not receiving calls in force EVDO or 1x mode - Hero CDMA General

hey there just wanted to share my experience for those who might have the same problem. I tried using force EVDO mode (default is hybrid) and could no longer receive calls or text until i called someone. (calling out worked). I also read that someone had the same problem in force 1x mode. Just a heads up since it took me a while to figure out what was wrong. Not sure if others have had this problem and couldnt find it in any searches.

I had the same issue withing the first 30 days of release and actually returned two non Google branded phones. Tech support was unable to figure out why i was not receiving calls and advised me to return them. They tried rebuilding my account, re-provisioning ect. I only figured out what was going on after i was unable to get a call on the third phone immediately after changing the setting to evdo only. that was november 2nd and i have not had any issues since.

still happens on google branded phones. I too did the whole reprovisioning, factory reset, nandroid restores, and finally got a new phone. Tech support does not know about this problem.

i searched this a while back, when i got a "web page unavailable error" in the browser when i was trying to browse the internet during a call.
basically what i found out (google searching) is that our phones send calls and texts over the 1x data network. and the phone is unable to connect to both evdo and 1x at the same time.
that's why every time you send a text it drops down to 1x for a second and when you are in a call you cant use the internet.
some phones can do it but the sprint hero cannot.
i'll try to find the link to the article i was reading, but you can find it by searching google.
EDIT:
http://androidforums.com/sprint/10700-call-surfing-same-time-possible-not.html
here is just one post from another forum.
that's why you have to leave that setting on hybrid, because in order to send calls/texts the phone has to switch networks.
hope this helps

Just to clear something up
Google branded or not its the same damn phone. absolutly nothing different between the two besides the branding
And yes, CDMA cannot connect to data while on a call but I thought text could be sent through EVDO. Ive d/l files quite a bit and when I recieve a text it countinues to download with what no interference.
I see that as a Sprint issue, or if the phone is defective in some way. If anyone is experiance this issue, try to load a custom rom or if you are on one flash the RUU and if that doesnt help contact Sprint.

there are differences, i have a htc branded phone and it came with 1.29 firmware. the google branded phones now have the 1.56 firmware, as they do not make the htc branded phones anymore. there are probably more differences also...

the question is not if you can send texts and download files at the same time, its if you can receive calls/texts while locked out of the 1x network.

its not really a issue, unless they advertised that you could call be on a call and surf the web (which they do not) or if they advised you to change the setting in question from hybrid to EVDO. (which they do not)

CDMA 3G doesn't currently support receiving text or calls in EVDO.
EVDO is used for data only.
Every time you call or send/recieve a text, it switches to 1X, no matter what.
Hence, why you are able to recieve them when calling voicemail.
GSM phones have this capability, and while technically CDMA can, no CDMA carrier has the ability active(it's a network issue).
Forcing EV is good if you want uninterrupted data, but to recieve any calls or texts you will need to either dial out, or switch to a hybrid/1x mode.
Fact.

just got off the chat with sprint, they said, (after a long pause)
12/29/2009 11:53:58PM ME: "just wondering"
12/29/2009 11:57:09PM Agent (Myquan): "I do apologize but the option to place a call and browse the web at the same time, this is not one of the options provided on the sprint network, I do apologize for this inconvenience."
12/29/2009 11:57:43PM Agent (Myquan): "This option may possibly be available in the near future."
12/29/2009 11:58:13PM ME: "will my hero support this?"
12/29/2009 11:59:32PM Agent (Myquan): "Absolutely! if we receive a software upgrade for htc phones allowing this feature this will be available for your Hero."
12/29/2009 11:59:50PM ME: "sweet"

4G supports it.
Hero isn't a 4G phone.
So unless they decide to expand their 3G to allow it to do this, that's a no.

