my fault
This is my 4th HTC phone in 2 years and I have routinely turned them off every nite (equivalent to a soft reset), plugged them into the charger to get a full charge the next morning. Never had any battery problems. A daily reset is good for the device; no harm done anyway!
I reset whenever an installs requires it.
And then the worst part...when the SIP-icon-overlay dissapears (the little icon showing the diffrent keyboards)
Anyone who knows how to fix this?? I cannot seem to find out if it's an installed app, that causes this or not /
Mine is crashed many times.
mine crashes at least once a day. most was 3 times a day i think.. barely had the phone for 3 weeks too.
its by far the worst WinMo phone i've bought. i really hope they put out a proper ROM soon.
I don't experience problems with my HD2, except 1 time when I tried to install something and it didn't succeed.
anyway I must say that I switch off my device during the night, better battery life...
I'm happy with my HD2,
have it since availability of the device, 1x time it was frozen I remeber.
For one week now I installed ROM 1.48 and hope it still will go on working flawless;-)

I don't know why I'm having this problem but at least twice a day I have to soft reset my phone because of a program not closing or opening "hanging" the phone in state where nothing works. I also have to soft reset because of bluetooth problems. Sometimes the phone will tell me that it doesn't have bluetooth hardware or I won't be able to open the bluetooth window to turn it on or off or discoverable. Then I must reset to get it to work. What a pain! These problems are driving me nuts and I don't know what to do about it. I am considering abandoning this phone because of it's unreliability but it has so many features that it's hard to let it go. Please help me!
First of all - don't abandon the phone; this is NOT normal behavior for this PDA/phone and there should be a solution to your problems. I have had this phone (i-mate) for months, and it has always been stable and trustworthy.
Next, it would be helpful for you to post your current ROM information - (Start -> Settings -> System -> Device Information)
Next, list the programs you have installed.
Have you tried Hard Resetting the device (after backing it up) and using it for a while without installing ANY additional software? This will tell you if the base hardware/software is performing correctly. If that works, try installing any additional software ONE AT A TIME and using the device for a while after each one to make sure that one works. Then, if that one is OK, install the next one. This should pinpoint any software that causes the problems.
Let us know the results of your tests.
1. When did you last HardReset? - Sometimes a few hours of work make your life really better!
2. What's the ROM version? - Possibly you should upgrade.
3. Did you notice that you are using WindowsMobile2003 - usage of internet connection with WindowsXP without a couple of restarts never happened to me, so I don't expect Windows Mobile work with more stability! Kidding!
Conclusion: don't give up the phone - you just have to make clear what goes wrong! Good luck!
Nope, not normal usage. I've been using my i-mate for 2 weeks without a hard reset now, but just today it hard resetted on me (due to wisbar advance 2.) I'm not sure how wisbar does it, but it always gives me problems w/ it installed.
my observations
I'm a new user of the XDA I, and I find that I haven't had any unexpected hard resets yet (fingers crossed) but that I do need to soft reset at least once per day, usually to get the machine to (re)connect thru ActiveSync...
I only get the dreaded, continious soft reset problem when I install loads of crappy software.
Have you installed any share/freeware latetely.
If so only a hard reset will fix it.
SoftResets are tolerated, HardReset - once upon 2-3 months. If more often or auto - change the ROM. Auto HardReset happened to me twice - always after flashing.
So I'm a stickler for stability and it drives me nuts (we all have our weird problems ) when things don't run stably.
i.e. I take very good care of my Windows XP PC, it's been running for 12 weeks straight now without needing a reboot, power down, nothing. Rock solid. I love it.
I'm running the Cing 8125 with the new QTEK AKU2 ROM. It's been running pretty well but I'm having the same problem I had witht he original Cingular ROM.
For whatever strange reason and ONLY when I'm not using the 8125, it seems it will soft reset which makes it impossible to pinpoint the cause. I know it has soft-reset because
a) My memory is back at like 23MB free which is what I have after soft-reset.
b) None of my apps are running anymore - duh!
c) Best of all, I have a today plug-in that keeps track of uptime so I know EXACTLY when the soft-reset happened.
I can't understand what would trigger it, when I'm actually using it, the device is fast and solid. I'm not running any crazy apps that I would think could lead to this unstability.
How long have you gone without a soft-reset? What's bizzare is the most recent soft reset happened this morning at exactly 1:00AM!!!! What are the odds of a random reset happening exactly at 1AM? No, I don't have any notifications, alarms or anything around that time.
Here's the uptime meter I'm using if you want to try it out:
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/uptimemeter.shtml
I wish it would soft-reset when I was using it so I could at least know what was causing it.
The same is happening to me, although it soft resets once every 2 weeks or so. I must say I turn off the device every night, but it has happened to me 3 o 4 times since I installed de Qtek AKU2 ROM.
Any solution?
I mentioned this once before on here. I catch mine doing it at night sometimes (in the day its usually in my pocket so I don't know if it does it there).
I've only seen it a few times, maybe once every 2 weeks.
