ergonomy - HD2 General

Respects to all for trying to make the product experience better.
Newborn HD2 user for a week, and reading a lot on it, wanted to give a first opinion. I quite enjoy it, but forced to food battery every night...
talking batteries leads to ergonomy, & imo HTC designers totally missed common sense on some points: notice the deceptive "back shell" of the HTC HD2. A different bum > so the only butt of a LeoHD2 shoud be its... tiny lens?! ... plan buying a "hard/flat" leathercase shortly., bc a pencil leans it a bit but hardly stabilizes the beast. or may be the boat? surfboard? put it on the desk, try typing, calibrate, press start menu of its biiiig screen...
annoying?
hi capa battery, should it be bigger size, could give the opportunity to solve this mistake. changing the back shape of the phone, adding stability +a little "slope" \ leaning twrds user.
other remarks on accessories?packaging/finishing:
this phone is supposed to survive till late 2010 wm7??
well selling it as a phone, a lanyard system wouldve been much appreciated: idea for leathercase manufacturers? an oakley sunglass bag too pls
& a functioning stylus for big fingers
. many phones sd cards can only be switched pulling off the battery.
The HD2 supports microSD hotplug, and could easily have had a dedicated always accessible orifice like my sharp903 had (can calls be redirected via bluetooth on it please? )
Will users see SENSE major updates? i hope so!
the system is good but isnt really finished f ex needs max manilla
. in my (french) version no way to add all facebook friends to contacts in one shot even synchronizing, while this op is so easy n annoying with wlm msn contacts... always create the contact first, then link to profile
. whats more the facebook mail of the contact isnt imported
in contacts details also, strange "lets call it bug":
date of birth (date de naissance) AND birthday (anniversaire)
...
have a fix ?)

About. stability.
As a former Diamond user, with its "design" backplate was totally unusable.
But now with the HD2. I never let it touch the desk I always let it rest on its sleeve. then so its stability is just about perfect.
Lanyard system.
well I suppose you are a HD2 owner. And having the thing hanging there on your neck would be a little INpractical. Its is big. So just put it in its sleeve and in your pocket. you dont want this thing hanging on your neck.
You also say (int isnt fisnished) and it needs MAX manilla..
Please INSTALL it then..
And about the facebook app.
Download a newer version. And its a little unclear to me what you want with the facebook contacts.
Im under the assumption that you have already a contact, then you link this contact to a facebook contact
"in contacts details also, strange "lets call it bug":

What exactly is the bugg there ??
happy new year!!

Hi,
Well I just meant a wrist lanyard not a neckwear one, as digital cameras have.
I did instal max manilla. pitty htc thought we might just need 9 shortcuts and a huge clock.
About facebook, I didn't talk about the app: there is a sync function in parameters/data services/social networks. It would have been great to really be able to sync all fb friends in contacts, like msn does, instead of sync linking each contact one by one.
Date of birth (date de naissance) AND Birthday (anniversaire) shouldn't both appear along, as it's just the same thing...
This phone is great, but would have necessited maybe a lil more dev.
yup, have a hippy new year!