Enable calls while on EVDO

Question for you guys,
I never noticed until my girlfriend tried to call me. I was streaming videos on youtube on my touch from Telus mobility and my line was just ringing, not going to my phone. Is there anyone that knows how to enable this? I tried looking online but codes for other phones like the apache dont work.
Thanks,
e
I was trying it out on my Bell HTC touch and it works fine (was on IE browsing and called my cell and it came through)
How exactly are you viewing the YT videos? Could be the application your using.
Im using TCPMP and flash media bundle. Found it on PPCGeeks
I don't think that the CDMA Touch can handle concurrent voice & data radios.
Meaning - it is either one or the other.
If you are browsing the internet, and a call comes through, it will drop the data radio and enable voice. Your example of the browsing and a call coming through is an example of this.
Try talking on the phone and then surfing to a new site in PIE. You can't.

100% true, it can do 1 or the other not both
definetly not true...my bell htc touch works while surfing the net, it just switches from the EVDO network to the 1X, and it doesnt just keep ringing...so im not sure about sprint but the bell service allows for them to b working at the same time...
good luck

NOT TRUE AT ALL! I confirmed (as you can see in my post above) that it receives calls even if your in between a data session.
I know on regular 1x phones they are not able to do this but this is a feature of EV-DO where it allows a phone call to come in even while surfing or using data.
To the OP, are you in 1x data mode or ev-do?
K so ive been testing it, while surfing and actually going through links and receiving a call they dont go through as well as streaming. But if Im on a page and not doing anything but reading whats on the page the call comes through. And I am on Ev-DO
From what I understand, if and when Sprint/Bell/Telus upgrades the rom to support EVDO Rev.A, then you can have voice and data concurrently. I find when I am surfing, it really depends on the timing of the call on whether it rings or not. If you are actively downloading data (streaming, accessing a page), then the phone will not ring. If you are just reading/viewing a page after it has fully downloaded, then your phone will ring.
Hi Guys,
I got the Telus HTC Touch about a week ago, and I went through the same thing. I called Telus's tech support as well as HTC's, I kept getting the run around; Telus was telling me it's an HTC issue, and HTC telling me it's Telus's issue, until I finally spoke to an admin in Telus' tech dept and he told me it's a know issue that will not be fixed anytime soon.
The only time this happens is when the data connection is "active" i.e. it's downloading something, so if you are streaming, the call will never go through to the phone, it will go the voice mail and your won't get a missed call notice on the phone. If browsing the net, and IE has finished loading the page, the data connection is "idle" and the call will go through.
I have read on a forum that there is a way to fix this by accessing the Data Programming screen using ##8323# and chaging the priority to voice from the default data priority, but I was not ableto access that with my phone.
I am still hoping to find a hack for this; for now I call-forward my HTC to my Blackberry when I know I will be using the internet heavily so I won't miss any calls.
TRY ##DDTM# thats how its done on my sprint touch

Ludester - can you try this again?
I know that if you are surfing and a call comes through - you can get the call and answer it. That's what I said in my reply. That's because the phone drops the data connection and enteres the voice connection. If you jump back to PIE - then your previous cached page pops up.
But, try calling your handset from your home phone. Answer it. Leave the line open. (you may want to stand a few feet away from your landline to avoid feeback).
Now, while you have an active voice connectoin from home phone to cell phone, Open PIE and try and start browsing to a new page not cached.
Does it give you a message?
My understanding is that Rev0 doesnt do simultaneous voice and data. Actually i dont think RevA will either, although capable by technology, Sprint's implimentation wont allow it. Only way to get voice and data simultaneous right now is use HSDPA on GSM it does both at the same time currently.
I would love to have concurrent voice and data. I just don't think Rev0 has that feature and don't believ ewe will see Sprint's implementation of this feature through the RevA update either. I surely hope to be proven wrong on this - because that is indeed a desired state for me.
just yesterday i tried going to the other way... while on a call, i tried to access live search to map an address. the call was disconnected.
today i tried to launch internet explorer while on a call and i get a message to 'end the current call... blah, blah'
I'm on Bell and I was streaming music to my phone today and a call rang through no problem.

