Backup program - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Themes and Apps

I remember seeing a thread about this, but the search function doesn't seem to come up with it. My old Tilt came with a backup program, I have yet to find one on my Tilt-2... Is there one? Is there a recommendation?
Thanks

What do you want to back up?
I find a combination of PIM Backup, Microsoft MyPhone, and my exchange server to be sufficient for my needs.

I'd like to back up everything.... since there are so many programs and utilities installed (generic programs and fixes from XDA-Developers).
I bought Sprite Backup for two phones ago and the previous one came with Sprite... which is very good software. I should probably see if I can transfer my old license, if there aren't other ideas.

You definetly have to try SPB backup, you have a free 5 uses test if you download trial, and it let's you choose what you want to backup (only PIM, all settings, registry as well)

Anyone have a comparison of the CURRENT version of Sprite vs SPB Backup? I used Sprite for years... although I now have 3 SPB utilities installed, so I know that they do good work.

MyPhone is a pretty good backup program. Free from Microsoft. It's nice, because most 6.5 ROMs you find on here would have it built in.
It's definitely saved my butt a couple times when I had to hard reset.

Does MyPhone back up all programs and registry settings?
It doesn't mention it on the website.

Does SPB Backup's scheduled backups keep on saving new files, or is there a way of limiting how many backup files are saved so that it doesn't fill up the SD card? Sprite Backup can do that.

SPB's scheduled backup also has an option to set the maximum number of backups to keep.

No, sadly it does not. It's more than just PIM. But less than full backup.
I'm sure there is a way you could do it... I just don't know how.
Whenever I install a new program, I just make a txt file on my desktop with what I have installed so far, and then put the cab in a folder with it.
It's my emergency hard reset and or rom flash kit...

SPBBackup for WM5

final release version of SPB backup for WM5 is now available to download at SPBsoftwarehouse.com
Free trail gives full functionality of software for 5 runs.
Tried it on my Mini S and it worked a treat.
Full backup to my storage card then restore from a singe executable or back up individual items (data/databases/settings etc..)
$20 for the full version which is pretty good value IMO
Interesting... I wonder how it stacks up against Sunnysoft's and Sprite's.
Is there any comparison review out there?
Also.. does this do a full backup, or just a backup of everything it can normally access? (e.g. registry, POOM, basic settings, data files - but not any of the files you can't normally copy)
From all the reviews I have read, the new WM5 versions of Sprite and spb backup are fine apps.
The difference for me is the sprite allows you to selectively restore files right on the device. Spb does not allow that, basically all or nothing. This is important when and if certain files get corruputed or changed. To do this using spb, you have to extract the files on a pc then copy them to the ppc.
Other than that, both programs will backup and restore your wm5 device.
Here's a comprehensive review of backup solutions for WM5.

Nice overview - though I think it's somewhat funny that they say "and there're only two reliable backup solutions: Sprite Backup 5 and Spb Backup 1.0" - so does that mean that Sunnysoft's (http://www.sunnysoft.cz/en_clanek.php?clanekid=51) is -un-reliable?
Actually, after some reading, the author does seem to think so - based on his experiences with it on a wizard (a Dell Axim x50 guy reported quite the opposite)... so, SPB Backup it is...
Actually, with SpB, you can select which files to backup or restore. You can also view them on your pc. It works as advertised, which is very well.
There's a good review over on Pocket PC Dubai.
Anybody that has purchased ANY OTHER SPB Software House package (SPB Pocket Plus, SPB Weather etc) can get a discount code which brings the price down to $15.96 which is around 1/2 the price of Sprite
See the rewards / discount section of the website http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/support/productdiscount.php?en

But you can't restore 1 or more specific files away from your PC. The only way to restore when you are away from your PC is an all-or-nothing scenario.
I can recall many times in which I did not want to restore my whole PPC and only wanted one or more specific files.

Yup, it can't backup/restore WinCE databases (for example, PIM stuff, SMS messages etc) reliably. Other than that (backing up the file system/registry), it's OK. But why go for a partially working solution when Spb/Sprite Backup do what they are intended to?

Was it a WM5 x50 or just a WM2003SE one? No backup program has problems with the latter. WM5, on the other hand, is an entirely different animal and just can't be backed up/restored with pre-WM5 algorithms.