The odd thing is, that when restarting after it's random soft reset, it doesn't require me to enter my pin code. It's almost as if it knows that it's been naughty and was hoping I wouldn't notice
Maybe it's a "feature" of WM5??
I understand that this forum is filled with developers. So I am hoping for some informed help. If you have any of these same problems please respond as well. I would like to know if these are isolated to my setup
I migrated from a cel phone and a PPC running WM2003/2003se. Mainly for the converged device, but also for the persistent storage. I run a small business, and and am very busy and rely on my phone and schedule all day everyday.
I have only had the wizard (MDA) for about 3 weeks and experienced odd problems since the first weekhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/eek.gif
. Unfortunately I did not buy new, so I am not sure if any of these are covered by warranty or not... I am just going to list the problems:
1) If I leave my phone plugged in at night to charge than by the time I wake up the phone will not come out of standby. I have to press the soft reset button to get the unit to work again. This happens intermittently
2) I use an alarm program so that the unit acts like an alarm clock. If the phone is plugged in at night, and does not experience problem number 1, than the alarm just won't go off. I turn on the phone and the alarm program is open, but it did nothing. If the phone is not plugged in than the alarm works fine.
3) Soft buttons. I have the registry set to remap what the soft buttons do. I use Agenda Fusion (Latest Version) so i have them set to open the calendar and the contacts to Agenda Fusions view of them. This works most of the time. On occasion the soft buttons just stop working except for running through the menus for reminders.....
4)The other day i went to take a photo, the camera said that it could not proceed because there was not enough memory. At the time I had 30 megs of storage free, about 12 megs of program free and about 900 meg left on my sd card...
5) Every so often the unit won't launch a program, it says that the exe is unsigned or not trusted. It works every other time though.
6) I use cLaunch. Every so often cLaunch disappears from the today screen. The only wat to get it to reappear is to remove it from the today screen from the today items menu, wait a couple of seconds and then return it to the today screen.
7) Every so often the unit stops recognizing the sd card..have to remove and re-insert
8) I use reminders for all my calender and to do items. Occasionally the reminder will go off for a certain item 24 hours in advance, even though the setting is correct in the item...
I feel like I am missing a few problems. But you get might point, WM5 is weird. All of the above can be corrected with a soft reset. But sometimes the problems show up multiple times a day. Causing me to have to soft reset in the most inconvenient times, several times a day.http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/mad.gif
I did not have these problems under WM2003. I have a friend who uses a Verzion phone that is similar to the wizard (made by a different company though, not HTC...it has an external antennae and that is where the stylus is stored as well) She and I were comparing phones today. Hers runs WM5 but she said that she has never experienced any of these problems in the 1 year that she has owned hers...
Is this an HTC Wizard problem? A WM5 problem with the wizards? Would it help if i installed on of the alternate roms that I read about here on XDA developers? I am considering a hard reset and starting from scratch but I don't want to go that route unless it is the only way. And if I do, I may just use one of those roms.....What does everybody think?http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/confused.gif
Sorry for the long winded post....
Seems like a software problem based on (1) and (2). Is the ROM an official ROM?
Re:
Hello Hanmin Thanks for responding,
Re Number 1. I just saw that some one else posted with that problem. So I will see if they have they same alarm program installed. I have wondered if everything is software related. Thats why I am hoping to see if others are having these types of problems, and if so, what programs they are using...
Re the rom...yes it the official T-mobile release, version listed in my sig.
Thanks again
New problem
I have just encountered a new problem:
While picking up my voice mail the system would not register my button pushes. Weather on screen or the hardware buttons. I could not interact with voice mail, nor could I end the call with the hardware button or the soft button....I had to reset the phone to end the call!!
How frustrating is that
Have you tried reflashing the original ROM? Being a used phone that would be the first thing I would do. It's going to wipe out all your data and return it to an "out of box" state, so i suggest backing up anything important and sync to your PC. If that doesn't work then you have a hardware issue but I'm willing to bet that should take care of it. You can find the original ROM on HTP's website. Good Luck
Thank you
Thanks for that suggestion....I am hoping to not go down that road, if I can help it. But I will do it if there are no other options. So If I may ask: How many votes does re flashing old Rom Get? And are there any other ideas?
Again Thanks. I am going to download the rom in case it does come to that....
wait...the phone dosen't wake up unless you push the small button on the top of the phone? That is not the default setting on the MDA, however it's acting naturally. Our phones go on a standby to save power. Click the battery icon in the lower right hand corner-->Click the Advanced tab--> uncheck Turn off device on external power
Misunderstanding....
When the phone is plugged in over night and reaches %100 charge some times it won't "Wake Up" even hitting the power button on top. The only thing that will turn it on is the "Soft Reset" button on the right side, beneath the IR sensor.