Same here on Bell.
I was streaming music on EVDO network. When I called my Touch, it started to ring. At that moment music streaming stopped and Touch switched to 1X network. When I ended this conversation, Touch switched back to EVDO and music streaming resumed automatically.

For voice as priority should it be enabled or disabled? Sprint Touch.
i believe that all issues with cellphone internet blocking or being disabled when one recieve a call is purely an issue
with old and poor quality equipment of the cellphone operator in the area

You have to call, on a telus touch, ##778 and you gotta have your MSL code to edit things... But I haven't found anywhere that priority you're talking about...
I thought EVDO Rev 0 (like the one Telus is using for now) cannot handle data and voice connection at the same time... It is different for EVDO Rev.A, I've seen that on wiki I think
I had this problem until I realized I had changed my settings to "Force HDR" mode which only took advantage of EVDO.
I changed it back to Automatic switching (at the expense of battery life, however) and tested it out by running Sprint TV and having another phone call and it worked.
I checked the ##DDTM# and it was already disabled.
I've had the same issues... including the girlfriend being pissed off because her calls always went to VM. The problem is related to what network you're using.
The link below explains in details what networks allow both data and voice at the same time:
http://support.wmwifirouter.com/knowledge/KB0802013/
This should be all you guys need.

data connect = incoming calls straight to VM

so i just noticed this today (i have the leaked ROM installed) that when i am using the web or checking my email if someone calls they go straight to my voice mail -- i haven't had the phone long enough to know if this is how it is supposed to be or not. Is there a way to get to cancel the data connection and show me someone is calling?

no, not really, at least not for those of us who use push email, since it maintains a constant data connection to the exchange server

well i read through that and tried what they mentioned but i couldn't get it to drop the data when a call came in.
btw, i'm on Sprint, and no EVDO where i am at so only 1x.
but as i mention in the thread
"i believe that all issues with cellphone internet blocking or being disabled when one recieve a call is purely an issue
with old and poor quality equipment of the cellphone operator in the area"
many old gsm and aparently american cellphone networks too
suffer from not being able to handle both network and calls at the same time
it's an issue in the operator end not the phones
yeah after three emails with sprint (i think most of their CS people are brain dead) they finally told me that it is how it works, no way around it.
one told me that calls go to voice mail when you don't have enough signal -- totally irrelevent to this issue
one told me it was a technical problem with my phone and said i should bring it to a sprint store to get a tech to look at it
and finally after *****ed at them sayint that people (that i assume) don't work for sprint know more about this (thanks Rudegar for your responces) then they do, they finally just came out and said that, yeah this is how it is and there isn't anyway around it.
it seems that this is a better place to get answers then emailing sprint --- although i should have realized that from the beginning, i won't make that mistake again.
well i guess your question has been answered, but figure id add my 2 cents...
it works like this only in EV-DO areas not on 1x....
my ring through works perfectly fine when a call or text comes in, it discconects allows me to do what i want, then it automatically reconnects back to data..

Is it Possible to Force the Hero to Roam

Any way to accomplish this?
I need this BAD too! Reception at work is god awfull. Please help! SOS
What does your user name mean? Natural light or natty boh light?
Please someone make an app to turn on/off roaming; I'm willing to pay money for it (and I'm sure a lot of people are willing to do so too).......
LOL if it were this easy.......
Roaming is of no use to me but I always like to look in to issues that people are having. I grep'd what code we have available to us for our phones and the only two options I came across were:
ro.com.android.dataroaming = true
xml: name="sync_while_roaming">false
So all I can tell you is that I can control whether it roams or not (which can also be easily changed in our settings menu) but not to force it to roam. I googled if it was possible in android at all and couldn't find any results.
Do you know what towers are around you or what towers we can roam on? I wonder if it would be possible to hack in a verizon rom dump from eris and force it to roam on their towers. However that won't allow you to come back to Sprint. And Sprint has been known to cancel contracts of people who roam too much.
has anyone tried to update the PRL to a verizon PRL?? I tried it, but i'm not sure how successful it was, as both Sprint and Verizon signals are strong in my area.. Put the PRL on the SD card and use ##PRL# to update it..