Not with restore - only with backup.
also with restore
you can chose what files to restore by chosing option for my documents and system data when you restore your data
Ya' know, to me, the most important reason for backing up is data, settings, and configuration retrieval in the event of a catastrophic event.
The first thing I did with SpB is a backup my wizard, a hard reset, then a full restore.
My wizard was returned to exactly the same state as it was before the hard reset. No other backup app I tried did that. So I bought it.
Of course, I lean towards SpB products because they have always responded to my emails, offered advice, and listened and asked questions when I have a suggestion. So, if there are 2 or more products that work equally well, I'm gonna choose SpB every time. Their customer service is world class.

backup software

I used to have a blue angel with WM2k3. it used to have an app called xbackup which used to back up every change on your device post-vendor image to your SD card which could be restored in the event of a hard reset.
As the hermes doesn't have a backup battery (which is driving me nuts topping up the battery at any opportunity) is there an equivalent to the xbackup app that used to be provided with WM2k3 that can be used with WM5/hermes???
hope so. i'm getting trying to get ready for the inevitable day when i run out of juice and lose all my data!!
As far as I know, hermes uses WM5 which runs entirely from non-volitile flash memory which means that you can pull the battery and you won't loose your data.
With that said, there are apps out there, SPB Backup is one, that will allow you to make a full backup onto the SD Card.

SpB Backup
Make sure you use SpB backup - Sprite Backup crashed my device more than once (and I was using that product for over 4 years & 5 versions...)
And yes, the data on the device will stay even after a full battery drain ...

was thinking of buying sprite backup... so it crashes your OS?
I bought SPB and it works perfect. and I can verify that after my battery drained over night I simply pluged my TYTN and charged the battery. All data and programs were there.
Sprite Backup
I have no problem with Sprite Backup, I use it on my Qtek S100, Qtek 8550 and on my HTC TyTN. I run a scheduled backup every night, leaving three days of backups on my SD card.
I do not use the PC-agent - which would allow to backup the device to a PC folder while Activesync is active.

Backup issues...
Well, as we all know the Outlook data in a WM5 device is written to the file "pim.vol". Since this file will be in use all time it does make it difficult to backup this file.
So every backup application has to do some trick about it. Sprite Backup 5 does it quite simple: It just copies your file from "pim.vol" to "pim.volc" (it basically does this with every .vol file). The big issue about it: It will copy your file IN RAM.
So in my case it was easy math: My 16MB pim.vol file (6500 appointments, 800 contacts) was copied to RAM. Well, especially when I did not have a lot of RAM free (e.g. running some more applications) this would cause severe crashes. And it even left orphaned ".volc" files on my device. In RAM. More than 17MB!
---> Conclusion: If you experienced crashes with Sprite Backup: Make sure you delete all ".volc" files on your root folder (RAM). If you ever used Sprite Backup: Check!
Sprite is aware of this issue and was trying to fix it with a new beta. But I did not want to end up beta-testing their reliability. This is supposed to be rock-solid since it is a backup utility!
Read more at: http://www.spritesoftware.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1939&sid=d724e792e138ea4400a1fc114fd20bd2
---> 2nd conclusion: Use SpB Backup. I do not know about their backup procedure. But it works. And I am certainly not affiliated with SpB If a SpB employee reading this: I would really like an explanation on this one.

(Crazy App Idea?) Creating "ghost" images of the Phone file system

Was wondering if there were any developments towards creating an application like Norton Ghost or Acronis TrueImage for the PPC. Idea is to be able to ghost entire phone file/registry/firmware system when it's working fine, so that in case something goes wrong (or at testing things like Manila 3D beta) you can always reflash back.
I can see lots of problems with creating something that does that for PPC, and yet I'd be a very useful thing to have.
What do you guys think?
I`ve been looking for this kinda program too :,o
SPB Backup and Sprite Backup aren't enough for you?
SPB Backup works fine, but its still rom-dependant...
If you dont have the old rom you had, some things might not work exaclty, but then again, he has more options in that case.
Still, a full backup with rom included would be great...

Definitelly not. Ghost-like image supposedly would include all files, whole registry, ROM, drivers, all settings on a deeper, firmware level like HardSPL.
This is an awesome idea backup sometimes need to do hard reset first..if not after done restore..sometimes the files will be doubled

What about SPB clone?
Says " ยท Files, databases, applications and registry stored in one clone image "

Its a trial only...
SKTools
Best app to use for such a purpose is SKTools creates an exact image of your device and is pretty awesome about doing it

How does he work, is it really full with rom included?