It sounds like you have software problems - possible a corrupt notification queue - personally i would do a hard reset of the device - probably in the process of this i would soft reset before the t-mobile extras install - taking details of gprs, mms settings before this.
I would run the phone without installing software to see that its not a hardware problem. Then reinstall programs one by one and see how it goes. Some software like claunch is not made for wm5 so expect some glitches (i use claunch and get occ glitch)
If you dont want to hard reset check the notification queue for duplicates and rogue scripts using check notifications - attached - install via pc. Dont delete notifications important for system running - common duplicates are clock\calendar.
alarm problems
Hi,
frankly i had similar issues - less critical but annoying: alarm clock not waking me up, slow system, notification queue mess, difficult resets, camera issues, bluetooth a2dp skipping. I upgraded my Qtek multiple times, and finally i can say that 2.26 roms (i use molski's) are exceptionally stable and reliable. The problem is not Wm5, the problem is how buggy many released versions are. So, my suggestion: look to the forum, find roms that appear to have a reliable history, cross your fingers and...upgrade. Then, resist in upgrading to any rom that just came out and appear to be faster, cooler, nicer. Unless you have an issue to be solved, and you see 100 messages confirming that the rom is stable and does the job...
Thank you meschle and pzucchel for the thorough answers. I am going to try the notification queue first.
@ Meschle: where do I find the gprs, & mms settings? And should I just copy them down by hand? Then after re-starting w/out tmobile crap, do I just put these settings in the same place as where I found them?
@ Pzucchel: Do you believe that Molski's 2.26 is more stable than the Tmobile factory installed 2.26?
Thanks again

Write them down manually its the safest way - there are cabs available but often dont work.
GPRS - settings\connections\connections\manage existing connectons - settings should be here prob named t-mobile
MMS - go into messages\menu\options\MMS\servers click on prob t mobile again.
Thanks again!