The towers around me are Verizon towers. Yeah, I undestand that (Sprint has been known to cancel contracts of people who roam too much) and I don't want to Roam all the time, just here at work. The phone is mostly on roaming while at work but is is continually searching for a Sprint tower and that drains the battery so fast! The only workaround for me is to set the phone to airplane mode until about the last three hours of work but then even when the phone is turned on it constantly tries to switch to a very weak sprint signal and I keep losing connection just about every 2 or 3 minutes, so using the phone in work is practically useless for me right now
@mroneeyedboh: Natural Light. My ode to cheap beer.
One area I frequent has a weak Sprint signal, and a "decent" Verizon signal. It would take "excessive" roaming, for 3 consecutive months for Sprint to flag you for abuse. So you have some breathing room. I remember my G1 had an option to manually select the network available. However, I'm not entirely sure that having a network option isn't just a customary feature of a GSM device, and not Android specifically, since its obviously compatible world wide.
I have the same exact situation at work where I get no signal on sprint but it tries to find it draining the battery and preventing it from using the very good verizon signal. I had to force it to EVDO only just to be able to check my gmail and confirm my XDA forum registration since webmail is blocked at work. This the kind of thing I bought this phone for to always have access to my email. Switching to EVDO Only mode is really cumbersome and annoying, and still gives a bad although slightly better signal. If I forget to switch it back to allow 1x Data, I can't use SMS and when I call sprint it hangs up immediately unless I switch it back on. I would use very minimal time data and voice roaming compared to my outside of building data and voice use as I'm sure is the case for most people with bad sprint coverage inside buildings.

There is a widget in the market to switch 3g on and off. can't remember the name.
Anyone who's more knowledgeable than me, can please tell me if by changing anything in the ## menus, (like ##diag# or ##data#), can we force the phone to roam? (I'm asking because I just got the MSL number out of my device and now can change any of those settings).

Sorry, can't help you. I interested in this thread, so I'm bumping it.
This sounds like something the CDMA radio manages. I'm not familiar with the lower level processes and configurations on Android, but this might be part of a closed source process. I don't know if Android is supposed to have such a thing?
You could try setting the Home SID/NID to the SID/NID of the tower where you work, and then set the phone to Sprint Only. This in theory should force the phone to stay on the roaming tower, but I'm not sure if this will override the PRL. Probably not.
Subscribing... I would give anything for this. I got this shiny new hero and can't use it at my house. It was so awesome that I kept it. A friend can sit next to me on verizon and get almost a full signal.
I have tried the GV + Sipsorcery + sipdroid thing to make and receive calls over wifi but it is so unreliable. If I could just switch to use the roaming verizon tower by my house I could justify keeping this thing.
I am new to android development, but not new to development, linux, or java. So I will probably investigate this more.

Apart from force roaming does anyone know of an app that would let you manually select your towers (or a built in way to do it).
I don't want to force roaming actually, I just want to switch to the verizon tower near my house so I can use my phone at home. I don't want to do it anywhere else. Just once instance.
I had a junk nokia a long time ago and it even had an app that let you manually select your tower and gave me all the serial/id info about it. What is the next closest think on android for this?

That is, by definition, force roaming.
Oh, you're right, but what I meant was that I don't want to be anywhere and kick myself off the sprint towers onto any other tower using an app or setting. I just meant in one location I would like to switch to a defined tower. There is a big difference between an app that lets you select your network towers and another that forces your phone off of sprint onto any roaming tower. But thanks for a helpful post.
As far as the CDMA hero goes, is there anything helpful in the radio updates that might lead to controlling the network selection? I am wrapping some projects up this week and I do not care to dig through the source to see if a quick app is possible.
I'm pretty sure you should NOT mess with the radio...