Touch H.D. - A review from a W.M. Virgin

I was due an upgrade from Orange, after having used a n95 for the last year or so, which was a device I liked. Works straight out of the box as a phone, with the features you would expect a modern phone to have aready implemented in a user friendly manner. Also has the capability to be updated and personailse as you see fit - mine had orange o.s. ripped out within a day of arriving.
Knowing an upgrade was due I spent an afternoon on the net wondering what to go for. Seriously consider decamping to O2 for an iphone, mainly because of the data tariffs there, but had my eye turned by this new Touch H.D. gizmo. Now partly because a few of my mates already have iphones, and partly because I enjoy being contrary, and also because I hate the way "Apple" are trendy and Microsoft hated, the H.D. it was.
Haggled away with Orange and managed to get 1200mins, 500 texts, 0.5gig data for 45 quid month. So in went my order.
The HD arrived the next day. I excitedly opened the very sexy packaging (I have a very sad affection for gadget boxes and keep them for years - even after the device has packed up!), had a quick read of the quick start, plugged her in and off I went.
Nice looking skin, quick to where you want to go. Seems good.
But then things got sticky. I wanted to find out how to bluetooth contacts over to the H.D. Nothing in the quickstart nor the pdf. I know, I know, I could of stuck me old sim in and copied the contacts over, but this is a new toy and we like to play, right? After a couple of hours got an answer over the interweb about how to do this. Phew. Then did the sensible thing of copying these contacts to the sim for safety. Uh oh - the dreaded duplicate contact showing problem.
Then I decided to try the browser. As per another post I could not connect to wifi for an age, then it suddenly started working. Furthermore, I was getting a constant "xml parsing error" when trying to connect via Orange Internet. Had had the phone six hours now, and had only managed to get duplicate contacts on! Arrggghh, fustration of the nation.
Sent a text to a mate, only had I? No sending confirmation. What is going on? Oh, all messages--->sent. Mmm, hardly immediately user friendly.
I was getting tired, so set the alarm. How primitive thought I. More primitive than I realised when I was awoken and finally worked out that three button presses were required to get the alarm into snooze mode. Three! And only then if you had randomly pressed the alarm icon in the top bar in the hope it would do something - couldn't see this advice in any instructions anyway.
So by my second day was getting very dubious about this hardware, even allowing for the mandatory new device learning curve. Happily I stumbled across this place. Installed all the recommended softwares.
Klaxon - hey, my alarm now works like all the other alarms on all other phones.
Adavance Config - hey now I get an sms sent confirmation, and my phone is faster.
Backup -copied my contacts from the storage card, after running this programme, to my pc, deleted the sim contacts and hey presto! No more duplicate sims, and a safe back up.
I then played around with the advanced connection setting and the connection wizard and bang - my browser now works!!!
Suddenly I start to like this phone. Nay love it. It appeals to the very big geek inside of me. Its hard to use, you have to batter away at it to make it user friendly. It's more like a p.c. than a phone - ding dong! It is more like a p.c. than a phone.
And here in lies a problem I believe for the majority of users who will gets this phone and will be flummoxed by it and bin it back to Orange.
It needs to be set up as a phone first if Orange are flogging it as a phone, and not a p.d.a. as they do Blackberry. Little things, like a decent alarm clock, sms confirmation, instructions for contacts, turn off sim contacts option. A much better wlan interface - akin to the N95 would help. On that device selecting the browser gives you a pop up which gives you the option of orange internet, or if one is available a wlan. A simple click on the wlan you want and you're in. All very easy, and in contrast to having to open up communication, wireless lan, wlan, advanced, to swap to a different wlan.
None of these things would take too much effort to implement, and would make the Touch HD excellent for a beginner out of the box.
Your average user though will find these irritatations unforgiveable in some circumstances, and if the rumours of high returns to Orange are right, I bet the above bug bears have a large part to play in this.
However, once the phone is personalised, and once it is accepted as a computer, then I think it is fantastic. It's gorgeous to look at and hold, there's lots of nice little features- cover flow in favourite contacts is good eye candy for example.
And now I realise Ive got another piece of Redmond in my pocket, I'm even happier. This phone is a geeks dream - the "chic of tweak" perhaps? After four days with it I love it. I'm going to love it even more in months to come when some clever peeps get Android running on it, or when WM6.5/7 comes out.
A fantastic computer that does phone calls, as well. But out of the box, not a fantastic phone.
Just my 2p's worth.
Interesting to read your experience. I'll keep some of those things in mind when I get my phone next week. Do you have links to the software you added from here? (like Klaxon, Advanced Config, Backup...) I know I can search the forum, but I thought maybe you had them handy to post.

Remember also when you get your phone to add "file manager" to your list of programmes. The software is already on the phone, and you need it to navigate to your storage card to run new programmes.
Enjoy!

Thanks!
excellent review that provides a good insight for winmo newbies, and I sure recognize my first experience in this, winmo is an acquiered taste and it gets addictive with time because yes, this phone really is an ultraportable PC with a phone slapped onto it. I'm gonna send this to some people I know still sitting on the fence

I hate the HD too!!! (Never thought I'd say that)

I miss my Trinity.
Been using HTC since they weren't branding themselves. My first phone was the Space Needle (ATT Pocket PC). I loved it. Did so much with it. Later flashed it, was very nice.
Then I moved on to the I-Mate Jam. Smaller, sleeker, also fun.
Then I got the Trinity P3600. This is absolutely the best phone there is in my opinion. It's small, light, has GPS, a decent camera, video call, mini SD slot.
I got more from my P3600 and a 2gb card than the HD has given me.
Yes, the HD has more memory, huge screen, better camera (although annoying, and who REALLY uses the camera on their phone for 'real' pictures), ..... wait, what more? For me, nothing.
I miss my d-pad. Try using the HD to go to Call History and view the contact details of the third caller down. You can't! No Way to move down. If you touch the contact, it calls him!!
Try finding a contact with the last name that begins with 'M' when you have 100+ contacts who begin with 'M' and the one you want is in the middle of the list. Oh, "just start typing part of the name" you might say. I DON'T WANT TO!! I'm using one hand. The only way is 'flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking'.
You've heard of "tennis elbow", now there's "flick thumb". What a pain!
And the soft touch buttons. USELESS!!!! First of all, forget the third one, the 'back arrow'. Does anyone use it? I don't. USELESS.
Now, try answering a call while the HD it in it's protective sleeve. While you're trying to slide the damn thing out, you almost inevidibly "answer" or "ignore" by accidentally pressing one of the soft buttons!! USELESS!
Now try putting the HD in your pocket or in the center console in your car. You will soon start hearing.....blip-blip-blip-blip-blip....... That's the soft keys being pressed accidentally.......Now look at the phone, it's frozen with just a start button.
..and and and......
I can go on, but this phone is hard to handle, very "touchy" and just a general PAIN IN THE A$$ to use, not to mention expensive as H3LL!!!
Glad I never sold my P3600. Will be going back to my old tried and true friend today. I flashed my Trinity to WM6.1, and it's GREAT!!!
Hope I can find a sucker to buy the HD before everyone starts realizing it sucks.
Thanks for listening!

