thats a great idea! perhaps even a stickie once we get more and more prl files

2 questions -
1) How do I know which PRL I'm currently running (I'm using Freshrom 1.0)
2) where do I put this PRL file (assuming its newer than what I currently have)?
Thanks, TL

you can check the PRL in setting-->about phone-->status
and
to apply the prl manually you have to put it at the root of your SD card and go to the phone pad. type in ##PRL# i believe, it will ask for your MSL( hope you have it ) then you can apply the prl file you put in the root of your SD.

MSL!?
MSL?
From that prompt on the keypad it will search the root of the caRD to install the PRL?
Loving you in advance...

If your Hero is on Sprint's network legitimately then you can just do Settings < About Phone < System Updates and get the PRL directly from Sprint. If your Hero isn't on the network legitimately then you should already know how to do this.

Well not really.
You assume that because I rooted my phone and flashed a ROM that I am smarter than I really am..

No... I assume that if you did an MEID swap from another phone then you would know how to do this. If you didn't do an MEID swap to clone your Hero from another phone then you are legitimately on Sprint's network and you can just do a PRL update like a normal user. Having root or a custom rom doesn't affect it.

Nice.
Have I told you I love you today?

HTC Hero Telus - BASICS

Ok, got my HTC Hero Telus, but am kind of overwhelmed by the root and terms used.
Can somenoe just briefly fill me in, what does ROM actually mean and do?
I've been searcing the forums, and found a bunch of updates for RADIO on the Hero, what is this for? What are these updates for?
What's best way to start rooting, and how to learn all these ROMs, Radio, and other terms?
THANKS!
Welcome to XDA!
A ROM is the operating system on the phone. It's called ROM because it gets installed to the phone's "Read Only Memory." There are custom ROMs to replace the stock one, you'll find those in the Hero Android Development forum. This forum also has plenty of posts about how to root/flash your phone.
The radio is the firmware that goes into the phone's radio device. Generally it's best to have the latest radio version installed, currently it's the JU version found in the Official Radio ROMs link in the Hero Android Development forum.
As far as the Telus Hero itself is concerned, there are a couple threads about it in the "Hero General" and "Hero Q&A" forums. Any common problem should be tackled in one of those threads. I think I was the first one to root a Telus Hero (unless someone kept quiet about it) so I've been through just about every Telus-specific issue that has arisen. If you go through those threads and still have questions, I'll be happy to help... but please look through the forums first.
EDIT: Start on page 2 of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576826
Thanks for the response Craig, you definitely cleared it up for me.
I'm using the TELUS hero on AT&T, so is there anything different regards the root and radio update process because I'm on AT&T?

That shouldn't make a difference to the radio/root flashing process... However, I have no idea what it'll take to put an AT&T SIM card in a Telus Hero. I know it can be done, I just don't know the steps since I'm using mine on Telus.
Also, a lot of the issues that show up in that thread I linked you to are Telus-specific, so that might not help you as much as I originally hoped.
Good luck!

Using the phone on AT&T is really simple. Nothing like the complicated steps you have to do to goldcard/downgrade/root the phone. I'm using a white Telus Hero on AT&T, and didn't have any problems.
One question, though. How'd you buy it? If you bought it "unlocked" from a website like ImportGSM, then all you have to do is open the back of your old phone, take out the SIM card, and put it in the Hero. If you bought it on eBay, had somebody in Canada ship it to you, or bought it yourself from a Telus store/Best Buy/etc., then you need to unlock it first. You can get the unlock code from a number of websites, thought you'll have to pay for it. Then put your SIM card in as above and the phone will prompt you for it. After you put in the code, you're good to go!
If you want to use the internet or MMS, then there's actually one more step. You have to put in the APN settings, which tell the phone how to access the network. They can be found in the forum somewhere or by Googling for "AT&T APN".
Ya I'm using it on AT&T works fine, but I'm trying to root it but not having any luck!

Oh, ok! Sorry, I can't help you there. I'm waiting till I've got some sort of backup of the firmware that came on the phone (Or some other official upgrade meant for the North American model) before going through the process to root the phone & load a custom ROM. Just a personal preference

nTelos PRL Problems

I ran into a problem when I flashed DamageControl 2.0r2 and did the PRI fix. All of the sudden, my phone started saying Cellular South, and I'm on PRL 10003. Does anyone have the nTelos 22801?

Yeah I have ntelos. What was your pri before the fix? As we have ntelos, it wasn't necessary to flash the fix. I actually tried to force it to change pri to see if it would change and it did not. I'm on prl 12800

I think my PRI before the fix was 1.68_003. I'm now at PRL 1.84_013. The good news is I managed to find someone with both the 12800 and 12801 PRLs. I've tried the 12801, gonna try 12800 next. But do you think you could PM me your ##DATA# settings? I think I've got a copy of the User Name settings, but I need the Advanced settings (specifically, MCC, MNC, LBS PDE IP and port, HOME SID/NID).
So, I've got the PRLs, Looking for the ##DATA# settings, any other settings I should look at?
And for those (other) N00bs out there (including myself in this one):
The following is taken from Tweakhound.com, but I think it applies as much, or more, to phones as computers (comments in brackets are mine)-
"If you're gonna tweak you gotta be a Geek." (didn't know I was a poet did ya?!) This means:
-You know how to recover from problems. Backup, Backup, Backup, Backup
-You should understand the effect a tweak will have before you do it. (Google)[!!!!!!!]
-The "G" in Geek stands for "Grownup". You take responsibility for your actions, don't whine at me when you ignore the above two points.[and brick your phone]
If you haven't got this resolved, I've got PRLs 22800 and 22802, will either of these work?
ntelos prl
Do you have a copy of the ntelos 22802 prl that you could share with me? Thank you!
May i have a copy of the 22802 prl as well please. also the ##DATA# settings for ntelos would be awsome thanks
Could any of you guys point me in the right direction to flashing my current sprint branded android over to an existing ntelos account?
ntelos prl
yeah would love to have the 22802 prl file for ntelos if anyone has it. cant find it anywhere thanks.

