Disable automatic data connection - HD2 General

I don't want my phone to connect to 3G or EDGE automatically, I want to manually have to switch some slider or something to avoid getting huge bills. I tried installing "Touch X add 3G commmanager.cab" which in itself seemed to work, but I don't see any extra buttons anywhere...

Go to the settings tab and open "Wireless controls". You should see a new 3G item in there.

I don't... Perhaps because I'm using the Dutch version?

Did you do a restart after installing it? It doesn't automatically do that (or even suggest it), but it does need it.

Auto data connection disconnect

Helo my beloved community!
So, since the HD2 utilizes quite a lot of the data connection quite frequently (mostly for weather updates), it would be good to have an option to disconnet the data connection automatically. I presume that this is probably a registry hack. This feature can be found for example in TD2/TP2 Tools. I don't want to wait until HD2 Tolls (or Tweaks or something else) shows up (I hope it will quickly because its always something very welcome!), so maybe someone could answer quickly where to tamper with the registry to do that?
Thx in advance!

I've used an old tweak I found which seems to have done the trick, not really watched it closely enough to find out as not had time yet.

thanks for the reply but ive installed the cab and restarted but it doesnt seem to do anything
I just did the mentioned reg edits but it didn't seem to work. Then installed the cab to countercheck for my mistake. Didnt change the result, didn't work...
Even though I noticed the CacheTime setting existed from the start and was set to 600 (10 minutes).
SuspendResume original value was "~GPRS!"
Data charges are not so much the issue, I'm just concerned it might drain the battery quicker if the connection remains open permanently.

Try to do the regedits like this:
SuspendResume=GPRS_bye_if_device_off
CacheTime=5 (decimal)
VPNCacheTime=5 (decimal)
It works on my TD2, which to my knowledge has the same WM6.5 as the HD2 does. By the way, did You set the end call button long press to "terminate data connection"? If You did, then UNDO it

Right, You can't check it, as none of the HD2's hardware buttons are configurable Just ignore that question. Anyway, I think Ive figured it out to some point. It looks like the registry hack works whenever the phone connects to the web to for example browse the internet or update stocks. But it DOESN'T WORK if the phone connects to download weather updates. It looks like the Sense weather app is somehow preventing the data connection to shut down. But I think it only happens when automatic weather updates downloading is set.
hmm you do appear to be correct... now why is the weather app hanging onto the data session
Well, just tried setting both CacheTime and VPNCachetime and when checking mail I can confirm it works.
Thanks a lot! Mail checking schedule set up.

absolutely no idea I think someone smarter than us should try to find the answer. Ive already done a rather brief look around the registry and tried to find something that would get the weather app such privileges but with no success. Im thinking of addressing a new topic about that, so its more visible to the community

Twitter app doesn't close the data connection either
This is really annoying me. My battery was draining fast and could not find out why. Now I have found out that it is because I am constantly connected to Mobile Web on O2. I have tried terminating it but it starts again. Even after unchecking auto update for weather and twitter it still turns on and never off. I have mail set to download automatically but if i turn that off too then what is the point of having this phone and feature?
I have tried the setting in HD Tweak app to turn off data after 1 minute but noy joy.
Any help? Pleaseee.

Theres one more thing you should check out. The biggest connection-demander was always the NOT PROPPERLY CLOSED OPERA. If you use the opera browser, be sure to close it NOT with the X in the upper right corner, but through Opera Menu->exit function. If you close it with X, it only goes minimized and does not shut down the connection. Even if you close it, because opera is still running, after some time it will want to refresh a page and conect again. Thats why you have the imression that the phone connects by itsself. Thats not the phone, its opera

Also as stated, weather, opera etc will keep your data connection active...so end task and it should shut down a few seconds later.

I have installed a shortcut to taskmgr in my quicklinks - so if i see something constantly running i end task...it shuts it down rather than minimising it which is what happens when you hit the little X in most cases. The taskmgr tip is in the sticky at the top of the page.

Yes I know what you mean but you can't kill the weather app or twitter in this fashion as they run within Sense itsself. Besides, killing processes is not the point. The point is to have an automatic data disconnection, so you dont have to do or kill anything

This is the one that I use as well. Keep in mind that it doesn't show up under programs if you do install it. It shows up in Connections... Also after installing it, it doesn't ask you to restart, but you have to for it to show up in the Connections menu.
It adds it Start->Settings->Menu at the bottom-> All Settings-> Connections. If you Long press it and select "Move to Top, it will throw it into the Start menu, but you can't make a quick link to it. But at least it can be right there when you hit the Start link at the top. It's labeled as "Wifi Internet Sharing".

Android - Data Disconnect

Hi guys
I've just installed Android on my HD2, with OzDroid and the mattc build. On Windows installs I always found and installed a 'DataDisconnect' shortcut to my home screen, so with 1 tap I can stop any mobileweb or other data connections currently active.
Can anyone tell me how to do this on Android, as I've been playing with it and can't figure it?