haha, u made me laugh
well, firstly, were u blind when u were buying HD? I always check how device looks first, and you? Didn't u see it doesn't has a Dpad?
secondly, all your other problems are that you don't know what's a LOCK DEVICE function is...
in a conclusion, learn how to lock the device first, then you can talk about it
I miss my Trinity.
You still have it, so how can you miss it??
I miss my d-pad. Try using the HD to go to Call History and view the contact details of the third caller down. You can't! No Way to move down. If you touch the contact, it calls him!!
Working fine here.....
Try finding a contact with the last name that begins with 'M' when you have 100+ contacts who begin with 'M' and the one you want is in the middle of the list. Oh, "just start typing part of the name" you might say. I DON'T WANT TO!! I'm using one hand. The only way is 'flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking' 'flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking'.
You've heard of "tennis elbow", now there's "flick thumb". What a pain!
Don´t quite understand the problem.....
And the soft touch buttons. USELESS!!!! First of all, forget the third one, the 'back arrow'. Does anyone use it? I don't. USELESS.
Use AEButton Plus and assign any functions you like....
Now, try answering a call while the HD it in it's protective sleeve. While you're trying to slide the damn thing out, you almost inevidibly "answer" or "ignore" by accidentally pressing one of the soft buttons!! USELESS!
Agreed.....that´s why I never used the pouch...
Now try putting the HD in your pocket or in the center console in your car. You will soon start hearing.....blip-blip-blip-blip-blip....... That's the soft keys being pressed accidentally.......Now look at the phone, it's frozen with just a start button.
Can´t duplicate....
The Bug is not the device but rather the User...in this case
I was very concerned when I saw this thread as I will finally get my HD tomorrow. All the complaints made seem to be a user problem, I was able to do everything he couldn't do on my Diamond just using the screen, so I assume that that would be exactly the same as the HD.
I think everyone on these forums understands that most WM phones aren't the best out of the box but with tweaking the phones are made into great devices that are really interesting and are never boring because you can change so much.
If you want a device that just works with minimal functions so you don't get upset or have brain overload, the iphone is a great peace of hardware but WM has so much more to offer if you are willing to tweak and play around abit.
I think instead of posting "I hate the HD", it would be more appropriate to post.... "I need some help with some functions" and with the wealth of knowledge here you will get some answers very quick and not give people like me heart attacks reading your misleading posts.

i wouldnt say iphone was a great piece of hardware, but it is miles better for usability...
my hd is a hardware investment till the chaps on this forum make it awesome
All the other points has been covered... So:
I miss my d-pad. Try using the HD to go to Call History and view the contact details of the third caller down. You can't! No Way to move down. If you touch the contact, it calls him!!
-> Flick
-> Basically, i never used the contacts list . Always use the dial key, bring up the keypad, and use smart dialing - much much faster. and yes, its 1 hand operation. You probably not aware of this obvious function? E.g. if you want to call John, type in your keypad 5606 . In the contacts list, There's a alphabet along the screen... touch letter M and it brings u to the M part of your contacts list... i dont think any of us have less than 100 contacts in our phone .
All these are purely your problem for not learning how to use it. not the phone's problem.
The Touch HD surely has flaws, like any other phone, but all of your problems can be avoid by learning how to use it.
Hey, for 100 usd I will be the sucker who buys it..
I could go line by line and combat everything this member says is "wrong" with the HD but I wont. All i can say is i am just not hving the problems he describes None of them with maybe the exception of I simply just dont use the camera. I use my real camera for pic taking