Reasons to upgrade to WM6.1?

Hi,
I have just seen the posts about the availability of WM6.1. Can someone please post why this is worth doing? As I understand it I will lose all my customization (Media Player theme, SU2U, etc.) which is tiresome but acceptable if the benefits are good.
-Newer build, so most likely enhanced stability
-threaded sms
-better ie w/ faster loading and full page zoom
-autopair bluetooth
-Domain Enroll
i love autopair bluetooth!
Well, I now upgraded... I think the phone is a little faster. Otherwise I haven't noticed any huge differences.
But the upgrade was easy, I backed up my phone with spbBackup and then upgraded the ROM. Then I did a "ROM upgrade restore" from spbBackup to get most of my programs (Gmail and Opera don't work - will have to reinstall java and them I think) and all of my contacts and settings and phone lists back.
Is it really possible to Backup & Restore from an older build ?
I think, Sprite Backup and SPB Backup ALSO creates some Backup of the windows folder, which would lead you to get your "old" rom again ?!
Nope. It might *try* to (I haven't looked at how either of those programs actually perform their backups), but the ROM files are always locked, being part of the ROM itself and all.
Like when you go into \Windows you can't delete most of the files there - So the backup wouldn't be able to over-write them either.
Wondering if this has happened to anyone else, I upgraded about a week ago and since then I haven't been able to download the weather, it always says....unable to retrieve data after it attempts to connect. Anyone know similar cases?

SBP Backup - Hermes to Diamond

Hey all,
Emailing to ask the community's advice and wisdom here.
Background:
I'm ordering an HTC diamond (new contract time). Problem is I install a LOT of programs (about 30/40 medical textbooks, dozens of apps, games, tomtom, loads of custom maps/POIs, multimedia programs, internet browsers, flashcard programs, etc) and setting up a new device takes me litterally months on the time I have available.
Question:
So, I'm wondering if there's a solution I can use which will allow me to copy the files over to my HTC diamond and the appropriate reg entries so that the programs don't all need re-installed.
Then I thought about SBP backup. I've heard it can be used to restore all programs after upgrading to custom ROMs including different WM versions....so can I create a full backup file (they're self launching) copy it to my HTC diamond and run it?
Will I brick my diamond? Is there any way to do this? Or have I got to go through the long long procedure of setting everything up again? (I know I can backup and restore PIM thankfully!)
Thanks again all!
MrVarioII
SPB backup, to restore the apps, also restores the registry. I don't know for sure but I wouldn't chance bricking my BRAND NEW toy on something that I'm not sure of. All the memory and ram is a different size on the Diamond and could be set up differently to the way the Hermes is.
Essentially you have to ask yourself, do you feel lucky...... Well, Do ya?
you won't brick
running the wrong backup will not brick your device under any circumstances. It might not run properly and you will have to do a hard reset, but it will not brick your device.
I have used sprite backup to restore a backed up device on a difference rom and device before.
The first thing I would suggest is to restore the device without restoring the registry.
the only things you should need to reenter are passwords etc for the programs
The programs will need the reg entries surely?
And going back through that number of programs to re-enter the keys is a daunting task.
Other thing I'm thinking is that perhaps there are some custom drivers in the diamond I wouldn't want to overwrite?
Perhaps doing this would sacrafice eGPS or something?
The other potential source of problems is that many programs are installed on my hermes micro SD card.....Is a restore of that data to the diamond even possible? Does the diamond even have an SD slot? (seem to remember it's got 4GB internal memory and no SD slot)...Could be wrong...
All ideas/suggestions welcome
Its better that.....
You need to found new VGA version for app, cause many apps dont supports VGA and the hermes is QVGA, maybe it shows too little or not shown troubles... BTW I recomend you to use the WM5torage and make a backup of your PERSONAL data only, of course on your desktop PC or laptop, apps have VGA and QVGA on most devices and this is the most important incompatibilittie (hahahah i dont know how to said that!!!! sorry)
About wiki and specs about the diamond.... search on wiki men! ask there.... first of all.... search!!! and learn!!! Oh and your thread name is wrong you type SBP Backup jajajaja is SPB!! LOL
The Diamond doesn't have an sd card slot so its a moot point....