Hi tvrman.
For starters, install Sprite backup (on one of the CD's you got with the Ameo). This will eradicate the need for a full install after a hard reset in the future!
I suggest you do a full hard reset anyway then install Sprite Backup utility.
Only put back your essential apps one by one with 1/2 a days gap between each installation and test the turn off turn on function.
Be sure to use the supplied X-Button application to ensure you properly clode apps down after you're finished with them....or use Wisbar Advance 2, which will do it for you....except for Active Sync (this will always remain active unless shut down manually in memory menu).
I have not once suffered the problem you have in over a months use of the Ameo....might be a faulty unit or a buggy ROM. What version ROM are you using?
Anyway, if all goes well over the next 3 days, do a full backup and save a copy to your storage card or micro drive and be sure to copy a copy over to your PC...that should future peoof you having to do a full install again in the future. And be sure only to back up, if you have no problems with the device and the problems you mentioned earlier. Otherwise you will allways restore the bugs in the device after a hard reset.
Hope this helps. keep us updated on how you get on.
Mackaby007
thanks for you professional answer, i was not aware that spd backup
was on the cd which was delivered at the ameo.
Well yesterday i found out that one of the programs (profimail)
which i'm using serveral times a day for my mail, that this is the problem
I found out that yesterday i didn't use profimail but the built in mail the
whole day and the ameo did not freeze at all the whole day
tried to turn it off an on the whole day and no problems at all,
yesterday late i start profimail and check serveral mails, i close profimail
and turn the device off, later turn it on and a black screen it would not
turn on
After soft reset everthing works.
So i will check today again without using profimail and see what's happends
again.
i'll let you know....
hi,
I had the same problem.
My solution was to format the mini-sd card.
So what i did:
1. copied all data on de minisd in a cardreader to a directory on pc
2. Formatted (not quick) the minisd
3. Copied all data back to the minisd.
All the tests I have tried suggest it is Wisebar Advance 2 that is causing the freezing.
Anyone else find this? Shame as it is the program I like the most

No such issue here! WA2 runs like a dream on my Ameo...even better than it did on my Hermes or Prophet! I'm using the 2.8.0.2 version of WA2 without WAD.
WA2 + WAD
Yes, in my case it was also WA2. I made my own skin and all work fine. But in time I got more lock-ups. So I decided to reinstall everything. Then things went wrong. That day I have installed everything 6 times. Every time I had lock-ups when I pushed the power button and activated it again. But after disabeling WA I had no troubles anymore. The last production and beta version have the same problems. At this point I have to advice not to use WA2. I did not examine every feature of WA2. So there can be one feature that caused the problem. I made my own iPhone landscape skin and I was very pleased. Could somebody try this skin to see if it freezes their device?
skin

I use a lot of apps. I also use the following plugins on WAD:
SPB Diary
Profiles for Windows Mobile
Windows Life Messenger

I'll give the skin a test run in an hour, but I refuse to use plug-ins again. They have always caused me problems, but WA2 never has. What version were you running?
Tried the i-phone skin and have experienced no issues whatsoever.
Maybe the Problem is WAD and your plug-ins.
WAD keep on giving problems like this...it's a sin for such an interesting application...here it is because I gave up to use it.