I Love this one: "I DON'T WANT TO!!" - I have a picture in my head of an angry little man dancing around a fire
Yes, I liked my PALM III very much but i came over it. Yes I understand "I DON'T WANT TO!!"
Not once you had a good point. Not once! You should have found one by accident.
The one thing I miss is the roller-wheel of my hermes. But it sounds like I could remap the volume rocker to do something similar, anyone tried this?
I've never used a full touch screen phone before, so like a cautious person I went in to the Orange shop and asked for a demo, which they were happy to give, and realised it wasn't all that daunting. A number of the annoyances with it so far are thanks to the not-so-touch-friendly Winmo 6.1, when someone cracks Android for this thing (apparently the Touch HD will be the new T-Mobile G2 according to the rumour mill) I'll be more than happy to try it out, plus the modding community will fix it up with their godlike skills, I'm just glad I found these forums!
Objective view, please...
I think most people here did not get the points raised here or have not been objective in their response (it is obvious they are product of their ne gadget); the phone as Windows Mobile is not per se user-friendly. The interface incorporated by HTC is not perfect. The hardware is therefore inadequate since it cannot be complemented by a good piece of software .
HTC has effectively delivered this phone in the same manner as it has done with other previouus devices (albeit a modified soft keyboard) with keypad. Even the TF3D for a WVGA screen, there is not difference to VGA devices, only larger icon and the Stock tab!
Excessive tweaking of the device is not always a good solution as it impacts other areas of the device.
Therefore stating all this is down to user is a best an over statement.
With all this feedback I wonder how HTC development team will feel! I for one do not complaint for the issues raised but admit they are serious problem. I can recall not being able to open the battery cover and having to refer to the manual, still it will not open. Only after several attempts the process became easier.
The iPhone is not always a valid alterative either, since many people wish to have applications that are not designed for this platform, such as any device car navigation program. This is particularly true in this case, as the poster clearly stated his background!
Personally, I must say my main decision for purchasing the BlackStone was merely for the screen size, having used the Universal for over year and then going down to Polaris (screen size wise), and with no sign of the Omni, I was “forced” again to a half solution. Any other aspect of the device was secondary in importance…
Ha, ha, ha...
Ha, ha, ha... thanx for the laugh, angry man
All new gadgets takes some getting use to... The HD i no exeption, especially when you cant use the software your used to because of the screen.
I love my HD though..
What a sound response carla!

I've been quite concerned about HD since I ordered it, and then once I got it (overpriced on HTC distribution orders to retail stores), etc. And finally with many "small" issues I wrote in other threads.
So I fully understand the feelings of angry users.
Has anybody noticed we, (concernerd users) are greatly defined by our previous machine?
It has come to my attention through this and other forums, that ex-TRINITY users are prone to be "in love" with it and not very pleased with HD.
I think this is really somthing to be investigated.
Finally, toying around in a phone store with the machine (if you have had the chance) is not enough to put all the blame in the "unconscious" buyer, it's simply not fair in todays e-shopping.
HTC did a very poor job putting the HD in the market for Christmas time, hope it will get fixed over the time, but i'm still very upset with HTC way of launching new devices.
I won't address all the issues, because other people already have, and because it really just sounds like the problem is more with what YOU like and don't like - and not with the phone. Either you are used to a certain way and you don't really want to change or you are not aware of how you can do things differently to better use the phone. In any case, I do respect your opinion and you have every right to express those thoughts here. Okay, so here are a couple of thoughts from my side.

The camera is descent - not excellent - but descent. The lack of flash is a known downfall. However, keep in mind that no phone out there will replace the quality of an actual camera. The camera feature on the phone is an extra commodity for those moments when you don't want to take a real camera with you or for those good times, when you are hanging out with friends and you don't need to shoot the greatest quality pictures. No camera phone is meant to be used as your main camera for vacation shots etc.

Maybe you don't understand how this feature works. On my HD, if I tap once on a number in the call history list, it DOES NOT call right away, but instead it brings up the call history for that caller alone. Then:
If the caller is in my contacts list, I see the name at the top and possibly a picture (if I added one). Below this, it shows me the call history.
If I tap on the name/picture, it pulls up a list of numbers and email addresses for that contact. If I once again tap on the name/picture, it brings me to that listing so I can edit the contact's information. I can always cancel by pressing menu at the bottom.
If I tap on a given missed call itself, it will call that number. The nice thing is that if that person called me once from their home and another time from their mobile, I can see that here and I can choose which number to call back.
If the caller is NOT in my contacts list, then I simply see "unknown" at the top and then the number that called below that (provided that person does not have their number blocked from callerID). If I tap on the number, it will call that person. If I tap on "unknown", I will eventually end up on my contacts list, where I can assign that number to a contact or I can create a new contact with that number.
I do have to admit, that it has happened a few times, that a contact calls me and in the call history list, I only see the number as if it were an unknown person. In that case, I have assigned that number to the contact and it overrides the number I already had. I don't know why that is. Maybe because some numbers I have entered as 0177-555-5555 and others as +491775555555 (in Germany).
Anyone know if that makes a difference? It seems that sometimes it does and other times it doesn't.

Huh?? Flicking is A LOT faster than pressing a D-pad arrow 80 times to get to your contact. You could also press the M or N on the alphabest list on the right. That way, you'll either see the beginning of the M's or the end of the M's and you can flick from there. Seriously - flicking goes really fast. And typing the first two letters into the name box is NOT that bad. You see, the possibilities here are endless!
Now try putting the HD in your pocket or in the center console in your car. You will soon start hearing.....blip-blip-blip-blip-blip....... That's the soft keys being pressed accidentally.......Now look at the phone, it's frozen with just a start button.