If you are talking specifically about turning the 3g/2g data connection off all you have to do is hold down the end(red button) and choose the data disconnect option....if you are referring to programs like "nodata" under windows that stop ALL data until you manually re-enable it but don't put the phone into full fledged airplane mode then the options others are giving you should put you in right area.
"apn on/off widget" from market. simle and perfect

[Q] remove Cell standby

On the Nook in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=888216
user xboxexpert managed to unload the phone tools on the nook and stop the nook from searching for a cell network. Since a few of us are off contract, I'd love to be able to do the same on my Tab. So I tried the same, renaming the files. It didn't work. The Tab ended up in an infinite loop of trying to restart the phone when phone.apk no longer existed. I didn't dare try restarting after renaming it when it was all I could do to get the Tab stable again without infinite app crashes slowing it down.
I like to use a bluetooth keyboard at work and airplane mode disables bluetooth, so no deal there. So does anyone have an idea on how we can disable the wireless network without being in Airplane mode?
I have the same question.... I want to use my tab Wifi only... anyone find a solution?
You can switch WiFi ob when in airplane mode.
Regards,
Dave
is there a permanent solution for it?
You can go into Phone Info via *#*#4636#*#* (or create an Anycut shortcut to Phone Info, under Activites) and switch the radio off there at the bottom of the page.

I suppose if I really want to do this then I need to get the dialer working? It seems kind of roundabout, I'm trying to disable the mobile network and phone options, but in order to do that I need to make it more like a phone first? I say that because I tried Anycut and under Activities there was no "Phone Info" activity. Thanks for the thought Hairy.
This is on a stock rooted T-mobile Tab, that I'm not planning to flash just yet. Maybe when Cyanogen is in a later beta. I'm just not that deep into hacking my devices, and while I appreciate people that do I just have other priorities.

Must be a ROM issue as I'm on JM6 and the Phone Info option is there on Anycut. I went through this myself for the same reasons, so good luck

[Q] Defy+ - How to bypass Motoblur

I have googled a ton, but cannot see how to bypass Motoblur setup on the Defy+
Other Motorolas can be bypassed using Alt-E Alt-E NOBLUR but the Defy+ has no Alt key.
I don't want to root / apply custom mod as these are company phones shared amongst staff.
Chose the Defy+ as they have better antenna and are water/dust resistant. (These phones are going to Aussie outback).
If anyone has instructions or a work around, be much appreciated.

Hi Buddy,
The easiest way to "bypass" the Motoblur setup is to prevent it from connecting to the net.
To do this, have an non-activated SIM card, so the device cannot connect to server via 3G.
Then, it is simply the matter of selecting "No Data Plan" and skipping through the steps.
However, this will NOT increase performance significantly, if you are trying to maintain the stock firmware.
Australian Telstra Defy+ Motoblur setups are easily avoidable, if you follow the steps above.
Good Luck,
neiljain
Makes sense... Never thought to try that.
Main reason I want it bypassed is that these handsets will be shared amongst a pool of users, so Motoblur makes no sense. (And would be a pain to administer).
However tried this - I just said no data plan, but now it's prompting me for a WiFi connection and I can't proceed. (Can't hit Next without selecting "Setup WiFi" If I select it, I cant proceed without joining to WiFi network.
Boohoo.

Neither of the above work.
Choosing no data plan then insists I connect to a WiFi network and won't let me proceed without setting one.
Hitting menu key, I only see Emergency call, Set up APN, Set up WiFi and IMEI.

Hi Buddy,
I know that you really want to avoid rooting and installing a custom rom.
However, can I suggest you to flash an alternative SBF that allows you to skip Motoblur.
It will look exactly the same, except for any service provider applications.
If you have the Telstra Defy+ handset, I can recommend you a FW that works.
Thanks,
neiljain
Think you are right. Could you mail the FW link to me? sss _at micromine.com

Hi Buddy,
I have personally used the Retail Taiwanese firmware which works with Telstra. I have not tested 3G though as I don't need it.
Note that if you do flash the new firmware, there is no way as far I know to restore it back to the original firmware. Also, the phone warrantee will become void. If you still want to proceed, the link for the firmware is http://bit.ly/QXwNEw. You will need to flash it using RSD Lite in bootloader mode.
I posted the link on XDA for other people to get the link

Thanks, I went ahead and activated with a generic support email account we use.
Didn't really want to custom mod it, last thing I need is people with issues whilst on critical support calls with our clients.
BTW - Motoblur doesn't like activating through a SQUID content filter proxy either
(Had to either mod the filter or use phone network to activate.)

Well, if anyone is still using Defys in 2017... This may be of interest.
I had this same problem. The Defy plus, MB526, ROM presents the Swype keyboard using the Menu key at the MotoBlur screen. This stopped me and everyone else who has tried, entering the Motoblur Bypass sequence, as there is no ALT key. There may be a Swype sequence, but I couldn't find it, though I did get into something somehow, as I got a message "Try again" at one point. I tried for a while, as I'm not one to give up.
In the end I figured out a way...
Forget the Swype keyboard. You'll need a SIM installed, but it doesn't have to be active. An old one is ok. Then do this:
At the Motoblur activation screen, proceed like this:
Start > Next > Next => "Data Settings"
Select "No Data plan"
Next => "Connection needed"
Select "Setup a Wi-Fi connection", Next => Wi-Fi screen.
Click Wi-Fi enable check box to turn on Wi-Fi.
Choose "Add Wi-Fi network"
A Data entry screen will appear, including Network SSID textbox. Don't bother entering anything.
Long Tap in the textbox. " [Edit Text] Input method" should appear.
Tap Input method, select "Multi-touch keyboard".
Voila! Swype keyboard disabled!
Now press Back > Back > Back until you return to the "Welcome to MOTOBLUR" screen.
Now Long Tap the Menu key (4 squares, bottom left)
The normal Multi-touch keyboard should appear. Yay!
Now proceed with the Alt-E, Alt-E, BLUROFF sequence as in earlier posts.
After the last F, there is a bit of a delay. Then, you should be in!
Cheers.