Or, you could call customer care, and tell them that you get no service at home, and require an AIRAVE. They sent me one free, and waived the 4.99 month charge. Just explain to them, you need your phone, you have small kids or whatever, you need service in your home.
AIRAVE is the best thing ever. I went from no service in my house, to 5 bars at all times, who cares if its only 1X, I can still make and receive calls, and have WiFi for my data needs.

[Q] Problem with picture text messaging

Went to a sprint store (appointment) and they told me that when I am connected via wifi at home, it will not be able to receive text notification and will not be able to see my picture (I have the download button showing but will not open the picture when I click on it). So this means, that when I have wifi connection at home, that disables the 3G connection that I have thus not seeing the Sprint's server where the text are delivered. Aren't the text messages via the 3G or 4G connectivity on the phone. So my wifi connection will not allow the 3G connection on the phone. I tested sending a picture message from my Epic to my Tilt2 (AT&T) windows phone with the same wifi connection and I get the notification and I have to click on the icon to display the picture with no problem. But the epic as I have explained earlier, will give me no notification, it gives me a download button when I open up the text message - but will not do anything at all - not opening the picture. when I disable my wifi - no problem
I need to test this, because if it's true thats bull****, I have Wifi at home on all the time. Heck if Sprint is going to start capping the unlimited plans, why force us to use 3G at all times when there's wifi available? testing this...
yea you're correct, it shows the button if you go into the messages, but it wont notify or let you download it, it says failed. Thats garbage.
Thanks Six-Duece and so I am not the only one. Somehow, if you are connected via wifi, the 3G or even 4G (data connection) is somehow disabled.
Thanks once again.. I am going to return my phone since I am still within the 30-days.
and I notieced even here in Vegas that 4G connection is so flaky and always reverts back to 3G and I pay $10 for something that is not used.
Maybe one day, when 4G connectivitiy is much more stable, then the $120/yr would be worth it. $120 is not joke nowadays
This is a problem for me also. People have told me it has something to do with sprint/android users, which I dont see how thats the case when I have been with sprint for over 3 years now and this is the only phone that has happened to me on.
I have owned the HTC EVO, Touch Pro, Touch Diamond, and Palm Pre on Sprint's network and non had made me turn wifi off in order to recieve pictures. (HTC EVO = Android device)..
Also it seems to let me SEND pictures with wifi on just not RECIEVE.. It sucks & hope someone will figure out a way to get by this non-sense.
yea this could be a deal breaker for me, I think I will weigh my options and decide if I want to keep hanging on to this or say screw it. It bothers me because it makes no sense.
Typically the way things works is like this, calls and text go over the voice network (or on 1x), so you can be disconnected from 3G and still send and receive plain sms.
Now MMS are sent and received (downloaded) over the data network, either 1xrtt or 3G EVDO. Whether you're on wifi or not shouldn't matter as long as you're connected to the cell network.
The issue with the Epic seems to be that if you're connected to wifi it seems to disconnect from the data network (either to save battery or for some other reason INSTEAD OF KEEPING A DORMANT CONNECTION TO THE DATA NETWORK) and as such MMS can't be downloaded or fail to.
Now I don't receive a lot of MMS so I've never really been affected by this enough to annoy me but I can say that other Sprint phones I've had with wifi do receive MMS even on wifi because I assume they keep a dormant connection to the 3G network.
Either way, for heavy MMS folks who conncet to wifi a lot this must be annoying.
Just one more bug we need to alert Samsung and Sprint to for a furure fix. It might be a bug or the phone was just designed that way for some reason.
i will have to try that this is bs
if they wont do anything i may have to get an evo instead but i wish not to have to
The reason I brought this up, is because I connect wifi most of the time (at work and at home), and family sends a lot of picture messages. So this is a big issue for me especially since you don't receive any notification.
Maybe if they fix this issue then I might go back, since I am still in the 30-day return guarantee. I will be monitoring this thread.
Thanks for all for testing and confirming my problem.
Hi,
Has anybody of you who had the same problem as I did, has this issue been addressed and fixed now..
Thank you for taking the time to respond back
I just noticed that my mms pictures are now downloading when on wifi. Maybe Sprint quietly fixed this bug? Anyone else notice the change?