A simple press of the power button locks your phone - and guess what..... no more blip-blip-blip-blip-blip.
Now simply press the power button again and you can blip-blip-blip all you want.
So, there now - you must certainly LOVE your HD now, right?

How can we get this ball rolling?

okay ive had a fair few htc devices, and im a fan of flashing custom roms etc.
i've just ordered an s740 as i think they look like lovely devices and have heard good reviews so far.
Now i've seen olipro's thread which went off topic..
so how shall we get the development ball rolling?
how about a collection to get olipro one of these devices
(going for about £180 - £230 on ebay)
and im sure if we all donate £5 - £10 (or more or less if need be) it wont take us long before we get some good custom roms etc
i know i can't be the only one out there thinking this!
Let me know what you guys think

is everyone really that happy with their device???
Hi,
I only find 1 thing annoying. When the keypad is locked I am still able to use the keys for volume.
For the rest I think the device is pretty good.

I think it is pretty good as well but could still use a few tweaks. I would contribute to any of the following on an otherwise clean ROM...
OS
Windows Mobile 6.5 - Well this is an obvious update, especially if HTC never offers one.
Usability
Tx9 - Sometimes Tx9 is used and sometimes not in various applications on the ROM. Would be much better if it were one or the other.
Browser System Command Warning - Warning on dialing phone numbers from the browser seems unnecessary if the dialer is going to 'verify the number is correct' anyway.
Key backlighting - Frequently I get a reminder late at night and the phone is locked but the reminder doesn't turn on the key backlighting so I can see which option is which. Other applications are inconsistent as well.
Home start menu All Programs - I would prefer to have the option to not see 'all programs' there.
Home start menu scrolling - I don't like having to choose 'more' there. I would much prefer the scrolling through each panel of nine icons.
1,2,3,4 app - I suspect this is an HTC feature but I really dislike having one more UI to learn. When you flip the keybaord open it shouldn't prompt you with a 1 SMS, 2 email, 3 messenger and 4 exit menu even if it is for 5 seconds. Better to keep whatever menu you are in.
Features
Weather Panel - This seems like it should use the GPS and pick a city. Also, if you turn the phone off or in flight mode and turn it back on it should recheck the GPS and change the city or prompt to change the city.
Option to keep keyboard locked even if open - Well some of us have little kids and they figure out how to get the keyboard open pretty quickly
Codecs
I don't know what ships by default but some obvious codecs would be AAC, AC3 and any other standard codecs.
Additional Applications
Impromptu Meeting App - The automatic ring feature is great if you use exchange since your phone will go into vibrate mode in meetings. In fact you get kind of dependent on it handling that for you so if you go to the movies or dinner or an impromptu meeting you forget to switch to vibrate or afterward you forget to switch back. It would be nice to have an app to put a placeholder appointment on your calander for an hour or two (which would switch to vibrate) . Even better if it would remove the appointment afterward.
Shortcuts - It would be nice to create shortcuts to applications in something that shipped with the ROM.
Settings
Home Page - I know this can be changed in the registry but while someone is at it change the web homepage to igoogle or google mobile.
If I like something on Rose, it is boredom with her when setting/tweaking. Without any "exciting" seeking/trying/zilions of reflashings of ROMs.
And, to be honest, MOST of things on your list ARE included in basic settings and some others are easy to be changed by simple (permanent!) tweaks in registry. I'm lazy to collect here what's where, so just two examples:
Rose IN STANDARD supports not just AAC, but AAC+ and eAAC+ as well, others are H.263, H.264, MPEG-4...
Function of your lovely Impromptu Meeting App you can activate on standard Rose in seconds: just activate Auto in Profiles. OK, it does not vibrate (it switches into quiet mode), but it exactly switches automatically ringing behaviour based on calendar events IN STANDARD. And they're much more such things (avoiding Action Menu, keylock not deactivated by sliding of te keyboard)...
So instead of calling for extra ROM, which will do what's already there, my recommendation would be classic: Read the f..... manual first. And if anybody would see gimmicks like iGoogle on homescreen or GPS based weather as so exciting that it will deserve tens (if not hundreds) of working hours on extra ROM just for these - you'll be a lucky man.
IMHO, spending few hours with searching around for settings and these few tweaks would be much faster and time efficient...
we don't need HardSPL, SSPL would be fine. Perhaps we bribe Olipro
$10 each ? whats his price
I'm sure if one of you lent oli your rose for a bit he could work his magic and get the job done
fuk i am on board. can we have some info from olinex(olipro+cmonex) as to how much donations is needed to get this done! i am getting one but shocked as to the lack of dev activity here. come on guys support yourn device.........once we have some solid feedback from the olinex crew then we can get ball rolling! they would really need the device but it is so similar to the touch pro in form factor that HDSPL for touchpro might need slightly tweaking to work on s740
I think this forum is dead no one poast here no one wants to do something with this model..are you so happy with your phones as they are without any improvements?
Maybe if someone could give as a tutorial how to make an HSPL we could do it more fast and we could make the ball rolling can someone do this?i am would be glad to help and do something for this device cuz it`s too awsome :d