Questions about Mytouch unlocked OTA

So currently I am using my mytouch 3g (Original) unlocked on At-t and without a dataplan. When T-mobile decides to roll out the 2.2 update, how would I go about getting it? Would they make it available online to install manually (without rooting)? Or would I need to grab a T-mobile sim and download it that way. Also if I used the latter route and used someone else's sim, would they need to have a dataplan for me to download it? Or would my mytouch still detect the update and download it for me without a data-plan.
no data plan is needed as the update can come through wifi thats how i got my 1.6 update so it should be the same with froyo
Alright so if I connect the mytouch to wifi it will automatically find the update to install? No 3g connection to any network needed?

I think for most custom roms it won't work - to be sure roll back to last stock rom and hope to be one of the first
I haven't rooted my phone for awhile for numerous reasons, including the update. So basically OTA isn't over the network's data or anything? It's just a process that uses the internet, in whatever form it gets it?
I think some have missed the key point - you're on AT&T with a MyTouch (just like I am). You won't get the OTA automatically, as it is going to be sent by the carrier, not Google. AT&T doesn't "know" your MyTouch, and they don't support it...
The best solution if you're rooted, and the one I'm going to be doing, is simply to wait for a "clean rooted" version to come out and flash it. The OTA generally won't work on rooted phones since it is typically disabled.
If you're not rooted, then you'd have to find someone with T-Mobile and put their SIM card in and do a check for updates. Not sure if the data plan or wifi alone would be necessary in that case.
I heard that someone could simply manually install the update by looking for the link that the phone downloads it from. And you could do this without rooting, is that true?

If you think about it the new rom that installs on your phone comes with carrier apps (such as MyFaves, etc) and I really can't imagine AT&T sending you a T-Mobile rom. In my opinion (just a theory) I don't think that you would get the update. I could be wrong though.
Well in that case do you think it is likely that someone will be able to find the update file and I can load it onto my phone WITHOUT rooting?

I don't think so.
What's to stop you from rooting your device? It would solve all of your problems.

i'm gonna guess 2.2 will be the same. i dont know how long after the OTA updates until a manual update appears.

Actually cant someone who gets the OTA update look up a link in their phone (The location where the phone downloaded the update from) and post the link so people can download the file and manually update? If someone could do that when the update comes out I'd think that be a great help to myself and a few people out there who don't want to root but can't get their update.

Well there is a thread in the dev section on doing this. You should look there. If it requires root and you don't want to root, then I'd suggest either calling Sprint or bringing it in to a Sprint service store.
That thread doesn't require root just a computer and downloading a program on it.

I would suggest 11114, its in the thread in the Dev section here.
Epic 4g Manual PRL update
Can you tell me the name of the app if one exists that does not require root?
Also, what are you referring to with 11114? I did a search in dev forum and nothing comes up with 1114.
Thank you

Ok i went ahead and rooted it thanks to the new oneclick mod for clockwork and superuser apps. made it easy.
so the 11114 is a prl, app to install the prl? not sure what it is or used for.
and now that i'm rooted, would it be possible to download the prl 60676 (sprint) as a zip file then install it that way via the recovery / hboot menu?
Thank you for your help!
whosdaman ok your attachment is a prl got it! so this would work on sprint and since im now rooted can i used hboot to install via zip or do i still need to use a windows program to do this?
Ill have a link for you in a sec
Edit: it looks difficult at first but just follow it word for word except use the zip wdm posted

ok thank you i will roll up the sleeves and try the link with the steps.
Also, will the PRL update from 60675 to 11114 help with data speeds? i'm on 60675 and the data is just above edge when i did my speed tests.
also..is that 11114 good for sprint? i had a vzw prl at one put on accidently and got quite a large roaming bill. i don't want that to happen again

(Request) Missing MSL Need Sprint Radio/Baseband

I was on the stock rooted rom for the LS997 not the US996 variant I flashed the Lineage rom for it and since then my baseband was different and my device has forgotten its MSL code. So if someone could please upload the stock radio/baseband zip you'd be a life saver. Without this I get data connectivity but no call or sms abilities. Thank you in advance.
PS. if there is an easier way to fix this do leave it in the comments section. Thanks.
You will need to flash a stock rom.(the sprint NSS rom will work) and update your profile/prl.

I'm currently on the NSS rom. Sorry I signed into google and it put me on a different account. I've tried updating PRL and Profile many times I've just been unable to connect to sprint due to lack of an MSL, a tech said that's the stock baseband in a zip will fix it. I have a different baseband than all the other LS997's.

Alright update #2 I've got data working still but the device has forgotten it's msl and sprint gave me the number. It doesn't work in the dialer code and even worse I can't check for PRL and Profile updates or even software updates because the device only works on sprints lte network as if it were a gsm device. I have a different baseband than any other sprint V20 and would really appreciate some help.