This is a problem for me also. People have told me it has something to do with sprint/android users, which I dont see how thats the case when I have been with sprint for over 3 years now and this is the only phone that has happened to me on.
I have owned the HTC EVO, Touch Pro, Touch Diamond, and Palm Pre on Sprint's network and non had made me turn wifi off in order to recieve pictures. (HTC EVO = Android device)..
Also it seems to let me SEND pictures with wifi on just not RECIEVE.. It sucks & hope someone will figure out a way to get by this non-sense.

It was a problem with the hero. Its not exclusive to theepic. Apparently it has something to do with adroid

No problems here. Just tested on my epic, wifes Evo, and my old Hero. Everythings working fine over wifi regarding mms. I wilk say tho that the Hero and Evo received the mms withing a minute, while my Epic didnt for about 8 minutes.

New MMS problem arising

Since the last two or three updates within CM builds, I cannot receive MMS from my friend on the sprint network, I am on Tmobile.
I simply receive the message with an attachment that cannot be downloaded. every time I click the download button it tries to retrieve the file and fails
I can receive MMS from myself and it hasn't solved the problem
the apns seem like they have had no direct changes, is something to do with my friends phone more likely or is there a cause for this? tomorrow I will try to have someone on tmobile send me an mms to see if results are different.
need some kind of answer!!! preeeezee
recently gathered info leads me to the suggestion that it is 2.3.4 itself causing this issue, as there is a whole new box called "APN Protocol" in our APN edit menu. Haven't ascertained if there is an actual fix besides downgrading to an older build.
I am having this same exact problem. I know you haven't gotten and answer and it's been a while since you posted on this topic but i didn't want to get yelled at to "use the search feature"
no one seems to have the answer. i get mms from my sister (blackberry) and mom on Verizon. (my mom doesn't even have a smart phone) but my girlfriend with her blackberry on sprint wont come through. It shows the "download" button and it fails every time i click on it.
I haven't tried iphone users yet but seems the problem is carrier specific with my phone not playing nice with others.
I am running the latest cm7 nightly build on mytouch 3g slide from t-mobile. And using the stock message app to send and receive.
(please don't tell me to use handcent or anything of the sort, i'd like an answer to THIS problem, not just a work around)
please someone help!??
Did you try changing the User Agent in the messaging app settings and seeing if it helped?
yeah, actually tried them all. I believe thats only for sending mms so the receiving phone thinks its coming form another type of device. as far as receiving mms, no luck man
on 2.3.4 ive narrowed it down to I cannot receive MMS messages from iPhones on att or verizon. Anyone else who sends me one I am able to download.
Going back to rom in my signature
hmmm, interesting cause i can verify i get from Verizon but not Sprint. And we both have t-mobile, as far as i can see
Just wish the problem was more uniform so that it would be easier to narrow down the problem
im having the same problem with SIMPLE Mobile. it seems i can send to myself and recieve from ALL GSM carriers but CDMA carriers IE. sprint, verizon, metro pcs, do not work i can click download button till im blue in the face and they wont download...any ideas??
I fixed it, or rather it fixed itself. I backed up angry birds data (the only data that matters, otherwise my girlfriend yells at me that she has to start all over AGAIN lol) using titanium. I did a full wipe, data, davlik and cache. Then installed (at the time) the latest nightly, cm7 nightly 78. Automagically fixed, at least the people I tested (including my girlfriends, which was the initial problem) restored angry birds data and donezo. Tell me if it works for you.