The rubbishness of windows comes through very quickly

I got a bit suckered by all the good reviews for this phone on so many websites and bought it yesterday. I've had a long time [misplaced] affection for windows phones. I say misplaced because every single model I've owned has let me down.
The sense interface is great. Windows is not. I've just made 16 attempts at trying to login to windows live, struggling each time to input a 20 char secure password on the dinky keyboard and when i finally got the password right, i succeeded in invoking the 'too many failed logins' mode of windows live. Nice.
why is this stuff so difficult for windows mobile phones? why does the phone not go into landscape mode for EVERY application? why is that so difficult to implement? Why did HTC not put a bloody switch for landscape mode? you have a wide screen which would make an onscreen keyborad far more friendly yet you're still stuck trying to hit the 'sweet spot' on a portrait-mode keyboard!??! Not only are you stuck in portait mode but you no longer have a stylus to help you hit those keys!
The initial WOW factor has disappeared for me and I've only had the phone for a day!
can someone help me with some tips on landscape mode? is there some way i can map one of the hard keys to be a landscape mode switch? or some software that does something similar?
thanks!
Install BSB Tweaks this allows landscape for any appplication
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=589305
I tried but didn't seem to work for me. maybe i was doing something wrong?
i enabled the tickbox for IE and after the soft reset i tried running it but it did nothing when i rotated the screen. Am I missing something here?
try using Gyrator .. It works on every application

I've just made an app that does just that. Have a look at PLToggle in my sig.
Calm down mate, trust me, windows mobile is by far the best OS out there for mobiles. The only reason everyone prefers the iphone is because of its usability, apart from that theres not much you can do but 'get an app for that', however thanks to this forum, you can do almost anything with a windows mobile device, especially one as powerful as the leo. You just need to get used to it, if sense is bugging you, get spb shell or another ui. And of course theres gonna be loads of problems with it, its pretty new, but its good points strongly outway its bad points (oh and might I add, you'll be getting all your tech support from this site, not htc, trust me), so just give it some time and you'll realise, after 'making it yours' how awesome a phone it is.
If the keyboard isnt doing it for you, download a new one! (thats the great thing about winmo) the two popular ones at the moment are swype ( a completely different style of keyboard) or finger keyboard. I personally like the one htc supply you with, heres a tweak taken from this thread which will lower the sensitivy of the screen which makes typing much easier. Alternatively, bsb tweaks can do this all for you from its menu.
Oh and about the rotate thing, on xanny tech's pandora rom, he has a little execuatable file in the start menu with rotates everything, and its mapped to a long press of the send key, so thats pretty useful, im not running his rom anymore but if you know anything about flashing, flash his first, its very good indeed and has lots of tweaks and useful stuff preinstalled.
Hope that helps a little, if not just ask
thanks for your help mate. having bought into a 24 month contract I'm pretty much stuck with getting to learn the phone whether i like it or not.

I agree with [★]. Once you know it better, you'll get to love it. There's so much under the hood of this thing that yes, you'll find a few things that you don't like, but they'll be outweighed by the things that you do

You, Sir, need to check out my thread, which would surely have come up if you had used the search function. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5197442 Windows Live/Hotmail etc seem to only take 16 characters. Anything after that is ignored. But the Windows Live application on mobile accepts more than 16 and will try and authenticate with everything you type in. 20 character password will not work. Reduce your pass to 16 characters or less and it should work. Post back in this thread to let me know if this sorts your issue out.
If it's a keyboard you're after then try Swype. Have a search for it. I too had a lot of sensitivity problems with the keyboard and it would take ages to type a simple email. Swype solved that. It's a lot less sensitive than the native keyboard and I used SIP to make it my default. In terms of landscape mode, try using Opera instead of IE (although Opera lacks flash). BSB Tweaks will handle the rest although I don't use it myself.
Trust me, stick with the phone and, with a few tweaks to have it running how you like it, you won't look back!
Just return the darn phone, smack it to the floor and trample it good, or learn to use it since you've bought it. Please save yourself over a high blood pressure leading to a stroke, my friend. It's only a phone.. (but then there's always iPhones for usability's sake, whatever it means)