trayap.exe
Since I removed the trayap.exe from the init part of the registry I did not have any freezing anymore. I will try WA2 again to see if this solves my problem.
By the way, I am using the latest beta's of WA2 and WAD
hi all
i find that if i use the off button to turn off the backlight whilst media player is running it jams the machine, requiring a reboot. i know that i can usethe light button on the keyboard but i sometimes forget that media player is running (ie. paused).
I have the same freezing problem now after a few weeks of usage.
The device was running very nicely but now, without installing anything further or adding anything to the device, it freezes randomly.
It likes to freeze when the backlight goes off, while I play MP3 files or have a phone conversation using bluetooth.
In the past 4 days I have softreset the device no less than 81 times.
I suspect the Microdrive is to blame. Is it sensitive to movement?
I will remove all my software and other files from the microdrive and see if things improve.
In the mean time, has anyone else experienced random and frequent freezing?
Oh, I have the Dopod U1000 branded device with the latest firmware.
ok, I had it with this. 16 more soft resets within 4 hours.
I hard reset the device. So far I see no random freezing, but I didn't install anything extra yet except ozVGA and VJBigPhone. And both of them on the internal memory, so nothing on the microdrive.
I use stock ROM at the moment with few added programs from trusted resources only (tomtom, coreplayer). I really like the phone. But around once a week it just stops responding, need to do reset. I am not heavy user of it, besides talking mostly use to read email, listen music, and check few web pages (no gaming, chating, etc). Spoke to some iPhone friends, they do not remember ever reseting device. I don't like iPhone for other reasons and really wanted this device to by iPhone killer It is in most cases, but not on stability, at least in my case.
Do you often need to reset the phone? Can something be done about it? I would agree to run some every night (sheduled) reset software if it exists. However it might be not possible, since during startup you need to enter PIN into phone...
How can I get my pride back?
do you close the applications after using them? please mind that by default, the x button only minimizes, leaving them open. to close, you must acces the task manager but it's much easier if you install a third party one. for example, with dutty's task manager you can set the x button to actually close the programs and also, you can very easily manage them.
besides this, i recommend you install cleanram which is a very good tool if you want to avoid resetting the phone.
you can disable the pin password in security settings.
I too use Tomtom and Coreplayer but I have only had to soft-reset once since I got the phone ages ago.
Mind you, I do switch the phone off and back on again every day before I synch with Outlook, so maybe that's why it's so stable!
thank you 27firesnake, will try to find dutty's task manager and cleanram to install. I do close programs from time to time, but not immediatelly. As you mentioned it is not that convenient.
Disabling PIN would allow to run some script to reset phone at some intervals. Most convenient would be to set it let's say to run at 4 a.m. on Saturday night, so it does not disturb you, but also limits the risk of not hearing alarm, if something goes wrong .... Wonder if that posibility to restart phone on shedule exists?
Jim, restarting phone every day certainly reduces potential error risk
i don't know if the phone has this feature already but there is a very nice app for this called g-profile. i installed it once and it worked fine on my hd2 but i don't really need it so i don't have it anymore. i recommend you try it, who knows it may become one of the essentials for you.
I have to restart my phone at least twice a week, back-cover off, battery out, and start it up again!
If I don't manually restart it each evening, sometimes the alarm doesn't go off in the morning and I might get the 'SMS stuck' problem during the following day ... so, by restarting it each evening the phone works more-or-less okay for me.
However, it's still sad that I need to do that on a 630 eur phone.
As I only got it a week ago and spend my time installing and removing stuff I'm resetting 10 times a day...
But once that early excitement phase is behind I hope it will be like my previous TyTN II, a reset every 1-2 weeks.
WM seems to have it's "humor" though. Sometimes it won't crash for 2 weeks, sometimes it will crash 5 times the same day. That's always doing the same things, of course.

Thats one of the funnier things I've heard about WM for awhile!
I have a spare battery in an external charger. When the juice is low I swap it for the freshly charged battery, thereby doing a soft reset anyway. On average my battery lasts 2 days. So I soft reset every 2 days.
Reasons I do this:
- Prolongs each battery by spreading out the number of cycle charges (I think its ~300 for LiIon batteries).
- Soft reset = fresh RAM to play with.
- By opening and closing the battery cover on a regular basis, I hope to loosen it (its so bloody tight!).
I used to have a application on my TP that had a lot of features including to soft reset the phone every night, and entering your pin code (which you had to insert in that program) i will look for it again when im home i hope i still have it. it also had some really usefull features like turn the sound of during the night!