Ok, you need to calm down a tad. Ok, the phone is not perfect. However, there is endless configurability for the phone. The best thing you could ever have done was to come to this site where there is a tweak for almost anything.
Sit down, fasten your seatbelt and take a look around. You need an open mind. The HD2 is no iphone. It's the iphone killer. Just needs a little tweaking that's all.
Alternatively, you could ditch it and join the bandwagon, I mean iphone!
Try Swype, best KB I hve used on a phone, my mate with an Iphone thought it was great and was going to look for it for the Iphone, once tweaked the HD2 is the best mob by far!
I was doubtful when I first had it like you say I thought I should have gone for the Iphone but now I am so happy with it
Windows is rubbish because of the HTC keyboard?? Ok...
Isnt the whole ADVANTAGE of winmo that if you dont like something you can change it?
The advantage of WinMo is the tweaking and Office Mobile My wife had a HTC Hero for 2 months and at the end she begged me to get her a new Windows Phone because the freaking Android won't open rich text format files (unfortunately in her job she is obliged to use rtf as standart file format) without great hassle even with all possible office replacements I cound find on the net. Not to speak of that, that even the enhanced HTC mail client for Android can't open messages that are sent from mail.bg (a very popular bulgarian web mail service). That was the end for Android
Hotmail mail on the HD1 was a pain, same on the HD2. Gmail is working perfectly though which is very annoying when like me, you use Hotmail on your desktop to access your Gmail emails...

First of all get rid of that IDIOTIC iPhone imitation keyboard and replace it with the divine fingerkeyboard from xda.
And then deactivate the utterly unpredictive xt9 "predictive" (more like vindictive) text input.
I did these steps and now I can FINALLY type.
An $800 phone and it takes a donationware sw keyboard to make it usable
Aloms - I had the same problem with my Ipod Touch in the beginning. Don't worry, you will get use to it. BTW HD2 keyboard is better especially in landscape
I will join this thread with my three questions.
I have converted to the dark side and bought iPhone 3GS after having gone through a lot of phones and OSes. I have given up on WinMo (using HTC Pro) basically because of 3 issues:
1. Phone app in the sense of its responsiveness. I mean, someone is calling - first 2 seconds the hardware buttons light up, next 2 seconds the phone starts to vibrate, next 2 seconds there is a sound. Is it happening on the HD2 too? How responsive is it? Plus does it have a good gsm reception? With my HTC Pro I had to keep on testing different radio roms and have not been satisfied ever...
2. When you use HD2 say 4-5 days or longer, does it slow down over time. I mean especially when you use contacts with 1000 entries etc, or is it instant?
3. On a brand new HD2 just charged, when you load in your 1000 contacts, does it have an instant search of a contact in the contacts app? Or an email address in the "To" section when you want to write an email?
Frankly speaking, HD2 looks very tempting, but I am afraid mainly of the 3 above areas and am thinking to wait for Windows 7 or something?
PS. HTC Pro is still with me, but in the drawer...

I've had a Diamond, a HD, and now a HD2 and I can say with 100% confidence that I never had 1 single problem with Hotmail. I've seen a very small number of users on here with issues and every single one of them has turned out to be user error.
I suggest the same in this instance as it works flawlessly when set up correctly, which 99.9% of users do.

>>>Experienced HD2 users are most welcome!<<<

Hey guys!
I am thinking of buying an HD2 and sell my N96; I know that some of my questions or maybe all are already somewhere but i guess not that they are in the same post; so here i go:
1---Can the sms be stored on MMC?
2---If the sms are on SIM/MMC/Phone; can they be copied/moved from one of these locations to another?
3---Can you create custom folders in sms? (you create a custom one and you move some sms to this folder) (i know HTCsms doesn't allow but I’ve read that default winmo messaging allows it, I’ve also read that HTCsms can be disabled but till now i didn't knew how to do all that!!!)
4---Does it really take a decade to load msgs? (in case you have hundreds of thousands) (what's the solution if yes please)
5---Does winmo have the "mark/unmark/mark all" option? (if you have to deal with a lot of files/sms/pics...??
6---Can you store the pics/videos taken on MMC?
7---Can these pics/videos be simply manipulated by Albums/categories...?
8---Can the contacts be copied/moved from SIM to phone memory and to MMC?
9---How many zoom X does the camera support? I know it's not so beautiful compared to Carl zeis's lenses of nokia, but can they be acceptable or practical?
10---What about the loudspeaker? Does it have acceptable quality?
11--- Internet and WIFI reception; are they good?
12---Radio reception, is it good?
13-User profiles (silent, meeting...) can they be timed for instance? (e.g. meeting profile timed to end automatically on 5 PM when i finish work)
14---Synch with pc and transferring data (any kind of data) with PC; is it good?
Finally some subjective questions that i care to know their answers:
A-If you want to compare messaging between Symbian (n96) to the one in Winmo6.5 (HD2) in terms of options available, details seen, customizability, moving/copying, loading speed, memory capacity... which one do you find better?
B-If you want to compare calling functions between Symbian (n96) to the one in Winmo6.5 (HD2) in terms of options available, details seen in log, customizability, call sound quality... which one do you find better?
C-Finally, did anyone of you guys bought an HD2 and dropped a Nokia N96 (or any N series) and regret it in the end?
What can you suggest me? (i wish i can try an HD2 for a long time but i can't)
Do i go for it? Or it's not worth it?
Thank you guys in advance

Its not going to make a Cyrus system bow to it's quality, and the bass response isn't going to upset the neighbours, but yes, its pretty similar to my Nokia E90s output, and is acceptable.

Depends on the quality of the signal and the distance to the aerial, and how far down in the priority list your account is with the provider. The HD2s messaging is pretty simple, but I find it easier to send MMSs inc. videos and photos compared to my E90. In terms of SMS arranging, you have 2 options, per message viewing and conversqtion mode. other than that, no other functions out of the box.
B-If you want to compare calling functions between Symbian (n96) to the one in Winmo6.5 (HD2) in terms of options available, details seen in log, customizability, call sound quality... which one do you find better?

The call log is better on the HD2 in my view, you can select a different number for a contact to the one they rang you on, great if they switch their mobile off!
Never had any issues with call quality, always been crystal clear.
I like the HD2s idea of having all the options on one screens (like loudspeaker, keypad etc) than in a menu.

To be honest, that choice is up to you. I've personally not looked back, but you may miss features between them.
Thanks man you're great!
You seem a Windows mobile fan! Are you??
Man, googling the net for windows mobile isn't encouraging; they place it as the worst OS including (RIM, iphone's, symbian, android, maemo...); do you think this is true?? Is it that bad?!? I will be glad to hear (or read ) your opinion! I had enough from reviews; i want to see real experience with this thing!
I really like to buy the HD2 but this OS thing makes me nervous!
Any other feedback is well welcomed too!
I like Windows Mobile for what it *can* do, not necessarily what it does do, if that makes sense?
I like symbian, probably on the basis that it is a logical, easy to use menu layout, i.e. if I want to access a GPS program, I open the main menu and press the GPS folder. If I want further options, I open the menu options.
In this respect, WinMo is very similar (you can arrange your start menu how you want it, even with the added option of changing icons etc).
Comparing this to the iPhone for instance (as every review seems to anyway), you open the main menu, then have to trawl through the pages of icons to find the app you want. Granted, you can move the icons around, but as far as I know, you need a PC or Mac and iTunes to do this (not sure if they've fixed this in OS4, I lost interest at 3G)
I have my HD2 doing an awful lot, set up as a wireless router for my laptop, playing games, internet browsing (I was blown away with the 800 x 332 res on the E90, but the HD2 is on the next rung or two up!), emails (have it checking 4 pop3 accounts, 1 imap and one exchange account, all at different intervals and automatically stopped at night), full GPS Sat-Nav and all the rest of the features I can reel off.
I find it incredibly stable (before anyone flames, the iPhone and E90 do need reboots now and again ) and very functional.
Yes WinMo is a bit creaky these days, but a lot of people forget it was designed to be a PDA with almost desktop features rather than a phone with PIM, and was designed in the late 90s, before Apple were even designing pretty Macs, Nokia had just released phone with polyphonic ringtones, and Palm was on its knees. None of them had such a complex functionality, and few even come close more than a decade later.
Android is getting there, but not quite, and RIM, good god, who designs a touch friendly interface for a non-touch phone? Did they not realise they made it even harder to navigate using their pearl?
My son had both the N95,N96 and now XM5800 in no way you can compare those Nokias to HD2 at least from my perspective. If you like to do customization you may never regret for getting this phone,at least I didnt. The only downside i found is the limited internal storge but I usually make sure to install my apps on the SC(MMC).
Most of the applications are a bit old but very professional,I like them much better than the Iphone which I owned over a period of 3 years.
However you seem to live in Lebanon as I also do,I live in Dowra suberebean area.I dont know if somehow I can be any help to you.
good Luck
Thank you rp-x1 you are a good man!
I think i will buy it after all; i will try it for some months or maybe years and will sell it if i didn't like it! I have nothing to loose (except couple of hundreds of dollars! )
Yes hagba i live in lebanon and you are Armenian as i see
I live in Jounieh and i work in Sin elfil so i'm not so far from you!
I will be so glad if you give me your mail address or even your phone number (in my work i can call freely so don't worry) (you can send me a private msg) or if you don't want; it's enough for me if you can tell me what are the "good"s and the "bad"s of this phone in your practical experience (not as in reviews when they mention for example that 64K colors are a downside of this phone! What do i care man?!? Am i counting them?!? )
Thanks a lot
im afraid I dont have time for a lengthy answer so ill keep it simple......
I came from an n95 and I dont miss it at all, maybe the camera a little if im honest.....
and winmo is not the worst os... in my opinion....
From all your question, one fundamental aspect is that 'can you customize your ROM?' I believe WinMo is the most customizable. Look at the HD2 ROM development thread. You can't ever do such things in iPhone or others.
Hey Life I PM-ed you my email.
